In his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City, forward Dom Dwyer recorded his first goal of the 2017 season in a 3-1 over the Colorado Rapids on April 9. GM/President of Soccer Gavin Wilkinson
G
avin Wilkinson, a 17-year veteran of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand international, serves as the club’s general manager and president of soccer. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10. In his current role, Wilkinson has formed the Timbers’ deeply integrated, vertical development system, which includes USL club Portland Timbers 2 (T2), the Portland Timbers U-23s and Timbers Academy teams (U-18, U-16 and U-14). He was instrumental in establishing an innovative partnership with Oregon Youth Soccer Association, which encompasses the statewide Olympic Development Program and regional training centers, as well as the adidas Timbers Alliance program. Wilkinson also serves as the general manager and president of soccer for Portland Thorns FC. During Wilkinson’s tenure as general manager and president of soccer, the club has won MLS Cup in 2015, an NWSL championship with Thorns FC in 2013, an NWSL Shield in 2016 and a national championship with the Timbers U-23s in 2010. Additionally, the Timbers have made two appearances in CONCACAF Champions League (2014-15, 2016-17) and have twice advanced to the Western Conference Championship (2013, 2015).
During Wilkinson’s tenure as the club’s general manager and president of soccer, the club has won MLS Cup in 2015, an NWSL championship with Thorns FC in 2013, an NWSL Shield in 2016 and a national championship with the Timbers U-23s in 2010.

As the club’s general manager and head coach from 2007-10, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/ USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He guided the club to three postseason berths, including its only semifinals appearances as a second-division club in 2007 and 2009. As head coach, Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) titles in 2009, 2010 and again in 2012. He led the Timbers to one of the best seasons in USL First Division history in 2009, including a record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commissioner’s Cup. Wilkinson’s 13-year professional playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, including Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season in 2001, playing in each of the club’s first six seasons and serving the dual role as a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his playing career ranked among the Timbers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181). A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups. Wilkinson founded the youth club Eastside Timbers, based in Gresham, Ore., in 2001. He helped run the club as its coaching director for many years and now serves as an advisor for the club. In 2010, Eastside’s U-18 boys team (’91 Liverpool) won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship and became the first youth club team from Oregon to win a national title since 1994. He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan (13) and Brooke (10).

H ead coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth
season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 53-39-44, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11

clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

Sean McAuley Assistant Coach
Part of the coaching staff that won the 2015 MLS Cup title, Sean McAuley enters his sixth season as an assistant coach with the club. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC, where he served as a head coach in the club’s academy. During his professional playing career, McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers during the 2002 season. McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s Academy head coach, where he oversaw the development of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team. A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley, who holds a UEFA Pro license, played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town. McAuley played for the Timbers in 2002, appearing in 16 matches and logging two assists while helping the club make the postseason.
Cameron Knowles Assistant Coach
Cameron Knowles returns for a sixth season as an assistant coach for the Timbers, working on the coaching staff that won the 2015 MLS Cup title. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career. Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles, who holds a USSF A license, played two seasons in MLS before joining the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the club. From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009

Adin Brown
Goalkeeper Coach Adin Brown enters his third season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2017, having previously played for the team in both the second-division and MLS eras and serving as a coach at the collegiate level at the University of Portland in 2014. In his first season with the club, Brown was part of the coaching staff that won the 2015 MLS Cup. Brown originally joined the second-division Timbers in 2010 and ascended with the club upon its move to MLS in 2011. With a professional career spanning more 13 years, Brown, who holds a USSF B license, began his career with the Colorado Rapids in 2000, and went on to appear in 85 games in his MLS career, also spending time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, helping guide the Revolution to the MLS Cup final in 2002.
Pablo Moreira
Assistant Coach / Video Analyst Serving on the 2015 Timbers coaching staff that won MLS Cup, Pablo Moreira marks his fifth season with the club in 2017. Prior to joining the staff in Portland, Moreira served as an assistant coach under Caleb Porter at the University of Akron from 2010-12 after a four-year playing career for the Zips (200307). As a collegiate standout for Akron, Moreira was a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection and helped lead the Zips to three regular-season and conference tournament championships as well as four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Andrew Gregor enters his second season as head coach of Portland’s USL side, Timbers 2 (T2). Gregor previously served as an assistant coach for T2 during their inaugural 2015 season and also guided the Portland Timbers Academy U-16 and U-18 sides in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy for two seasons. As head coach of the Timbers U-16 side, he helped lead the team to its first appearance in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs. Following the 2014-15 Academy season, Gregor was named the U-15/16 West Conference Coach of the Year. As part of a 12-year professional playing career that included time in MLS, Gregor played for the Columbus Crew and Kansas City Wizards and also featured with USL First Division sides the Seattle Sounders and Rochester Rhinos. A standout at the University of Portland during his collegiate career, Gregor, who holds a USSF B license, appeared in 50 league games for the Timbers (2004, 2007-08), registering 10 goals and eight assists. He helped Portland capture a regular-season title in 2004 and earned all-league honors in 2007. timbers.com

After that, I’ll lay my towel out and my kit for the game, starting with the socks that I’m going to wear for the game, then my shin pad inserts, tape and then the captain’s armband. I guess you could say it’s sort of my superstition. I’ve always done that since I was a kid. Once that’s done, I’ll go and get in the Jacuzzi to meet (Jack) Barmby and Benny (Ben Zemanski). Jack Jewsbury used to be in there as well, but we’re slowly losing numbers. Once that’s done, I’ll go and get on the treatment table.

R
ooted in the club’s deep history, the Timbers have a passion for developing youth players and the sport of soccer in the region. Through partnerships established with Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA), and Oregon’s Olympic Development Program (ODP), the Timbers have built a comprehensive vertical development structure, which allows players within the club’s development territory a direct path from the youth level to the top tier of professional soccer in North America – Major League Soccer.

The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid is T2. Playing in their third season in the 30-team USL, T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a professional team that creates a bridge between the Timbers Academy and the Timbers first team.
The adidas Timbers Alliance is a strategic partnership between the club and elite local youth clubs throughout the Timbers’ development territory, designed to build unique working relationships and development opportunities to help channel the top youth players toward Timbers development programs and academy. Started in 2012, the alliance includes the following clubs: Idaho (Boise Nationals Timbers, Sting Timbers FC), the Portland metro area (Westside Timbers, Eastside Timbers), Central Oregon (Bend FC Timbers), Southern Oregon (Rogue Valley Timbers), the Willamette Valley (Capital FC Timbers, Eugene FC Timbers) and Southwest Washington (Washington Timbers).
PORTLAND TIMBERS U23 In 2017, the Portland Timbers ventured into a partnership with Capital FC Timbers in Salem, Ore., where the Salem-based club will handle the day-to-day operations of the Portland Timbers U23 PDL franchise, while the MLS club will provide resources and assist with player recruitment and selection. The team won the PDL national championship in 2010.
PORTLAND TIMBERS ACADEMY The Timbers Academy consists of teams in the U-18, U-16 and U-14 age brackets of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from the Timbers development territory advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

ODP/REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERS In partnership with OYSA, the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC oversee the state’s Olympic Development Program (ODP). As part of this partnership, the Timbers have expanded the state’s regional training center program to seven locations, and train locally at these sites 18-20 times a year. In the spring of each year, RTC programs are brought together to hold training and games. Over the RTC tournament weekend, Timbers coaching staff members select the best players in the Homegrown territory to form Timbers and Thorns FC ODP teams, otherwise known as pre-academy or academy reserve teams. The club’s 2000 Timbers Boys ODP team won its first regional ODP championship in January 2017, competing against all states in the western United States. In addition, Idaho Youth Soccer Association runs three RTC programs.
TIMBERS YOUTH LEAGUES, TOURNAMENTS & CAMP The Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ comprehensive youth development structure. The Timbers and OYSA provide its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creating a unified development philosophy across the state. The Timbers offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each camp is centered on age-appropriate exercises and activities designed to develop technical excellence and build a love for the game.

Jake Zivin
Television Play-by-Play Announcer Jake Zivin serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for the Timbers regional television broadcasts, hosts “Timbers in 30”, the club’s weekly television show on FOX 12 KPTV, and co-hosts the post-match show with Timbers television analyst Ross Smith. Part of the television broadcast team in 2015, Zivin was also the radio play-by-play announcer during the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. In addition, Zivin was the web stream play-by-play broadcaster for all T2 home matches during their inaugural USL season in 2015.

Television Analyst Former Timbers defender Ross Smith serves as the analyst on the Timbers regional television broadcasts as well as the co-host of “Timbers in 30.” The 2017 season marks Smith’s seventh on the broadcast side as he started off as a radio analyst in Portland’s inaugural MLS season in 2011, moving over to the television broadcast in 2012. In addition, Smith co-hosts the postgame show with Zivin and “Talk Timbers,” a weekly radio show.

Radio Play-by-Play Announcer The 2017 season marks Keith Bleyer’s sixth season as part of the Timbers broadcast team, having worked with both the radio and television broadcast teams during his tenure. A television and radio broadcaster with nearly four decades of experience, Bleyer has been involved in Major League Soccer broadcasting since the late 1990s.

Samantha Yarock is in her third season with the Timbers broadcast team as reporter and as a contributor on “Timbers in 30.” In addition, Yarock contributes to the club’s post-game show on ROOT SPORTS and FOX 12 and online at Timbers.com. Prior to joining the staff, Yarock was a content producer and on-air talent for MLSSoccer.com.
Brett Jacobs Radio Analyst
Brett Jacobs begins his fourth season as part of the Timbers radio broadcast team in 2017. Prior to his arrival in Oregon, Jacobs spent five years working as an assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids in MLS and was interim head coach of the Timbers U-23s in 2016. He currently serves as the head men’s soccer coach at Clark College and the technical director of the Washington Timbers in Vancouver.
Nat Borchers On-Field Analyst
The Timbers broadcast team welcomes a new face this season with the addition of former Timbers defender Nat Borchers. Recently retired after a standout, 14-year career in MLS, Borchers will provide on-field analysis during Timbers home games on ROOT SPORTS and FOX 12 in 2017.
Fletcher Johnson Radio Talent
Fletcher Johnson returns for his seventh season as part of the Timbers broadcast team in 2017. As host of the Timbers radio pregame, halftime and postgame shows, Johnson, who has extensive experience in local radio, first joined the club for their inaugural MLS season in 2011.
