1 Walking For Heroes By Elva Carri Alex Ellis-Roswell began walking around the entire coast of the UK and Ireland in August of last year. So far, he’s racked up an astonishing 3,500 miles of the 9,500 he’s attempting to travel. What is he doing it for? For heroes, though he’s becoming a hero himself in the process. All the money raised by his trip is going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). “The volunteers who give up so much of their time and put themselves at risk for others in need are heroes.” Alex says he felt the need to change his life entirely after losing his father in 2013 and by August of 2014, he had set off on his incredible journey.

“What is he doing it for? For heroes, though he’s becoming a hero himself in the process.” What’s his favourite thing about the journey? Why it’s you of course! “Some people travel to explore nature. And although the coast around Britain and Ireland is plenty beautiful, diverse and ever changing, it became clear to me quite early

on that I was most interested in exploring people. What makes us similar. What makes us stand out from one another.” He’s shared stories of the kindness, generosity and humour of the people he’s met along the way, giving him a home for the night, a meal and company. 7 2 Choice, Chance, Change 3 U.S. Bee Numbers Reach 20 By Claire McNamara Nobody feels positive about life all the time and how we look at life is as important as what happens to us. According to research by Stanford professor Sonja Lyubomirsky, for her book ‘The How of Happiness’, while we each have a ‘set point’ for happiness, it can be reset and leaves 40% of our happiness under our own control. The highly effective applied to this theory. Choices are at the heart of our humanity. For every choice, there is a consequence. A consequence also has consequences! Choices shape who we are, how we live, and what we become. But our attitude also plays a pivotal role. It’s Monday morning. One student arrives at school thinking “I have to be here”, another is thinking “This is where I want to be”. Our attitude not our aptitude determines our altitude.

So, the best way to realise positive change in your life is by making ‘choices’. We are invited to choose life and to capitalise on it. There’s been a lot of concern in recent years about dwindling bee numbers. Not only do honey prices become less sweet, but the knockon effect of extinction on our fragile ecosystems would have big consequences. Bees pollinate around 70 per cent of the crop species that feed 90 per cent of the world. They are such hard workers that they’re indirectly responsible for $30 billion a year in crops! A number of factors have contributed to the drop in numbers and last year a joint EPA-USDA study revealed that the biggest problem is a parasite called ‘the Varroa destructor’, a type of mite that is highly resistant to insecticides that beekeepers have used to control the mites from inside the beehives.

“Bees pollinate around 70 per cent of the crop species that feed 90 per cent of the world.” However, the problem isn’t being overlooked. The White House Bees and Other Pollinators, a 64-page policy framework to save bees and other pollinating animals. Further research carried out for USDA Honey Production surveys then found that bee numbers are now at a twenty year high thanks to efforts by commercial beekeepers. They came up with two strategies to replenish their stock; splitting one healthy colony into two separate colonies and adding one new queen bee, or buying new bees and a queen to replace the lost bees. While it doesn’t solve the real causes, it’s good news for plants awaiting pollination, while we continue to come up with great local, sustainable solutions for the long term health and safety of bee populations. In the meantime, if you see a tired little bee in your own garden, be sure to leave him out a spoon of sugar water solution to help him out. usda.gov

Yemeksepeti, a Turkish online food ordering company, was bought out by German delivery company Delivery Hero this year. Selling moment for any shareholders. In this case, Yemeksepeti was bought for $589 million, the largest ever acquisition of a Turkish involvement by taking up a management role within Delivery Hero, but made a very surprising decision as the sale came. Kerry & David Lyons Coming from two different countries, England and Ireland, our paths wouldn’t typically have crossed. But the end of a 12 year relationship and a friend’s dislocated shoulder (long story), meant we were thrown together on a completely out-ofcharacter trip for both of us, which just so happened to be on the west coast of America. A 14-day trek across LA, San Francisco, Yosemite, Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Phoenix and San Diego along with 13 strangers turned out to be the happiest coincidence of our lives so far. To have an authentic conversation you will have to take a path through a dimly lit region at the edge of your soul, a place

I have been, and still am, tracking something and I am not quite clear about what it is. I thought it was regarding money. Now, as always, it is morphing L_summer_12_d1.indd 19 into something much larger and it is an interesting one with lots to glean from it already. It has to do with a shift of energy between the ‘rules’ we keep for ourselves, and those we have for other energy. It began to crystalise in front of me in New York, as I watched were claiming, how to get it, and how that affected other energy. This is what I saw: 1 An inequality of happiness and freedom as we were actually creating what we want. This usually came from a deep-seated belief that we couldn’t/wouldn’t get it anyway, or that we had to struggle to get it, so we wouldn’t allow ourselves to acknowledge we were creating it. 2 We settled for less and then made excuses that whatever we created was enough. And then we said it was enough. 3 We thought there should/had to be more. So we were never content. All this, in one way or another, led to an inequality of the exchange of energy. It also pointed to the fact that

When that happens, confidence is truly in place. So, ask yourself: do I have a lot of great, inspired ideas that I never do anything with? Or do you push and work and strive doing ANYthing, just to try and create, without a lot of success? Stop and take time to nurture your feminine. Allow your channel to open and receive divine guidance, and then use the power that is in place to radiate that out. Then the creation is automatically in place, and confidence is reinforced. Confidence is not something you get. Confidence is the vibration of knowing that you are. Be the knowing of the Creative Force that is you, and confidence is a no-brainer. Literally. “Feel into the balance of when the energy feels equal and peaceful” we are not actually saying what we want, knowing the experience of joy after fully receiving it. The quote the channel gave me: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I want to extend that to ourselves, also: Do unto yourself as you would have others do unto you. Are we giving ourselves the love? Are we giving ourselves the encouragement? Are we giving ourselves permission to say and receive what we want? Are we giving ourselves the joy of knowing we are accepted, honored, respected, seen and heard in this life? And are we giving that to others? Are we asking more for a service so we can experience our worth by getting MORE of an exchange in energy? Or less so we can justify our perception that we don’t deserve? Look back over the last week and feel into the balance of when the energy feels equal and peaceful. As I was doing this around a situation, I was given this clear guidance: In order for me to feel my integrity, or to be in integrity, I had to give more than I needed to give.

That creates an imbalance for me in the 05/06/2012 exchange of my energy with other energy. And it sets up the experience of “not ever having enough to give.” Even down to Are you asking too much for the service/time/expertise you are offering in relation to how you are feeling? Look for the intention underneath that is driving it. Are you asking too little in relation to the energy exchange with other energy? Let’s demand that we hear and know the highest truth about what our true perceptions of ourselves are, because that creates the outcome. When we know our self-worth, and we know others’ self-worth, the exchange automatically goes into the correct alignment of the scales, and all is harmoniously balanced. Emotions are an intrinsic and inevitable part of being human. You will experience a whole host of feelings, some comfortable and others less so. When it comes to enjoying true emotional freedom and better health, you need to learn how to be at peace with how you feel. You may notice I didn’t just suggest that you ‘get rid of your negative emotions’. This is because meditation goes beyond managing and controlling emotions to give you the ability to be in harmony with however you happen to feel. With many of us having been raised by adults who were unwilling to experience the whole range of their own emotions, it is rare in my experience, to have been taught to feel emotions fully. We have learned to tone down or turn away from intense feelings that are perceived as problematic. Taught that some emotions were positive and others negative, we may have been conditioned to avoid the ‘bad’ ones at all costs. This has led to fearing certain feelings and constantly trying to control them, believing that it is somehow wrong to feel bad sometimes. Two years after I started meditating regularly I went to my spiritual teacher to tell him that I didn’t think the meditation was working. Knowing that it was only

“Peace is not the absence of emotions.” my expectations that needed some help, he enquired, “How do you know it isn’t working?” I explained that I was still feeling anxiety. His response was nothing short of mind-blowing as he declared, “Peace is not the absence of emotions.” compute the statement! Peace is not the absence of emotion? How could I experience peace, if I was feeling anxious? It made no sense at all. However, these seven words became one of the biggest things I’ve learned in my meditation journey. Without realising, I’d picked up beliefs about what peace would feel like and what had to happen to experience it. Peace had always eluded me because I had assumed it was a state of no emotion. I was experiencing emotions all the time so I felt I was failing somehow at being peaceful. Since exploring the possibility that peace is not the absence of emotions, I’ve

discovered that I don’t need to make them go away to experience peace. Learning how to be at peace with how you feel is achieved by being aware of the consciousness that’s observing your emotions. The more Self-aware you can

an unconditional calm that is perfect, whole and completely untouched by any temporary feeling. Here is why. Consciousness is aware of your emotions. Consciousness is already and always peaceful. Therefore, peace is aware of your emotions. I appreciate that you might have invested a huge amount of time, effort and money in the search and acquisition of ‘positive’ emotions, and now here I am suggesting that you don’t need to wait a second more or spend a single penny, because the peace you seek is aware of your mind. Next time you meditate, I recommend playing with being comfortable feeling uncomfortable. Doing so can completely change your relationship with your emotions and lead to true emotional freedom and true peace. Jung Intimate relationships can be a source of much joy and much pain. So how can we constantly see the beauty in in your intimate relationship or even questioning what is it about. Perhaps there is a need to look differently as to what intimate connection is about. Being in a relationship is not only about having a companion, or forming a close partnership, it’s where connection between another is direct, unrehearsed, fresh and heart-to-heart. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love, says in her second book, ‘Committed’, “To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow, this is a human offering that can border on miraculous.” Jett Psaris and Marlena S. Lyons, authors of the book, ‘Undefended Love’, say “The way that you love is the way you can feel all the time “ But how do we make these statements the reality of our relationships? 1 Like it all! beauty and at other times the beast in

us! No matter how painful, there is something to learn, to integrate and transform. Problems that arise can be welcomed as opportunities to move to deeper connection. Couples consciously working on this will discover more about themselves and their partner or loved one, learn to engage with them in a deeper dialogue and discover ways to express the most profound and untamed aspects of the psyche.

“Create evenings dedicated to taking the time to love” 2 Use ‘I’ statements instead of ‘You’ statements Say how you feel i.e. “I feel frightened, I feel angry, I feel ashamed.” Conscious relationships don’t put responsibility on the other for how they react. Move attention away from the other to what is happening for you. It then becomes an opportunity for reclaiming lost and forgotten places of

20 your own soul. Speak what is happening with courage and honesty. Take time to back to talk about it, and to listen to what went on for the other person - without judgment. This truly allows deep healing and trust in sharing frightened parts of your personality. 3 Practise gratitude Regularly share with your partner what you appreciate about them. It could be that they remember to get the Saturday newspaper, how they look so attractive or honouring their courage to be real. and as a being of light and teacher in your life. Also see yourself in the same. To break the habitual judgments, practice appreciation, mentally and verbally. 4 Have love dates Create evenings dedicated to taking the time to love, to talk, to meditate together, to give each other a massage, to prolong lovemaking. for not doing it but do it anyway! It feeds the roots of connection and creates safety for rich sharing, emotionally and physically. In enhancing your ability to see the beauty in your relationships, I wish you the courage to share from your loving heart, to brail your way with what you are feeling, so as to discover the hidden depths and beauty of your being in a relationship. In the western world we’re taught that we must base our choices on logical reasoning, but many spiritually open-minded people have recognised the need to listen to their hearts. But there are common pitfalls and misunderstandings in attempting to listen to the heart that we can overcome through ‘Karunyamarga’, the spiritual art of compassion. The heart feels everything – true feelings like gratefulness, generosity, acceptance or kindness can give us direction, but we also feel emotions like jealousy, greed, anger and pain – results of defense reactions and aversions. Vimala Rodgers loved handwriting from a young age and spent years collecting handwriting. On hearing this is someone’s passion, you may wonder where it could lead – particularly in an age where we are much more frequently found typing or tapping than sitting with a pen and paper. But Vimala discovered the power an alphabet could have to change our brains. By changing how we write, she says we can begin to uplift our lives. Vimala and researchers studied this process at Stanford University to record and document the effects. Through neuroplasticity or cortical remapping, something we can do through handwriting, we can improve how we see ourselves, our lives and the solutions and opportunities all around us. Vimala’s ‘t’ is unusually crossed at the very top which feels like a hard one to change, but on being told that Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa all wrote their ‘ts’ in this way, I’m willing to give it a shot! When I asked about the effects of typing versus handwriting she explained an important difference. In typing, we’re accessing the reptilian, primitive part of our brain. When we write by hand we’re accessing the prefrontal cortex, the region associated with orchestration of thoughts and actions in

accordance with internal goals. An Organic Evolution THE SPIRITUAL INSIGHTS OF KOSI. Interviewed by Paul Congdon.

Kosi, who was born Jill L. Warner in Pennsylvania, grew up in the suburbs of McLean Virginia. She studied Fine Arts and established a successful career in computer science. However, feeling her success offered no lasting happiness, her spiritual quest began, leading her to many of the world’s most renowned teachers. Now she herself is a spiritual teacher, sharing how we can come to the freedom, peace and laughter that she says is ever present in the core of our being. She ran a course in Dublin recently called ‘The Yoga of Now’, teaching participants to allow and surrender. “We’re used to following the mind, having an internal dialogue, but in this workshop everything is focussed on surrendering the powers of mind to this moment, to discover what’s actually here and not what we imagine is here.” The three primary aspects of what she teaches are satsang or self-inquiry, silence, through meditation, and sound or mantras and she teaches much of this in her book, Organic Awakening. “I called the book Organic Awakening because the minute you recognise yourself as pure awareness, which is seeing the consciousness that is looking through your eyes, it’s like own heart, and that starts a natural, organic evolution of your consciousness. And so it’s effortless, just like a plant grows.” She travels the world to teach these ideas and practices and will be in Ireland this September. However, I have handed out notes, shaking like a leaf but where there’s a will there’s a way. 3 Organise something that makes it comfortable to create a slightly bigger social circle than your normal gang. In GirlCrew, a crazy little friendship group for women that I run, we organise mixed pool tournaments from time to time. Everyone is required to bring someone of the opposite sex and it’s a great excuse to say to a crush, “Hey, I really want to go to this pool tournament/games night/ whatever but I need a partner or I can’t go. Any chance you’re free?” By organising the place and the activity, it means you also get to do something you enjoy and feel superb in the midst of.
