JOHAN CELSING
A PUBLIC INSTITUTION ON THE CORNER OF RUA CHÃ AND AVENIDA D. AFONSO HENRIQUES INTRODUCTION
The site location means that the new building is in a narrow street of domestic character as well as facing a major avenue and public monuments of the city such as the Sé Cathedral. The Library will face on to the the Rua Chã, the avenida and to the north-east on to a public passage with stairs connecting the Rua Chã with the Avenida. The physical constaints are the triangular footprint. The height restrictions are that the height of the new building shall not exceed the neighbouring building along Rua Chã. Reflect on how the exterior may reponds to its location and surroundings while the institution in the interior may envolve around certain atmospheres of space, materials, light and activities. The library has quiet as well as public areas. The interiors may relate to the very different exterior surroundings or may be developed around the interior landscape or it’s spacial sequences. Note the qualities of the contemporary Free Plan, Transparent Building and those of the Raumplan of Adolf Loos. Material treatment is a theme worth considering even though the time of the project is short. You may reflect on the qualities on prefabricated building parts as well as on how the tactile, haptic, qualities may inform buildings also in our time. Do consider the interesting topography of the site and the worth of developing your buildings in it’s sections. And how the
An international architectural workshop for students is mainly an oportunity to think about architecture together with people from other cultures. In this case, at FAUP, we wanted to take the chance to think about a problem of this city, Porto. We did not want to work on a generic and abstract exercise. Therefore we have chosen a specific site. We believe its comprehension will provide students with knowledge about the history and urban development of Porto. The site is located in the center. It clearly shows an open problem that has to do with the destruction of an important urban part of Porto (Sé) for the construction of D.Luís I Bridge (Gustave Eiffel Project; some says it’s the first model for the Eiffel Tower in Paris) and new infrastructures for the traffic. This Bridge was the first big infrastructure that connects Porto and South by car. It was built between 1881-1888. In the North of the site, we have the famous São Bento Train Station ( Marques da Silva project – famous Architect from Porto, 1916). The project is to design a local Public Library at the steep intersection of the rua Chã and the Avenida de D.Afonso Henriques – this Avenue makes the connection between the center of the city and the bridge to the South. Today the bridge has the Metro on the upper level and cars on the lower level.

ground floor spaces relate the the surrounding out-door spaces. We suggest you develop your project through the means of drawings of vaying scales and media. Plans , sections, elevations and perspective studies. There is usually a lot gained by continuesly going back and forth from the small scale with overview to the large scale where the abrstractions of the small scale get tested in more realistic measures. Reflect on how different medias, pencil, coloured crayons or ink or printed drawings may offer alternative openings in the solution of a project. As much as we all use the digital media today we promote the craft of drawing as a tool, as a serious alternative to the visual focus of the digital image. About the perspectives we encourage you all to develop this method. The idea is not to draw pretty illustrations but to get a sense of the spatial circumstances and develop a direction for your project. The students will be organized in groups of max. three. Relevant historical information of the city and of this specific area will be given to each one, i.e. old plans, photos, drawings. At the end the sketched proposals will be resumed in a booklet . Meanwhile we will walk around the city trying to discover its forms and atmospheres.

The Tower of Cha is a complex thought for the public which hosts two separate programs: a conference spaceaccessible through the Avenida De A. Henriques and a public library-accessible by means of the outdoor staircase or via the Rua Do Cha. The building revolves around the circulation of the public into the institution. Furthermore, the faรงade is a dialog between publicness (Church, bridge, train station) and domesticness (private houses across the street).

The three blocks that are composing the building are pointing on focal direction: the main one is orientated to the Torre Dos Clerigos, the central one has a view on the preexisting rock, and the third one offer a connection with the main street to attract the pedestrians.

LIBRARY IN PORTO Starting from a site visit, this project is inseparable of its location. Situated in the city of Porto in one of the most historical sights, the library that since the ancient times has been a sacred place to search for knowledge. Nowadays this institution offers more than just books, but also a place to escape from the outside world, where you can concentrate on what you need without been bothered or distracted. By this characteristics the library was designed to attend the local people that lives nearby that can escape from one of the most touristic places in Porto. Creating a reference between the granite and marble that decorates Porto, the design is an interpretation of this secular extraction. By the side of rock hill the site confronts both with a spectacular view and quiet areas. The resemblance with a carved stone the library counts with a conference area and a cafe integrated with both spaces and the city. The Main purpose of the library is to embrace the community without turning this particular library into a white elephant in the city.

TIAGO GONÇALVES The building is intended to establish a relationship to the Cathedral of Porto, Torre dos 24 and Torre dos ClÊrigos by its form, materiality and openings that frame views to these buildings and allow the light to get in. The interior makes space for meeting and staying and the stairs bring light into the interior. This space gives people the chance to have visual connection between several floors. A stereotomic architecture covered by granite stone with bush hammered finish on the base and a natural finish on the top creating an horizontal dominance as its emerging from the floor.

BRECHELER, PUSTERLA, SLOWICKA The intervention reflects the duality of the site in its volume and materiality. Taking advantage from the difference of quotes of the plot, the buildings sits on a elevate podium, where the main entrance and the more mondane functions are hosted. The urban gesture of the building encloses a quite courtyard open to the city, offering to the neighborhood of Rua ChĂ a new relation with the cathedral in front. A massive wall, where the books are stored, memory of the medieval city, surrounds and protects the courtyard, contrasting with the modest and light facade of the reading rooms, open to the public space.

LELIO DI LORETO The project work on two main theme. A urban path to overtake the differce high of floor. Preserve the panoramic view on the catthedral and the city. From the lower level start two different path. The first one pass into the building trought the library’s hall and permit to access at all building‘s function. The second one pass out of the building; trought a ramp is possible to arrive at a small and panoramic square. In higher part the building open some panoramic view and passage to arrive at the square. The panoramic view is preserve also in the space between the new and preexisting building. This in between space became a secret garden, a green private terrace overlooking the city.

The project consist of two different volumes: the staircase and the library. The volumes are developed in height and can be read as indipendent and at the same time appear to be connected through a glass corridor that offers a complete view of the city and at the same time provides light to the building. This composition strategy directly refers to the context, being related to the architecture of the nearby SĂŠ do Porto Cathedral with its tower.

My intervention reflects the intention to follow the character of the topography of the place by creating library on three levels, with two volumes , horizontal slab and vertical circular, in each level the function directed by the view to the city and the orientation. The library starts at the level 65 by small ramp , then it is linked in the level 68,5 to avendida Afonso Henriques and level 72 to rua de cha with different entrances.

The landscape of Porto is not a dichotomy of industrialization and nature. It’s an overlapping landscape of human activities and nature resources. The design aims to highlight this characteristic, where the rock wall and slope create a special landscape in the corner. In this sense, the building continues the shape of the rock wall vertically, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature, and use a separated volume and an exterior staircase to connect another side of the rock wall, which has around 6 meter height difference.

ABSTRACT Anchored in a rocky elevated landscape of the SÊ quarter in the city of Porto, our proposal for the public library provides a new urban interface in an already dynamic realm. Our vision is in respect of the rocky landscape feature as it incorporates a serpentine promenade that gives the building the character of a both transparent and permeable library. The functional aspect of the building takes primarly into account the complexity of the site. The given program has been carefully distributed according to the topography of the site and the views it has to offer on the city’s most important landmarks.

The public library will be situated on the corner of the main street Av. D. Alfonso Henriques and the small street Rua Cha in Porto. The intention was to be considerate of the surroundings and create one entrance on the small street with a cafe and a bookshop –the main entrance to the library from the main street. This entrance will also have a public space in front – that will be covered with a roof. In total it will only be four floors – but from each side of the building it may appear smaller than it is – but when inside there will be double heights, mezzanines and beautiful skylights to create and intimate and sanctuary atmosphere.

IGA MAJOREK The library is situated in the centre of city of Porto on a slope of a street corner facing the Cathedral and Rua Cha. It is a topography of a terrain that was crucial from a beginning of a designing process and gave its characteristics to the building. The intention was to open the building to panoramic views over a city, but also to merge the mass of the library into the ground. That is why there is a platform- plinth built into the slope, that has inside two levels with a cafe on a ground floor and conference halls on a second. It is somehow a continuation of a rocky hill, so there is a stone cladding on the walls. There is an entrance terrace, where people may gather and appreciate spectacular views and is connected with Avenida de Alfonso Henriques, but also with Rua Cha.On a top of the platform there is a highest level with a library that is surrounded by translucent glass walls. The building is immersed in a hill as it belonges to the ground and environment, growing out of the terrain.
