pon arriving to Portland one month ago, Vytas has quickly fallen in love with the picturesque scenes Portland has to offer, along with the spirit of the city.
“The most surprising thing is that the city is so natural, with the mountains, forest and the sea. The people are very healthy. They’re always doing sports and you can always see people hiking, going on the bicycles. Also, there are so many restaurants to choose from and numerous small, local-owned businesses to choose from. It’s not just fancy restaurants where everyone goes. So, I think that the whole spirit of Portland is very fresh and open-minded and that’s what surprised the most.”
Vytas
With Portland offering numerous restaurant options, Vytas has forced himself to visit a different place when he goes out to eat, rather than sticking to just one restaurant. “I like everything, I’m not a picky person. So, everywhere I go I really enjoy the food. I enjoy the place, and every time I try something new I really like it. But, so far, I have a rule where I always have to go to a different place, just to try everything, so I don’t have a particular place that’s my favorite.” When it comes to similarities between Portland and the previous cities he’s played in, Vytas admits that the close proximity to water, along with the supportive and friendly fans, remind him of home the most. “The water. Everywhere that I lived in Europe was surrounded by water in some capacity. Also, the fans here are incredible and very friendly, similar to Holland and Sweden.” While in the Pacific Northwest, Vytas hopes to hit the hiking trails during the offseason and is also planning a trip south to visit California for the first time. “There are a bunch of things that I’d like to do. There are mountains that I’d like to hike to see. I would also love to go down to California to check it out. There are so many things to do here. Some of them need to wait until the offseason, though, because I can’t go hiking for two miles right now to make sure that I’m fresh for the games.”

“It’s unbelievable. When I watched the game against LA Galaxy, they were down 2-0 within the first 15 minutes and the fans never stopped singing and being so positive toward the team. To be involved in that Seattle game at home, that was something I’ve never experienced – the whole occasion, the national anthem – I love all of this here in America. But, it’s the Timbers Army, really, just the way they are. They were nonstop for 94 minutes against Seattle. They were absolutely outstanding, and they were like our 12th man.”

“I was living the dream. As a young boy, I came in the club at nine years old and all you ever want to do is play for your hometown team. I was there as a fan with my dad, and to be given that opportunity was amazing. I lived every Newcastle kid’s dream. Now, I’m here in Portland and I’m living every Portland kid’s dream, and I still get the same excitement.”
Scoring on His Home Debut
New Chapter
It’s certainly special for me. Scoring in a derby game is something I never did with Newcastle, and I’ve done it straight away with Portland. So, for me, it will be never forgotten and definitely ranks right up there.
“I think the atmosphere the fans here in Portland bring to the game stood out very strongly. Portland is a city that understands soccer, and a lot of people focus on soccer here. Also, I wanted to be a part of something special. When you look at what they did last year, I want to try and get involved and win something here in Portland, so that’s my target for being here, and being around a group that has a winning mentality. We have a great group of players and a great group of staff who are looking to help me improve all the time.”
Goals with Portland “I hope to try and improve this side and make it better. I think, obviously, if we keep winning games, that’s all I want to do here. I just want to win and I want to be around a winning mentality. I give a 100 percent effort and I make sure everybody else does on the pitch. It’s the same with the lads. They’re on the same wavelength as me. They want to go the same way I want to go. An MLS Cup title is the goal. I just want to win everything. I just want to win as much as I can.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS U-23s
The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid is T2. Playing their matches in the 29-team USL, T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Playing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster is comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club and players that possess many different qualities and come from varied backgrounds. In 2015, MLS-signed players Taylor Peay, Nick Besler, Andy Thoma, Michael Seaton, Jake Gleeson and Anthony Manning appeared in 82 matches for T2, gaining valuable experience in the team’s inaugural USL season. In January, Andrew Gregor was named head coach for the 2016 USL season. Gregor will lead T2 after serving as an assistant coach during the 2015 season, while also helping guide the Timbers U-16 and U-18 Academy sides for parts of the past two seasons.
The Portland Timbers U-23s compete in the USL PDL – the top U-23 league in North America. Founded Nov. 11, 2008, the Timbers U-23s is an amateur team that has produced several first-team players, including goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and T2 players Kharlton Belmar and Brent Richards. The team won the PDL national championship in 2010 and competed in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
