MESSAGE FROM THE MAGELLAN MBA PROGRAMME COORDINATORS
Prof. Jorge Farinha Programme Co-Coordinator, The Magellan MBA Prof. Fernando Teixeira dos Santos Programme Co-Coordinator, The Magellan MBA
Welcome to The Magellan MBA Staged in one of Europe’s best Business Schools (ranked at nr.66 by the Financial Times in 2013) we have put all our best resources and know how into The Magellan MBA to provide you with a first class programme, with a special emphasis on innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and soft skills training. We have also accomplished a truly international programme, where international students have been the majority of the class in the last editions, with origins covering all major continents. Our carefully chosen faculty, the vast majority of which holding doctoral degrees from top business schools around the world, combine scientifically sound teaching and high pedagogical capabilities. Virtually all the teachers at the Magellan MBA also possess relevant professional experience as managers or consultants under a strong international perspective that enables them to bring to class a particular concern with real business applications. Our corporate partners, many of which are multinational corporations, are an additional reminder of the market and business perspectives we need to address throughout the entire programme. You can thus expect a practical, yet academically rigorous, approach and the use of advanced teaching methods with a strong focus on teamwork and group interaction. Combined with a particular attention to
every single detail, I am sure that this has truly yielded a world-class programme and that the quality of our Magellan MBA will exceed even the most demanding expectations. The Magellan MBA’s international accreditations by AMBA (Association of MBAs) and EFMD/EPAS (European Foundation for Management Development, Programme Accreditation System), two of the most important MBA accreditation agencies worldwide, ensure that we follow the highest and most demanding international standards of quality in management education to the benefit of MBA students and their future employers. This also means that The Magellan MBA is well placed within the restricted set of schools worldwide that share such double accreditation. We strongly believe that the current programme structure and contents are indeed world class and fully adopt the best practices in management teaching worldwide. To ensure a top quality student cohort all our MBA candidates are rigorously scrutinised and chosen on the basis of merit, potential, motivation and the need for diversity. Also, small class size ensures that personal attention is given to each individual student, be it during the programme or in terms of subsequent career support. Welcome to the Magellan MBA. A path that will lead you to a higher level of knowledge, achievements and experiences.
We hope you will accept our invitation to set sail and explore a brave, new world. /5

/ New Facilities Porto Business School has new facilities in its modern Matosinhos campus, designed to meet the demands of a top business school which are fully operational from January 2014 onwards, long before the start of the academic year 2014/15. This is a purposely built, state-of-the art modern building with over 10.000 square meters, pleasantly surrounded by gardens and only a few hundred meters away from the largest shopping mall in the North of Portugal and well served by Porto’s Metro network. Criteria including eco-efficiency, urban planning, and fitting with existing infrastructures and surrounding areas were taken into account in the construction of this new landmark building. Porto Business School’s new facilities will allow the school to expand and open new horizons, inspire more out-of-the box thinking, and improve the quality of management practice. This investment will allow the school to double its current number of students. This building, fully eco-friendly, will include all the latest communications technologies and will offer arguably the best working conditions for management learning in the entire country, including a large number of amphitheatres, lecture rooms and student workrooms. It will also benefit from very easy access to the major motorway connecting Porto to Francisco Så Carneiro International Airport (which is within 15 minutes driving distance).

ABOUT FERDINAND MAGELLAN Ferdinand Magellan is famously known as the leader of the 16th century’s expedition that circumnavigated the world. He was the first European to sail across the Pacific Ocean and discover a route by which ships could sail a complete circle around the world. The Straits of Magellan, located at the Southern tip of South America, are named after him. Magellan is acknowledged for having achieved what is usually seen as the most difficult nautical feat of all times. His voyage provided the first definitive proof that the Earth was round and the first good approximation for the distribution of land and water. Magellan’s trip is also seen as the first ever attempt of globalization.

Alumni Testimonials
“The MBA made me develop mainly three things: business knowledge, personal drive and a global network. With a background in psychology, the business concepts were pretty new to me. The MBA gave me another language to understand the world. Classes were essential, but side projects such as Cohitec or the John Molson Case Competition in Canada, taught me how to apply and sell (communicate) them to international audiences. The contact with successful executives, the visit to established companies and the discussions in and outside classes made me look sharply to business opportunities and believe I could take advantage of them. The international and diverse backgrounds’ class, the contact with international professors and the executive program in the University of Texas were important triggers to develop a global understanding of business.” Madalena Santos / The Magellan MBA 2012/2013 Management Consulting
Using the social networks to promote The Magellan MBA Students / 26
“It’s fashionable to say companies are looking for diversity, but are they really prepared to accept something completely different? Or still value predictability first? Coming from a healthcare background, barely none relevant management experience, the work developed with Career Services was fundamental to understand my positioning in the job market. Together we found how and what to communicate, and built the self-confidence needed to explore the vast network that Career Services established through time, resulting in an internship and job position right after graduation. One year after The Magellan MBA graduation we still communicate regularly, as building your career is always a work in progress. Career Services it’s definitely a keeper!!” Rita Pinto / The Magellan MBA 2011/2012 CEO staff | 32 Senses Group
Personal Development
The Magellan MBA / 2014-2015 Edition
“A year after graduation I can definitely say that learning at The Magellan MBA was highly effective. In day to day management or while negotiating important contracts I often remember lessons learnt during that year. Career Services were a very important part of this amazing experience of taking the Magellan MBA. My personal marketing plan became richer and the contacts made were critical to my life after the MBA. Also programmes like The Followers Programme, CoHiTec and other partnerships with key national and international institutions allowed me to grow professionally.”
“What the Career Services has provided me is a brand new angle of looking at myself as well as an integrated consultancy service. With the MBA study, I have found my potential besides language learning, teaching and interpreting. It opens a new door to me: being a business woman!” Nisong Cai / The Magellan MBA 2012/2013 Communication and Sustainability Internship | REN
