positively newsworthy the chocolate factory By Ben Millett

A world of pure imagination The Chocolate Factory is a new creative community developing in the old Williams & Woods building on King’s Inn Street in Dublin. The first concrete building in the city is being rejuvenated to become a creative hub comprised of studio spaces for design, art, music, dance, photography and many other creative areas. The ethos of the Chocolate Factory is a creative community where community is the centre of focus with everybody helping each other out. We are also focused on reusing and upcycling anything we can as part of the development and building work going on in the CF, and want to be as sustainable as possible in every aspect of the project. Ireland’s first rooftop Urban Farm is being created on the roof of the building and aims to produce and educate people on various horticultural techniques and how to create their own urban farm. Already, the Chocolate Factory has artists, designers, bands, photographers, upcyclers, sound designers, Buddhist martial arts and healing experts, horticulturalists, a creative

baker, fashion designers, software designers and many more all becoming part of the community and fuelling the diverse creative atmosphere that is developing. A cafe and restaurant is planned for the ground floor and it is hoped to be open in the next few months, combining a great place to have a coffee or a meeting, with some roof grown food in a creative and industrial atmosphere of the expansive ground floor. This project is breathing some life back into King’s Inn Street and hopefully it will help to expand the creative sector of Dublin to include this beautiful old building and its resident creatives. www.chocolatefactory.ie Other spaces worth a look: www.blockt.ie and www.fumballyexchange.com

a year of 100% wild food Fergus Drennan is aiming to live for an entire year solely (100%) on Wild food, which, even for someone with his extraordinary foraging experience, is quite the daunting task. Because this is, quite literally, the unexplored territory of our age, Fergus is asking for the help and support of the wider community. Not only will his experiences help lay the psychic groundwork for a new way of being in the world, his findings may help us navigate our path forward with a greater depth of knowledge and understanding. Is it possible? How best can we utilise wild food all year round? How does it affect him personally and socially? What are the ecological implications? Fergus says: “We have all played the ‘What if?’ game, imagining what it would be like - including the benefit to ourselves and others - if we did a specific thing every day, or simply more often. I think that to turn such hypothetical imaginings into a living, breathing and vibrant reality, we need to draw on our own unique skills, gifts and talents. In my case, for whatever mysterious reason, my unique sphere of skill and activity lies within the world of foraging and wild food. So-called food security is a perennial issue and, indeed, issues concerning food and the way we as human beings feed ourselves, are of profound importance. Given its ancient pedigree, an exploration focussing on wild food and foraging, in particular, will throw up valuable insights in such a context.” If you want to support him in any way, you can email him at ferguspd22@hotmail.com or donate at www.indiegogo.com/one-yeartotal-wild-food

the connections economy By Kathleen Moore

People have started turning away from large-scale, anonymous companies and towards smaller, local, more authentic ventures. More and more, people want to know the person behind the product they’ve just purchased. They want to see their own personal values being upheld and mirrored in as many exchanges that they have as possible, every single day. Seth Godin, a leading thinker in business, talks about this shift in his new book,The Icarus Deception. “What matters to people now is connecting with other likeminded people; including those they choose to do business with.” He has coined this new economy “The Connections Economy”. Godin describes a new landscape of smaller businesses whose size enables them to deal directly with their customers. These new ventures are more personal, non-corporate and authentic entities set up to do something different and important - both for the personal creators and for people who deal with them. Fantastically, the

“Larger companies can use the size of their organisations for a significant social purpose and reconnect with their customers.” digital and social revolution has enabled such a shift, giving small enterprises access to global niche markets, allowing them to be economically viable for the few who run them. From a big business point of view, all is not lost either. Larger companies can use the size of their organisations for a significant social purpose and reconnect with their customers. This is the fl ipside of the scale of their operations: they can actually make a very positive and real impact on the world. Take, for example, the World’s number one brand: Coke. Coca-Cola, having used the image of the Polar Bear in their advertising campaigns for the last few decades, are now working jointly with the WWF to protect the Arctic – the habitat of the polar bears. Another company giving back is clothing brand Timberland. Since the massive earthquake in 2010, Timberland have been working with a local Haitian NGO to upskill farmers on sustainable farming and improving the forestry of the country. How reassuring to know that the opinion and decisions of a single individual - when expressed and acted upon - can snowball globally and have a real impact by influencing the ways in which large-scale organisations work.

the giving pledge goes global By Trevor Neilson

hero dog’s 911 call People have always seemed to have a soft spot for heroic dogs. Whether it’s TV classics like Lassie or heart-warming family films like Homeward Bound, the idea of dogs rescuing their human masters (or even complete strangers) captures our love and affection as few other things do. So it’s only natural to love hearing about dogs that save people in real life! Here is one true account of a dog that saved a human from perilous circumstances:

“Using their keen sense of smell, animals like Belle can detect abnormalities in a person’s bloodsugar levels.”

A little noticed piece of news emerged in the world of philanthropy in February. A dozen new billionaires signed onto the Buffett-Gates Giving Pledge. The Pledge, established in 2010 by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, encourages the world’s wealthiest individuals to give at least half of their wealth to charity rather than passing it on to their children. With the addition of these signatories, 105 billionaires have now committed a total of $500 billion to philanthropy. This news is important for a few key reasons. First, Gates and Buffett have done a great job of engaging people around the world to donate their wealth to charity. Most people never thought the Pledge would succeed given the entrenched tradition of passing wealth along to one’s children. Even in a country like the U.S. that prides itself upon equality of opportunity, inheritances have historically comprised about 20-50% of wealth accumulation - a tradition that stifles ambition and innovation. The fact that 105 billionaires have signed on, including the latest Pledgers who represent 8 different countries, is an encouraging indicator that the culture of wealth is shifting. As we look to the future, we have reason to hope that this increased commitment to charitable giving will become the social norm. Imagine a society in which extreme giving is the new status symbol for the wealthy. The Pledge could evolve into a giving competition and eventually a Global Philanthropy Award on par with the Nobel Prize. We’ve already seen the concept take shape through the X Prize, which promotes technological innovations for the benefit of humanity. This model of incentivizing philanthropy through competition and peer pressure has proven successful. If we can leverage it further, we stand to change the landscape of philanthropy worldwide. www.twitter.com/trevor_neilson

A 17-pound beagle named Belle is more than man’s best friend; she’s a lifesaver. Belle recently received an award for biting onto owner Kevin Weaver’s mobile phone to call 911 after the diabetic man had a seizure and collapsed. “There is no doubt in my mind that I’d be dead if I didn’t have Belle,” said Weaver, 34, whose blood sugar had dropped dangerously low. Belle had been trained to summon help in just those circumstances. She had been taught to bite down on the number 9 on his mobile phone contacting 911. Belle was the fi rst canine recipient to win the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, given to someone who used a mobile phone to save a life, prevent a crime or help in an emergency. Using their keen sense of smell, animals like Belle can detect abnormalities in a person’s blood-sugar levels. The dog periodically licks Weaver’s nose to take her own reading of his blood-sugar level. If something seems off to her, she will paw and whine at him. “Every time she paws at me like that, I grab my meter and test myself,” Weaver said. “She’s never been wrong.”

spirituality & the city “otherworldly experiences” Camille Donegan Theatre Producer One evening in 1999, I had a breakdown and couldn’t stop crying for no apparent reason. I called my friend and she said: “Well, your Dad’s heading off to Peru next week, maybe you’re worried about that.” With that, the floodgates opened: “He’s going to die there,” I blubbered into the phone. After much hysteria, she calmed me down, but I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I knew I couldn’t talk to my Dad about it, so I wrote him a letter - told him that I had a bad feeling about the trip - and insisted on coming to the airport. I somehow knew it would be the last time I would see him. The weeks went by. One phone call to wish me a happy 22nd birthday and then a postcard in response to my letter: “Thanks for your concern. I’m here for a good time and want to come back. Don’t worry...” A week later, I got a call from my Mum to say my Dad was missing in Peru. His body was never found. It’s in a spiritual tomb on Huascaran in the Andes, where he would have wanted to be buried. www.aliveoproductions.ie

“...I took a wonderful trip through the universe and all the incredible vistas and convergent information at hand.” Kane Fay Director/Producer with Bright Harbour Productions This is my little tale of an epic journey we will all undertake sooner or later. Throughout my life, I followed the credo: “Walk the edge, because that’s where the toes tingle.” Well, my stupidity eventually got the better of me and I killed myself. I jumped off a sixty meter cliff after a lovely thirty meter scuba dive under what looked like a natural diving board atop a cliff face, and died. I had the most sublime of all trips, the most exhilarating articulation with complete freedom of four dimensional space; then the most shameful, as I watched over my friends’ efforts as they tried to revive me; then the most cleansing, as I forgave myself for all past mistakes and was then guided to and through a brilliant light by familiar spirits; then the most welcoming, as I navigated myself through a tunnel of light; and then the most breathtaking and enlightening, as I took a wonderful trip through the universe and all the incredible vistas and convergent information at hand. Then, as I slowed down with fearful thoughts of worry for my children, BANG, I zapped back into my conscious being. www.brightharbour.ie

Jane Topkin Financial Advisor I believe in angels and like the thought that they are all around us. Some years ago, I was playing a big poker tournament. A few days before, it was All Soul’s Day, November 2nd. Our tradition in Estonia is to light a candle and think about special ones who’ve passed away, and so I did. As I was mentally preparing and going over my strategies, my Granny, who passed away almost twenty years ago, was on my mind. I had always felt weirdly connected to her. I spoke to her and asked her to be there for me. An hour later, lights flickered in my hallway (which freaked me out). I was convinced it was her. I thought about her every night before falling asleep. I came second in the game, and am convinced it was through the help of that someone special looking after me.

13 Randy Ralston Sacred Intimate/Truth-Seeker/Unashamed Idealist The Universe speaks to me most strongly when I’m in that magical, ecstatic place where sexuality, consciousness and nature merge - where divine, mystical, embodied union takes place. I began consciously awakening to this at age 10 - first through art and the intense beauty of the living Earth. Then, as I matured, my awareness expanded to include the entire cosmos and art of my own sexuality. Each time I share/facilitate these orgasmic experiences with/for other conscious beings, it is simultaneously the most frightening, new and exciting moment of my life and the most familiar and safe. Whenever there is complete heart-alignment and presence with another being, magic happens - a portal opens to Mystical Divinity and we are drawn in. What used to be isolated, rare moments of profound truth, beauty and sublime orgasmic connection, now occur on a regular basis. The world is my lover, 24/7. WowIndescribable@runbox.com

Sinead Ringwood Stay-at-home Mum/Gospel Singer 6 years ago, I was very ill in hospital. During that time, my friend’s mother died and I was unable to attend her funeral. This upset me greatly, so, on the day of her funeral, I decided to say my own goodbye to her. I closed my eyes and said a little prayer. After I called her name in my mind, I could see her running towards me, not sick anymore and full of joy. She said that she was very happy and was looking forward to seeing who turned up at her funeral. When her daughter came to visit me, I told her in detail the clothes I saw her mother wearing. My friend’s eyes lit up and she told me: “They are the exact clothes we dressed mammy in for her coffin!” I was delighted and privileged to have had such a special encounter, and my friend was happy to know her mother was happy in Heaven.

Earth realm appears to be one of perpetual growth and learning as we seek to come out of the world, rather than immersing ourselves further into it. I doubt that there is a reader of this magazine who has not felt the massive personal and collective shift taking place during 2012 and 2013. On one level, it is reflective of the harmonic dance of two planets that will converge for the third time in less than a year on May 21st; its antecedents taking place during 1988 and 1989, 1964-68, 1948/49, 1933/37 and 1916/17 to name the most recent phases. Whilst we live within a time of revolutionary evolution that is affording us the opportunity to bring new conditions of living into being, we are also experiencing our own personal watersheds. There are some of you that will really feel this titanic shift in a very obvious and tangible manner this coming spring. So, to prepare for this acceleration in your own emergence process, I would ask you to reflect on two previous time periods in your life. Firstly, January through May 2002; Secondly, January through April 1993. If those dates stand out for you, then know that this is a period of your life that is fecund with opportunity to undergo an immense transmutation process, helping you to accelerate on your journey back to the light. If those time frames do not resonate for you, no worries, since this alchemical process is going on until 2015. HINDSIGHT The benefit of looking backwards is to get a feel for the movement that occurred in your soul, since the weather ahead has a similar feel to it. Please do not reflect on your prior growth from within the ego-mind, asking yourself whether the changes were good or bad. It would be more useful to reflect on the mood and intensity of the changes and the areas of your life that underwent those metamorphic processes. Having done that, I would like you to ask yourself whether you can see a similar tone emerging within you in similar arenas of your life now. The tone in 2002 was one of striking, compelling and radical change; the tone in 1993 was a deep purging and soul searching. If so, then know that the time is right in May to utterly transmute your life in consort with the titanic and volcanic shifts occurring around you. Within this realm of Reality, as consciousness appears to splinter from its origin as a singular, unified entity into a dualistic state creating light and dark; awareness and unconsciousness; male and female; there exist five organising

time ahead. Abraham Hicks teaches that an emotionally charged thought is what creates reality, since the universe listens to our feeling state, not the verbally elite thoughts that stem from our egos and brains. Reconnecting to our feeling state is indicated during the eclipse season in late April and May, as three separate portals open up to give you a more immediate access to a higher realm of consciousness, facilitating you to bring God/ Source consciousness directly into your life. These eclipses bode well for reflective practices, so I would gently suggest that you schedule time to spend in deep reflection concerning the release of any stagnant emotions that are polluting your ability to

“...the time is right in May to utterly transmute your life in consort with the titanic and volcanic shifts occurring around you.” principles in life, known as the elements. Within the western astrological tradition, four elements are recognised as being the psychic structures through which consciousness is expressed, the fifth being the overall matrix within which life is housed - Ether. The elements of Fire and Water are the two modes that are being accentuated this spring. At a lower vibrational state of consciousness, it may feel like Fire and Water have little in common. Indeed, Water is used to put out Fire, and Fire is used to heat Water. However, both reflect highly charged emotional states and are required to get things going. Water is Life. Without it we would not exist. It is moulded and shaped according to the matrix into which it flows. Fire is Spirit. It is the life force that animates consciousness. That they are equally strong, reflected in Mercury’s pause in Pisces through March, and Venus’ conjunction with our Logos (the Sun) on March 28th in Aries, means that we can actively cleanse (water) our spirits (fire) and fuel (fire) our emotions (water) with passion (fire) and altruism (water).

see things clearly, thereby eclipsing your ability to manifest reality (lunar eclipse in Scorpio); what ways are you honouring spirit with your body (solar eclipse in Taurus); and how are you spreading your light to those around you with joy and laughter (lunar eclipse in Sagittarius). Accessing Source consciousness through those portals means that you can literally make quantum leaps in your spiritual evolution, raising not only your consciousness, but the awareness of those around you. Gregg Braden talks about the measurable effect on humanity of group intention in his book The Divine Matrix. Essentially, he refers to research undertaken that suggests it only takes the square root of point one percentage of the population to transform the world by intention alone. Think about that in terms of Ireland – that is a mere 223 people needed to embody the cosmic energy and kick start the paradigm shift. 223! It is safe to say that there is more than that number reading this magazine! 2013 is the year - your year to revolutionise your spiritual evolution. My sincerest best wishes for your journey.

If you are single and would like to be in a relationship, the North is the area in which you should also spend more time. 7 In the Southwest, Earth energy will arrive. positive meditation

you are what you seek By Sandy C. Newbigging

Spiritual mumbo-jumbo or statement of Truth?

Ever heard the phrase: “You are what you seek”? For years, I thought it was just some happy-clappy spiritual mumbojumbo. To be told that I was peace when I wasn’t feeling peaceful was not only confusing, but also darn right annoying! That was, until I was taught meditation by a bunch of modern day monks that showed me the truth held within these 5 perplexing words. HOW CAN I BE PEACE IF I’M NOT FEELING PEACEFUL? Imagine you are outside on a clear sunny day, looking up at the sky. Then, out of the blue, a bird flies across your field of vision. Without realising, you take your attention away from the vast sky and follow the flight of the bird. The same happens in your awareness every day. Thoughts and emotions are something you are aware of. They are movement occurring in your mind and body, yet they all happen within the context of still, silent, spacious awareness. Conscious awareness is inherently peaceful – always – irrespective of the thoughts and emotions occurring within it. By learning to let your attention rest, aware of the context of stillness rather than on the constant movement, you can experience a peace beyond what you thought possible. YOU ARE NOT YOUR TEMPORARY THOUGHTS OR EMOTIONS But don’t take my word for it! Stop reading, close your eyes and watch your mind;

19

quietly observe the thoughts happening. Then, whenever you become aware of a thought – which could be about this topic, something you need to do later, or anything else – give the thought a number: one, two, three, and so on. Having done that, how many thoughts did you count: 2, 22, 202? It really doesn’t matter how many. What matters is the fact that you could count even one thought. Why? Because this shows that

emotions coming and going today, there has been an aspect to you that has been here the entire time. An aspect to you that is permanent. That’s your real self. It is continually present, irrespective of the quality or quantity of thoughts that come and go.

BE AWARE OF THE AWARENESS THAT’S AWARE! Not being your temporary thoughts and emotions makes it possible for you to change your relationship with your mind so that your thoughts and emotions can exist without them impacting on your peace and prosperity. Imagine that. The sky doesn’t care how many birds fly through it. Neither does it care if they are white doves or blackbirds. The same is true for your conscious awareness. By using meditation techniques to be more consciously aware, you can experience what your own awareness is like you cannot be your thoughts. Instead, you - which is, yes, you guessed it, peaceful (not are that which is aware of your thoughts. to mention love-filled). A thought is an object and you are the Much serenity and success comes observer of the object. that we can! And that is why turning yourself over to your higher self works better than mentally struggling with the illusion that doing more, and doing it more intensely, creates confidence. When we hold the intention that trust and truth be delivered to us, we can get out of the way and release the doubt that is crippling us. You know you’re nearly at the Earthsong field when you start to spot the road-signs saying “SLOW – Fairies Crossing.” That’s the bit when your heart throws off its chains and you begin to inhale properly again. Earthsong Camps came into being in 2007, andthis year three separate camps will run between May and late July at venues in Tipperary and Clare. They were the dreamchild of renowned drum teacher and community musician John Bowker, with the aim of creating a magical healing space that offers an escape from life in the “system”. The camps offer a place of safety for people to come and be themselves - “a nature reserve for human beings,” as Bowker calls it.

What this looks like on the ground is a page from a kid’s storybook – a field with circles of tents, a forest, giant-sized dream-catchers swaying in the breeze, a café where the seats are bales of straw and at the centre of it all a grand Big Top which serves as the meeting place for all sorts of important events. A sign on the fence reads: “This field may contain nuts,” and for anyone who ever felt at odds with “normal” life, the place is like home. All of the Earthsong Camps are strictly drug and alcohol free, which is a rarity even among eco-friendly festivals. No electronics are allowed on camp, and phones can only be used offsite. The idea is for everyone to “be here now” - to be properly available to connect with yourself and others and not to miss your own experience. Rather than a hardship, the rules are accepted more like a gift – a rare escape from the pull of the digital world. All music onsite is created by the campers – an empowering experience for anyone who has previously only connected with music as a passive listener.

Earthsong Family The safety of this world without alcohol and drugs makes Earthsong an especially appealing place to bring children and teenagers. For little ones, their days at camp offer them something most have never experienced before – the freedom to explore nature, people, creativity and a model of human relationships that they may never see any other time. To see a man hug another man and hold him while he cries, to cook on an open fire, to sit in the middle while around them a bunch of unconnected grown-ups learn to sing a harmony so beautiful it would make an angel blush. After dinner, a human train travels around the camping circles to collect the little ones for their bedtime story, read by gentle and funny grown-ups with space in their hearts for other people’s kids. And it makes you happy-sad to see them skipping away and you ask yourself: “What could it be like, if life was like this all the time?” For kids and teenagers growing up around the Earthsong ethos, you can sense the possibility that they will

learn how to heal themselves regardless of what life brings their way. Over the years, John Bowker has done powerful work with teenagers and this is one of the strongest currents flowing through the Earthsong week. Teens have the possibility of camping in their own circle, and it is a sight to behold to see them devour the freedom and responsibility their independence brings. Dedicated teen-workers are there for guidance and support, and a full timetable of workshops are on offer in music, movement and the healing arts. The workshops for all age groups are at the heart of the camp, and once the ticket price is paid, access to every class is free. There are numerous workshops on offer, including dance, drum, family constellations, astrology, creative writing, laughter yoga, conflict resolution and drama. The workshops range from raucous fun to deep personal development classes. Depending on what you bring with you (inside) when you get there, you will probably find the medicine you need. This is part of the magic of

“What could it be like, if life was like this all the time?” Earthsong – that everyone’s experience is completely individual. For some people, it is a week of pure fun, and for others, a time of profound healing. Earthsong offers a massive opportunity for personal development work, with so many workshops available and the likelihood that you will meet a kind healer on your way to the compost loo, who is happy to offer you time and support. For many, this annual visit to a simple field in the countryside has become their yearly chance to recalibrate their lives – to remind themselves of who they really are and how they want their lives to be. There can be sadness for what

has been lost, and then the celebration of discovering yourself again. Behind it all,Bowker and a team of dedicated coordinators keep all the systems running smoothly, so it seems like this village in a field was always there. They come on weeks before and build it all – café, crèche, playground, cabaret, hot showers, sauna, and beautiful cosy venues to run workshops in. And when it is over, they restore the field to its pristine state, removing every last trace of the settlement that was there. Then the cows come in and graze the field again, until the next year. And when you go home, when you step back through the wardrobe and they’ve hardly noticed you were gone. You might start to tell them a thing or two about it until you realise there’s no point, they won’t believe a word of it, unless you take them back next time and they see it for themselves.

the soul & the body By Patrick Bridgeman

You are immortal. Your body is not.

When you were born, a new perspective was created. A part of our formless self (pure awareness) squeezed itself into a new form (your body) in order to have another unique experience of the infinite variations of physical existence. Seeing the world from your unique perspective, you became identified with your body and circumstances, and this became the basis of your character. The mechanism of separation allows for the experience of relationship, one of the main purposes of life as more than one incarnation. The other main purpose is creation. You were created and you can create, and you can create things that can create other things themselves. So, the ultimate purpose of life is 3-fold: Experience, Relationship and Creation. You are succeeding in this in every single moment. Your body will last a lifetime, and then it will die and rest in peace. Your consciousness will return from whence it came and you will once again be fully aware of the truth of who you are. In the meantime, while you are your physical incarnation, the most fulfilment you can have is to fully express your unique self. To that end, it is a good idea to do more of what you love to do and are naturally gifted at, and to take care of your body the way you would a pet. Pets need the right food and clean drinking water, plenty of exercise and fresh air, an appropriately stimulating and clean habitat, and (depending on the pet) a certain amount of company and cuddles. Is your body getting its RDA of cuddles? Do you live in a home that nourishes your body, mind and soul? How often do you exercise and spend time in nature? Do you drink plenty of fresh, clean water every day?

The foods you eat affect not only your body but also your mind. Emotions are chemicals that are released by certain thoughts - such as stressful thoughts releasing adrenaline and noradrenaline into your body’s chemistry as part of the “fight or flight” response. In the same way, different foods will break down in your body and activate different chemical reactions. Some of these are beneficial to the body and mind, and some are not. The wrong foods can cloud the mind, attract stressful thoughts and activate negative emotions. The right foods for your particular body will promote positive

feelings, peaceful thoughts and clarity of mind. This will, in turn, affect your physical health. Another way the body can affect the mind is through exercise. Exercising the body releases endorphins, which are feel good chemicals. The flip side of this relationship can be found in the use of visualisation as part of athletic training. Athletes who visualise themselves performing their chosen sport to the best of their body’s ability have been shown to significantly improve in their actual performance. A similar principle is applied in Laughter Yoga, where the body and mind are fooled into releasing happy chemicals

“To that end, it is a good idea to do more of what you love to do and are naturally gifted at, and to take care of your body the way you would a pet.” by the gesticulations of smiling and laughing. It seems the body doesn’t know the difference between a real and a fake laugh or smile. Speaking of which, I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase: “Laughter is the best medicine.” Well, I’d say Love is even better for the body and the mind. I recently read that cuddling relieves anxiety and depression, and strengthens the immune system; and I’d well believe it, especially knowing what I know about Oxytocin (the love hormone). While the effect of your physical well-being on your mental health is strong, the effect of the mind on the body is even stronger. Physical health is a good foundation for a happy mind, but the cultivation of a clear mind can lead to the most amazing physical and transcendental experiences of life. Doing this, you can bring more of your god-self into your physical manifestation, and increase the beneficial effect you exert over the Law of Attraction. Happy Mind + Healthy Body = Wonderful Life.

after life Lessons we’re all dying to learn about life after death

In her groundbreaking book, On Death and Dying, Dr Elisabeth Kubler-Ross introduced the concept of the Grief Cycle – a framework for observing and understanding the emotional stages of grieving. These stages are not set in stone in a particular order along a linear timeline, because the grieving experience is acutely individual; but recognising and allowing the cycle can assist a grieving person to identify and make sense of the complicated mass of emotions they are feeling.

28

Denial This first stage of grieving helps us to survive the loss. Denial and shock help us to cope, and make survival possible. There is a grace in denial. It is nature’s way of letting in only as much as we can handle. Anger Anger is a necessary stage of the healing process. Anger is strength and it can be an anchor, giving temporary structure to the nothingness of loss. This anger is just another indication of the intensity of your love. Be willing to feel your anger, even though it may seem endless. The more

you truly feel it, the more it will begin to dissipate and the more you will heal. Bargaining We want life returned to what it was; we want our loved one restored. The “if onlys” cause us to find fault in ourselves and what we “think” we could have done differently. We will do anything not to feel the pain of this loss. Depression After bargaining, our attention moves squarely into the present. Empty feelings present themselves, and grief enters

“We are not dead, and neither will you ever be. You will just get up one day and get out of the movie.” ~ Abraham Hicks

our lives on a deeper level, deeper than we ever imagined. It’s important to understand that this depression is not a sign of mental illness. It is the appropriate response to a great loss. Acceptance Acceptance is often confused with the notion of being “all right” or “okay” with what has happened. This is not the case. Most people don’t ever feel okay or all right about the loss of a loved one. This stage is about accepting the reality that our loved one is physically gone, and recognizing that this new reality is the permanent reality. It is the new norm with which we must learn to live. We must learn to reorganise roles, and reassign them to others or take them on ourselves. Instead of denying our feelings, we listen to our needs; we move, we change, we grow, we evolve. We begin to live again, but we cannot do so until we have given grief its time. People often think of the stages as lasting weeks or months. They forget that the stages are responses to feelings that can last for minutes or hours as we fl ip in and out of one and then another. We do not enter and leave each individual stage in a linear fashion. We may feel one, then another and back again to the fi rst one. Just remember: your grief is as unique as you are. Life Between Lives A recent loss may be the catalyst that unearths a lifelong pattern of suppressed emotion arising from within a family culture; and during an experience such as Life Between Lives hypnotherapy, beautiful insights can occur as to why a loved one has left this life, perhaps planning their exit as an unexpected way to illuminate spiritual growth and deeper understanding. Life Between Lives work leaves no doubt in the minds of participants that we live many times; that part of us remains always in the spiritual realm and we return here to be with one another again and again. Hypnotherapy The eternal part of us, the core energy of who we are, is constantly developing and questing for perfection. Through hypnotherapy, we can access not only the past lives we have experienced in countless reincarnations; we can review the threads running through those lives, the lessons learned, and integrate their relevance with who we are today. We can

meet our loved ones - those with whom we may have reincarnated many times to work with and assist each other as we learn mutually-agreed lessons. Visions of Loved Ones Our loved ones may take many forms, but in our current incarnation we can view and understand in terms of human understanding alone; the understandings we are ‘wired’ to be able to accept. The beings in the spiritual realm will appear in the most appropriate way for each individual concerned and can take on a variety of forms. They may take on their recognisable, beloved human body, usually rejuvenated and healed of suffering; they may appear as beings of light that transmit an instant ‘knowing’ of their identity. The experience is unique to each person. Higher Self Deep trance allows memories to be accessed not just from the unconscious mind but from the Higher Self; that super-consciousness in which resides all that we are and have been. We can encounter welcoming spirits, who come to greet us as we arrive home, to the inter-life. We can meet our guides and the beings who have been with us through countless incarnations, ever present and always supportive. We can go to places of rejuvenation to help heal our energies after challenging lives. To deepen our insight, we can visit the library in which our past lives are documented and recorded; we can meet with our soul group, explore the classes where we and certain of our fellow souls undertake specific learning projects. We can visit the place of body selection and learn why we have chosen to inhabit not only our current body but those from the past; and those we could have chosen. And we can meet with the wise group of elder beings who are our between-incarnations advisors, always there with wisdom, knowledge and understanding. And this unveils a reassurance beyond compare; the knowledge that the spiritual realm – a realm of consistently loving harmony complete with a total absence of judgement that’s unimaginable to humankind – is our natural state of being. Death’s Door Death is merely the means to the next step; the next stage in our soul’s progress. When we are presented with an overview of our past lives, the bodies and geographic locations we have inhabited

“Death is merely the means to the next step; the next stage in our soul’s progress.”

and the purpose of (and lessons resulting from) each experience we’ve had, a sense of profound understanding of the bigger picture - the greater pattern of living - emerges. Perfect Harmony In a recent Life Between Lives session, a participant asked if all the different earthly factions could ever come together in harmony. In reply, she was given an incredibly powerful, reassuring image of a wave, gently washing into a welcoming shore. The wave consisted of colours (some of which she had never seen before and found to be indescribable) that were all in complete contrast to each other but nevertheless blended perfectly and harmoniously as that wave moved in perfection towards, and arrived on, the shore. This image was given together with a deep knowing that all is as it is intended to be; humankind is melding together on its journey and will ultimately reach its intended, perfect destination.

plant medicine By Julia Szvath

Amazon avatar expedition

A few months ago, I had a very strong intuition to go to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest to participate in a program called Amazon Avatar Expedition. The focus of our training was to use a combination of 5 different plant medicines that grow in the Amazon rainforest. Our intention for using these plant medicines was to accelerate the expansion of our consciousness, and then to upload our realisations into the unified field to support the collective awakening. My experience with the Grandmother (Ayahuasca) was like: “You want to experience expansion and explore the essence of your being? Sure, no problem. I will guide you, but first you have to go through this dark forest, which is your own shadow, and face all the darkness!” My trip through this imaginary forest contained my deepest fear of death and it was a very intense ride. When she took me on my journey, the intensity of the experience of losing control of myself and my world filled me with such an overwhelming fear that I reacted with huge resistance that made the whole journey more of a struggle. It didn’t help that the ceremony is in complete darkness, in isolation and in silence apart from the shaman singing the Ikaros - the sacred songs that guide us in our journey. After the first ceremony, when I tried to wrap my head around what just happened to me, my mind went crazy trying to understand this experience, which is impossible because it is so far from the comprehension of the limited mind. In my case, this inner tension of the “control vs. surrender” fight ended in a complete breakdown. Literally, I

30

felt something break inside me and I was flooded with emotions so intense that I couldn’t contain them, so they just flew out. I seriously wanted to quit the whole program. Luckily for me, I had excellent support which helped me through this phase of collapse, which turned out to be a huge breakthrough.

“With the medicine opening this inner door in me, it broke the control of the mind and allowed me to reconnect with my essence…” With the medicine opening this inner door in me, it broke the control of the mind and allowed me to reconnect with my essence, my true nature that somehow felt separated before. She taught me what it is to really surrender from the depth of my heart; to have the deepest trust that, whatever the experience, it can only bring me peace and love; to give over control, recognising that my small, limited mind is incapable of understanding a greater design. When I was able to allow the grandmother to take me and teach me, I could see my shadow so clearly. I saw that the shadow is part of the light which is denied, pushed away from the love and the light of the heart. At that moment, I felt an intense compassion for all parts of myself that I pushed away (my fear, judgements,

jealousy, anger, etc.). I was overwhelmed by deep sorrow, and I felt really deeply that I wanted all of them back, inviting them back to the love of my heart - the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. Suddenly, I saw my radiant heart swirling green and pink light, and slowly all of my pain, suffering and limitation flowed into it and dissolved effortlessly. It was the most amazing experience. I could see how I created my pain and how everything can be healed in love and acceptance. I really experienced wholeness for the first time in my life; not just the mental knowing that we are all one and connected, but the deep feeling of the very essence of it, the very essence of me, and the very essence of creation. As my whole personality shattered, my true self was revealed behind the veil. As I allow myself to integrate and embody the experience, I continue to realise the many blessings and fundamental transformation in my life every day. Truly, I can say that a new world (the real world) opened before me, where the wisdom of the mind is aligned fully with the love of the heart and expressed through the power of the throat. What a mystical, magical experience. www.childrenofthesun.org/Amazon Avatars www.dooroffreedom.com

The Good Life 2.0 community resilience in a changing world

learning from nature By Davie Philip

What do billions of years of resilience have to teach us?

32 THE WORLD’S OLDEST TREE

What does it mean to live a good life, especially in a time when we face so many uncertainties? How do we maintain our health, happiness and collective well-being when the world seems to be unravelling? How do we make a living by collaborating and working together for the common good? These are some of the questions I have been exploring, and attempting to answer, in this column. In my experience, being on a mission to “save the planet” is actually an unhelpful perspective to taking the action needed to reduce our environmental impact. It’s not the planet that needs saving. As nature is dynamic, always changing, turbulent and unforgiving, any “return to nature” thinking needs to be reframed to look at how we best cope with a rapidly changing world.

As natural systems are resilient, abundant and self-organising, I want to explore what we might learn by observing and emulating them. With nature as a teacher, we could make things in ways that don’t impact the environment anddo strengthen our resilience, and design systems that will allow our communities to flourish. For three years, I have lived and worked in Cloughjordan, a small village in Tipperary and the 2012 winners of the national Green Community award. It is also the location of the Ecovillage, Ireland’s largest eco-neighborhood, now home to over 50 families who have relocated in the hope of living a good life. The quality of life in Cloughjordan is indeed high. As a community, we have planted thousands of trees, have our own

farm and live in efficient eco-houses that are bright and heated by renewable energy. Although ecology is a focus of the community, it is definitely not our objective to get “back to nature”. We encourage the use of natural building materials, farm organically and aspire to reduce our environmental impact, but the Ecovillage project is more about community than saving the planet. The project’s original objective, building sustainable community, has been superseded by the idea of strengthening our community’s resilience. In their book, Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back, Andrew Zolli and Ann Marie Healy point out that “a new dialogue is emerging around a new idea, resilience: how to help vulnerable people, organizations and systems persist,

take a positive approach to health holistic health inspired by nature

We live in a culture where there is “a pill for every ill”. It is time we looked at a different approach to wellness, an approach that encourages lifestyle and nutritional change, encourages exercise and the management of stress and work/life balance, and the use of herbs as medicine alongside our existing biomedical model. 3 well-known Dublin Naturopaths tell us why the Naturopathic model plays an important role in an Integrative Healthcare approach. Naturopathy is a system of medicine based on some very specific tenets. Vis MediacatrixNaturae (There is a healing power in nature), prevention

is preferable to cure. The root cause of dysfunction is identified and treated, not the branches (symptoms). The whole person is treated, not the disease. Health is abundant vitality; it is not just the absence of disease. All disease starts with a disruption to the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, and health is a return to balance of these mechanisms. If a person is deficient, treatment is used to build them up, and if they are in excess (toxicity), they are detoxified. JOHN DORAN (M.P.S.I. Dip Herb. ND) For many years,Naturopaths have been looking at the individual’s constitution, looking at factors such as the 8 principles, heat/cold, yin/yang, excess/deficiency, as well as differential diagnosis. We

use many different tools and treatment modalities depending on the person’s individual constitution. Pharmaceutical companies are now acknowledging that drugs work only in about 25% of the people who take them. They now see the way forward as genetic testing to identify if the person is suitable for that particular medicine. This is a positive acknowledgement of each individual’s uniqueness and one that Naturopaths absolutely concur with. I worked as a pharmacist for many years. In 1992, I computerised the records of my pharmacy. For the fi rst time, I could see a person’s entire drug history going back years. I could see definite patterns such as if a child had one antibiotic, it was almost inevitably followed by a second or third. I realised that the system was not getting to the root of their problems. I became fascinated with Naturopathy because it really looks to treat the underlying problems, issues such as gut permeability, adrenal stress, nutrient absorption, liver health, and blood sugars, etc. are all looked at and addressed to start a healing process. I have seen fantastic results with this approach. Every day in my practice, I witness people becoming empowered to safely transform their health, with most able to reduce or completely stop their prescription medicines. I now look forward to my work every day. REBECCA REDMOND (B.A. Dip.Herb.ND) Naturopathy is an umbrella term that describes the blending of modern scientific knowledge with various traditional and natural forms of medicine, including Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Nutrition, Iridology, Flower essences, Tissue salts, lifestyle recommendations, and often bodywork such as Massage, Acupuncture and Reflexology. As a multifaceted form of health care, Naturopathy includes the holistic

philosophy of viewing a person as a whole, stimulation of the body’s innate healing power, treatment of underlying causes of disease, prevention of disease states and the promotion of balance. Patient education, empowerment and motivation are key goals of Naturopathy; the aim is to promote personal responsibility for health. Symptoms of disease (acute and chronic) are seen as warning signals of physiological, emotional, environmental, spiritual and lifestyle imbalances. Treatment is chosen to kick start the person’s own innate healing ability to overcome illness that has been triggered. It is incredibly rewarding to witness clients responding to treatment and making changes in how they are living in order to feel well again. Hippocrates, a Greek physician who lived 2,400 years ago, fi rst formulated the concept of “the healing power of nature”. As a Naturopath, I enjoy introducing people to the power of nature, so they too can be in awe. RITA-ANNE KEYES (Dip. Herb.ND.M.INA.M.IRH) I worked for many years in the financial services sector. I experienced high stress levels fi rst hand. When I trained with

“I enjoy introducing people to the power of nature, so they too can be in awe.” CNM to work as a Naturopath, I used what I learnt personally and then applied it professionally in practice. There was a huge positive transformation both physically and mentally. I am now a mother of two and really enjoy running a private practice and helping others achieve wellness, while raising my young family. To all those people who have high levels of stress in their lives, there is help out there. Naturopathy gave me the tools and insight to take charge of my own health. Typically, a consultation includes a review of the various systems of the body, medical history, and a lifestyle review, including exercise, sleeping habits, diet and levels of stress. This process alone usually raises the patient’s awareness of

what aspects of their life are not working optimally. People often know themselves what they need to change – but may not take the time to recognise it, or may need guidance on how to make the necessary changes. I design individually tailored plans for each client. This usually includes short-term elements (to address immediate issues) plus long-term elements, to suit the person’s constitution and to manage more chronic health problems. Treatment may include herbs, nutritional change, tissue salts, Bach flower remedies, stress management and work/life balance. It is the long-term elements and constitutional analysis which can empower people to take ownership of their health long-term.

One of the major benefits of fermentation is the preserving and storing of food without the need for refrigeration. The health benefits of probiotic cultures as a result of fermentation are widely lauded and many people love the flavour of these foods.

spring recipes By Tony Keogh, Head Chef at Cornucopia

positive food

The following two vegan recipes are very easy to recreate at home. Simplicity is the key here as we celebrate the delicate flavours of spring. The first recipe is very moreish and comforting. It is a marriage of vibrant spring greens with the textures of the departing winter. In this recipe, I have used regular wheat flour although rice flour would work just as well if you want to create a gluten-free alternative. In Cornucopia this spring, we are introducing a selection of delicious raw main courses in addition to our raw soups, salads and desserts which are so popular. The second recipe for courgette tagliatelle represents a small taste of what we will have on offer. Again, it is a simple recipe and it works very well. Other vegetables can be substituted for the raw vegetable pasta ribbons; I have had great success using carrots or daikon radish.

Potato boxty with tenderstem broccoli in a spring onion coconut sauce Serves 3

Meanwhile, make the sauce. Heat the mirin in a small saucepan. Allow it to reduce for a minute before adding the coconut milk. Reduce for a further 5 minutes before adding the spring onion tops. Blend to a velvety sauce. While this is happening, blanch the broccoli in some salted boiling water for no more than 2 minutes. Flood each plate with a ladle of sauce and top with two of the boxty and a third of the broccoli. Courgette tagliatelle with green olives, sundried tomatoes and basil cashew cream Serves 3-4 2 medium courgettes, rinsed, topped and tailed 40g sundried tomato, soaked in cold water overnight 40g of green olives, thinly sliced 200g cashew nuts, soaked in cold water overnight 200ml water 20g fresh basil 30ml lemon juice 3 cloves fresh garlic Seasoning Heaped dessertspoon of nutritional yeast (optional) Rocket to serve

Using a Y-shaped vegetable peeler, peel the courgettes into a large bowl until you begin to see seeds at the centre. At this stage, set the interior of the courgettes aside for something else. The courgette strips you now have in the bowl constitute the “tagliatelle. Finely chop the sundried tomatoes and add them to the courgettes, along with the olives. Strain the cashews and blend them with the fresh water, basil, lemon, garlic, seasoning and nutritional yeast. To blend, use a high speed blender, a food processor or an immersion blender (we use a vitamix in the restaurant). Blend the mixture until a velvety sauce is achieved. If the sauce is still a little grainy, it can be put through a fine sieve. Fold the sauce through the courgette ribbons. Adjust the seasoning and serve immediately, topped with some fresh rocket leaves. Enjoy!

400g grated potato 40g sunflower oil 60g plain flour Juice of half a lemon 1 bunch of spring onion tops and bottoms, finely chopped Seasoning Oil for frying Sauce: 50ml mirin (sweet Japanese rice wine used in cooking) 300ml coconut milk Seasoning 150g tender stem broccoli

Firstly, grate the potato. Add the salt and lemon and give the mixture a good squeeze. Some liquid will escape. Do not discard as this starchy liquid will help to bind all the other ingredients. Add the flour, oil, spring onion bottoms and seasoning. Shape the mixture into patties; you should get about 6 from this quantity. Heat some oil in a large frying pan or skillet. When it’s sizzling, lower the heat to medium and add the patties. Fry the patties for about 5 minutes on each side.

a new day, a new you

By Charles Virtue

Breathe out fear, breathe in love One of the major goals of spirituality is to maintain a higher energy regardless of our current life situation. Every moment is a lesson, every moment is an opportunity to learn, and if we can maintain the discipline to remember and practice this, our power to help others and ourselves will increase every day. It is important that we maintain the faith that every situation has a purpose. We are the only true and reliable sources of happiness and well-being for ourselves. While others can

contribute, we must eventually learn to find harmony in self-reliance. The happier you are, the greater your ability will be to help bring joy to others. Let’s turn desire into prayer, lack into lessons and fear into love. Let’s affirm that every aspect of our lives in this moment has divine meaning. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and thank God for the guidance you have received, and allow yourself to surrender to the knowledge that this guidance will continue every

day and that it will become clearer the more you can release control over every moment. Breathe out your fears, breathe out the limiting thoughts, and breathe in peace, love and trust. Know that your ability to bring joy is not limited to other people’s lives – you have the same power to create happiness for yourself, if you give yourself permission and allow the angels to guide you. charlesvirtue.com

wings of light By Stewart Pearce

Angels in Egypt Working as an Angel Medium and Sound Healer means that during the unique events of unfolding 2012, I often heard the voice of the Angels, promising their deeper support in our lives. Their purpose is to enchant us with their love, to heal us with their balm, to inform us through the wisdom of our eternal souls. The pledge is to use their wings of light to create a wind of change, so that the tree of life be shaken, awakening us from our perch of indifference – so that our souls and hearts be made as new. The Angels promise was that they would give literal signs of their presence, through visible assignations with us. The transcendence of December 2012 was palpable for all of us, where the consciousness of every living being on Mother Earth had the potential to move to a higher octave. This was a time of celebration, for within unity consciousness and unconditional love, we feel the presence of the Angels warming our hearts and souls. Facilitating a retreat in Egypt during December meant visiting the famous Star Temples of the Nile, which vibrated with such supernal light, those who took part were all moved to a fifth dimensional reality. The high-octane experiences we had on a daily basis were captured by our photography, through which we see the palpable evidence of the Angels promise. Orbs literally rain through the atmosphere of each Temple, encouraging us, through their caress, to experience other spiritual phenomena such as increased intuition, the gift of manifestation and synchronicity. www.thealchemyofvoice.com www.theangelsofatlantis.com

sound healing miracles By Maan Kantar

The power of soothing sound

The door knocks and in comes a lady with a 3 year old child who seems angry. She explains to me that her child is aggressive and has bitten another child, and she feels desperate about this constant issue. Indeed, while she is explaining things, the child starts screaming and shouting in a violent way. I gently lift him off the ground and lay him on my table. I choose a heart bowl to play - within seconds he calms down and within minutes he falls asleep. The mother is surprised, and the power of sound always amazes me. Everyone knows that our body is made mostly of water, thus the vibration of sound travels to every part like a rippling wave, soothing the nervous system and making each cell vibrate to release any blockages and be energised. Welcome to Connecting Within!

We set up our Sound Healing Academy around 3 years ago after having worked with sound since the year 2000. And what a journey it has been. We started working discretely on a 1-to-1 basis, growing steadily by word of mouth, but the growing demand meant sharing the knowledge and helping it to spread. At our Sound Healing Academy, we combine our knowledge of Tibetan Singing Bowls with the practice of Advanced Emotional, Physical and Spiritual work. As such, our system is unique, and has been successful in helping many people facing a wide range of physical and mental challenges. www.connectingwithin.info

a side order of intimacy please By Mark & Karen Sutton

Intimate moments Our lives have become focused on achieving: the top rung on the ladder, that platinum card, that 400 horsepower purring in the driveway, that sexy pair of ManoloBlahniks; and yes, achieving that orgasm; multiple ones. Isn’t that what Cosmo tells us to do? …In as short a time period as possible, because after all, we need to get some sleep to work on those abs at 5 in the morning. But how much intimacy have you savoured lately; with your partner; with yourself? Intimacy is the glue that binds the building blocks of our relationships. It creates strength and security, deepens love and compassion. Take time to cultivate intimacy by creating a space with your partner, then, sitting opposite each other, fall into gentle eye-gazing. Begin to breathe in sync with each other, strip away the masks, be bare, open and reconnect heart to heart. In Tantra, awareness is the key to intimacy. Tantra says: “Stop, slow down. Breathe a little deeper, a little slower than you are right now.” The deeper you breathe, the more your body relaxes. The more you relax, the deeper you are able to breathe. In that moment, you feel more, become more aware and you move away from achieving and focus more on being. You become

intimate with those you love, with the stranger passing in the street, with your morning cup of tea. In the banquet of all that Tantra offers, intimacy expands and sexuality awakens. www.tantraawakenings.org www.life-without-limits.co

jin shin jyutsu – the art of living By Majella Delaney

Ancient art, timeless healing Jin Shin Jyutsu physio-philosophy is an ancient art of harmonising life energy in the body. Born of innate wisdom and passed down from generation to generation, the art had fallen into obscurity, when it was revived in the early 1900’s by Master Jiro Murai in Japan. After clearing himself of a terminal illness, Master Murai devoted the rest of his life to the research and development of Jin Shin Jyutsu, studying t he Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things) written in 712 A.D. and carrying out numerous experiments. Mary Burmeister, a student of Master Murai’s, began teaching the Art in America and the Western world in the 1960’s. Jin Shin Jyutsu uses 26 Safety Energy Locks which are located along the energy pathways that feed life into our bodies. When one or more of the

paths becomes blocked, the resulting stagnation can disrupt the local area, and if left untreated can eventually cause discomfort, pain or illness in the entire body. Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied as self-help and also by a trained practitioner. A session lasts about an hour. The client remains clothed. The practitioner places his hands on the client’s Safety Energy Locks in various combinations to harmonise the energy flow paths and restore balance to mind, body and spirit. The Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu is simple yet powerful, enabling us to know and help ourselves and others. vitality in life By Paul Congdon

Invest in the wellness of your body In the heart of Dun Laoghaire, near my home, I was blessed to have stumbled upon a Korean master, Master Hyun, who has 20 years experience in health matters. He is a wealth of knowledge and looks eternally youthful. Along with Master Soo, our own home-grown Irish master, they offer both CheonSoo and HAMT. CheonSoo is a vital energy treatment using acupressure on different points in the body, combined with the powerful sound of the breath of the practitioner. When I receive a treatment, I feel the energy flow in my body increase, my digestion gets a thorough tune up and I leave feeling buzzed up and ready for action. HAMT (Hand Acupressure Magnetic Therapy) is a one-day course they run which empowers the individual to look after their own health. Through

a series of kinesiology tests, they determine your energy constitution from a Korean perspective and then, using a special instrument made by Master Hyun called a Hamtic, you are shown a series of acupressure points on your fingers which can greatly improve your health. The hamtic contains positive and negative magnets. The positive magnet recharges the points that need it, and the negative magnet acts as a detox. In Ireland, the variety of alternative treatments available has grown hugely in the last number of years. All are valid, so keep an eye in your local area, you may have a Korean master knocking around, or an Irish one for that matter. Master your own health and give your body the investment it deserves. vitalityinlife.org

StarFuel Smoothie Scoops

StarFuel

46 superfood boosting lifestyle By Sarah Sylvester

If you can’t find it, make it Modern living can wear us down, so I went looking for a simple way to boost my immune system and balance my stressed out body and mind. I decided to see what would happen if I ate highly nutritious superfoods everyday. Would I feel more energized? Would I view the world in a different way? The answer was a resounding YES. I felt stronger, healthier and my brain chemistry was more balanced. In short, I felt more fulfilled. Then I wondered how I could conveniently get these nourishing foods into my everyday diet without breaking the bank. I wanted a product in a smaller quantity that I wouldn’t leave at home gathering dust on my shelf; and when

“I decided to see what would happen if I ate highly nutritious superfoods everyday.” I looked, it didn’t exist. So I created Star Fuel - a 7-day mix of superfoods (not just greens) that comes in a pouch with a convenient wooden spoon. It’s something small I keep in my bag and can use any time or place. The powdered mix can be added to bottled smoothies or juices as part of a healthy diet. These days, I use StarFuel at work when I am feeling a bit flat or before I go out in the evenings to restore my energy. It’s very useful at the gym or yoga class and boosts my immune system if I’m running low. I designed StarFuel so that it’s as affordable and convenient as possible, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of nutrient rich superfoods. www.starfuelhealth.com

Sadly one of our founders passed away this year, and although we are tinged with sadness, the support and kindness of everyone here created something more than can ever be expressed. Our clients, our students, our society, we all have challenges to face, but the Dublin Holistic Centre is very lucky to be thriving. The buzz of South William Street bodes well for us, the wide selection of therapists bodes well for us, the standard of our teachers bodes well for us, but in truth: we are worth more as a whole than the sum of our parts. As a practitioner, you choose this field because you care, because you want to help, and when you multiply that by 50, it is so much more than just a workplace. This year we shared empathy, hugs, kind words, patience, grief and hardship. We became friends. Of course we must still be accountable, but if you can become more than money, become more than marketing… The DHC works because we became more than just a business. www.dublinholisticcentre.com

When humans migrated to Ireland and settled here, the time of the Tuatha De Dannan had come to an end. Fairy moved to the other world, beyond the veil, the land between. In Ireland, we are very connected to this energy of the land and to the fairies, even if it is often unconscious. The fairy energy in Ireland is very strong, and many people visiting here have commented on how connected they feel here and how it’s different from anywhere else they have been. When visiting another country, the one thing I notice on touch down is that the vibrancy is different. I have always felt it most here in Ireland. Maybe you have felt it too. Around the world, in myths and legends about the fairies, they are often portrayed as mischievous, but in all my work with them, I have found them to be playful in their communication and assertive in their reproval. You can connect with them through meditation or going to places where their energy is strongest, such as fairy rings or woodlands. When I first started receiving the

5 tips for optimum health By Dr Zayd Ratansi

Easy-to-follow life-changing advice Have you ever wondered why some people heal quicker than others, from physical cuts and wounds to illnesses like colds and flu? The body knows how to heal. Give it what it needs and watch the body do its job. Here are 5 ways that you can improve your own body’s healing ability: 1 Make sure you get enough rest and sleep. This is the time that your body heals thanks to the parasympathetic nervous system (an automatic response) which facilitates repair and regeneration. 2 Try to cut down on deep fried foods and refined/processed foods. These foods cause significant stress on your body. Instead, look for more fruits and vegetables. Keep hydrated and focus on the good fats and essential amino acids that are critical nutritional factors for optimal healing. 3 Work on your circulatory pathway and keep the blood pumping. Proper blood flow is absolutely critical to allow

your body to heal and repair. 4 Sweat and clean your body. It has long been known that sweating can help maintain good health, but now, thanks to sweat analysis studies, science has shown that the body can eliminate large quantities of dangerous environmental chemicals. Clean them out and let your body focus on more

important issues like function, repair, growth, and regeneration. 5 Smile and be happy. Studies have confirmed that the mind has a powerful effect on the body, the nervous system, and the immune system. Start now and change the way you feel. www.wellnesswithoutlimits.com

Well-being for your heart A whole new health revolution is being led by ReviveQ10+ - a cardiovascular nutrigenomic health food supplement which brings together a unique combination of nutrients in a food supplement designed for cardiovascular well-being. The effective use of the right nutrients can be a benefit to young and old alike - from the health-challenged to super-fit sportspeople who can benefit from enhanced times and greater endurance. Speaking at a recent Anti-Ageing conference in London, leading vascular surgeon, Mr Sherif Sultan said: “The virtues of Coenzyme Q10 and L-Arginine are well-proven, and research into their effectiveness has earned Nobel prizes for the leading researchers in this field.” Tracy Piggott says: “As a television presenter, there are times of high stress levels and a need to be very much ‘on the ball.’ I have always been interested in health and well-being, and

have tried many things over the years. Since taking ReviveQ10+, my coping abilities are far better, I can retain more information, and I suffer far less from the stress I formerly experienced. I put that down to the well-being factor of taking ReviveQ10+ and the effect of its active ingredients, especially the CQ10. As the cold weather has come in, I find that I am not feeling the cold as much and still have plenty of drive in me, which often disappears in the winter when I have suffered somewhat with feeling low and negative during those months. I also feel that I generally look healthier and better than before, which helps with confidence when appearing in public.” www.reviveq10plus.com

tri-vortex By Jessica Crowley

Energise yourself

For the very first time, Tri-Vortex™ natural healing technology is coming to Ireland. Tri-Vortex™ treated products can have wonderfully beneficial applications in various areas of our well-being, such as proper hydration, natural pain relief, and reduction of sideeffects from cell phones and electronic devices. Tri-Vortex™ technology combines 20 years of research in sacred geometry, sound and light, and involves a diverse combination of processes, where products are treated in special

chambers for 24 hours and longer. This powerful system uses bio-mimicry to imprint objects with the harmonic energy patterns of hydrogen, oxygen and gold. Objects treated by Tri-Vortex™ technology become useful as healing tools and energisers, and can be used to structure water. The products are designed to offer a number of simple applications and uses. For example, in order to treat water, simply place a glass of water on a Tri-Vortex™ treated water disc for 3 minutes. The molecular structure of the fluid becomes organised and coherent, thereby promoting maximum and rapid absorption into our cells. Alternatively, pendants and bangles can be worn to induce the beneficial effects of natural energy patterns into the body, aiding in pain relief, energy balance and general well-being. Complementary therapists may also find uses for Tri-Vortex™ treated products in enhancing their practices, especially through the use of the Tri-Vortex™ Green Laser which can be used to balance energy, stimulate acupoints or in biofeedback therapy, among many other uses. www.trivortex.ie

loves lost By James Van Praagh

Get to know love a little better Love defines who we are and everything in life. It is the glue which holds our Universe together or tears it apart. Being the strongest emotional force we know as human beings, it is important we put aside time each day to recognise and celebrate its existence. Beyond the “Universal” communal love, the one which most of us relate to, is a very personal love. Personalised love, to me, is an intimate love with which two people are willing to share the most inner part of themselves and expose their souls. We first must appreciate who we are. If we have no basic relationship with ourselves, then our hope for finding love in someone else is little to none. Love, by its very nature, is sensitive, and one must be ready to open their heart to new

“For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.” ~ Carl Sagan situations in life, not step away from them. Perhaps, in just acknowledging yourself, you have acknowledged love. We must start somewhere. When we lose a person we love, we must be willing to have some faith, believe in ourselves and know that we are worthy of being found. The energy of love we felt is always there sitting in our hearts. When our grief work is complete and the healing has happened and we become more present, we all can feel the energy of love from the Spirit World. The communal love is the gateway for each of us to open our hearts to people living on the earth and also feeling our loved ones lost. living your own life By Derek O’Neill

Seeing the forces at work in your life Though you might go about your life thinking you’re steering the controls, chances are there are other forces – that are not about who you really are, and can be – that are shaping your existence. During this month’s inspirational talk at Creacon Lodge Wellness Centre, I talked about empowering yourself so you can start living your own life. We are driven by emotions, beliefs and needs. All three of these elements must be looked at and understood. What are the emotions behind your actions? What’s driving them? What are your beliefs and how do you come to them? Is your mind open to new beliefs if the old ones reveal that change is necessary? What are your needs and are you too attached to chasing things you don’t really require in order to be happy? The state of your mind determines your reality. I talked about the effect of negative thoughts, heightened emotion and “learned helplessness”. When you begin to live your own life, you leave behind the voices from your past that defined you. When you can’t move forward, there is conflict within you. Working through that conflict is the first step. The goal is to live “at cause”, which is a state of empowered belief. It’s when we live “at effect” that we are in a victim role which cuts us down and takes our power away. Living your own life and knowing how to get there is essential for a happy, harmonious and productive future for all of us! www.creaconretreats.com
