BRIEF MONADNOCK LIFE WITH OBJECTS This workshop explores the idea of scale, architectural scale that is. The aim is to obtain a territory of objects that is deliberately unclear. Where the interior merges with the exterior, the scale of furniture merges with that of buildings, where big becomes small and small becomes big. Throughout history, the idea of scale has fuelled discourse and experiments, the idea is to question and challenge this basic tool of architectural expression. Besides buildings, Aldo Rossi designed and produced small models. Atmospheric, melancholic spaces, containing spatial intentions merged with domestic elements. Bringing in mind the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio de Chirico, where the exchange, merging and blending of interior and exterior seemed to be among the constant motives. To frame the content, make use of both contemporary elements as historical. As a method, in order to obtain a certain degree of magic realism, one starts from a physical space: choose one. In order to charge such space, one chooses a fragment of building, in scaled form. The task is to produce a suggestive design of an interior space, containing: 1 window 1 fireplace 1 piece of furniture 1 monumental gesture 1 architectural model The space should contain objects that express materiality, moments of refinement, and of abstraction. As a product, one image of the physical model will be the objective, which will be photographed, along with a written paragraph describing the possible narrative of this space.

MONADNOCK FINAL WORK

Looking out of my window I see a cityscape, while looking through it I see an interior. The windowframe is my threshold, it is the only thing I understand, all else is up to my imagination.

“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else. Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities, 1972

MONADNOCK FINAL WORK

A urban grid rises up with marble planes. The buildings can’t help themselves but to disorderly occupy each room.

When you don‘t have a feeling of scale, it is easy to fall in loneliness. But this loneliness could also be a blessing.

To be a GOOD architect you have to free your interior Gulliver from the Lilliputians. To be a GREAT architect, you have to transform yourself in a Lilliputian, and learn all the rules that they live with.
