HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 68-50-52, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT HOUSTON DYNAMO MONDAY, OCT. 30, 2017 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (W 2-1) MATCH RECAP
BOX SCORE
The Portland Timbers defeated Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-1 before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Oct. 22, securing the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and the 2017 Cascadia Cup, marking the club’s second Cascadia Cup trophy in its MLS era. Finishing the regular-season campaign atop the Western Conference for the second time in the last five seasons, the Timbers (15-11-8, 53pts) automatically advance to the Western Conference Semifinal of the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs, bypassing the Knockout Round played between the No. 3-6 seeds in each conference. Additionally, with the result, Portland matched its record for wins (15) in a single MLS season, previously setting the mark during the club’s 2015 championship season. Following an early goal from Vancouver (15-12-7, 52pts) after defender Kendall Waston scored a header from forward Yordy Reyna’s curling set piece in the box in the 29th minute of play, Portland responded strongly to get back into the game, with Ridgewell equalizing just three minutes later. The Timbers’ opening goal took place when Ridgewell pounced onto the rebound inside the six-yard box, tapping the ball in from close range, bringing the home side level. Portland took the lead two minutes after the break, following a well-orchestrated team play in the final third. Following a quick combination play between Nagbe and midfielder Sebastián Blanco, Blanco played a perfectly weighted ball in behind the defense for Vytas, who quickly cut the ball back across the six-yard box, allowing Mattocks to finish from close range in the 47th minute of play. The finish marked Mattocks’ second game-winning goal against Whitecaps FC this season. Blanco recorded his eighth assist of the season on the play, which ranks as the second-most on the team, while Vytas notched his fourth assist of the campaign.

Portland finished the 2017 regular season with 15 wins (tied for the most in club’s MLS history) and 60 goals scored (second-most across all eras). For the second consecutive season, Portland finished the season with six consecutive home victories. Portland won the Cascadia Cup for the second time as an MLS club. The win marked the fourth time the Timbers have won the Cascadia Cup since the competition formally started in 2004. Portland won all three of its matches against Vancouver, sweeping the season series against Whitecaps FC for the first time since 2011. This season is just the second time in all eras of the club that the Timbers have swept a season series of three or more games against Vancouver (1975). The Timbers scored for a 21st consecutive game, the longest active streak in MLS. It is the first time in club history the team has scored in 21 or more consecutive matches, surpassing the previous record of 20 straight matches, set in 1975. Portland secured the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for the second time in MLS play. It is the fifth time Portland has finished the regular season at the top of the conference or league in all eras of the club (1975, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2017). Darren Mattocks scored his fourth goal of the season. Mattocks finished the regular season with two game-winning goals, both of which came against Vancouver. Liam Ridgewell scored his third goal of the season. Vytas recorded his fourth assist of the season. Vytas becomes the second Timbers defender with four or more assists in a single MLS season, joining Jorge Villafana, who had five in 2015. Sebastián Blanco recorded his eighth assist of the season. Blanco is the second Timbers player to have eight or more goals and eight or more assists in the same MLS season (Diego Valeri - 2013, 2014, 2017). In Ridgewell’s last 18 home starts, the club is 16-0-2 with 44 goals for and 14 goals against.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On finishing atop the West and having the first-round bye… “Thirty-four games is a long season. For us to be – after 34 games, nine-and-a-half months – top of the West, says everything about the group I have in the locker room. The quality they have. We did it with different guys as well, but we earned it and we deserved it. We started out of the gates strong. We were top of the league for the first two months then we went through a lull because we had a bunch of injuries and that’s when we needed to go to the bench and those guys stepped up. They got the job done. Got enough points. And then at the end when we got healthier – we still aren’t 100 percent – our form and playing the football that we want to play came back and you see it. At home in the last six games, we are 6-0 and in every one of those games we’ve played with an attacking-oriented style and had the ball and pressed and created very good goals, and that’s the way we want to play. And when we do that we are a tough team to beat. I’m real proud of the guys to earn the No. 1 seed; doesn’t ensure anything, but that’s a real good accomplishment. That’s the first season. That’s done. Now the second season is up and we’ve got five games to win a cup and we are going to take them one at a time and you will see just as hungry a group, trust me.” Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell On what his game-tying goal did for the team’s confidence… “I think that was big, scoring an equalizer before we went in at halftime. We felt we played OK in the first half and deserved a goal. It’s disappointing to concede how we did, but it’s good to get the goal and go in at the break 1-1.”

MVP STATUS With 21 goals and 11 assists in 32 games played, Diego Valeri has made a strong case for MLS MVP in 2017 by reaching several key milestones this season. Scoring in Portland’s 3-0 win against Orlando City SC on Sept. 24, Valeri set the MLS record for consecutive games with a goal (9). Additionally, by scoring his 50th goal on Aug. 12, Valeri became the third-fastest player (139 games) in league history to reach the 50-50 mark.
