What are some of your favorite things to do so far in Portland? “My fiancée and I are huge on restaurants, so we love going to new restaurants. Portland is such a great city for food, so we really enjoy that aspect of it. But, I’d love to get into hiking more. I recently purchased some hiking shoes, so once we get into summer that will be part of the regeneration process for me.”
Zarek Valentin
Portland is definitely a dog friendly city. Where are some your favorite places to walk your dog? “I walk my dogs down on 23rd. My dogs don’t have the greatest stamina, so I can’t go on extensive hikes with them. I usually walk down Burnside, make a left down 23rd and head down to a few of the coffee shops in that area. Once a week, I’ll reward myself with Blue Star and hang out there with my dogs.” Compared to past cities that you’ve lived and played in, what stands out about Portland? “I’ve lived in a few different places with very different cultures. For me, Portland has the best combination of everything that I look for in a city. It’s not an overwhelmingly big city, the culture is great, along with the shopping, food and outdoors scene. I also love the climate. I think it’s perfect. For me, it just has a little bit of everything.”
Good Eats New to Portland and always up for trying new things, Valentin details some of his favorite places to eat in Portland.
Piazza Italia (1129 NW Johnson St.). Unbelievable Italian food. But, Mediterranean Exploration Company (333 NW 13th Ave.) was extraordinary. It’s somewhat of a Tapas style restaurant, and it’s incredible.

A
fter scoring his third goal of the season against FC Dallas on May 11, Diego Valeri recorded his 26th goal with Portland, moving him into sole possession of eighth place on the Timbers all-time list for goals scored across all eras (since 1975). The finish marked the second goal in three games for Valeri, who also recorded a goal and an assist against Toronto FC on May 1.
P

Quick Hits “Occasionally, we’ll have a few different beers. Coming to Portland, I had no idea how huge the beer scene is here. But, I was approached to create a beer of my own, something that was a beer that I would drink. So, we got together with them and did the whole brewing process, which was a lot of fun. They asked me what I liked to drink in a beer, which was kind of a lighter IPA, and we also mixed in some bourbon barrel back into it, which was fun and helped create a different flavor with the beer.”

“I grew up playing basketball and still enjoy it in the offseason in my downtime. When we’re not in season, I can’t sit still for too long so I’ll go to the basketball court and shoot around. Recently, my nephew and I were at a local gym, and we were messing around a little bit, doing some trick shots and trying to make half court shots at the same time.”

There are definitely some differences when you’re around 25 grown men, compared to a seven-year-old and a fouryear-old. So, there’s definitely some differences. But, I think you still go about your business the same way as you would at home. You try to be a good guy, a good person and a good father, whether that’s on the field or at home.

“It’s probably when we lost in 2013 to Real Salt Lake in the playoffs. Obviously, we were all down as players, but it was a very memorable moment because I think that’s the loudest I’ve ever heard that stadium. Hearing the entire crowd doing the ‘PTFC’ chant was just a moment where the community was still rallying behind us when were in a moment where we were down. Obviously the home opener against Chicago is one that I will always remember as well.”

R ooted in the club’s deep history, the Timbers have a passion for developing youth players and the sport of soccer in the region. Through partnerships established with Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA), and Oregon’s Olympic Development Program (ODP), the Timbers have built a comprehensive vertical development structure, which allows players within the club’s development territory a direct path from the youth level to the top tier of professional soccer in North America – Major League Soccer. PORTLAND TIMBERS U-23s
The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid is T2. Playing their matches in the 29-team USL, T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Playing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster is comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club and players that possess many different qualities and come from varied backgrounds. In 2015, MLS-signed players Taylor Peay, Nick Besler, Andy Thoma, Michael Seaton, Jake Gleeson and Anthony Manning appeared in 82 matches for T2, gaining valuable experience in the team’s inaugural USL season. In January, Andrew Gregor was named head coach for the 2016 USL season. Gregor will lead T2 after serving as an assistant coach during the 2015 season, while also helping guide the Timbers U-16 and U-18 Academy sides for parts of the past two seasons.
The Portland Timbers U-23s compete in the USL PDL – the top U-23 league in North America. Founded Nov. 11, 2008, the Timbers U-23s is an amateur team that has produced several first-team players, including goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and T2 players Kharlton Belmar and Brent Richards. The team won the PDL national championship in 2010 and competed in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

One of the first of its kind, the partnership between the Timbers and OYSA has established top-tier development opportunities for thousands of Oregon’s youth soccer players through OYSA’s club leagues and tournaments. The Timbers and OYSA provide its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creating a unified development philosophy across the state. The MLS club also is the presenting partner of the Oregon State Cup.
