positively newsworthy GOOD NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. POSITIVELIFE.IE

1 Woman-centred Legislation REDUCING PERIOD POVERTY. by Alison McEvoy Women are returning to power. You will find women of high ranking positions across various working arenas and the blessed results are now trickling into societies at large. Take our northerly neighbour, Scotland; Scottish local authorities and councils have launched a project which aims to end what they term ‘period poverty’. Period poverty, on the one hand, is a fact. It points to the baffling truth that many so-called ‘firstworld’ women simply do not have the money to dish out on expensive sanitation products each month. On the other hand, period poverty is a mindset. Certain stories have come to light in the wake of this initiative from women in low-income families. Many spend the household’s money on the needs of the family while their own personal sanitation comes out last, if it makes an appearance at all, on the priorities list. Now, authorities, councils and the government are talking about periods! Talking about the right of all women to ‘dignity’ in the form of free and easy access to this ‘non-luxury item’.

“...authorities, councils and the government are talking about periods!”

6

Free sanitary pads and tampons are being made available in libraries, leisure centres, schools, colleges and universities in pockets of the country. Watch this space, as it is proposed that this initiative will soon make its way into legislation as a ‘universal system of free access to period products’ for everyone in Scotland. And we are only a stone’s throw away...

2O zone Hope PRESERVING THE PLANET’S PROTECTIVE LAYER by Aisling Cronin

In a world so often beset by negative environmental news, glimmers of hope abound. Just over three decades ago, scientists were sounding alarm bells over the perilous state of the ozone layer, which was suffering severe degradation due to harmful manmade aerosol chemicals being released into the atmosphere. The warnings led to the signing in 1987 of the Montreal Protocol, which committed nations to drastically limiting the production of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons, which had commonly been used in aerosols and refrigerators. Now, the UN’s most recent assessment of the ozone layer suggests that its upper layer in the northern hemisphere will make a full recovery by 2030, and in the southern hemisphere by 2060 – a remarkable turnaround that indicates exactly what is possible with global action. As well as the clear environmental benefits, the UN estimates that up to 2m cases of

skin cancer could be avoided each year as a result. Measures that were taken to repair the damage will also have a beneficial effect on climate change, as some of the gases that caused the ozone layer to thin had also been contributing to warming the atmosphere. Experts believe that phasing them out could avoid as much as 0.5C (0.9F) of warming this century. “We can be proud of how we have protected the ozone layer,” said Tina Birmpili, executive secretary of the UN’s Ozone Secretariat. “But we must also focus on what more we can do to reduce global warming.”

3 Girl Power HOW ONE LITTLE GIRL FOUND FAITH TO FIGHT FIRE. by Aisling Cronin

A four-year-old aspiring firefighter named Esme Summers, from London, was thrilled to receive multiple messages of support from female firefighters, having previously believed that only men could sign up. It all began when her mother, Hannah Summers, put out an appeal on Twitter, asking whether there were any books or videos featuring firefighters who were women. She explained: “My four-year-old came home yesterday saying she wished she was a boy so she could be a fireman. When I said ‘girls can be firefighters too’, she said, ‘but I’ve seen in books they are all boys and I don’t want to be the only girl’.” This prompted female firefighters across the country to post videos and pictures of themselves on Twitter, proving to Esme that they existed. Among the first to reply was West Midlands Fire Service

“We can be proud of how we have protected the ozone layer.”

(WMFS) with a video carrying messages from serving female firefighters. They tweeted: “Esme, lots of our firefighters are girls and boys - some of them want to say hello to you!” It was not long before other firefighting organisations replied. London Fire Brigade stationed in Ealing tweeted: “We are London firefighters and we are girls. Hope we can meet you one day?” Another female firefighter named Rebecca Rowe said: “I’m also a firefighter in the London Fire Brigade. Your daughter can be anything she wants. Don’t let gender stand in the way.” Hannah later tweeted, “Esme firmly believes she can be a firefighter.” Go for it, Esme!

A BOON FOR GIVER AND RECEIVER. by Alison McEvoy Gathered round the desk at work - a holistic haven inhabited mostly by women - we review our week. We find words to share the ups and downs, the struggles and triumphs, and any super-woman moments that illuminated our week. I love listening to the stories, mundane and sublime, that pepper our stolen moments of chat among the gentle bustle of the centre.

This week one story stood out. Anna was driving home after a long day and noticed a young woman, standing by her car at the side of the road, crying and distraught for no obvious reason. Anna pulled over and approached the woman who told her, through chesty sobs, that she had hit a cat. Alternating between soothing the young woman and giving reiki to the cat, Anna noticed that cat was still breathing. Being a practical-minded Goddess, she swooped them both off to the vet there and then.

2A nimal Caring THE HONOUR OF WORKING WITH WILDLIFE. by Aisling Cronin

8

Last August, I started volunteering with Kildare Animal Foundation (KAF)’s Wildlife Unit– I was inspired by the incredible dedication of a close friend who had been a regular volunteer there for several months – and it has proven to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Working with ill, injured or orphaned wild animals can be very difficult at times – no doubt about it – but every single time I walk through the gates, I feel privileged just to be there, helping them in whatever way I can. Every animal who arrives into KAF is given the highest possible chance of recovering from whatever affliction has caused them to end up there. We provide the very best care we can, but ultimately, not every animal that passes through our gates will make it. This is something I have had to try and accept.

As Anna had stood there with the woman, two other women also felt the call to stop at the side of the road and gathered to see if they could help. Indeed, the kindnesseffect has a tendency to snowball in this way. When a person sees another perform an act of kindness, witnessing the level of upliftment and compassion it creates, they are impelled to do the same - to help the next person they see; whether it’s letting the person in front of you know that their bag is open, or holding a door for a the person coming behind you. The energy it creates, for both giver and receiver, is well worth the effort. Moreover, when you need a hand, chances are someone will be there on the lookout for you!

“There is nothing better than seeing a wild animal released: healthy, strong, and ready to resume living out their lives.” I’ll never be able to fully desensitise myself to the sadder cases, but luckily, our success stories are plentiful, and they fill me with enormous joy and give me the will to keep going. There is nothing better than seeing a wild animal released after a successful period of rehabilitation: healthy, strong, and ready to resume living out their lives exactly as nature intended. One animal who has become very dear to my heart is a red squirrel named Bláthnaid: a stunning, curious, energetic young girl who has gone from strength to strength since she first arrived. Have you ever seen such a beautiful face?

spirituality & the city THE MILK OF HUMAN KINDNESS Andrea Hayes After I had my daughter Skykar Grace, my sisters Lavinia and Maria flew over from the UK, spent the day cooking and filled my freezer with food. At my Anamcharadas Jesuit training course a while later, I told my fellow students that this was the best gift ever anyone could give a new mum. Little did I know that one of my student friends Maggie was a trained chef: she called up a week later with enough food to feed both me – a vegetarian – and David – a meat lover! It was such a kind gesture and I was enormously impressed and grateful. When we embrace kindness – through a warm smile, a joyful good morning, silently blessing the food you eat or expressing gratitude to the person serving you – we are allowing the highest level of our awareness to permeate every experience. Being kind is totally free, but the rewards can be priceless. Andrea Hayes is the best selling author of Mind, Body, Soul Journal.

As a Reiki Practitioner, when I hear the word ‘kindness’, it goes straight to my heart and puts a smile on my face. Kindness is a gift of Love, whether it is shown to another person, an animal or any other living thing. Kindness opens our hearts to Love, and to living in the moment. On the 14th of August 2016, my mum died and my aunt Cheryl came over from Birmingham. With her kindness, she helped my family to deal with the death of my mum. Then an amazing Reiki Master and teacher named Sinead Lynch did a soul reading for me and told me I was meant to do Reiki. She put me on my current path: her kindness impacted so strongly on me, and she changed my life. Share a bit of kindness and you will feel amazing! It’s so easy. Love and light and of course smiles, Mark.

For me, a true act of kindness is given without condition or expectation. My Mum’s partner, Mark, received what could at best be described as a frosty reception from most family members when he came into our lives, but on reflection, I am in awe of his strength, resilience and open mindedness. Nearly four years ago, we lost my Grandad, who in every emotional sense was a father to me. In the days leading up to the funeral, I was a mess. The day beforehand, I realised that I needed to get my act together and make myself presentable. Mark touched my heart deeply by arranging to pay for Mum and I to have our hair done before the funeral. He knew that it would help us to feel a little better during a time of deep sadness. Even though Mark had not received warmth and generosity from us, he gave so freely with no expectation or judgement. This is true kindness. wheeliemomma.com

Martin McNicholl Kindness, for me, is our natural inclination as humans. We are all born with an innate joy in serving and loving our fellow neighbours. Kindness is a gentleness and allowing of the wisdom of the heart to guide our interactions with others. Kindness doesn’t have to be a grand thing that is recognised or applauded: a simple smile or word of encouragement to someone who doesn’t normally receive it can be life changing. I encourage people in my groups to do ‘secret’ random acts of kindness. So you can leave little random notes or gifts in public places, with a loving message. Someone will find them and it may be exactly what they need to hear in that moment. You can get creative and have fun with it – just enjoy knowing that you may make someone’s day and never even meet them or know about it. That’s true kindness for me.

11

Cliona Fitzgerald Kindness is the essence and the energetic expression of love in its purest state. One of my more prominent memories of kindness is a brief period of time I spent in the care of the dedicated team at Pieta House almost three years ago. From the first point of contact made by my husband on the phone, to the sessions I sat through, processing deeply suppressed emotions, the level of compassion and love that was held for us both throughout the experience was life-altering. This was the first time I truly understood the concept of ‘holding space’ for someone. Uninterrupted listening and conscious, mindful language choices were combined with a soothing and empathetic tone. The tissues handed out, the cups of tea offered and the eye contact throughout, along with comprehending nods when each raw emotion was expressed and released in a stream of messy hot tears, quite literally saved my life. I experienced sheer human-to-human love, support and kindness.

Niall Ó Murchú Kindness is a word I hear a lot: “We should be kind to others” or “We should be kind to ourselves.” But, for a long time I struggled to understand what it really meant. Then, one day, someone explained it like this: “the word comes from the root ‘kin’, meaning family. So, it means treating people like family.” That made sense to me. I try to treat everyone I meet with kindness and respect, even the people I don’t like. I don’t always succeed, but I try. The small acts of kindness I experience every day move me. Just yesterday, an old person asked how I was doing. A child offered me one of their sweets. A man held the door open for me. Everyday acts of kindness remind me of our inherent goodness. We are, after all, one big family. Niall is a Wim Hof Method instructor: breathewithniall.com

POSITIVE PARENTING

new life

old memories

RELEASE AND RENEW THIS SPRINGTIME. by Anna Cole The sun is slowly climbing higher in the sky and spring is on its way amidst the cold days, bringing hopes of renewal and rebirth. The crocuses and daffodils lying dormant in the earth throughout the winter, remind me of one of the most profound things that I have learnt from my practice as a Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor: the stored and long-term nature of implicit memories held in the ‘limbic brain’. The limbic brain is the large social and emotional centre of the brain, the seat of our ‘gut reactions’ which holds memories from when we are in utero. This part of the brain is ‘online’ from when we are newborn, in contrast to the prefrontal cortex which is still developing until we are around 24 years old. As parents, we can’t always know what implicit memories are living in us, or our children, but we can find ways to release old memories and create room for new stories by remaining connected and listening. When my daughter was born I struggled with a long, four day labour. Eventually she was born, not in the idyllic home-birth setting of my dreams but in a birthing room in our local hospital. To aspirate her lungs in case of meconium after possible in utero distress, soon after her birth the doctor on duty gently inserted a small tube down her throat. It was over in seconds, and she did not seem distressed at the time. Some years later, my daughter, who was four years old at the time, awoke in a bad mood. I’d been told once, by a wise midwife, that waking from sleep can often be a time when birth memories surface for a baby or young child. I’d wanted a bit more of a lie-in, but at 5.45am she was up and raring to go and not taking ‘no’ for

an answer. My suggestion of a lie-in and for me to read her a favourite book wasn’t right, the breakfast cereal wasn’t right and nothing I offered her to eat for breakfast as an alternative, was right. Nothing was right. She got into an uncharacteristic and big upset and angrily moved off to the couch where she lay down under a big red blanket and hid. I calmly followed, stayed close and paid warm attention. She remained angry and upset and I gently moved the blanket to see her face. She got more upset and told me to leave but when I backed off she told me to stay - and then she started to choke. There was nothing blocking her mouth or throat, she’d refused to eat any cereal and she’d not been sick, but she was making choking noises and coughing and gasping. Intuitively, and because of what I’d learnt about the longevity of implicit memory in the limbic brain, I moved close and let her know I was there, that she was safe, that she could breathe.

“may we find relief from buried emotions and implicit memories and...Let the sun shine in!” It seemed to me that she was working through some big feelings, which had come apparently from nowhere. I can’t know for sure that she was releasing feelings from preverbal memories of her birth, and that slender tube pushed down her throat while she lay vulnerable and new born, but I felt something significant

was being worked on and released in that upset. As the spring days grow longer and lighter, I wish this for all parents, and their children: may we find relief from buried emotions and implicit memories and enjoy the full flowering of this season of our lives. Let the sun shine in! Anna Cole, PhD is a researcher, writer and certified Instructor with Hand in Hand Parenting. POSITI V E AT TR ACTION

the feminine /masculine TIME TO BALANCE. by Judith McAdam Mirroring this wonderful season of spring, International Women’s Day highlights and celebrates the blossoming of women and women’s rights around the globe. For centuries, the equilibrium between women and men has been damaged. This was predominantly caused by an egocentric, patriarchal image of God. Rather, where the divine and human meet is neither female nor male. A collective human maturity requires a move towards who we really are as individuals, first. No matter what gender, sexual orientation,

“the Divine feminine, through her ‘suffering transformed’,... becomes a powerful catalyst for healing and growth in the world.”

14

religion or race you are, this is all about You and who You really are as an energetic being. You are the point where the Divine and human meet, and, just as every spring flower grows in its own individual way, infinite intelligence expresses itself uniquely through you. This powerful Universal energy that I call Source, conveys itself through your talents and gifts. It discloses itself through your physical appearance and the colour of your skin, your gender and sexual orientation. This magnificent energy reveals itself in the circumstances of your conception, through what I call the Mysticism of Co-creation. It is present in every aspect of your life. You are a magnificent creation and you have the ability to co-create and do powerful things through this wonderful energy made manifest in you. A distorted androcentric, male centred image of God has eclipsed our ability to experience ourselves in all our magnificence. As a woman born in the late 1960s, I know what inequality feels like. Many women carry these scars through learned behavioural patterns, in their thoughts and in their actions, while for others, generations of conditioning has become so ingrained that it is part of their lives and they don’t even notice it. However, we can create a twist in the outcome of this tale. Instead of women using their new-found power in service of retribution, inflicting pain on, or belittling the male creation, alchemy can occur. Women have the opportunity to see the bigger picture and to shine a brighter light into the world. When the Divine feminine, through her ‘suffering transformed’, releases that suppressed inner beauty and strength, allowing it to shine in her own uniquely feminine way, she becomes a powerful catalyst for healing and growth in the world.

You see, men have suffered at the hands of the patriarchy too. Rigid gender norms reinforced over centuries have left many men unable to express themselves and their feelings. Instead they suppress their emotions, feeling the need to be dominant or aggressive and driven to prove their masculinity. The negative effects of the patriarchy on men aren’t solely emotional. They are physical too, encouraging violence against women and not forgetting many men themselves have suffered abuse silently. In effect, men have lost out on so much too, though in a completely different way. Women, individually and collectively, have the ability to holistically restore the equilibrium between the female and male creation. Mary Robinson, the first female president of Ireland, sums it up beautifully and although she speaks of Climate Change and Mother Earth, her words ring true for all that is female in this world: “In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called upon to switch to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. We have arrived at that time. And we must reach for that higher ground.” We, as women, must reach not only for higher ground to support the planet we live on, but also for the men we share this planet with. The Yin and the Yang; complementary, interconnected and interdependent. With much love, Jx

beliefs about

money RELEASE SUBCONSCIOUS SELF-SABOTAGE. by Amanda Collins

“Every time you confront negative patterns or old beliefs which no longer serve you, you are making a breakthrough and the universe will meet you.” When I was a teenager, in order for me to fit in with the crowd I was hanging around with, I had to pretend that I did not have as much abundance in my life as I did. I felt shame and guilt for my good fortune, so I pretended not to go to the good school that I did and hid the truth that my family had as much money as they did. By the time I reached my early thirties, I was ready to change. I meditated and journalled about my beliefs around money and realised that I was still carrying this shame-filled, negative energy. I could not believe, after so many years, I was still holding on to these unconscious beliefs. Just becoming aware of these shame-based beliefs, shifted them. I felt compassion for my teenage-self for dimming my light back then. At that moment, I released the old energy and created a new paradigm for myself. Having my own family has also helped me to shift that energy. In the past, just having enough to cover expenses was fine. However, now that I have children

I give myself permission to play a bigger role and have unlimited potential. And the universe has met me right there. Money is just another form of energy, and because giving and receiving are equally important, holding onto money for reasons such as fear of losing it, blocks the inflow as well as the outflow. Every time you confront negative patterns or old beliefs which no longer serve you, you are making a breakthrough and the universe will meet you. When you become conscious of any difficult area of your life - be it eating, your environment, how you speak, think, or play out old stories - you shine a light on an unconscious belief and that light takes away its dark power. Perhaps your money blocks were created in childhood when you heard messages from parents, teachers, friends, or the larger society which shaped your unconscious beliefs and your feelings about what you deserve.

Examining Your Beliefs As the unconscious mind is so powerful, you will need to dig deep to discover the unconscious beliefs which are held there. Listen to your thoughts, and to what you say, such as: • Money doesn’t grow on trees. • They are filthy rich. • Who am I to earn this much money? • This is too much. • Earning money is hard work. • I’m always broke. • Money is evil. • I’m bad with money. • I’m afraid of money.

• Too much money will kill the harmony of relationships. • Too much money invites envy.

by giving thanks as you pay a bill, that you have the water, electricity, or whatever else your money buys. Cultivate thanks also that you have the abundance to pay for it.

These are just illusions in your unconscious mind and you have the power to change them, especially when you discover your self-sabotaging fears about money and success. To replace these negative illusions, you might meditate on these realities instead: • There is enough in the world for everyone to have enough. • There is no such thing as competition, I can let go of scarcity mentality.

Together, let us create a beautiful union between mindfulness and our money-stories to raise consciousness for ourselves, our planet and our next generation.

Allow yourself to become more aware when you talk about money, pay for things, and receive money. How do you feel, physically, emotionally and mentally? See if you can cultivate an attitude of gratitude

• Money and spirituality co-exist in harmony.

Affirmations are amazing. Find a couple that you love and that speak to your heart and soul. Write them on your bathroom mirror and say them out loud 8 times a day, ones such as:

• I am sensible with money and manage it wisely. • I allow my income to constantly expand and I always live in comfort and joy They will feel aligned for as long as you need them. Then, perhaps find others to raise your consciousness even more.

POSITIVE PE ACE

spring clean

your mind HOW A MIND DETOX CAN DELIVER PEACE. by Sandy Newbigging “Where is my baby? Is there something wrong?” my tired mum asked a nurse, hours after giving birth to me. “You said you’d bring him back for feeding hours ago, but nobody’s brought him, I’m worried that he must be hungry by now.” This was my welcome to the world: being taken from my mum to spend hours alone without care and food. It didn’t matter that it was an innocent oversight by the hospital staff. I didn’t know that then. Without knowing the reality of the situation, I continued my life unaware of the event ever happening, along with the toxic belief that had been created that day. Subsequently, I had no idea that the event and belief had been screwing with my life, from behind the scenes, for several years. It wasn’t until I did a Mind Detox (over three decades later) that the ramifications of being left alone after my birth were finally revealed and resolved. I’ve since learned that even if we begin life with no spoken words, we are able to feel what’s going on from before our first breath. Later in life, we learn to use words to convey how we feel – but feelings are fuelling the formation of our beliefs from the get-go. As the name suggests, Mind Detox is a tool for letting go of anything toxic that is preventing you from being at your best. I believe we are born with brilliance, but if we are holding on to unresolved stuff from the past, it is harder to engage our natural states of inner peace and immense potential. Peace with the past is possible. I know this from successfully Mind Detoxing hundreds of people.

18

Are we looking through a mental lens that is clouded by toxic assumptions, beliefs or attitudes? If so, we lack pure perception. Our perceptions are pure when we see the entirety of reality, as it actually is, rather than seeing a falsified, edited version of reality, based upon our assumptions, beliefs and attitudes. Being at peace with the past requires us to return to the truth of reality, where resolution is waiting for us. Until we do this, our life is defined and determined by a series of fictitious fantasies, imagined by our mind, which are only a relative reality (similar to a dream or convincing story). If truth and the prize of peace is what we want, we must be willing to question our assumptions and challenge our beliefs stemming from what we think happened. We need to instead see what really went on.

“Being at peace with the past requires us to return to the truth of reality.”

Here are three introductory Mind Detox questions to ask yourself now: • Are my facts about what happened actually fictions? • Is the real problem my perceptions of the past? • Do I want to be right or do I want to be at peace? The simple act of questioning your assumptions can crack open an inner door, through which peace becomes possible. If you are open to perceiving your past with fresh eyes and from a more positive and empowered perspective, then having a Mind Detox this spring can work wonders.

intended PLANT BASED OMEGAS.

21 Our busy lifestyles mean that, more often than not, we rely on caffeine and don’t consume enough water and nutrient dense meals. This can leave our bodies and minds dehydrated, lacking in vital nutrients and not functioning at their best. This can impact our performance both in and outside of work. In addition to paying close attention to your food and water intake, one solution to the problem could be the adoption of a nutritional supplementation routine. We spoke to Claire Johnston – global head of brand, marketing and strategic partnerships at Cellnutrition – to learn more. “We all agree that exercise is good for the body and mind, and equally, we all love the Irish provenance of a good plate of food. But it can often be difficult for individuals to meet their daily requirements from diet alone,” she explains. “We are hoping to bridge the gap with our 100% plant based oil, Omegabiocell369. Its combination of linseed, borage, blackcurrant and evening primrose oil provides the ideal ratio of omega 6:omega 3 fatty acids in the body, whilst the unique formulation and patented technology allows the cell to uniquely choose the amount of DHA/EPA it needs.” She goes on to discuss the unique patented bioester technology behind the oil, which produces the fats in ethyl ester form. This provides a high degree of bioavailability and bioretention of fatty acids; omega 3,6 and 9.

“The oil’s fatty acids are rapidly transported to all cells in the body, which has beneficial effects on your health.” In layman’s terms, what this means is that the oil’s fatty acids can be rapidly transported to all cells in the body, which will have beneficial knock-on effects on the health of people who consume it. “Additionally,” Claire tells us, “a transesterification process is carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere, which increases the stability of the product and protects it against fatty oxidative changes.” The oils can be used in any way you like: added to salads, smoothies and porridge or taken on their own. The three different types are listed below: Omegabiocell369: Contains omega 3,6,9 and vitamin E. Omega 3 (ALA) contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. (Beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 2g ALA) Omegabiocell369 kids: Omega 3,6,9, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D3. Designed for children 3 years+. Omega 3,6 and 9 are essential for normal growth and development of the body. Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and contributes to the

normal function of the immune system. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin D is needed for normal growth and development of bones in children, contributes to normal function of immune system in children and contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth. Omegabiocell369 cardio: Omega 3,6,9, vitamin E, vitamin K2, vitamin D3, lecithin. Omega 3 (ALA) contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin D contributes to normal blood calcium levels. Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting. an interview with

Krishna Das CHANTING GOD’S NAME. By Guylaine Williams It has been over five years since Krishna Das sat down at his Bhakti saturated harmonium in Dublin to begin the Kirtan with that deep, dulcet tone of Om that immediately initiates a calm among the participants. If you’ve heard this sound once, you can easily return to that honeyed tone and fall into its embrace. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that Krishna Das returns to Dublin in June 2019. I was delighted to interview him and share our conversation with all of you. GW: Why the desire to return to Dublin, and can you tell me about the last time you were there? KD: There have been many invitations to return, and I just loved my last time there. I spent a whole day just walking around Dublin for hours and hours. The chanting was great and people were really into it. Liam Ó Maonlaí from Hothouse Flowers showed up and played hand drums with me on stage. It was such a wonderful feeling: really nice, friendly, open and enthusiastic. GW: Explain the practice of chanting for me. From what I’ve witnessed, there is not just one way to practice. KD: Yes, everyone experiences it very differently – very individually – because it’s an internal practice. It is a meditative practice. Ultimately, however, it’s not about an individual’s experience. It’s not even about my experience. It is about my guru – Neem Karoli Baba – transmitting his presence, compassion and love through the chanting. The repetition of these names is a practice that he encouraged us to do. Basically, Maharaj-ji said, “From repeating the names of God, everything is accomplished.” The whole idea of chanting is to give

oneself to it as much as one can. And when you start chanting, all your thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, fantasies, desires and so on … simply become things to let go of. Let go, keep letting go and just come back to the Name. Any thought or feeling is transient – it can be let go. How long it takes for us to let go of something might be 30 seconds or 30 lifetimes for some people. So we return to the sound of the Name, over and over again. You simply let go and come back, over and over, and gradually, you will have trained yourself to respond in the most helpful way and to let go of the identification with the thought or the emotion. That doesn’t mean you don’t feel, notice or recognise it, but that you don’t dwell on or identify with it. It’s just a question of trying to be really present in the practice. Eventually, the natural place that we keep coming back to – the sound of the Name – opens us up more deeply to our own true nature and our own presence. The Presence. GW: How did the idea for the workshops begin? KD: Well, I was invited to do one. Then I started realising that not everybody has spent half their life in India. Not everybody has met all the incredible saints, yogis and lamas that I’ve been blessed to be around. So the idea of the workshop was just to share this path with people and share some of the things I’ve gone through and continue to go through. GW: Have you witnessed any common threads within the workshops? KD: Yes. Everybody on Earth wants the same thing. And most people do not know how to get it. Everybody has the same question. Everybody wants to know how

to be happy. Everyone wants to know how to love and be loved. It’s always going to be the same because we are all the same. It just depends on what people are working on at the moment. GW: In a recent interview, I heard you say, “I would just like to always ultimately be under Maharaj-ji’s blanket.” Can you tell more about this? What is it like under there for you? KD: His real blanket is everywhere. It’s not a physical thing. Under His blanket is safety, is home, is love, is acceptance, is being right where you want to be and feeling okay about yourself. He gave us the Name so we could come back into the presence of Love. That’s why I do this practice. That’s what I have: I don’t have anything else. So I share what I have, as I can’t share what I don’t have. The repetition of the name brings me back into Maharaj-ji’s presence. And other people are responding to those feelings in themselves in different ways. And that’s not my business. My business is to do what I do. When I sing, I’m not singing to people – I’m singing to Maharaj-ji: to the loving presence that He is. I’m inviting people to come and sing with me, to enter that place of Love that is within them. falling intolove A CONVERSATION WITH DEVAJI.

Interviewed by Paul Congdon

Devaji is a modern-day mystic and author of the book Illuminated by Love. He has guided spiritual seekers for nearly twenty years. Through his tender, loving wisdom and pure devotion, he offers a unique look at non-dual teachings. Devaji leads retreats in California, Hawaii, Mexico, Ireland and India, as well as online gatherings available to everyone worldwide. Ahead of his visit, we were thrilled to interview him about his incredible teachings on love, human relationships and the nature of existence. What do you feel about the nature of love, and how we can share that in human relationships? In my experience, what we call ‘normal life’ is very much the same as a dream – when you dream at night, what happens is that what’s found in your psyche is what happens in your dream. In the dream, you perceive one character as ‘you’ and the other characters as other people, all playing out different roles … but then when you wake up, you realise that all of it was an interpretation of what lies within your psyche, everyone in that dream symbolised an aspect of yourself, and the only way you could have received the wisdom of that information was through the dream. So, if you have a sense that you can’t rely on love from others, that pattern is going to repeat itself in your everyday life. The real place to look for love is inside yourself. How does your life look when you live from love? Right now – wherever you are, whatever you’re doing – there is a part of you that is totally aware of your body. If you can shift your gaze for a moment, from whatever practical concerns are in your mind, to

that sense of awareness, then that becomes your priority, rather than whatever you are doing. Just feel into it. Feel, with your heart, the part of you that is not bound to anything, and just gently fall into that. When you fall into the experience of unity, the ‘dream’ of life that you experience will reflect that. Life goes on, but the characters that you appear – the people you meet – appear within that feeling. There is no longer a feeling of separation from them. Did you have a powerful experience of realising the nature of love – one that prompted you to follow your current path? I’ve had quite a number of powerful experiences over the course of my life, but I can’t target a specific one. They were tastes of pure bliss, and each time they happened, there was a deeper and deeper grounding of that knowing. When you have tasted that beauty and bliss and love, total understanding arrives. You understand that the players on the stage of life have, to varying degrees, forgotten that bliss. That opens you up to an incredible sense of compassion. How can you engage with that deep sense of love when you’re interacting with another person? We all construct our own play of time, whether consciously or unconsciously.

The nature of the play is that if you are truly humble and open, it is constructed freely. It will bring up everything that is hidden: everything that the mind has wanted to tuck away, that the mind has feared. When you are humble, and you are not built upon reacting defensively, then you freely receive what is being offered and you go inside to hold space and to simply watch the response you have to everything. When you meet from the heart, there is a healing and a melting away of old, ingrained patterns and habits. Need begins to dissolve. There is no catalyst quite like primary relationships to help us uproot all of the protective, adaptive habits that we have hidden away!

“ When you meet from the heart, there is a melting away of old patterns and habits.”

Can you talk some more about the experience of ‘falling away’? Is that really what our journey is about: letting things fall away, rather than trying to ‘get’ something? We are conditioned to believe we need things. As long as we are running after that sense of need, that experience is reinforced. Need is just an experience that

arises when you are pulled away from the nature of your being, which is eternal. Your existence is eternally now. It feels no need. Anything that can fall away was never worth having – it was only a distractive habit. You are eternal. Devaji on the Heart of God The experience of being separate arises out of a shell of protection that is formed to numb the feeling of very young pain. This shell doesn’t just numb the pain, it also numbs the feeling of connection with everything. When one is willing to really receive what is being offered, to open to every single form of stimulation that is arising, to slow down enough to stop the automatic running and receive, then the numbing mechanism, the wall, the ego begins to thin.

“Feel, with your heart, the part of you that is not bound to anything” And as it thins, one becomes much more sensitive: feeling things more acutely, feeling love and perfection and beauty. Feeling the innocence of humanity and, at the same time, the birthing of your own divinity. A true journey like this takes everything and offers everything. The heart is broken wide open and the sensitivity of who you are is connected into the Totality of what is driving everything. The tenderness, the meeting, the fragility, the beauty, the vulnerability of the human condition does not stop – it grows. The more you feel into the human element, the more the heart of God reveals itself.

Join Devaji for three public satsangs which will be held in Dublin and Galway, prior to his 10-day residential retreat at The Boghill Centre in County Clare. Dublin: 6th & 7th August Galway: 8th August Retreat: 9th-18th August Devaji’s book Illuminated by Love will be available at all events, and is also available to buy online through Amazon. devaji.org

POSITIVE TANTR A

the touch of spirit

on the body KINDNESS IS THE KISS WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR. by Dawn Cartwright There is some kiss we want with our whole lives, the touch of spirit on the body. Jalal ad-D īn Muhammad Rumi The Random Acts of Kindness Movement began in a Sausalito, California restaurant in 1982 when Anne Herbert wrote the words, “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty,” on a place mat. That day in Northern California, Anne started a revolution. Her slogan became a bumper sticker and kindness took over the world. When we think of acts of kindness, we think of things like buying a cup of coffee for the person behind us in line, complimenting the first three people we see, giving a friend a potted plant, or surprising a neighbour with freshly baked cookies. We rarely think of random acts of kindness in the bedroom – yet we should, because kindness has been scientifically proven to be the most important quality in relationships. MindBodyGreen writer, Elizabeth Gerson, shared a study from Michigan State University that concluded, “having a partner who is nice and caring leads to higher levels of satisfaction in a relationship.” Since coffee and potted plants are out, what are some ways to bring kindness and its superpowers into the bedroom?

Kindness Is The Kiss We’ve Been Waiting For All Our Lives 1. Desire One of the greatest gifts we can give our lover is to feel and express our desire. With busy lives and lots of stress, we know desire is in there somewhere, yet it’s just a thought, with very little connection to reality. Let’s bring that desire and all those sensual feelings down into the body. Give yourself at least twenty minutes before you meet in the bedroom to close the laptop, turn off the mobile phone, take a shower and feel your desire. When your lover enters the room, turn toward them. Turning your body toward someone sends the non-verbal message that you’re interested. Conscious desire is an act of kindness between lovers. 2. Appreciation “There’s a habit of mind that happy couples have,” psychologist John Gottman explained in an interview, “which is this: they are scanning the social environment for things they can appreciate and say thank you for. They are building a culture of respect and appreciation very purposefully.” First, soften the muscles around your eyes and feel the tension in your eyes begin to melt. Relaxing the eyes relaxes the brain and changes how we see things. Looking for danger is one of our survival mechanisms.

This is why it’s so easy to become focused on what’s wrong and lose track of what’s right. Take a look: what are some things you can appreciate about your lover right now? Find those things and say thank you. Appreciation is an act of kindness between lovers. 3. Touch According to a research study conducted by the University of Hertfordshire, when we are touched in a way that is unhurried, meandering and pleasurable, we discover who we are. Perhaps this is why it feels so amazing when our lover lightly traces the palm of our hand, or slowly brushes the hair from our eyes. This sort of touch, filled with tenderness and acceptance, makes us feel connected to the one touching us, and the person we truly are inside. Every kind of touch – the touch of our gaze, affectionate touch, the touch between our bodies when we make love – creates confidence and makes us strong. When that touch is unhurried and there’s no goal, a shift of consciousness occurs. We find ourselves merging with our lover. Explore this type of meandering, pleasurable touch as a prelude to making love and completely separate from lovemaking too. Touch is an act of kindness between lovers.

27 “One of the greatest gifts we can give our lover is to feel and express our desire.”

4. Something Unexpected According to psychologist Daniel O’Leary, “Novelty breeds sexual excitement. As some evidence of this, research has found that the long-term couples who report having the most intense feelings for each other are those who engage in new and exciting activities together.” Do something unexpected together, something you both enjoy. Pull your lover into the shower with you in the morning and make love to them, buy strawberry plants for the garden, book a Neo Tantra workshop, hire a sailboat, leave a love note in your lover’s pocket, press your body against theirs in the kitchen when there’s no one around. Something unexpected is an act of kindness between lovers. Kindness Is A Superpower You have a superpower: the power to make the person you love the most in the world, the happiest person in the world. You shine because they do. The mystical quality of your relationship is revealed, you watch as consciousness expands through your loving. Suddenly and all at once, every touch is the touch of spirit on the body. WE TALK TO THE LEGENDARY WIM

HOF.

by Aisling Cronin Wim Hof is a Dutch athlete known as ‘The Iceman’ because of his remarkable ability to withstand extremely cold temperatures. By consciously hyperventilating, he is not only able to endure the cold, but can also influence his heart rate, adrenaline levels, and blood alkalinity amongst other things. He now travels all over the world, teaching this special breathing technique – termed the Wim Hof Method – to others. He believes that the Wim Hof Method has the ability to alleviate a number of health conditions, and has worked extensively with scientific researchers all over the globe to prove the efficacy of his Method. We were delighted to get the chance to speak to Wim about his Method and his incredible journey.

Wim describes his method “For people who don’t know what it’s all about, the Wim Hof Method is a breathing method that has been endorsed by strong scientific research, and found to have very deep effects. Of course, we all breathe, all day long, but what this technique does is encourage you to go very deep into your body – and not just your body, but your brain, which is the seat of the mind. One major part of the Wim Hof Method is going into cold water: very consciously going into cold water, while using these breathing techniques, to wake your body up!”

His Method is based on three pillars: cold therapy, breathing and meditation. Wim explains that controlled exposure to the cold can bring a range of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and enhanced immunity. Anyone who has partaken in a Christmas Day swim in the Irish Sea, for example, can attest that as terrifying as the experience might seem beforehand, you are left with an amazing sense of invigoration and purity afterwards. The second pillar of the Method – breath – is vitally important. Wim says that by breathing in a way that heightens the oxygen levels in our body, we can access higher energy levels and reduced stress. The third pillar of the Method – commitment – is a simple willingness to dedicate yourself to the practice. Wim is firmly convinced that with focus and determination, you can eventually learn how to master your body and mind.

The Science Behind the Method Wim’s abilities were once viewed as scientifically impossible. In 2007, the first scientific analysis of the Wim Hof Method was carried out at the Feinstein Institute in New York. In 2011, the University Medical Center St. Radboud in Nijmegen ran a series of tests aimed at examining the capabilities of the Wim Hof Method. Their research concluded that Wim and others, through their use of the Wim Hof Method, were indeed able to voluntarily influence the autonomic nervous system: a feat which had previously been considered impossible. This groundbreaking finding was published in the PNAS and Nature journals, establishing the credibility of Wim’s Method and breeding curiosity among academia. He explains that researchers and scientists across a wide range of disciplines have since taken an interest in the Wim Hof Method, and a variety of promising studies are currently underway.

“We need to learn that we are capable of more than we imagine,” Wim explains. “We need to change the way we think about disease – both physical and mental – and to find out that there is more than meets the eye: there is the unseen, the spirit, the soul itself.” For him, establishing a strong scientific grounding to the Wim Hof Method has been a vital part of that process. Wim’s Spiritual Inspiration Spirituality is a vital element of Wim’s life and work. He believes that through consciously breathing and letting go of our limitations, we can expand our ideas about what we believe to be possible, and in doing so, grow as a species. “When you have a higher cause,” he tells me, “and when you are driven, then you have no fear. Humanity has lost its dedication to a higher cause. Without that, what we have implemented in our society is a regime of fear. This can be

“We need to get back in touch with the deepest parts of ourselves. That is our purpose.” Wim says that even in the confusion and turmoil of our current times, we have an incredible opportunity to return to wholeness. “It is a common saying in the spiritual community to ‘be the light’, but what does that mean?” he asks. “On a very practical level, we can go back to nature … and also go back to the true nature of our being. How do we do that? By daring to be happy, healthy and strong. We are amazing. Life is amazing. So, let us live up to that!” A Mother’s Love Wim credits much of the inspiration behind his work to his devout Catholic mother, who prayed for him to be made a missionary on the night of his birth. Wim believes that this prayer has helped him with his work by instilling him with the courage and determination to go out and spread a message that transcends all that

30

humanity has previously believed to be possible, just as a traditional missionary would. When I asked him if he felt as though his work was predestined – whether he believes he was always meant to raise awareness of the incredible potential of breath – he said: “What I think of as destiny, or predestiny, can all be traced back to what my mother did. There is no underestimating a mother’s love. I don’t know where the idea for my work came from – from the skies, from the stars, from God, whatever – but she is the one who started me on my path.” His Thoughts on the Wim Hof Method Wim believes passionately in a world with an equal distribution of energy, resources and power, where no one feels as though they are unfree or unheard. In order for us to bring this type of world into our lived experience, we first need to access our own inner power. Though he has spent many years delving deeply into the power of breath and controlled cold exposure, and teaching this power to others, Wim does not feel that he, of his own self, is behind the Wim Hof Method’s principles. He sees himself as a channel for something far greater than he is. When he spoke to me about the true

inspiration behind his work, I was very struck by the great determination and reverence in his voice. “This is truth. This is not coming from me. This is nature. I am just passing this wisdom through: it doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to everybody. Everybody has these abilities: absolutely everybody! I always say to people: listen, when you wake up in the morning, ask yourself, ‘am I happy? Am I healthy? Am I strong?’ In modern society today, we have been wrongly schooled. We have been wrongly informed. We have been wrongly brainwashed to serve a system that is polluting and exploiting the world. We have lost our connection with our souls, and it’s time to bring that back.” To listen to our full interview with Wim, just go to our SoundCloud page – go to soundcloud.com and search ‘Positive Life Magazine’ to find us. wimhof.com

seen everywhere you look – in the chemical pollution that we inflict on the planet, in our food industry, in the cruelty we inflict on animals every day. Is that a higher cause? No, of course not. selenium secrets HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU STAY TOPPED UP.

by Aisling Cronin

An estimated one billion humans worldwide get too little selenium, a micronutrient that is essential to human health. A team of Swiss scientists have indicated that things could get worse. They have based their assumption on climate-change models that reveal how shifts in climate and soil could reduce selenium levels in crops in the future. This phenomenon is particularly likely to affect Europe. The team of scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology conducted a thorough analysis of soil samples taken from 1994 to 2016, looking at how the selenium content in the top soil changed over time. By holding selenium levels in soil up against 26 environmental variables, the scientists were able to see how the selenium content would change until the end of the century.

Europe most affected They assessed that selenium deficiency could be on the increase as climate changes lowered the selenium content in soil. About 66% of croplands would lose selenium, they report, estimating that agricultural areas of Europe and parts of the United States would be affected the most. This would worsen the current situation whereby one in seven humans worldwide do not get enough of this vital nutrient.

since selenium is a scarce resource, we may be better off with a strategy that makes better use of this limited resource.

“We need a certain amount of selenium every day to keep ourselves in normal working order.”

Adding selenium to fertilisers The big question is how we ensure that people around the world get enough selenium to maintain proper health. In Finland, the government introduced mandatory selenium-enrichment of fertilisers in the mid-80s as a way of increasing the selenium content in crops. That strategy actually improved the Finnish population’s selenium status. There are disadvantages of this method, however. Not all selenium that is added to fertilisers gets absorbed by the plants, and

Supplements may be better A better approach could be to ingest tablets with organic selenium yeast: the selenium source that is best absorbed by the human body. Pharma Nord’s organic selenium yeast (SelenoPrecise) can document that 88.7% of its selenium content gets absorbed, and 74% is retained in the body – indicating that it has good bioavailability. A few years ago, Swedish scientists produced a study called KiSel-10,

showing that elderly people who took SelenoPrecise daily, together with a supplement called Bio-Quinone Q10, were able to maintain their health more easily than those who were given a matching placebo.

The selenium-dependent enzymes Humans have 25-30 different seleniumdependent enzymes called selenoproteins, which cannot function properly without selenium. These selenoproteins are responsible for body functions such as immune defence, thyroid function (metabolism), the protection of cells, and reproduction. Selenium There is an ongoing discussion within the scientific community about the exact amount needed to stay healthy, but most experts agree that it is somewhere around 70-100 micrograms per day, possibly slightly more. pharmanord.ie

GOOD LIFE 2.0

waking up together THE REBIRTH OF COMMUNITY. by Davie Philip “The good of the individual is contained in the good of all.” John Ruskin

The popularity of collaborative-based initiatives that enable people to meet their needs for food, energy, healthcare and housing, as well as facilitating the sharing and reuse of things, is definitely growing. There is no shortage of new, communityled models that could help reduce our ecological footprint while producing healthier and more resilient villages, towns and city neighbourhoods. People are definitely waking up. However, our society is still driven by values of self-interest, competition and individualism and most people are fast asleep to the existential crises we now face. In a speech at the UN climate conference in Poland last year, David Attenborough warned that the world was facing its “greatest threat in thousands of years” and that “If we don’t take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.” Yet, despite the overwhelming evidence, most seem oblivious. Of course it’s not just climate breakdown, we also face many unprecedented emergencies. The trajectory we are on is a very tricky one - unless we change our ways rapidly. Adapting to the massive challenges ahead and transforming our society will not be easy. I think the most effective responses will be found at the local scale. It will be important to find replicable examples of how, at other times and in other places, people have sustained themselves and lived a good life in balance with the natural world. More than ever we need stories to inspire us.

34

“Not only is another world possible, it is already being lived.” Not only is another world possible, it is already being lived. There are local communities throughout the world and across the country that are acting as livinglaboratories, prototyping low carbon and equitable ways of life that bring wellbeing to all. Sarvodaya, a massive Sri Lankan movement of communities based on Buddhist teachings, and rooted in Gandhian principles of self-reliance and non-violence, may hold some lessons for making the rapid transition needed. For sixty years Sarvodaya has contributed to the well-being of Sri Lankan society with the goal of a comprehensive and nonviolent social transformation. It is now one of the largest participatory democracy networks on the planet. Through a holistic programme of participation and community ‘awakening’, Sarvodaya has helped more than 15,000 villages. Initially it enabled students and teachers to live and work in remote village communities, empowering them to meet their needs with vocational education, micro-finance schemes and livelihood generation projects. Sarvodaya’s work now includes peace-building, conflict resolution, appropriate technology and programmes for people at risk. A new narrative is urgently needed that

can motivate people instead of just scaring them with gloom and doom. To accelerate our response, we will need to share stories on what works and engage in conversations with those around us on ways forward. As we awake to find our environment unravelling, our economies collapsing and our communities fragmenting, the experience and vision from ‘islands of sanity’ like Sarvodaya could help us imagine meaningful ways forward and inspire a rebirth of community. Davie Philip is a community catalyst at Cultivate, the sustainability cooperative based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage. Cultivate will be illuminating stories of transformational local projects and hosting conversations around the country as part of their annual Convergence Festival in June. Interested? cultivate.ie

career

STUDENTS OF CNM SHARE THEIR MOTIVATION.

CNM students and graduates come from all walks of life, professions and backgrounds. Here, three nurses tell us how graduating in Naturopathic Nutrition at CNM has enriched their own approach to health.

“CNM’s holistic approach helped with my skin” Paula McMeel Prior to her enrolment on CNM’s Naturopathic Nutrition course, Paula had suffered with acne for years without understanding the underlying causes. She had unsuccessfully tried a huge amount of lotions, potions and antibiotics, so when her GP suggested yet another antibiotic and the contraceptive pill, she decided to research natural remedies instead. Over the course of her research, she came across CNM’s Diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition and attended an Open Day. “I was so amazed by the comprehensive, holistic course content that I signed up there and then, for both personal and professional reasons,” she tells us. “As a nurse and midwife, I’ve seen women struggle to get pregnant due to being overweight or suffering from hormonal issues, such as thyroid problems, endometriosis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome, the underlying cause of my own acne problem). Pregnancy carries risks of potentially life threatening conditions like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. Postnatally, the body needs the right foods to rebuild and replenish lost nutrients and produce breast milk.” CNM fulfilled Paula’s desire to empower women with health knowledge, whilst also obtaining an accredited qualification. She greatly appreciated the flexibility that part-time study afforded her, and says that the 200 clinical hours she undertook as part of the course enhanced her client interaction skills, giving her the confidence and know-how to set up her own practice.

“The course has been a huge benefit to my own health,” she says, “helping me balance my hormones, reduce tiredness after nightshifts, and improve my skin. It completely changed my thinking about health. Having graduated, I am now setting up private practice as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist, focusing on women’s health, fertility, pregnancy and post-partum issues.”

“CNM fulfilled Paula’s desire to empower women with health knowledge, whilst also obtaining an accredited qualification.” “CNM has given me so many new skills” Ciara Harrington Ciara decided to study nutrition on her return from Australia, as her keen interest in health had been fuelled by experiencing the Australian lifestyle. “I returned home to Ireland and continued my work as a registered mental health nurse,” she says. “I had always believed in holistic care, educating people about the importance of healthy eating in their recovery journey.” Searching for more, she decided to attend a CNM Open Day. She explains, “Listening to the speaker’s passion about food and health, I knew this would be the course for

me. I was blown away by the biomedicine course content. Not only did it add to my nursing knowledge, but it also gave me a greater insight into the body as a whole; how a disease is not just a set of symptoms relating to one particular organ, but to a number of different body systems.” Ciara was impressed by the academic and professional nature of the student clinics, and the way in which students were trained to work in a professional manner, providing the best service possible. She is now dedicated to educating people about the importance of healthy eating. “I became a mother whilst still a CNM student,” she tells us, “and the course gave me in-depth knowledge on healthy pregnancy and optimal recovery. This has really inspired me and my goal for the future is to support women through prenatal, antenatal and postnatal care.”

“Nutrition is sometimes overlooked in fertility” Anita Foote Anita always had an interest in nutrition, but she felt that there was too much confusing information out there. She wanted to enrol on a science and researchbased holistic approach that she could manage within her already busy working week as a full-time fertility nurse. She describes her reasons for choosing CNM thus: “One important point for me was not needing to complete the first year biomedicine due to my degree qualification as a registered nurse, which had already covered anatomy, pathology and physiology. This meant that, instead of three years, I only needed to complete

37

two. Even though I had general knowledge in human biology, the in-depth analysis was stimulating. As any medical professional knows, the learning never stops!” CNM’s holistic approach also played an important role in Anita’s decision to study Naturopathic Nutrition. She says, “Working in a fertility clinic, I know that nutrition is an essential but sometimes overlooked factor in both partners’ ability to conceive. As I progressed through my CNM studies, I started to use the knowledge I was learning in my own life, with my family and friends, and also in my working environment. I would highly encourage medical professionals to incorporate nutrition study into their ongoing education.” You don’t have to be from a medical background to train at CNM. You can now study their renowned Naturopathic Nutrition Diploma in class or online. POSITIVELY ORGANIC

soil food SAVE WASTE, MAKE COMPOST. by Hans Wieland “All you need is compost, compost is all soil needs” Since our arrival in Ireland in 1985, composting as part of recycling household and garden waste has undergone a dramatic change; from dumping grass clippings and putting kitchen waste into black plastic bags, to councils issuing compost bins to households, to the arrival of the brown compost bin and the commercial production of compost through recycling of household and council waste. The benefits of this change, for us and the environment, are obvious. Materials that can be composted account for as much as half of household waste. By making compost at home, in a community, at school or in an allotment, we can not only make a major contribution to waste reduction but, more importantly, to soil fertility and soil renewal. We gardeners call compost ‘black gold’ and we are proud to produce this ever more important fertiliser following the organic mantra: Feed the soil that feeds the plants that feed us.

Composting and Climate Change

Our health depends on healthy soil

There are many ways we can help to reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change, and sometimes supporting the environment is as simple as composting organic waste. Every time we compost vegetable peels or garden weeds we limit organic matter from impacting on climate change. This easy action can greatly increase the amount of carbon that is stored in the soil. Composting increases the formation of stable carbon that remains bound in the soil for long periods of time, and compost applied as organic fertiliser also helps slow down greenhouse emissions in arable soil.

Think about how important prebiotic and probiotic foods are for our gut health, which is vital for our general health. Think about the global soil as the gut or the digestive system of planet Earth and the root ball of plants as their gut. Think how important it is to literally feed the soil with living food that contains a whole range of bacteria and fungi. Think about compost as the best probiotic food for the soil.

Following this line of thinking, you get an idea about the close connection between a healthy soil producing highly nutritious food and our health.

What is in a handful of soil? Good healthy soil is an amazing ecosystem. Soil microbial communities are considered the most biodiverse in the world and it is estimated that a single teaspoon of garden soil may contain thousands of species, a billion individuals and one hundred metres of fungal networks. Producing highly nutritious vegetables depends on the ability of the soil to make every nutrient available to the plant. Like all organic growers all over the world, I believe that it is best for the health of the soil to be fed with manure and compost and not to have our soil food manipulated by the chemical industry.

39

Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to start your very own compost Composting is a natural process requiring little expertise if you just follow these guidelines. So let’s get practical:

Interesting soil fact: Researchers analysing soil from Ireland, long thought to have medicinal properties, have discovered that it contains a previously unknown strain of bacteria which is effective against four of the top six superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics, including MRSA.

“...the organic mantra: Feed the soil that feeds the plants that feed us.”

Choose the right site Ideal is a corner in the North East of your garden, but not too far from the house so it’s easily accessible. Choose the right container A wide range of compost containers are available and are best if you are short of space. I prefer open composting and use recycled pallets to build a three-bay container, each bay one meter deep, wide and high. In bay one I collect all the green materials, in bay two all the brown materials, and if I have enough I fill bay three with alternate layers of greens and browns - each layer between 5cm and 10cm thick. A cubic meter is a good size as the compost needs to heat up to ideally 65 Celsius. A good foundation is a layer of small branches or twigs or straw will help aerate and drain it. Compost the right materials Waste is divided into green and brown materials, depending on its chemical make-up. Green waste is nitrogen rich and includes grass cuttings, vegetable peelings and scraps and young weeds. Comfrey leaves and seaweed can be great additions. Brown waste is carbon rich and includes

egg shells, wood ash, coffee grinds, shredded hedge clippings, autumn leaves, old plants, shredded newspaper, cardboard and straw. Chop or shred organic waste so it can decompose faster. Get the moisture right It is important that your compost is not too wet or too dry. Too much wet material will restrict the amount of air in the compost, slow up the process and lead to offensive odours. In Ireland, I suggest covering your compost heap. Turning the pile in my opinion is not necessary, although it will speed up the process. Using it right After six to nine months, use your sweet smelling, dark brown, crumbly compost as a soil improver or mulch. And don’t be put off if there are a few woody branches or egg shells that are not fully decomposed, you have already made a difference. Hans Wieland has worked and taught at The Organic Centre for over 20 years. He has now ‘retired’ to Neantog Kitchen Garden School in Cliffoney, joining his wife Gaby Wieland, herbalist and naturopath. The couple offer a range of courses and workshops in food growing, foraging, cheese-making, healthy cooking and baking. neantog.com

into taste PIZZA DELIGHT. by David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear. We started The Happy Pear to create a happier, healthier world, and to build a community. We believe that community and friendship play a big role in our human journey: nurturing us as individuals as well as our business. When it comes to sharing food with your friends and community, pizza is the ultimate choice. This year, Stephen got the most amazing Christmas present from his wife: a wood fired pizza oven! He’s been having such fun with it, trying to perfect his pizza dough recipe. So, here is our healthy, super-quick and no-yeast pizza recipe to try with three different toppings. A couple of the topping ideas come from Rome – they might seem a bit out there, but they are tasty and they work!

THE HAPPY PEAR – PIZZA THREE WAYS Taken from our 2018 bestselling cookbook ‘Recipes for Happiness’ 30 mins/makes 4 pizzas (each serves 1 generously)

For the base:

For the tomato sauce: (makes 500g)

200g white flour 200g wholemeal flour, plus extra for dusting 2 teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt 2 tablespoons oil 220ml water

8 sundried tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon maple syrup ½ teaspoon sea salt a pinch of freshly ground black pepper 1½ teaspoons balsamic vinegar

METHOD: 1 Preheat the oven to its maximum temperature. 2 Sift the flours and baking powder into a bowl, then add the salt and oil. Mix well in a circular motion, using your clean hands held in a claw-like shape.

3 Make a well in the middle and slowly add the water. Coat your hand with a little flour and mix until all has come together. Divide the dough into four equal-size balls. 4 Coat a rolling pin with a little flour

to stop it sticking. No need to knead the dough, just roll it out using the rolling pin. Roll each ball out as thin as you can (no more than 5mm thick), to ensure a crispy thin base.

5 Sprinkle a little oil and flour on a baking tray to prevent sticking, then gently place your base on the tray and bake in the preheated oven for 8 minutes, without any topping, to ensure a crispy base.

6 Meanwhile, in a small pot, boil the sundried tomatoes for 5 minutes, until they become soft and easier to blend, then drain the water. Peel the garlic. 7 Put all the ingredients for the tomato sauce (including the sundried tomatoes) into a blender, and whizz until smooth.

“When it comes to sharing food with your friends and community, pizza is the ultimate choice.”

TOPPINGS Here are three of our favourite topping suggestions (each recipe is enough for four pizzas). Potato, Radicchio, Cheese and Walnuts 30 mins 1kg waxy potatoes (such as Maris Piper) 2 tablespoons oat milk 3 tablespoons olive oil ¾ teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 head of radicchio 100g vegan cheese, or other cheese of choice 25g walnuts 1 Boil the potatoes until soft, drain, then mash using a potato masher or large fork, adding the oat milk, olive oil, salt and ground ginger until the mash is thick, but has a nice creamy taste. 2 Chop the radicchio in half, remove the firm core in the centre and bottom that is holding it together, and cut the rest into thin, small bite-size pieces. Grate the cheese. Lightly crush the walnuts. 3 Slather a generous serving of tomato sauce on your precooked pizza base, but aim for only a quarter of the sauce you’ve made – you don’t want to make the base soggy. Gently spread over the mashed potato to give a decent base layer. Next, sprinkle on about three-quarters of the radicchio, the lightly crushed walnuts and a good handful of cheese.

2 Grate the cheese. Roughly chop the mushrooms and put them into a bowl. Add the tamari and mix well so that each piece of mushroom gets nicely coated. 3 On your pre-cooked pizza base, spread a generous serving of tomato sauce (about a quarter of the quantity you’ve made). Cover with kale, a good sprinkling of cheese and some oyster mushrooms, and sprinkle some almonds on top. 4 Lay the base on a heated baking tray and put into the hot oven for 4–6 minutes, until the cheese melts and the base starts to brown slightly.

Fig, Asparagus, Cheese and Cashew Nuts 30 mins 4 fresh figs 100g vegan cheese, or other cheese of choice 200g fresh asparagus, or trimmed fine green beans 1 tablespoon oil a pinch of sea salt 25g cashew nuts 1 Thinly slice the figs and grate the cheese. If using asparagus, remove the woody base of each spear. In a bowl, dress the asparagus spears with the oil and salt.

4 Transfer to a warmed baking tray and bake in your hot oven for 8 minutes, until the base is nice and crispy, and the topping is turning golden. Bake for longer if the base is still soft. Sprinkle with the rest of the radicchio to give it a nice pop of colour.

2 Spread about a quarter of the tomato sauce you’ve made on your pre-cooked pizza base, then sprinkle over the cheese and a layer of figs. Top with asparagus and a sprinkle of whole or chopped cashew nuts.

Kale, Mushroom, Cheese and Almonds 30 mins

3 Transfer to a warmed baking sheet and cook in the hot oven, until the cheese melts and the base starts to brown slightly and crisp.

100g kale 2 tablespoons olive oil a pinch of sea salt 100g vegan cheese, or other cheese of choice 100g oyster mushrooms, or other mushrooms of choice 3 tablespoons tamari/soy sauce 30g flaked almonds 1 Using your clean hands, remove the kale from its stalks and rip into bite-size pieces. Add the oil and salt and massage for a minute, allowing the salt to tenderise the kale.

short & sweet 43 Kindness BEING FRIENDLY, GENEROUS AND CONSIDERATE. by George Esser When someone annoys us, we tend to become judgmental and critical. Yet, when we do something annoying, we want tolerance and understanding. It seems that we all have a need for kindness, both to give it and to receive it. A lack of kindness seems to be today’s default behaviour. It’s easier to be rude and superior than show kindness. Disregard for others is really a sign of our own weakness and insecurity. Being kind in all situations shows self-respect, selfdiscipline and self-esteem. We have all been in a situation where we needed people around us to be kind. Maybe when your child was throwing a temper tantrum in public, or when you

are feeling particularly down about life. Perhaps you are the telemarketer who really needed a job and it’s the only one you could get. The people who don’t receive kindness are the ones who often need it most. We are all prone to bad days, but a day will never be completely bad if we show kindness. There are many benefits to showing kindness. It will often diffuse a tense situation by positively impacting the feelings and well-being of everyone involved: you, the recipient of your kindness and any observers. Ultimately, kindness is a choice. Choose kindness even when it doesn’t come easy. Choose to give three acts of

random kindness, every day, for 21 days and just watch how it positively impacts yourself and the people around you. Itlhealth.com

When former barrister Aedamar Kirrane was a mature student in UCD, doing a B.A. degree in Philosophy and English with plans to become a writer, she experienced a spontaneous spiritual awakening and entered what Deepak Chopra calls God-consciousness. She told me that her philosophy studies – in particular, the work of Martin Heidegger – finally gave her a mature understanding of what God is. Heidegger defined Being itself as the fundamental principle of life, and emphasised the importance of acknowledging that everything that exists has its being in Being. Aedamar then realised that what Heidegger called Being was, in fact, from a spiritual perspective, God.

“Aedamar had profound experiences that revealed to her the simple truth that God is Love.” She shared with me that at this time, she began to meditate, and very quickly had profound spiritual experiences that revealed to her the simple truth that God is Love. Marrying her philosophical learning to her lifelong interest in God and spirituality helped her to understand the innate harmony of Nature, Humanity and God, through the principle of Love. She now believes that Life is a conscious manifestation of Love, and that our individual and collective experience will improve exponentially when we make Love central to all that we do. She now supports individuals, groups and organisations to recognise spiritual love as a powerful resource in life. Through her blog and her School of Living Love, she writes about and teaches ‘practical love’ as a way of life. She says, “Why not try Love and see what happens? Pretty much everything else has failed!”

46 Orbs Of Spirit THE GIFTS OF WEARABLE WATER. by Aisling Cronin For a beautiful, unique piece of art with a spiritual twist, look no further than the incredible Water Orbs of Celestial Aquatics. Ruth Le Gear and Graham Reid are the dynamic duo behind the business: Ruth creates water essences, while Graham is a talented glass artist. Ruth has dedicated her life to understanding and communicating with water, and has gone to great lengths to secure the purest essences for Celestial Aquatics’ Water Orbs. She has collected water from icebergs in the Arctic, wandered the deserts of New Mexico and stood on the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. Wherever Ruth’s journey takes her, her sole intention is to communicate with the life force of the water in that area. She explains, “Each body of water is totally unique. It has its own physical and spiritual history, its own mineral content, and its own unique vibration that it imparts on all living beings it encounters.”

“Ruth has collected water from icebergs in the Arctic, wandered the deserts of New Mexico and stood on the tip of the Cape of Good Hope.” In her studio, Ruth studies the water samples that she has collected on her travels. Slowly, the essence of the water is revealed. Ruth then takes a small amount of the water – which holds all of its history and potential – and she uses it to create an essence. When this process is complete, Graham blows a glass vessel to hold the water essence, which is then sealed inside the glass, so they can be used as ‘wearable water’ pendants. “Our orbs seem to be very popular with healers and therapists, as they really help them with their work,” Ruth shared with me. “We’re so grateful for all the support we’ve received so far and we hope that our essences keep helping people in the future.” celestialaquatics.com

The film Root Cause, recently released on Netflix, has caused a lot of controversy in the mainstream dental community, but the problems associated with dental infections are well known in the holistic community. The oral cavity, teeth, gums, tongues, muscles and jaw joints all have a systemic effect on your overall health. The reverse is also true: systemic issues can also affect your oral health. As such, I have always recommended an integrated approach to improving a patient’s overall health. However, there are also very simple but important steps that the patient themselves can take to expedite and improve their healing.

“There are very simple but important steps that you can take to expedite your healing.”

I recommend that patients improve their BMW. No, you do not need to buy an expensive German automobile! BMW is my acronym for Breathing, Meditation and Water. These are three very important steps before starting any holistic treatment. Breathing is the body’s main way of balancing and controlling the PH of the body. The body has a very specific PH range and if the body is too acidic or alkaline, the normal enzymatic processes stop working efficiently. Proper hydration is essential to good function, while meditation is known to help balance the nervous system. All three techniques are free and can be done in the safety of your own home. In my opinion, they support any treatment that I recommend, whether that is mercury removal, jaw issues, grinding and infections, orthodontics or even cosmetic dentistry. dundrumdentalsurgery.ie

The Brilliance of Broccoli SURPRISING BENEFITS. by Venus CuMara On my journey to heal cancer without chemo or surgery, I’ve had to wade through a lot of frustratingly contradictory research. Although I am still on my healing journey, I feel healthier than ever. I have also narrowed down my extensive research on how people can decrease their risk of cancer. We all know that health is big business, and I needed to find solutions that were natural, effective and affordable. The most natural, effective and affordable locally sourced medicine, in Ireland (besides of course, Love, good air and good water) is broccoli. Yes, it’s that simple!

“I needed to find solutions that were natural, effective and affordable” The John Hopkins Research Institute has been researching broccoli since the 1970s. They proved that its active compound, sulforaphane, gets released when you chew or juice raw broccoli or broccoli sprouts. As sulforaphane is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, its anti-inflammatory action can have profound effects on many kinds of inflammatory diseases: improving the behavioural checklists and verbal communication of those with autism, schizophrenia and depression; lowering DNA damage; and preventing or reducing prostate and bladder cancers. It can help some types of diabetes and help regrow hair, to name but a few of its many successes Sulforaphane-rich vegetables include cauliflower, cabbages, kales, watercress and radishes. For more information on the best ways to consume broccoli, plus a simplified science of this fascinating food, visit Venus Cumara’s YouTube channel.

Reawaken Innocence THE END OF RESISTANCE. by Davidji At the moment you were born, you were perfect, pure, and whole. You were innocent, accepting and had a beginner’s mind regarding all things. You had never known the sting of harm, shame, guilt or grievance and knew only the sweetness, goodness and kind flow of the Universe.

“You are worthy of forgiveness.” Then you began to resist certain things. You started to judge. Your acceptance became less unconditional. But the time for resistance is over! It’s time to reawaken our innocence and curiosity. Whatever choices we’ve made, we made them from our highest level of consciousness at the time. So many people live in pain, because they are incapable of forgiving themselves; many are afraid

to follow their hearts, because they can’t bear the pain of it breaking again; others question their self-worth, because they are convinced God or the Universe does not love them unconditionally, and they won’t forgive themselves, because they don’t believe they are entitled to be free from the karma of their actions. The late, great Sufi Master David Simon taught me that if you are willing to wholeheartedly own a choice you’ve made, and if you believe in your heart of hearts

that you would make a different choice today, then you are worthy of forgiveness. Davidji is leading a workshop called ‘Saoirse 2019 – Power, Presence and Grace’ in the Marine Hotel, Sutton, Co. Dublin, from March 29th to March 31st. Visit perfecthealth.ie to learn more. Positive Life readers can use the code PLSpiritualWarrior for a discount of €40. davidji.com

THE SUPERPOWERS OF ACAI. by Alison McEvoy There are certain foods that nature seems to have been extra generous towards. These so called ‘superfoods’ are packed with an extraordinarily rich nutrient content. Acai berries are one such new superfood on the block. Native to Central and South America, these little purple berries are among the foods that contain the highest content of antioxidants. Not only that, they are also rich in B vitamins, vitamins A, D and E, protein, fibre and necessary minerals, such as zinc and magnesium. I spoke with Johnny Molloy of Mo Bhia Duit (meaning ‘my food for you’) who has teamed up with growers in Brazil to bring certified organic, Rainforest Alliance acai powder and frozen fruit pulp, to Ireland. Johnny is a trained Celtic Shaman who works with native Irish herbs and sells a few select health foods such as wheatgrass from Donegal, honey from his own hives in Athlone, and acai from Brazil.

The first thing he said to me was, “Food is medicine, and medicine is food. That’s what we’re all about.” Recognising our connection to the land means a recognition of the requirement of our bodies to receive food that comes directly from the land.

“Food is medicine, and medicine is food.” Moreover, in order to ‘give back’, some of the profits from each acai product sold are returned to Brazil where they go towards building a school in the rainforest, where

the acai growers and pickers live. Now that I’ve been introduced to this super-berry, I look forward to an acai bowl becoming my spring/summer breakfast...a welcome relief from porridge! Also in the summer pipeline is an organic, vegan acai sorbet, so keep your eyes peeled. Facebook.com/mobhiaduit

The Game of Life HITTING RESTART AT MID-TIME by Alison McEvoy “Up to 35 I won, from 35 to 40 life fought back, from 40 to 45, life won, and from 45 I’ve restarted my life.” In the above, Michael Ryan sums up the process of aging in terms of a football match. In his game against time, Michael found that nearing 45 he needed to change playing fields. He began a professional and personal self-reinvention - an ongoing process but one which peaked last summer when he took time out to reflect and harvest his experiences thus far into a book entitled Hit your reset button. An accountant by trade, after years in the corporate world helping businesses to transform their finances, Michael felt the call to use his talents to transform his own reality, to be the ‘transformation director’ of his own life, and encourage others along the way too. He now speaks at conferences offering witty, playful, engaging and thought-provoking talks in a variety of settings.

“Michael felt the call to... be the ‘transformation director’ of his own life.” Hit your reset button reaches out to your ‘average lad’ who finds that he just can’t do what he used to do before and offers a “humorous way of looking at it”. It delves into topics that men might have difficulty talking about over a few pints but which are invaluable at that stage of life when there’s no other choice but to ‘reset’ and find a new way forward. An essential component to the book is its conciseness; “It’s a book designed to be read in 90 minutes, with a clear message, delivered in the same effective way that men shop!” Soon to be available on Amazon as a paperback, Hit your reset button will, ‘in a playful way’, get you thinking about your life and open new ideas into your world.

Get Wise to Hemp

“... you can heal with it, wear it, build with it and take care of so many human needs in a sustainable way.”

A SUSTAINABLE WAY TO FULFIL OUR NEEDS. by Alison McEvoy During my recent visit to The Hemp Company on Capel Street, I was welcomed by Declan in The Hemp Kitchen. Behind a counter which he himself fashioned out of hempcrete, Declan prepared a fresh, organic toast of hemp, turmeric and lemon juice ,with a dash of ACV, as we awaited the arrival of Jim McDonald - owner and founder of The Hemp Company. I’d caught Jim at a good time. He was excited about the first Asian Hemp comference in Kathmandu, Nepal, which he would be jetting out to the following week. This is a man passionate about hemp!

Jim. Following this, Jim’s business life turned a corner. He subsequently opened a sustainable clothing shop in the heart of Dublin 2 and later moved to his present location on Capel Street.

Jim began his working life in the clothing industry. One day, while fundraising on the streets, selling t-shirts for Friends of the Earth, a brief but fateful encounter occurred; “A light turned on... and somebody put me wise to hemp,” says

Today, in The Hemp Company you can find everything from hemp clothing and cosmetics, to chocolate and juice. Jim aims to put all who pass through the store ‘wise to hemp’; you can heal with it, wear it, build with it, ultimately taking care of

so many human needs in a sustainable way. Downstairs, while you wait for your smoothie, juice or hemp milk coffee, why not peruse the minature hemp museum and open your mind to the wonders of hemp. hempcompany.ie Facebook.com/thehempkitchen

Heart Health TIPS AND TOOLS TO REGAIN AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY HEART. Simply by making a few dietary and lifestyle changes you can keep your heart healthy! It is vitally important to have an annual checkup via your GP. Be informed by checking your cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure regularly. These are the risk factors for heart disease, so regular screening is one of the best means of prevention. Taking plant sterols daily should be your first step in lowering LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol. They work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. Among the other dietary changes you can make are; include lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil and whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats and wholegrain pasta. You can enjoy moderate amounts of dairy (mostly as cheese e.g. ricotta and Greek yogurt). Consume plenty of omega-3s from oily fish (sardines, mackerel,

anchovies, salmon, herring) as they play an important role in thinning the blood and reducing inflammation throughout the body – in the blood vessels, the joints, skin and elsewhere. Taking a daily fish oil supplement, naturally rich in omega-3, can support your heart, brain, joints and skin and is a simple way to safeguard your health. Also consume less meat and meat products. Flavour foods with herbs, spices and stock instead of salt, which can increase your risk of high blood pressure. Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors for developing heart disease. Check out Quit.ie for support. Other lifestyle factors include doing regular exercise, losing weight if overweight and reducing stress. Exercising for as little as 30 minutes, 5 days a week can greatly improve your heart health. Check out a new cholesterol lowering online

The Gift of Fire RETURN OF THE GRANDFATHER. by Dawn Rafferty Gradually, the elder’s body settles. His hand on the cup of hot chocolate is steady as he brings it to his mouth. He takes some long, slow puffs on a very big cigar. And then, he begins: “What a beautiful night for a fire….” Do you sometimes feel like we are living in a world that has grown cold as ‘progress’ pulls us away from precious, meaningful relationships with each other, human and non-human alike? When humanity stumbles, the Spirit of Fire, sometimes lovingly referred to as Grandfather Fire, will seek a human form as a conduit to transmit the Guidance that is needed to restore balance. When the call to serve this purpose is accepted, it is a blessing for all. As offered through Don David Wiley, shaman in the Huichol tradition of remote Mexico, Grandfather Fire will make a second appearance here in Ireland, which He calls ‘the home of the gods’, on June 15, 2019. Hosted by Sacred Fire Mayo, Las Tine

Nature’s Knowledge HOW THE PLANET HEALS. by Bernard Harris

How does nature communicate with us? It does so by simply growing. On our little island, it grows in abundance – we just have to look! One ancient practice of our native medicine men and women was to inspect the plants that grew in the areas where we defecated (these would have been specific areas outside our villages)! It was understood that whatever grew there was exactly what the villagers required in order to heal their conditions. Today, a variety of plants, fungi and seaweeds grow in huge abundance on our island, so when we apply this ancient method to our modern lives, what do we see? Hawthorn has a long history of use, confirmed safety, and clinical evidence to support its cardiovascular benefits,

“When we apply this ancient method to our modern lives, what do we see?” especially in terms of its cardiotonic activity (cardiovascular disease is the top death-causing disease in Ireland). Hawthorn is one of the oldest known medicinal plants used in European medicine. Its cordial actions on the heart were first reported by the first-century Greek herbalist Dioscorides, and later by the Swiss physician Paracelsus (1493–1541). Seaweeds like Bladder Rack are high in iodine, and as a nation, we are deficient in this vital mineral. Nettles contain anti-histamine properties, which would be useful for the large percentage of us who suffer from seasonal allergies. Dandelion carries a bitter quality, yet has beneficial

effects on the liver too. All edible fungi have polysaccharides, which are known for being immunomodulating (regulating the immune system). So why not listen to nature?

Darkroom Retreat SURRENDER INTO BEING. by Máire Ní G The Tao says; “When you go into the dark and this becomes total, the darkness soon turns into light.” In ancient times, Taoist sages earnestly sought the perfect cave for their higher practice of Inner Alchemy. Master Mantak Chia has created a modern chamber of darkness to elicit experiences in the psychic and spiritual realms, offering a return to one’s primordial state. Just a couple of days into my two weeks in the Darkroom Retreat at Tao Garden, Thailand, I was indeed experiencing ‘the light’. Moreover, it was a deep union with my true self. Mapping out my Internal Universe – the sense of inner awareness and connection – was profound. Immersed in hours upon hours of Taoist meditation, guided by Mantak Chia, I experienced stellar vibrations and cosmic frequencies in my body. There was a resonant feeling of being

“This experience of darkness was like a cosmic hug.” in a very safe, protected, womb-like space. And as I prepared to leave and be rebirthed, I felt a surge of appreciation for this experience of darkness. It was like a cosmic hug. As I returned to the outside world, my vision and my brain stumbled to connect. I felt unsteady on my feet, like a newborn

deer. Gasping in awe when I saw the trees, and bowled over by the beauty of nature, I fully realised that we live in a paradise. As I integrate the many experiences of wisdom and light, I’m very happy to be welcoming Master Mantak Chia to Dublin to teach the Tao from May 10 – 16.

WHY SELF-LOVE DURING MEDITATION IS IMPORTANT. by Alison Canavan

There is a common misconception that meditation means clearing the mind and stopping our thoughts. The reality couldn’t be further from this. It’s impossible to stop your thoughts if you are a living being, but what is possible is to become an observer of them. Observing your thoughts – but not becoming involved in them – is a key part of mindfulness meditation practice. It’s called a ‘practice’ for a reason because there is no end goal. No perfect meditator exists, as every time you sit down, the experience is different. Your practice reflects real life, and just like real life, things are changing all the time. We change and grow every day, but it’s how we show up in these moments that determines how we feel about life, and also about ourselves. Our inner world is complex and complicated. The world does not lend itself to self-reflection and silence. In fact, we are constantly being pulled away from ourselves, which is why a lot of people experience anxiety when they begin to practice mindfulness meditation. One of my mentors from UCLA, Rebecca Peters once said to me: “Mindfulness not met with selfcompassion causes anxiety.”

56

This sentence changed everything for me and it makes so much sense. If we are not used to sitting alone with our

“In a world full of imperfect people, a little kindness goes a long way.” thoughts and feelings, and then one day we do, we can’t control what comes up for us. Difficult emotions and memories can rise to the surface. If we don’t meet these with kindness and self-compassion, of course we will become anxious as we try to deny them and push them down again. But what is self-compassion and how do we cultivate it? The Buddhist understanding of self-compassion means offering kindness, patience and nonjudgmental understanding to others as well as oneself. In a world where we are so hard on ourselves, this can be quite difficult to do, especially in the beginning. I remember one day, the tears flowed during a class where I was trying to cultivate a sense of kindness to myself. Quite frankly, it felt quite alien to me, as we are not taught these skills in the Western

world. It was also uncomfortable, but with great guidance and practice, I continued. What lay ahead was great inner peace and freedom. As the Dalai Lama says, “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” So the next time you hear that little voice within speak unkindly to you, talk back, but from a place of kindness. Talk to yourself as you would a friend and know that in a world that is full of imperfect people, a little kindness goes a long way. alisoncanavan.com

CERTIFICATION IN APPLIED BIOMAGNETIC THERAPY. by Alison McEvoy

“Amazing from start to finish,” began Maria Stevens, from her home in Malin Head, when we spoke about her training experience in Applied Biomagnetic Therapy with Dr Raymond Cadwell. Maria is already a homeopath, kinesiologist, reflexologist and bach flower remedy practitioner. She has become concerned, in recent years, at the pervasiveness of autoimmune diseases and of Lyme disease, which is particularly prevalent in her area. The thought that led her to biomagnetic therapy was that “there has to be a therapy that can get to the bottom of this.” Applied Biomagnetic Therapy, with its engagement with illness on four levels from physical to spiritual, gets very much to the root cause - revealing microbes, underlying traumas and ancestral or soul issues that may be causing physical disease. Maria is one of a number of students who recently embarked on the Practitioner’s Certification Foundation programme with Raymond last November. She describes how, for five days, she and the group were immersed in biomagnetic therapy; both receiving and giving. ‘Receiving’ Raymond’s form of biomagnetic therapy is unique, in that he marries with it his experience in trauma and spiritual healing, making it an applied version of the therapy and an overall balancing and rejuvenating experience to receive. One outstanding feature of the programme for Maria was the fact that self-care was made paramount. Opportunities were created throughout the day for participants to receive

biomagnetic treatments and spiritual or soul healing from Raymond. “I’ve never had this kind of training experience,” she remarked, “Yes, on many trainings they talk about self-care but actually doing it during a programme was an amazing experience. We are always healing ourselves and he really put across the importance of self-care to us.”

“The change is happening on the plinth, there and then... that’s what I love about it.” The course officially began at 9am, however the group would gather between 7.45am and 9am to observe or receive sessions, as they felt called to do. Again, after lunch, for 45 minutes, the group would lie down and cosy up with blankets and pillows to experience soul healing through guided meditations and “energy rejuvenation”, as Maria called it. At the end of the day’s programme, from 5pm to 7pm, Raymond continued to offer healing sessions for participants to receive and observe. ‘Giving’ From the outset, the practitioner’s mindset is cultivated as students sit at plinths rather than desks. Then, within a few hours of training, on day one, Maria was already practising biomagnetic therapy; communicating with “that innate intelligence of the body” and

placing magnets on bodies. Thanks to this emphasis on practice and the resulting confidence it creates, Maria felt “ready to roll with it straight away.” With Applied Biomagnetic Therapy, the change in a person is initiated in the very moments a practitioner is working with the body; communicating, listening, unearthing the roots of illness and applying magnets to neutralise microbial imbalances; “The change is happening on the plinth, there and then... that initial change has begun and that’s what I love about it.” Between last November and this coming March 2019, Maria has 20 case studies to perform in order to advance to the Certification programme. It’s only January and Maria has completed them all. Now, she eagerly awaits the coming of spring, and March. At her ripe old age of 60 plus years, she chuckles at the excitement she feels about this new opportunity to learn and serve people’s health; “This is about becoming a master practitioner. Watching Raymond serve, I see an ethereal quality about him which I think comes from all his life experience, working closely with people. His firm intention is to serve a client.” Dr Raymond Cadwell Ph.D is offering two more Foundation Courses in Applied Biomagnetic Therapy this year in May and September 2019. He regularly runs free experience evenings at locations around Dublin. For more information see: raymondcadwell.com/experience-evening

energy and light WONDERS OF PRANIC HEALING. by Paul Congdon Sometimes I wonder whether we’re all superheroes in human bodies, and I marvel at the body’s ability to heal itself. A lot of very experienced healers use that phrase very powerfully and tell you, “you did your own healing – you allowed it to happen.” A few weeks ago, I had a minor accident and cut myself pretty deeply on my hand. It bled for quite some time, but I forgot about it, headed out to an event, and within a week it was as if it had never happened. My body effected a complete healing. It reminded me that when we get out of our own way, the body just goes about the business of healing itself. Kinda miraculous really when you think about it, but maybe this is the way it’s meant to be, providing we keep our minds out of the process. There are many healing modalities on the planet right now, inviting us all to relearn and reuse these ancient abilities we have. We have much to learn from healing arts such as Acupuncture, Reiki, Ayurveda or Amatsu, as well as our own Celtic healing wisdom, of course. My interest in healing recently led me to take a course in Pranic Healing®, led by David Connell. Pranic Healing is a simple yet powerful non-touching complementary treatment which can

60

enhance any area of your life. It is highly systematic and scientific in its approach: a feature that distinguishes it from other complementary therapies. Pranic Healing works on the principle that the body is a self-healing organism. This modality is Tony Robbins’ favourite healing practice – so much so that Master Stephen Co (US head of Pranic) now appears at Tony’s massive events around the USA. My course was a weekend course, covering

“Pranic Healing works on the principle that the body is a selfhealing organism.” techniques for healing yourself and effecting distant healing. It also included meditation practices like the Twin Hearts one (look this up on youtube – it’s a gem). I have to say I loved every minute of the course. It was wonderful to sit back and be reminded of what you and your body can do when operating in sync. If you believe you can, then you can. We were shown different protocols for healing certain minor ailments and we paired off

to work with healing partners to get a feel for the energy. Pranic Healing works on the basis that we need to cleanse the affected area of the body before we can send in the healing energy, and the hands are seen as powerful transmission tools of this light energy. Once you lean how to cleanse, then you can transmit light healing energy from your own source using the power of intention, while coating it with a sense of caring and love. As the weekend progressed, we learnt more about how the energy body works. David’s light-hearted style really helped us on our way to becoming X-men and X-women! My healing partner on the day was a scientist who wished to expand her mind about how this stuff works, which shows you we are living in a changing world, opening up to the unseen. If it’s good enough for Tony Robbins, then it’s good enough for me. Pick a superhero name and go for it: your body will thank you.

‘Jyotish’, or ‘vedic astrology’, in Sanskrit means the ‘science of light’. Jyotish has its origins in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the ancient scriptures of India and is known as the eyes of the Vedas because of the extraordinary insights it brings. Vedic Astrology can help us live in a more enlightened way as we develop an understanding of our life through the personal planetary placements that illuminate our chart and are a map of our challenges, and potential. Astrology offers many opportunities for renewal, rebirth and transformation. Every time a planet moves sign and house in the sky, a new energy comes. Each time this happens, there is a new variable which offers potential for renewal, understanding and new directions. Just as the movement of the sun gives rise to the seasons and the moon the tides, each movement of the key planets triggers changes within and around us: Mercury and Rahu offer the greatest possibility for financial change, both positive and challenging. Mars gives us energy to act and pushes us to use our talents and brings frustration when we don’t. Movement of the sun inspires spiritual and personal growth and strengthening. Venus boosts our love-life and enjoyment of the world. Jupiter puts us on the right path. The moon rules our

emotions and moves house and sign every 2.5 days.

“Every time a planet moves sign and house in the sky, a new energy comes...which offers potential for renewal, understanding and new directions.” Every movement brings new possibilities. When one variable in a system changes, the whole system that is our life has the potential to shift. The Planetary periods, which are chapters in the book of our life, are ruled by each of the nine key planets and have between six (Sun) and 20 (Venus) years of dominance for the major period, as well as all planets influencing shorter sub-periods. Astrology is a great teacher and Saturn is the most powerful teacher, with the movements of Saturn in our chart offering the greatest opportunity for growth and transformation – both in terms of transits in the sky and in Saturn’s planetary periods – major and sub. Saturn

moves slowly but decisively and brings lasting change. Saturn spends 2.5 years in a sign. In life, it is a mistake to allow the shadows of the past hold you back. An understanding of astrology shows when chapters and doors open and close so that you can make the best of knowing the planetary timings for optimum growth and simply to make sense of things. Eclipses have the same potential. They give us a cosmic kick into action, to move forward or resolve old problems in areas we are not progressing in that need to be brought into karmic balance. Each degree and change brings something new. When planets are retrograde, things are happening under the surface, even though we may not realise it. When planets go direct, things come to the surface. Every movement, every transit, every day and every sun-rise has a new potential. Always using our free will for others and our own highest good whilst engaging with life is ultimately what brings lasting growth and helps us realise that potential.
