Setúbal up by 22% The Port of Setúbal handled around 4.2 Mt in 1H/14, a 22% increase year on year Export flows came to 2.6 Mt, accounting for 66% of throughput when the 0.1 Mt of coastwise Portuguese trade is discounted from the total. The port covers a broad range of cargoes and the common user terminals handled 2.5 Mt in the first half (+ 28%). Overall general cargo throughput was up by 24% to 2.3 Mt and dry bulks traffic increased by 26% to 1.7 Mt. Container traffic shot up by 75% to 75,000 TEU, with short sea (Med, Northern Europe) and West Africa sectors all performing well. The number of new cars moved over the ro-ro terminal increased by 20.4% to 78,500 units, of which 60% were exports. Currently Setúbal accounts for around 90% of all new light vehicles traffic moved over Portuguese sea ports. The prime mover in this is VW Autoeuropa in Palmela, which according to ACAP (Portuguese Automotive Association) turned out 55,000 new cars in 1H/14, of which 45,000 were exported over Setúbal, including 14,000 units for Japan and China.
