letter from the president

August Sunshine

C

The only way to describe our cover!

ertainly a ray of light, but also a boy with a passion for acting and a kick-butt attitude after spending a long day on the beach in the sun. We open this issue to you with a stunning feature on the little prodigy who has taken on a huge role in continuing the beloved “Boy Meets World” phenomenon in the remake “Girl Meets World”. I must admit that I’d loved this show as a young teen and I’m happy to pass the love along to my children!  So yes, I am a fan of the show and of course August Maturo, who onset is as fun as he seems in the show. Styled by the outstanding Naz Meknat and photographed by Anna Gunselman, we see just how versatile this little man can be! Speaking of style, don’t forget to get acquainted with our editor’s choice for featured designer Coco and Ginger. Also, get your daily dose of style inspiration for you, the parent of that posh little one, and head over to “Posh Looks for Mom and Dad”- the Parents’ Edition.  In speaking with August we find that a great deal of time goes into filming and being on set with his on-screen family, so in his free time he enjoys spending it with his loved ones and traveling. “Travel is part of the deal that comes along with acting and it’s so much fun, I’ve always loved that part even when I was really little!” He tells us, at age 8! (Insert chuckle here) So in honor of our cover star we bring you “Simple Tips Traveling with a Baby and Toddler” for your reading pleasure by contributor Maria Aldana of Earl Grey Style.  As Fashion Week is just around the corner, I remind you to take pride in the little things… bags, shoes, and jeweled accessories of course! All of which you can find at this seasons POSH showcase at NYFW on the main stage! Boy are we thrilled to be featuring some top designers by partnering with FTL Moda to bring you the very best in children’s and adult fashion. Mark your calendars for this most extraordinary event, I’ll be the one with popcorn front and center! ;)

Simple Tips

TRAVELING WITH A BABY AND TODDLER by Maria Aldana of Earl Grey Style Summer is almost over and you would begin to imagine that traveling with your littleones has come to an end as well, but with Fall coming up and all the holidays rightaround the corner, traveling is an all-year round activity for most families! Whether you are traveling by air, train, or the good old-fashioned road trip, being prepared mentally and physically will almost always ensure a positive trip experience for you and your family. I personally contacted a few mama bloggers from around the globe who have traveled with their babies and toddlers and they happily shared some of their best advice for traveling with children, specifically of the baby & toddler age: †POSH KIDS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016

55

“I rotate his toys so whenever we go on a road trip, I pack those toys that have been tucked away and that he will be excited to play with. Especially for road trips, I would suggest to pack snacks generously. If everything goes according to plan, then you don’t need them. But I’ve been stuck in traffic often enough to not underestimate the mood lift a banana can bring to a toddler. As for flying, I highly recommend using a carrier. When we flew with a four-month old, we used the Ergo and in September when we fly to Japan we will use our hiking carrier.”  Kate @aheartymatter of  www.aheartymatter.com

I only went on one flight/holiday and our son was two-years old. Being relaxed and doing most of the prep work before is probably my best advice. Pack activities and snacks and hand them out every half our or so. Plus, my experience is that the traveling itself is fun enough for a curious toddler! In regards to packing, we brought the necessities and bought the rest in Spain (milk and diapers).”  Marloes P. @marloespelupessy of  www.meetmarloes.com

Los Angeles based mommy blogger; Ruby Hunt of www.westsidemommy.com lists a few in-flight tips that helped put her mind at ease when recently flying from LA to the East Coast this past summer:  - You’re not alone – there are probably more children on the same flight, with parents who have (and had) similar challenges  - Hearing someone else’s kid cry on the plane doesn’t bother me as much as the sound of my own kid… so when my kid is making a ruckus, I shouldn’t worry too much   - Most passengers use earbuds or headphones and are busy entertaining themselves, so the sound of your kid is the least of their problems   - It’s not likely you will see the people from your flight again

If you are looking for more creative tips on traveling with a toddler and what types of gadgets, fun activities and recommended snacks to bring on cross-country plane rides, I would suggest checking out one of her recent blog posts- “How My Toddler Stayed Entertained on our Cross-Country Flight”.................................................. Having just recently flown from Los Angeles to New York City with my 3-year old son, my advice is to get a good night’s sleep before hand to prepare your mind and body for the travel day ahead. I also like to dab a few drops of lavender oil on my neck and my wrists to keep the anxiety away. But most of all, the best advice most parents would have to agree on is to have fun, pack light and be prepared ahead of time! And as Kate of A Hearty Matter says “Keep your chill game on!”  Earl Grey Style www.earlgreystyle.com  Instagram: @earlgreystyle

POSH KIDS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016

I

t was easy to see the level of diligence written across the young actor’s face as well as his ability to simultaneously maintain a certain level of silliness and seriousness. This is a trait that August most likely carries with him onto the set of his current project, the hit Disney-channel series “Girl Meets World”. August worked on a variety of shows including the likes of “Weeds”, “Bones”, and much more. The adorable, curly-haired boy can also be found in other shows as a minor role and many commercials. It is obvious that upon meeting him that his bubbly nature is portrayed just as well in real life as on the screen. The team was extremely excited to have August grace the pages of Posh Magazine. This talented kid is certainly going placesand he knows it!   What made you initially interested in show business? Well I didn’t know it was “show business” I just knew I wanted to be on a stage since I was 4 after I was in a church play.  You’ve been on such a variety of shows ranging from a drama such as “Bones”, a more mature comedy like “Weeds”, and your current show, the Disney sitcom “Girl Meets World”. What’s been your favorite genre to work on?  I love working on Girl Meets World because even though it’s funny, we get to do drama too. It’s different from other sitcoms that way. I love to do funny roles, but I love the serious stuff too.  “Girl Meets World” has an incredibly star-studded cast. How does it feel to be working under the influence of actors and actresses like Ben Savage, Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, and so much more?  It’s great- they are my family now forever. They teach me so much.

How is the atmosphere on set?  The set is so much fun. Today after we were done working we played “running charades” on-set. Even Rider Strong played! We have so much fun! We have two teams and run back and forth between the classroom set and Matthew’s apartment.   If you were to have dinner with anybody in the entire world, who would it be and why?  The President of the United States! I want to know what it’s like to be President. I would ask him so many questions! So we know that you have very severe allergies and that your family has gone so far as to get involved with the EpiPen campaign. How do these allergies affect you on a dayto-day basis?   Well, I have to check everything I eat. My mom reads all the labels and now I do too. We have to be careful when we eat out. We always talk to the chef and let them know about my allergies. My mom always makes sure she carries safe snacks for me also.  Any advice for kids suffering from severe allergies just like you?  I would say don’t let it get you down. Everyone has something they have to deal with. Just try to be safe and try to use your allergy as a way of teaching others about what it means.  Your character, Auggie Matthews, has a very explosive personality. Do you think you guys are similar?  Yes, I think we are similar in a lot of ways. I would say that I’m not so girl-crazy in real life though.  You’re able to sing, dance, and act- a triple threat! Would you like to branch out from acting in the future?  Yes! I would love to be a singer like Sabrina Carpenter someday. Maybe I’ll do more musical theatre. I just know that whatever I do- I just like to make people happy.

coco and ginger MADE BY REAL PEOPLE

by MIA GINDIS

I

t’s true that Coco and Ginger clothes cost more than their mass-produced counterparts. But then Coco and Ginger clothes are made by real people in real time (consider changing “real time” as I have no idea what the opposite of “real time” is, maybe use artisan or hand made or something else). “Our business started small,” says Bali-based founder Saffron Pugh-Blaby, who started making her tropically-inspired clothes for girls when friends had asked what her own daughters, Coco and Ginger, were wearing. “We approached skilled artisans to create our clothes and as we’ve grown, instead of moving into factories, we’ve expanded our network of mostly home-based seamstresses, tailors, and artisans across the island.” The story behind a Coco and Ginger piece begins with an idea, inspired perhaps by a vintage blouse her daughter Coco unearths at a local market. The design process is playful and low-tech, says Saffron, who finalizes her pieces using actual mock-ups rather than a computer. “I play and pick exact hues and trimmings. It’s organic, creative, dynamic.” Working on the rice paddy set in the sunshine-filled Coco and Ginger studio, Pak Wayan, the main tailor, oversees the drafting of patterns and samples. “Then Ginger will try on the samples in white and give us feedback,” Saffron says. “How does it fall, swing, and twirl?” Coco and Ginger’s signature fabrics- featuring the label’s iconic vivid vermilions, tangerines, lemons, jades, turquoises, and indigos- are hand-printed using old-fashioned screen printing techniques in a Denpasar workshop while embroidered pieces are chalk screen-printed before being whisked off to Ibu Annie’s home in Denpasar. A collective of women hand-stitch the items in an island-wide network of homes. “The women can manage their households while also earning money to help, for instance, keep their kids in school.” Saffron says. Meanwhile, tailors visit the studio and cut the fabrics before taking the pieces back to their own workspaces to sew until completion. The final pieces go through quality control and the pieces are hand-washed, sun-dried, and ironed; swing tags are attached and then finally packed. Overseeing it all is Saffron’s production director, Ibu Komang, who has been part of the team since Coco and Ginger debuted in 2008. Saffron’s business partner, office manager, and accountant Pak Putu keeps it all humming smoothly behind the scenes. Putu and Dewi help customers make their selections in the Coco and Ginger Bali store. It’s a long process each season but one marked each step of the way by an integrity not found so often in the fashion world, and a philosophy that sees workers and the environment respected. Posh Kids Magazine got a chance to interview Coco and Ginger, so sit back, enjoy, and learn more about them.

What spurred the creation of Coco and Ginger? I had already lived in Bali for a number of years before our second daughter, Ginger, was born. I did not want to return to my job in an Bali based clothing company, but instead wanted to follow my passion for children’s design and have an altogether more family-friendly business. I had connected with some amazingly talented women, and from there we developed a very old style hand stitch/embroidery based collective. Things continued to grow slowly from there on out.  What inspires the rich color pallette? The Balinese have an amazing colour palette that they reference. Everyday I drive past a ceremonial clothing shop where the girls and I marvel at the combinations on display, playing a game picking out our favourite. Soft pink with leaf green or vermillion with an azure blue... life is very colourful in Indonesia. This is very inspirational and contributes to my creations.  Coco and Ginger is unique in many ways, such as its handcrafted -rather than factory-made- fabrics. What encourages you guys to keep from making the switch? In the beginning the company were so small, we could not do our own prints. It is a switch we have made slowly. We

can have a complete vision and idea and follow it through. We partner with a work shop in Denpasar that uses a very simple screen printing process and I just adore the wabi-sabi nature of working this way.  In what countries is Coco and Ginger currently available? Are you planning to branch out in the future? Currently we are in Australia, USA, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, and the UAE. We also have an online store on our website to reach those other countries not represented. We are always open to other countries but it’s very important to connect with the right people to represent us.  How has the exponential growth in Coco and Ginger’s popularity affected you guys? Did you start doing anything differently? We have always been very careful about growth because we do not work with any factories. All of our collections are sewn by the same five families at their homes. It has been very important to us to maintain quality but also to pay a true living wage. The plan is to slowly add to our network as we grow organically and ethically.  What fabrics do you usually incorporate in your pieces? We are very fond of a fine lightweight cotton- we love its drape and coolness. We also use silk in our collections; a favourite memory from my childhood was the feel and sway of a few beautiful silk dresses.  Your collections have a very vivid, warm-weather vibe to them. Seeing that you sell in cooler places than Indonesia, would you ever consider making clothing for the fall season, or this is a strictly summer-wear company? We have done a small fall season in the past and have been inspired to design one for next fall. It will be about providing some key layering pieces and special embroidered tunics that can be worn under coats and over tights. But yes, summer is our passion.  How many collections does Coco and Ginger currently have? What inspired the most recent one? At the moment,

we have one summer and one high summer per year. The most recent collection, Folk Song, was inspired by a Joni Mitchell song, a trip to France trawling vintage shops in Paris with my 16 year old, and hidden antique lace ateliers in Aix en Provence... I was channeling bougainvillea terraces, straw hats, stone swim-ming pools warmed by the sun, and long driveways leading to hidden gardens.  What’s the age range that Coco and Ginger designs

clothing for? We do 3 ranges: baby, children 2-10 years, and a tween/teen that goes up to age 15.  Where can people purchase Coco and Ginger? We are online at www.cocoandginger.com and check out our stock list there.  What would you like our readers to know more about your brand? We hope that your girls enjoy dancing and twirling in it and that it brings joy.

ids’ rooms are very important for our little ones as they act as their own special universe where they can be whatever they can imagine… pirates, princesses, astronauts… and everything can happen because imagination rules there. Nicolás’s room is the perfect example of it- a circus tent has been created on the ceiling to wrap everything with the magic circus world. We can imagine the clowns, the trapeze artists, the lions, and the elephants sharing our children’s funniest adventures. This creative space was created by Nimú, an interior design studio created in 2005 by two partners with lots of talent and imagination. They wanted to keep all that wonderful light in that huge space while they added a childish look according to the room’s use. They have clearly got it. Those white walls focus the attention on all the details that show bright and brilliant colours to enliven the whole space. From the circus tent painted on the ceiling to every single toy, we can feel that fantastic kids’ spirit around this room with vintage touches. Everything is simple but also necessary, there’s nothing missing and anything is too much, as they have chosen each part carefully to guarantee a balanced and comfortable atmosphere. If we take a look to the furniture we will soon realise that every piece tells its own story with the charming vintage style that make you fall in love at first sight. We can imagine all the memories they could talk about if they spoke… this is an extra bonus for the functionality and

exclusivity present in all of them, don´t you think? Apart from the spectacular look of the room, we must mention its functionality. Nicolás’ parents wanted to find a way to keep toys perfectly organised and Nimú found the perfect (and coolest) solution: great vintage hangers with fabric bags to keep lots of toys in a chic and functional way. Toys play a main role in every children’s room, especially if they are as cute as these ones that can easily be considered as little vintage treasures and fill the whole space with personality and are the perfect way to define the play area. They remind us of those wonderful glammy antique toys shops from the Old Continent but with a new chic look provided for that natural bright light that covers them with an updated energy. Have you seen that wonderful carton rocket? It’s perfect to travel to the furthest corner of their imagination but also the original touch that makes a room special. The whole set has been perfectly created by combining pieces with different origins. The crib was created by OEUF NYC, the wardrobe is from La Europea (Madrid), the vintage chair comes from Pez (Madrid), the table and the shelves are from Ikea, the paper plane comes from a Portuguese market, and the rocket was purchased at Kids on the Roof. As you can see there are lots of sources where you can find the perfect details to transform their room into their own amazing world without losing functionality or comfort. Do you dare to dream about magic spaces like this?
