Common processes for different realities

The relevance of communication in the process of architecture has to be understood as an important part of how we imagine spaces and the understanding of others in order to find accurate solutions. The analysis of the necessities, concerns and dreams is a powerful process to imagine how to design for others and not for ourselves. Sometimes we can find through translating a wider process for creation. We imagine a common process in order to address different realities using the house as the most basic and urgent element in architecture today. In order to relate our projects to the real elements in life we are trying to create consciousness about emergent societies and their real problems. The goal is to understand the approach through the people, the site and the economy of an urgent context, emphasizing the process as a main tool that results in an object/ house/shelter. Five case studies are going to be considered through five geographical places, five different household’s and five different cultural backgrounds.

Originally from Morocco, the Karam family moved to Portugal in order to improve their quality of life since there are more jobs in agriculture for Uncle Ghadi, access to higher education for Layla & Ali, and medical care for Grandma Selma. Reecting the nature of the Karam family that shares a lot of time together, we created the heart of the house with the common living spaces and shared services, while maintaining the need for privacy and intimacy by separating the bedrooms in the 2 wings of the house. Wanting to create a No Shame housing, where all the inhabitants could be be proud to live and bring people over, we also expanded the reach of the house through the front patio which will be used by Grandma Selma and the kids to play, study, and interact with the community, as well as the back garden for Uncle Ghadi to plant and maintain. It also takes into account the need of Uncle Ghadi to have his own family in the future and includes a space for internal expansion and creating an extra bedroom within the perimeter of the house, while maintaining the shared services for all.

The site is located in a small rural locality named San Dionisio del Mar in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico; where there are few utilities and it is poorly connected to other services. The climate is tropical-sub humid and with a strong presence of winds from north to south. The main economic activities are fishing, farming and agriculture, and the majority of the people are indigenous and speak their native languages. The project is intended to be built in a portion of land in the outskirts of the town. The living conditions in San Dionisio del Mar are very precarious. The houses are made with the chepeast materials and easiest techniques. Some of the people are iliterate, so they don’t know how to build their houses in order to improve, as far as possible, their quality of life. The eathquake that hit Mexico in 2017, affected the state of Oaxaca and San Dionisio del Mar was amognst the most affected areas. The community came together to help each other. People lost their houses and their lifes changed. Some of them are still waiting to rebiuld their homes.

The family is composed by Crimilda the grandmother (60yrs), Heriberto the son (31yrs), Roselia the son’s wife (29yrs) and their children Maria (7yrs) and Juan (2yrs). Heriberto is currently working in USA providing for the family while Crimilda and Roselia are in charge of the house. Crimilda likes to stay in, cleaning and cooking and Roselia spends most of the time outside. She takes the children to school, does the groceries and buys the necesary things to keep the house working. The children go to school in the morning and in the afternoon are either in the house with the grandmother or doing some activities in town. Our design is based on the family organization and needs. We thought of a common space were they could eat, have guests or do activities. It is located in the center of the plan, protected from the sun and opened to the courtyard, enlarging the space. Also, because they have different schedules, we wanted to give some privacy to Crimilda from Roselia and the kids, so the rooms were located on oposite sides of the central space. The house is organized as a rectangule, the long facades look north-south, where the wind comes, to generate cross ventilation and improve the thermal conditions.

Maria is a 63 years old retired agricultural worker that owns a plot of land in the western part of Ciudad Lerdo in Mexico. The area has recently been urbanised and was previously covered in crops fields. She stays with her daughter in law Guadalupe and her two kids, Diana and Alejandro. She is 31 and works as a cleaning lady in the eastern part of the city. With her husband working in the USA, she is the provider of the family. She previously had an agreement with her employers and could live attached to their house, but is now getting expelled, thus in urgent need of re-housing. Diana, the eldest kid, is currently in middle school and takes care of the basic education of her 6 years old brother who is not enrolled. While Guadalupe and Diana spend a big part of the day outside the house, Maria and Alejandro usually stay at home, leaving only at certain occasions such as to go to church, or grocery shopping.

A small town in Lerma, Mexico offered José Luis and his wife Lalia an unique environment to grow up. The farmer’s son grew into the family tradition and continued to grow corn on the nearby fertile fields. He inherited a small property at the foot of the mountains where the young couple and their newborn son Francisco are able to build a small house by themselves. Due to extraordinary achievements at school, Francisco gets a scholarship to study in town. Meanwhile his room gets rented to their families cousin, Dani. In return he helps José Luis cultivating the corn and nevertheless he is able to continue writing his novel. To ensure the privacy of the familylife they add extra space to the bathroom. The years passing by, Francisco returns with his wife Angela to help his aged father. Cousin Dani moves out to make room to the married couple, eventhough they need to expand their built environment. As the family grows, the house grows with them…

The ‘Sertão do Nordeste’ is a region in Brazil that integrates the most interior part of almost all the states of the north-eastern area of the country. It usually refers to interior zones, regardless of the economical or social level of development. Geographically it’s an area of transition between he regions of the ‘Agreste’ (which is dry) and the Half-North (which has more humidity). The soil is quite shallow, sandy and predominantly desert like and has a low capacity for retaining water. The weather is dominated by warm temperatures (25-30 degrees) and a longer dry season with low chance of rain, which holds back further development of agriculture and cattle. Even during the winter there is little rain, which causes the rivers to run dry often. Due to this lack of water for a good part of the year, it is frequent for the communities to have cisterns and water storing devices, that can collect water during the wet season (about 3 months of the year). During this season, the vegetation seems to grow back. During the dry season, military trucks refill the cisterns with water. The families live in neighbourhood communities and generally practice agriculture to help with their subsistence, in areas where the weather allows. They also take care of cattle and produce a variety of handcrafted items.

This house was developed for a specific, not conventional family considering their specificities and needs. Thus, the comprehension of the particularities inherent to this familiar structure were a key part of the initial process. Our family was composed of five persons, from two different generations: three sisters (all single), and the son and daughter of two of the sisters. The sisters are: Serafina who is 40 years old and works as housekeeper (she also sells handcrafted items in the town’s fair) , Josefa who is 35 years old and works as a teacher (she is the only one with a formal education) and Cristina, who is 26 years old, and works at the town’s grocery store. The younger ones are: Luciano, 17 years old, Serafina’s son; and Francisca, 5 years old, Cristina’s daughter.
