Lately, our curiosity has been piqued by a new extraterrestrial-themed movie called CE-5. As defined by extraterrestrials expert Dr. Steven Greer, CE-5 – “close encounter of the fifth kind” — is broadly defined as humaninitiated extraterrestrial contact. In this event, humans initiate peaceful, bilateral contact with extraterrestrials through conscious, voluntary and proactive means. The movie delves into this subject in stunning detail.

TEENAGE GIRLS DESIGN MEMORY-BOOSTING APP.

by Aisling Cronin An award-winning app called Memory Haven, designed to help patients with dementia, has just been released on app stores … and it’s all thanks to three amazing Drogheda-based teenage girls and their mentor. Joy Njekwe, 17, Rachael Akano, 15, and Margaret Akano, 17, are the champions of Technovation Girls, an international competition that invites young women to develop an app to solve a problem in their community. The girls’ mentor, an Afro-Irish developer named Evelyn Nomayo, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science and statistics. Memory Haven claimed first prize in the competition at the 2020 Technovation World Summit, beating over 1,500 entrants from 62 countries. Nomayo and the girls were thrilled when they learned of their success – their reaction video has been widely circulated on social media!

“Our main aim is just to help as many people as possible,” project manager Margaret explained. “We hope that our app can go global one day and reach millions of people who are affected by dementia and just make their lives somewhat easier.”

“We hope that our app can go global one day and reach millions of people who are affected by dementia.” Mentor Nomayo shared that the app idea was inspired by her own mother’s battle with dementia: “My mom started having dementia problems three to four years ago. The first time I realised something was wrong was when she started hallucinating.

She lived in America, but she’d be imagining that she was in Nigeria. One time [when I was visiting her] I gave her something to sew, and I could see the pain in her eyes because she forgot how to. She used to be a seamstress, but she couldn’t do it anymore. So some of my experiences that I had with her, the team translated into technology to help others.” Memory Haven addresses the three most common difficulties associated with dementia: speech impairment, loss of memory, and a diminished capacity for recognition. Its functions include a photo wallet that lets users scan through tagged pictures of the important people in their lives, memory games to improve cognitive function, and health alerts that remind both patients and caregivers of appointments or medication times.

2 Nurturing Nature THE CHARITY INSPIRING A LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS. by Aisling Cronin Across the pond, environmental charity Trees for Cities is calling for British schools to embrace outdoor learning. The charity aims to improve lives by planting trees in cities. They are currently providing free online educational resources for teachers and parents, which include guides on planting and growing vegetables, as well as videos and suggestions for nature-related games and exercises. David Elliott, chief executive of Trees for Cities, said: “We know that deep and lasting change can only be made if tomorrow’s generation is involved and inspired to take action. We believe that an understanding and appreciation of the environment must be gained during childhood and through outdoor education.” Trees for Cities has also been transforming school grounds across Britain into gardens, in a bid to inspire hands-on learning and get children excited about growing and eating

healthy food. To date, the charity has created 73 ‘edible playgrounds’ in school grounds, working with more than 16,000 schoolchildren. Craig Heeley, headteacher at Lemington Riverside primary school in Newcastle, said: “Since the edible playground’s completion in January 2020 the world has been thrown into turmoil by Covid-19 – but throughout the months of lockdown it has provided a place of calm and inspiration for the vulnerable children and the children of key workers who continued to attend school. “For many of the children (and staff ), it was their first experience of growing fresh produce and the culmination of the school chef using the home-grown produce for the children’s dinner in the summer was hugely exciting for all involved.”

3 Keep it Green NATURE IS OUR LIFELINE. by Alison McEvoy I’ve noticed my local park getting fuller and fuller these past months. Little feet, big feet, little bikes, big bikes, scooters and electric scooters...people of all ages getting out and about. My usual feeling of gratitude has quadrupled over the fact that I live near a beautiful, expansive park, complete with little tree-canopied walkways that allow you to feel like you are walking down a country lane, when in fact you are in a European capital city. We live in a country with so much green: so many trees, parks and coastal areas in which we can take joy and peace, and release our tensions and stresses. I have been to parts of the world where cities consist almost entirely of concrete constructions. The concrete rises, rather than the trees, so that when you look up you see strings of roads criss-crossing the sky. One Tree Planted is a global organisation, based in Vermont, that

focuses on the act of planting trees. This simple act, when repeated over and over again, creates patches of earth filled with wildlife, beauty, fresh air and vistas that restore and delight the human mind. Trees are unsung heroes and One Tree Planted is here to sing that song. “Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. Have you ever taken an aspirin? It comes from the bark of a tree!” You can fundraise, become a tree ambassador, donate to a specific location in the world that inspires you or take part in their environmental education school’s programme. If you’ve become more of a nature lover in recent months, why not spread the love? onetreeplanted.org

positively newsworthy the little things 1 See Yourself by Aisling Cronin

“Remember your loving heart.”

Drop your burdens And let dawning light caress your face.

Through the eyes of a friend Who has beheld your truth.

You hold a vision that is yet Unsteady on its feet Amidst rushing lines of traffic The clicks and taps Of impassioned argument And shouts that melt Into roaring cacophony.

Remember your mischief: The gleam of mirth in your eyes The bright easy laughter The flick of your wrist That sent magic On its spiralling dance Through the ethers.

You stand on the edge of A bridge unbuilt But even so…

Remember your loving heart.

Let it rise. Inhale a fresh breeze And see yourself

Drop your burdens And watch love unfurl (fragile, yet hopeful) Like a flower Kissed by morning dew.

8 2 Hugs n’ Kisses FATHERS OF THE FUTURE.

by Alison McEvoy

As an inborn idealist, the ideas drawer in my mind is full of the ways and means that go with all kinds of words. When it comes to the concept of Fatherhood, I had crystal clear ideas Some were borne of experience and many more of hope; hope for my generation of men - one of whom is now father to my son - and of the generation to come – one of whom is my own son. The Father I would stand next to as Mother would be an active presence, emotionally attuned to his family. A man balanced enough in his feminine aspect to value, and extend to his family the benefit of, his own innate softness, intuitiveness and lovingkindness. On the other hand, a protective presence, unafraid to send the world, and anything or anyone in it, running who would do harm to his family. When I saw my son and his father in action, however, I saw an attunement and a tenderness the likes of which I could not have imagined; hugs, kisses, impromptu massages, songs and games, a clear knowing of when his son is tired, hungry, frustrated, wants “something cosy” and even what kind of food he wants. I could not have imagined it better. My ideas drawer was simply too small and unequipped to develop an accurate blueprint for the largeness of this real life father and son.

“I saw an attunement and a tenderness the likes of which I could not have imagined.”

spirituality in the city ‘WHAT DOES SOVEREIGNTY MEAN TO YOU?’

Antoinette Begg I think everyone can agree that freedom is important. Experiencing a sense of self-ownership, and having control of one’s own body and decisions, is empowering for the individual. Specifically, the right to bodily autonomy has become increasing important to our society in recent years. I find this really heartening and I hope we can continue to make progress in this regard. As a community worker though, I feel self-sovereignty shouldn’t overshadow the rich resource that is our interconnectedness and sense of community. There is a fine balance to be found between our own individual freedoms and our well-being as a community. It may sound a little cliche but no (wo)man truly is ‘an island’

Stephanie Rousseau The first thing that comes to mind when I think of sovereignty is how willing we humans are to take away the sovereignty of others, whilst valuing it so highly for ourselves. In my work with dogs, I meet a lot of people who want to exert greater control over their dogs, to train them to respond unquestioningly to their owners ‘commands’. It’s comparatively rare that I meet people who want their dogs to have sovereignty – to think for themselves, to have self-determination, or to fulfil their potential! My wish would be that we humans could value the sovereignty of all animals, not just the human ones. happyofficedogs.com

Darren McKenna In a world where we as a people have become so greatly divided, sovereignty has never been so apt. Above all else, sovereignty to me means equality and respect for all. Every human should enter this world with the same basic rights, to be born equal and treated with respect. Over time we as a people have lost sight of this due to continuous divides driven between each other over the relentless attainment of power. At principal, the idea of sovereignty is an absolute and perpetual agreement among people to protect and and unite us from indifference led by one governing body. In turn, we are to respect the beliefs within our own as well as other governing bodies. It is important to remember that once we remove all rules, borders and beliefs, at our core, we are all human and so all the same. colliderstudios.com

Imelda McLoughlin Sovereignty means: 1. Freedom of speech, freedom of choice, the freedom to watch and read what I want, and to move freely, etc. My own free will. 2. My right to be who I am, to put what I want into or onto my own own body. The right to make choices for my own family and to have that sovereignty over my children until they become of age to govern their own selves. I am the one who has the Power over myself. I am an individual who has the right to govern herself. I am my own Sovereign, with power over my own body , my own free will to be the best version of myself I can be and to pass that down to my children, and their children.

Tommaso Sguanci Sovereignty is a word that I do not cherish. It comes from the Latin “superanus” (sovereign) that means “above”. It indicates a person who has power over people and a piece of land. It is synonymous of “monarch”. It used in many different ways, and also in a figurative way, to say that someone has power over something (oneself, one’s emotions, other people, a situation, etc.). It carries the sense of supremacy over someone or something else. I think that we should delete it from our vocabulary and use more adequate terms to indicate the position of being in control of something. Nobody is ‘over’ anyone else. Some of us simply have some roles that we take on for the sake of a responsibility that we have embraced at the moment of our assignment. Words have an incredible power and they can affect our subconscious when we use them, especially in an improper way.

Christos Salaforis When I think of the word sovereignty, I consider the context in which it is being used – a sovereign state is not necessarily the same as a sovereign individual. The idea of sovereignty when it comes to a governing state can sometimes wrap society in the subconscious shackles of protection under the guise of ‘safety’. Spiritual sovereignty is imperative right now. This being the respect and understanding of all world views in play amongst society’s diverse idealities, without the need to interfere with contrasting world views that may not resonate. Maybe it is time to give birth to a decentralised model of spiritual sovereignty that mirrors the synergy of the natural world. Where all individuals are free to choose what is right and true for them without infringing on the lives of others. If something is to reign supreme, let it be freedom; let it be love. facebook.com/csalaforis

POSITIVE PARENTING

sovereignty and special time HONOURING YOUR CHILD’S CHOICES.

by Anna Cole

12

Sovereignty synonyms: jurisdiction · supremacy · dominion · domination · sway · predominance · authority · control It’s a big and wonderful word, sovereignty, and one that is more and more on people’s lips. So I was curious to realise that each of the tools I teach as a Hand in Hand Parenting instructor relate to giving sovereignty to the child, in ways that are safe for both the adult and child, and don’t turn the adult-child relationship permanently upside down. Most adults struggle at times to ‘be’ in our ‘adult’. In mainstream culture, we’ve mainly lost rites of passage for becoming an adult, and many of us had parents who carried both cultural and psychological wounds that led them to act from their own ‘adaptive child’ place. Our ‘adaptive inner child’ is the part of us that dealt with the trauma of our childhoods and figured out how to adapt in order to protect ourselves and survive. Terry Real, internationally renowned family therapist and author, who – along with Pia Melody – coined the term ‘adaptive inner child’, explains that most of us are paddling hard underwater like the proverbial swan, to stay out of our ‘adaptive child’ long enough to make grown-up relationships work. Most of us need skills and support to learn how to ‘adult’ well, be a parent, and give our real ‘outer’ children sovereignty – over their emotions, their actions, their words – without letting our own inner child run the parenting show. Many of us were raised in the old paradigm of authoritarian parenting. In reaction to this, some of us can seek to provide sovereignty to our children as much as possible, and this can easily leak into permissiveness. This becomes frightening for a child. It’s scary for a child not to know where the edges or the limits are, or to feel like they are more in charge than their parent. It is our sacred duty as an adult and as a parent to set loving limits and have response-ability for the rhythm and structure of our parenting days. So how do we grant sovereignty to this little human we are living with, without losing track of our responsibility as parents? How do we respect deeply our

children’s choices, their emotions, their desires?

“Allowing your child their sovereignty enables them to move out of behavioural or emotional ruts.” Here’s a practical answer: I invite you to try the tool of Special Time. Set aside some one-on-one time when you won’t multi-task (e.g. check your phone, pick up lint from the rug while playing Lego with your child), specify the time-frame for yourself and your child – anything from 5 minutes to 1 hour (hint: it gets super hard to do this fully for more than around 30 minutes, to be honest) – and bring that magic ingredient of delight to your child. The message and the intention from the parent, is: ‘What do you want to play? I’ll play anything you want to play, let’s go!’ Give it a try. Set the timer and bring your full attention to following your child’s sovereign desires. Sure, it’s important to have a few provisos around safety, so if your child chooses to jump off the garage roof for Special Time, you might have to honour their desire to jump from up high, while finding a soft landing: ‘Yay, jumping sounds great! How about we get all the pillows and cushions off the sofa and bed and pile them up at the bottom of the stairs? Maybe we can grab a mattress off the bed too?’ The delight and the wish is honoured, with some safety considerations. Try just 10 minutes of Special Time next time you are with the child you care for, and notice what goes on inside yourself when you offer this time. Do you want to lead in some way? Do you want to add things into the play other than that which

the child has chosen, in their sovereignty, to play? Has your child suggested a game of chase, and you become the ‘monster’ without invitation? Do you want to point out the ’S’ shape they are making, for example, while they are drawing, because you are worrying about when they will get better at writing? Lawrence Cohen (a great play therapist and clinical psychologist who works alongside Hand in Hand Parenting) remembers that the thing his daughter – then a pre-teen – wanted to play during Special Time, was Barbie. Barbie! Ugh! He was a feminist, who didn’t like Barbie. To cede his daughter her sovereignty, he had to bite back his own judgements. Had he been unwilling to accept playing Barbie during that time, he would have communicated to his daughter: ‘Your choices are dumb. They are not worthwhile and I know better than you.’ Trust me, really tuning in to the sovereignty of our child’s wishes can be challenging. Interestingly, when Larry got into the game and delighted in his daughter’s choices, rather than judging them, the game shifted from Barbies getting dressed and getting married, to Barbies becoming adventure heroes and throwing themselves out of imaginary aeroplanes. Allowing your child their sovereignty during Special Time enables them to move out of behavioural or emotional ruts. As we use our warm, delighted, non-judgemental attention in Special Time, we find the flow of life and move with it.

POSITI V E AT TR ACTION

power YOU ARE IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT OF YOUR LIFE. by Judith McAdam

Your intuition is like your internal navigation system: when you listen to the directions you will get to your destination every time. When you go against it, you will end up in the rough. Handing over your personal power, free will, or personal sovereignty is never wise. This generally happens when you are in fear, lacking in self-worth, suffering from low self-esteem or lack of confidence. These are all signs of a blocked Solar Plexus chakra or energy centre in your body. Sovereignty means supreme authority over someone or something. It is a powerful word and much like everything in the Universe, it can be used positively or negatively. Through generations of societal conditioning and on a macrocosmic level, we hand our power over to gods, queens, kings, rulers, nations, and States. On a microcosmic level, we have a tendency to hand our power over to our mothers, fathers, partners, religious leaders, and ‘people in authority’. But be warned: following someone else’s route can lead you to concentrate on someone else’s journey, someone else’s fear, and someone else’s opinions. This will bring you further and further away from being aligned with the version of you

“Become intrinsically aware of your right to determine your own direction and destiny in this lifetime.”

14

that is limitless. When you create your reality from a place of alignment, you are at your most powerful. When you are not aligned, your internal navigation system or intuition is always telling you to stop, divert, and go back. Opening your Solar Plexus chakra, standing in your own power, and regaining your personal sovereignty has a price, and that price is personal responsibility. As you ‘Open Powerful Doors Within’* and become more self-assured, confident, and strong, you also take ownership of your own reactions and actions. You start to create your own reality in more conscious awareness. As momentum gathers around your newfound inner power, you become intrinsically aware of your right to determine your own direction and destiny in this lifetime. In effect, you are in the driving seat of your life. You have choice. You have free will. You make your own decision as to who is in the driver’s seat of your life!

child is careering down the motorway, bump after bump after bump. The child is out of control. Again, and again, the child swerves in the nick of time to avoid disaster after disaster. Then your child heads for the hard shoulder and starts plowing through the grass. Now imagine sitting next to the child in the driver’s seat. Gently put your arm around the child and comfort them. Your inner child is completely overwhelmed at being in the driving seat of your life. As you hold the child with one arm, lightly take the wheel with the other hand. Lovingly explain that you are in control now. At first, this little one will be afraid to give you the wheel, but eventually, the child will be delighted to be free to play. Say to yourself, ‘I am now in the driver’s seat of my life. I am powerful. I am strong and I am confident. My intuition guides me at all times. I am safe, I am secure, my future is secure.’

the sacred

wheel DISCOVERING OUR INNER SOVEREIGNTY.

by Amanda Sophia

16

Our inner sovereignty beckons to not only be discovered, but to be embraced. The journey inward is not to be feared. We often shy from the shadows, but neglect to realise that by doing so, we are keeping ourselves from the hope of light. What if we dared to seek out and heal what has been needlessly broken? As a Celtic Priestess, I have discovered that my intentionality of seeking holistic healing has been invaluable.

The Celtic Wheel & Sovereignty My approach to life is to live in close harmony to nature and use the Celtic Wheel of the Year as a beautiful guide and invitation to inner work. Each twelvemonth period of the Celtic Wheel is split into eight segments. During the winter solstice, we are drawn to pause and do some deep inquiry to ensure we are on our path. Then, spring invites us to allow our greatest selves to emerge. The beauty is that the Celtic Wheel can be used at any point of time in your life. You could be in the height of summer, yet need to call upon your own inner solstice to make sense of certain experiences in your life again. Nature beckons us to look at life in a more cyclical manner versus linear.

A Journey to Sovereignty Sovereignty is defined as “supreme power or authority”. These aren’t likely terms that you would use to describe your life journey. However, if you choose to follow the Celtic Wheel, you will undoubtedly experience and press into healing of grand proportions. Join me on this journey of inner work with the guidance of nature and ancient wisdom. May you realise your divine sovereignty and fully embrace the power within. Beginning at Winter Solstice (20-22 December), the shortest day and the longest night of the year, you must go inward and let yourself reflect and dream.

You may ask yourself what things beyond your physical senses have been wanting to be heard? How will you learn to be still and listen? Shortly after the winter solstice, Imbolc (5 February) brings purification, growth, power, awakening, and inspiration. This presents you with a beautiful opportunity to acknowledge your inner knowing and set intentions for the year ahead. Reflect on Imbolc and journey inward to ask what lies dormant and what you hope to enhance. What do you need to leave behind?

“Nature beckons us to look at life in a more cyclical manner versus linear.” Spring Equinox (20-23 March) is when nature gives birth and comes alive. The spring equinox’s message is one of emergence, rebirth, renewal, and the awakening of the inner child. Use this time of renewal to ask what needs grounding in your life right now? Where could you create more balance in your life? Beltane (1 May) brings a reminder to honour your inner world by embracing sensuality, fertility, light, direction, and being a shining one. Reflect on Beltane and determine what action can you take today to step more fully into your joy. How can you reclaim your inner sensuality more deeply in your life? Summer Solstice (20-22 June) is the turning point of the year, when the sun shines brightest. The Summer Solstice brings energy, inspiration, outwardness, manifestation, and transformation. With the sun on your face, ask yourself where in your life you are forcing things to happen. Can you shift to inviting divine flow? Lughnasadh (1 August) marks the start of harvest. Lughnasadh invites us to reap what we have sown and to see the fruits of our labour and love. Lughnasadh opens an opportunity for you to assess

what is not thriving or working in your life. Reflect on what you may release. Are there areas in your life where you are overgiving and can create more balance? Autumn Equinox (20-23 September) is a time for reflecting on what one has gained and lost over the years. The message of the autumn equinox is letting go, reflecting, pausing, and hibernating. Autumn Equinox is an invitation to sovereignty. Ask yourself what seeds sown earlier this year produced well. Why or why not? What will you do differently next season? Samhain (31 October) marks the start of the descent into the darkness and is the place we must willingly turn towards so we can truly discover who we are. The message of Samhain is to awaken your inner wild woman. As you awaken your inner shadow priestess, ask her what parts of yourself do you turn away from? What needs the most attention and love?

A Blessing of Sovereignty With inner healing comes inner peace. Reclaiming your full right to be authentically yourself requires you to take the first step. As you utilise the Celtic wheel to press into the darkness so that you can emerge renewed, you will find that nature guides you in a way that only she can. Beloved, may the journey to selfempowerment be more rewarding to you than there are stars in the night sky. May you know intimately that you are powerful. The truth of ancient wisdom lies between your very breasts. Reflect on what has been: the lessons to be learned. Dream about what can be. Priestess, it is time to embrace and celebrate your body, mind, and spirit. May you know that you are a lovely creation, capable and worthy of love.

MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT. by Sandy Newbigging

“...make your ‘inner world’ a peaceful, kinder and safer place to be.”

18

What can we do to feel more empowered in the face of world events? How can we be less affected by the spectrum of economic, political, environmental and societal events? How can we move from being frustrated, upset or worried, to making a more peaceful and positive impact within the world? It is easy to look out at the world and feel powerless with regard to our ability to make any worthwhile impact. It can all seem way too big a task to undertake, or appear outside our control and in the hands of others. However, if we remain paralysed by our perceived powerlessness, then the world may end up being governed and shaped by the minority of people to whom we passively give our power. If these people aren’t aware enough to bring about positive changes based on love, freedom and the collective good, then we may end up left to deal with the ramifications of our reluctance to step up, wake up and bring about a better world.

AN EMPOWERING SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE Many spiritual teachers have said the ‘outer reflects the inner’ and ‘as above, so below’. As a result, the world is a reflection of the individuals who populate it. But what does this really mean, in a practical reality? Greed, unworthiness or lack within the individual may be reflected as more debt and poverty in the world. The absence of unconditional love within the individual may be mirrored back by hate in the headlines. Unresolved fears within the individual can lead to the world being such a scary place that millions feel safer staying home. This long-standing spiritual principle can be linked to many problems we witness and, with this in mind, to be part of the solution, it makes sense therefore that we do the ‘inner work’ - so that a more loving, peaceful and safe world is reflected back. Before proceeding, let me be clear. None of this has anything to do with blame, guilt or carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It’s about reclaiming our power to make a positive difference and as Mahatma Gandhi once encouraged, ‘be the change you want to see in the world.’

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO HELP THE WORLD First things first, set the intention to make peace your priority and kindness your personal code of conduct. The goal is to

make your ‘inner world’ a peaceful, kinder and safer place to be. Until I began actively living aligned with this intention, I had totally underestimated how much internal conflict and unkindness had been habitually taking place. I would be very hard on myself, super judgemental, put myself under immense pressure to always be better, achieve more and live up to almost self-violent near-impossible standards. I quickly started to see how often I made certain things more important than my inner peace, such as being on time, being right, or being liked. I would lose my peace if I was ever accidentally running late. I would have imaginary arguments, often ending up tense and annoyed. I would get upset and hurt whenever someone somewhere decided they didn’t like me. It was exhausting and, more importantly, it became obvious to me that if the outer does reflect the inner, then my personal contribution wasn’t necessarily helping towards a more peaceful and loving world. Beyond the intentions of prioritising peace and being kind, I believe we can all make simple changes that can enhance our positive impact upon the wider world. Some practical examples: meditate every day. Get out in nature as often as possible. Listen to more soothing music and select more heart-lifting movies. Take time to cook good meals, not as a means to an end but as a nourishing, self-loving act. If these suggestions sound too superficial for your taste, then other ways to ‘do the inner work’ may include being willing to let go of any guilt, grief and grudges - by forgiving yourself and others for anything that’s happened in your life so far. Since making peace my priority and kindness my personal code of conduct, my inner world has become a more pleasant place to be. I warmly invite you to do the same. Dedicate your days to cultivating an inner climate of personal peace, power and positivity. In doing so, I believe we can all raise our vibration, access higher levels of consciousness and play our part in a healthier, happier and freer world.

rest and

THE BLISS OF CREACON. by Paul Congdon Creacon Wellness Retreat was set up by its founder Derek O’Neill and his late wife Linda in 2014. I attended the launch of their ‘Food is Medicine’ programme back in 2016, and the sense I got was of a space finding its way in the world. Not so now: I recently returned, and boy, has she grown! On arrival, I felt a sense of groundedness oozing from the walls and the surrounding lands. Creacon knows her place in the world. This is a tribute to Derek and his truly wonderful staff – but really, I should say Creacon family, because that is the sense you get here. It’s a respite and a refuge for people to come and rest their weary souls. When you arrive at the reception, you are greeted by Salvo, a man with a wealth of experience in the service industry. His energy and gentlemanly manner means you are looked after exceptionally well and in a non-intrusive way, giving you the space you need. The rooms are of the quality you would see in a 5 star hotel, with amazing attention to detail – and indeed, health, with Kangen water supplied in every room, including your shower. I left my bags in my room and headed to the restaurant for my tasty, healthy evening meal. I love the combination of taste and health when it’s just right, and here they achieve that

balance in spades, with chef Gaetano being a whizz kid in the kitchen.

“There is an atmosphere of openness, spirituality and a recognition of all paths leading to the same place.” After dinner, I retired to the lounge and got to meet some of the beautiful staff and residents: Sandra Grey Wolf, of Native American origin; Marcela; and Suzanne. Each of the ladies are resident therapists, and they offer treatments such as healing, massage and life readings based on the Native American tradition of throwing the bones. The meditation and yoga hall has a quirky library behind the bar area with books tucked into nooks and crannies, and you can explore a wide range of books on ancient spiritual paths and Vedic traditions, as well as modern day spiritual teachers like Louise Hay. Start your day with a yoga class, followed by a breakfast or juice (they have a juice cleanse package) if you feel like a detox. The surrounding grounds are lovely for a walk and there’s also an infrared sauna for some further detoxing and

relaxation. Not so far away – if you fancy hanging out with some wild trees in nature – is the JFK arboretum, in which I loved getting my afternoon walk. There is plenty on offer at Creacon all year round, with courses, treatments and retreats. I loved the feeling each evening of heading to the restaurant and sampling the health goodies, of which there are many. The menu is designed with Ayurveda in mind, and there is something for everyone, veggies and meat eaters alike. If you fancy a vino, that’s on offer too … and the wines are very well chosen, with an organic and biodynamic selection. There is an atmosphere of openness, spirituality and a recognition of all paths leading to the same place. In the evening, you can grab a good book and sit by the fire or hang out with the other residents for the chats. Creacon is like our own homegrown ashram, a nod to eastern philosophies. If you feel the need for a break, Creacon is here to rest your weary soul. Tell them we sent you.

mas sajady wisdom from near death TRUE FREEDOM BEGINS WHEN STRIVING ENDS. by Aisling Cronin Aisling Cronin Mas Sajady is a transformational coach and founder of Exponential Intelligence®, MediMorphosis® and Medihealing®. These modalities have helped thousands of people around the world to break through challenging situations and achieve success and fulfilment. As a child, Mas attempted to conceal his highly intuitive nature so he could fit in. It took two near-death experiences for him to awaken and embrace his abilities. The first of these experiences occurred in his early twenties. After this, his intuitive abilities were heightened and he was able to sense future events and the internal issues of others. However, these abilities subsided as family life took over. His children and his successful web development business took centre stage during this era of his life. Mas’ second near-death experience occurred in 2006. This one opened him up to even higher levels of awareness. Nowadays, he acts as a conduit for pure healing energy, helping people to experience fundamental shifts in their lives. We recently interviewed him on the topic of sovereignty, and how we can embody a greater sense of freedom within our lives.

How would you describe sovereignty? Sovereignty is an interesting question. If you look at the course of human history, you’ll see that the masses of humanity have never really been free. They’ve always been fighting for their freedom, or rebelling against oppression of some kind. So whether you look at it from that big level – nation states, countries, or religions – or from the level of the individual person, you can see that people have always been striving to free themselves in some way.

Freedom is a difficult concept to define, because there are so many layers to it, and it can mean different things to different people. The majority of humans are striving for financial freedom, as an example … but then those who do earn a lot of money aren’t always free, in their own minds, from the fear of lack, or the fear of losing what they have. Yes, the first task is to define what freedom means to you. People who make a lot of money are often driven by a feeling of needing to prove to the world that they can be somebody. Perhaps they were bullied in school, and were very driven to succeed as a result … but are they free from that ‘bully’ years later? A lot of people gravitate towards money because of what

we’ve idealised money to be … and other individuals would gravitate towards knowledge, or spirituality. The state of striving – always thinking they have to work hard to get to another state of being – keeps them thinking that they will never truly be free until they achieve a goal … until they are different from how they are right now.

Have you often seen that striving mentality emerge in your work? Yes – as Exponential Intelligence® has become more and more popular, I’ve observed many people operating from a position of believing they’re not enough at point A, so they must strive to get to point B. My work is about helping people to understand themselves as a complete being: helping people to unite their physical self with their timeless self, so there is no longer a rigid differentiation between the two. The good news is that with the current chaos going on – financial systems breaking down, for example – this gives us the opportunity to break away from the things that have bound us, and find our freedom. POSITIVE TANTR A

the low roar & whisper of

your body A LOVER’S GUIDE TO SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY. by Dawn Cartwright

“Sovereignty is amplified in relationship. Each partner has sovereignty over themselves, their bodies and their minds.”

Stronger than the morals and expectations imposed upon them, obedient only to the low roar and whisper of their bodies (and the simple ecstasies of their senses). They are men and women unto themselves. ~ Dawn Cartwright ~ What does it mean to be true to oneself ? To be sovereign of heart, body and sex? How do we become clear about who we are as lovers and shower our lives with that truth?

First Things First: What Is Sovereignty, Exactly? The concept of sovereignty was first introduced between AD 211 and 222 by Roman jurist, Ulpian, one of the great legal minds of the time. Sovereignty, in this case, meant absolute power of the emperor. Which translates to: there is one power and everyone must live in accordance with that power. More than 1,500 years later the term was redefined. In 1859, classical liberal John Stuart Mill, stated, “over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.” This means that every individual has the right to live in accordance with their own true power. Everyone has the power to be and live and think as they wish. You’re probably wondering . . . how does this translate to sexuality?

You are the Emperor of Your Sexual Experience To live in accordance with our own sexual power is to be sexually sovereign. This brings us two questions. How do we get in touch with the sovereign sexual beings we are? And how do we become the emperor of our own sexual experience? 1. Create the time and space to be silent at least once each day. We all have busy lives and we are constantly taking in information. We are flooded with others’ beliefs and ideas all day long. Turn your attention inward and let go of doing. Be silent in your room, in the bath, by the fire, in the forest, by a river. No distractions.

Just be. Take some time to be with the sovereign being in you. 2. Listen to your body and notice how it feels. Take a few breaths and settle into the place where you’re sitting. Scan your body for sensation. What do you notice? What do you feel? What does your body want, really want, right now? To stretch? Take a walk? Do some yoga? Have a bath? Make some tea? Take a few minutes, now, to tune in, then give your body what it desires. Go on . . . I’ll wait . . .

expressing ourselves freely in bed. We lose our uniqueness. To stay awake and alive and true to ourselves, to continuously bring our best selves to our lover, it is helpful to continue to establish, every day, who we are as individuals. Knowing who we are and what we need makes it possible for us to create magnetism and attraction with our lover. To feel excited and curious about their sexual feelings, without losing ourselves. Sit silently, listen to your body, awaken your arousal and meet the emperor within each day.

3. Awaken your arousal. All it takes is a little attention and some willingness to awaken the sexual fire. Relax your face, your lower belly and your inner thighs. Bring your attention to your sex. Feel the warmth, the buzz, the subtle feelings of arousal? Relax a bit more. Create space around those feelings and they’ll intensify . . . I promise. Open to your sexual energy. How does it feel?

4. Express yourself. All the way back in Roman times and fast forward to today, there’s really no way to experience sovereignty in relationship without expression. Now, this expression can be verbal . . . sharing the details of your inner journey in sex with your lover . . . or sensory . . . moving your body just the way you like to, to feel closer and more electric with the one you love.

4. Meet the emperor within you. When you create time and space for silence, when you release outside beliefs and tune in to your body, when you meet your sexual arousal and embrace what you feel, you have discovered your sexual sovereignty. Your unique sexual energy. The emperor within. The starting point for sexual exploration.

5. Be curious and encouraging. Your partner is a unique being with unique desires and needs. This is their sovereignty. You are also unique and sovereign. The most beautiful aspect of sovereignty is to be one and together. To choose, from a sovereign seat, to explore the uniqueness your partner brings. Explore new sensations and experiences. Share new feelings and expressions. The key is to choose. Choose to go beyond what’s familiar. Choose to explore. Choose to be honest. Choose to say yes, and say no. Choose to trust the low roar and whisper of each other’s bodies.

A Lover’s Guide to Sexual Sovereignty Sovereignty is amplified in relationship. Each partner has sovereignty over themselves, their bodies and their minds. They are two complete human beings choosing to bring their fullest selves to their sexual experience, rather than feelings of obligation or disappointment. 1. Nourish your inner lover. It’s natural for two lovers to entrain with one another over time. We give up our desires and stop

teal swan AWAKEN AND INTEGRATE.

by Aisling Cronin Interview by Paul Congdon

Teal Swan is a spiritual teacher and author who is widely known as The Spiritual Catalyst. Teal is renowned by spiritual seekers around the world for her popular video teachings on subjects like healing, human relationships, and raising the frequency of our minds and bodies. She was a guest at one of our live gatherings back in 2016, and we were thrilled to have her back at Positive Nights recently, via a Zoom event. She had a wealth of information to share about how we can navigate current circumstances. Paul: So I believe you’ve written a new book recently, called ‘Hunger of the Pine’. Can you tell us more about that? Teal: I decided last year that I was going to do a novel for the first time. It’s book number six, and it was an opportunity to do two things. Firstly, I wanted to showcase my writing ability. When you’re writing a selfhelp book, you’re basically using words to explain things. It’s not the same as descriptive writing. I wanted to put myself on the map as a writer, not just someone who writes books! The second thing was, I wanted to use the characters in my book to put people into the perspective of youth homelessness. That cause is very close to my heart. Paul: I would love to hear about your take on the current situation. Despite the challenges, a lot of people are using this time constructively: checking in with themselves, healing themselves, really being able to experience great breakthroughs … but then the restrictions clash against our free natures. How do you see it?

Teal: I think the ability to find good in this situation is very dependent on the economic situation people find themselves in. I’m acutely aware that for us to even sit here, having this conversation, is a luxury. Human consciousness is building up to meet with its shadow. People don’t necessarily like to hear that, because they say, ‘if you’re focusing on that, you’re creating it’, but sometimes, a huge overhaul is required for people to wake up and begin to live in alignment with their best interests and the best interests of those around them. Paul: I remember during our live event a number of years ago, you made the point that we should make peace with our shadow. That’s where the gold is. Teal: Yes, that is what I’m hoping people will do! Anything you see out in the world that you don’t like … use that as an opportunity to see that thing inside yourself. Look at partisanship, for example. We see a lot of separation going on out in the world, and social media is feeding that in a huge way. When we think someone is shut down and not listening, it gives us an opportunity to understand where we are not listening. Where have we become locked down in our thinking and beliefs? Let’s seek to understand those around us, rather than convert or control them. We live in a consensus reality and we chose that consensus reality for a very specific reason. We wanted to create social awareness and integration.

Paul: Let’s talk a bit about the Divine and the human aspects of ourselves. There used to be a sense in New Age circles, especially at the beginning, that people were trying to transcend the human and enter the Divine … and now, I’m seeing a lot more teachers say, no, you’re not going to get away with that so much anymore! Now, it’s very much about integrating the human and the Divine.

“We live in a consensus reality and we chose that consensus reality for a very specific reason” Teal: It’s funny, because here on Earth, we tend to be very focused on how to escape – all of our attention is going out to the ethers – whereas in the non-physical realms, all of the attention is focused on us. This is where the juicy stuff is happening! This physical time-space reality is where nonphysical energy is allowed to actualise, and allowed to become physically manifested. The owning of free will can lead to so many different creations in the physical. I don’t think people are regarding this in an artistic enough way. You are an art form that was created for a very specific reason. You have a purpose … and if you don’t carry out that purpose, it is kind of a tragedy. When we experience negativity, we tend to tell ourselves all kinds of things about our physical existence – acting like it’s some kind of punishment that we need to endure, until we can be non-physical

27 again. But that’s not the way the nonphysical dimensions see us. They see our reality as an art piece. It’s like painting on a canvas. With every brush stroke, you see and know more about yourself. It’s a very exciting thing to experience, especially when you’re consciously choosing to do so: meaning that you’re 100% committed to being physical. If you have non-physical awareness, that just enhances your ability to be more actualised here in the physical. Post awakening, you have less of a resistance to everything, and more of an understanding of everything, and this decreases your pain. Paul: That is beautifully expressed, thank you. Moving on to talk about a recent video you made on cancel culture … do you have anything more to say on that subject today? Teal: In history, it’s been a necessary skill for us to settle conflicts with one another. In this era of modern technology, we don’t feel that so much anymore. It’s tempting, when someone does something or says something that conflicts with our worldview, to just get rid of them entirely. We don’t have the sense that achieving consensus is a necessity anymore. It’s kind of like the way online dating has affected relationships. Why try to make it work with one person, when we have many other prospects available? Paul: What is the best advice you can give to people at this time?

Our reality is an art piece. With every brush stroke, you see and know more about yourself.

Teal: The people who will fare best are those who are adaptable. Right now is not the time to be super-rooted in anything. It’s a time to be very, very adaptable, and diversify everything. It’s a time to look at areas where we feel powerless, and create more empowerment within those areas. Develop skills that will serve you. tealswan.com

liberating our minds WE INTERVIEW THE MAKERS OF THRIVE.

Interviewer: Paul Congdon Author: Aisling Cronin THRIVE is a global movement that aims to inform and inspire people to create a better world. This movement began after the release of ‘THRIVE I: What on Earth Will it Take?’ back in 2011. In this documentary, the filmmakers Foster Gamble and Kimberly Carter Gamble put forward their research into the power structures that inform how human society currently operates. They also shared compelling scientific and spiritual evidence that demonstrated how we are part of an infinitely alive, interconnected cosmos. Kimberly and Foster believe this web of interconnectivity is organised according to knowable energy dynamics, and that aligning with this patterning will allow us to access its infinite potential for transformation. They emphasise that on a practical level, this understanding of our inherent oneness could bring about widespread changes in how we relate to each other. ‘THRIVE II: This is What it Takes’ has recently been released. This follow-up

documentary brings viewers behind the scenes with the people and inventions that have the power to transform life for all inhabitants of our planet. It aims to unpack the strategies, the science, and the principles that underlie some potent solutions in energy, health, consciousness, and non-coercive self-organising. By inspiring trans-political, grassroots, decentralised solutions, ‘THRIVE II’ puts forward practical tools for reclaiming authority over our own lives and communities. ‘THRIVE II’ unveils an emerging coherent theory of the “Unified Field” and all that this implies. Foster and Kimberly’s vision is simple: as the title suggests, they want to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We marked the release of ‘THRIVE II’ by interviewing them both during a special Positive Nights event, to learn more about the inspiration behind their documentaries and the wider movement.

“Foster and Kimberly’s vision is simple: to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.” Paul: What is giving you the greatest excitement at this time, in relation to some of the concepts that THRIVE I and THRIVE II explored? Kimberly: For me, it is the deepening awareness of what it means to be an energetic being interacting with the world around me. My grounding point – which guided all of my decisions and words during both movies – was the human aspect of what we were exploring. I constantly came back

29

“When you give humans enough of the truth, they will take creative, constructive action beyond anything that can be imagined.”

to the question: ‘how can this information change people’s lives?’ Foster: I feel more confident than ever that humans can solve the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into! Though it’s not easy, and though there’s a lot to be done, I do have immense hope. The solutions are much more simple and more coherent than we may realise. I was at lunch recently with one of the scientists featured in the movie, who explained that if we can create a still point between two perfectly aligned waves of energy, this emanation could unlock immense healing potentials within the surrounding cells. This generation of a still point could unlock free energy technology. This is what we’ve heard again and again and again. Paul: This leads me into a question on one of the fascinating concepts you explored in THRIVE: the torus field. You mentioned

the work of Nassim Haramein, in particular – what is it that draws you to his work? Foster: Nassim and I have been friends for twenty years. When I first met him, he was literally travelling in a van, trying to spread the word about his inventions and ideas. He was one event from giving up, because no one understood what he was talking about. A friend of mine knew him, and because our work was so similar, he told me, “you have to go to this event.” When I heard Nassim talk, I had hairs standing up on the back of my neck. We are especially excited about Nassim’s resonator – THRIVE II is the first time he has revealed it publicly. The aim of this resonator is to tap into the power of nature by creating a natural black hole, which can generate ongoing energy ‘packets’ from the universe.

Paul: What changed for you both after you made THRIVE I back in 2011? What was the most amazing thing you experienced as a result? Kimberly: We got 90 million documented views, and were exposed to many different people. I could sense that we were really fulfilling a need, which was incredible. It has been amazing to connect with people all over the world who understood what we were setting out to do. Yet with that, some slander came our way, and negative things were said about us. Personally, what changed for me in that process was that I was liberated! After trying my whole life to please people, a fearlessness emerged in me. I learned that it was far more important to respect myself, act with integrity and speak my truth – which was always intended to be helpful. I felt free to be true to myself. For me, that was hugely empowering and necessary for me to start working on

THRIVE II. The fact that the movie spread so widely showed me that if you tell your truth with integrity and intention to empower, it will spread. That’s it. Give people something true that they need, and it will spread. Foster The main thing that I got was confirmation that the vast majority of humanity is awesome! Despite what you read on the papers or see on TV, we truly are awesome. Following THRIVE I, Kimberly and I were contacted by over a thousand inventors from all over the world, saying, “thank you for having the courage to talk about this stuff.” We did hundreds of appearances related to the movie, and at every one, we met people who had created their own THRIVE solutions groups in their town or community. This led us to create the solutions hub on our website, where these small groups can see each other and share what they’re doing. There are now over 1100 of these groups, in 90 countries all over the world. When you give humans enough of the truth, they will take creative,

30

constructive action beyond anything that can be imagined. Kimberly: There is a quote I love from Martin Luther King, that says: “Those who love peace must learn to be as organised as those who love war.” Paul: What is the most empowering thing people can do right now to bring about the positive solutions explored in the movie? Foster: First, find stillness within yourself. Then, ask yourself a question that many people spend their lives avoiding. Ask, “what is my purpose? What is my reason for being here?” A purpose is more than just a goal: it’s a direction. It’s an internal compass. It feels fulfilling to you, and has both a self-discovery aspect, and a healing or sharing aspect that you bring to the world. Once you know that purpose, you can ask yourself where that purpose would be best expressed. What field are you drawn to? Science, media, economics, health? If you pick what you’re most drawn

to and most skilled with, ask yourself which issue do you want to work on? Is there one specific issue that calls you? Or do you want to work more on systemic change? The one thing I know for sure is that change is up to us. Kimberly: To me, purpose is both self-knowing and the action that goes along with it. Any information that comes through us, and feels true and good, asks us to take actions that will enable us to be most in congruence with it. Foster: Ask the question that is burning in you. Ask yourself what you want to devote your life to … and then fasten your seatbelt! During the second half of our event, attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions and interact with Foster and Kimberly directly. One person asked the very pertinent question, ‘can we ever create a new, independent flow of information, free of bias?’

Foster: That is the question of the day! We have a number of news sources we respect and trust to get to the truth of a matter, backing up their reports with facts and evidence, rather than aiming to support one particular political party or leader, or nation state. If you’re going on mainstream media, just do it to see what they are saying, but then go to other sources too, and make up your own mind.

“Ask the question that is burning in you. Ask yourself what you want to devote your life to … and then fasten your seatbelt!” Kimberly: It’s important to be discerning. Ask yourself, “what parts of this report feel true to me?” And accept that some people might have one piece of the truth, but not all of it. Foster and I have exposed ourselves to every imaginable perspective and asked “what is of value here? What is of value here?” We reach our own opinions by considering what different sources have to say, debating it with each other, asking our own hearts what feels right … and that is a very important aspect of becoming a sovereign being.

Foster: Sign up to newsletters by people whom you respect as being impartial and honest. I probably review 50 to 100 of those every day. I print out the articles that I find to be most valuable, and take from them the truth that I need. You can go through the titles of the various articles and podcasts and pick the ones that most interest you. It can save a tremendous amount of time, if you have access to a wide range of sources you respect. Another attendee posed an interesting question about transhumanism, or the act of changing the form or structure of human bodies through the addition of artificial technology and implants (such as microchips in the brain: a development which is beginning to be explored by certain research institutions and companies). We loved hearing Kimberly and Foster’s balanced and thoughtful approach to this subject. Kimberly: I would love to address this question, because it’s a subject I’m passionate about. This issue shows us how futile it is to think we’re all going to come to an agreement. Trillions of dollars and decades of research have gone into transhumanism. People in that field are very committed to it – I’ve read their books, I’ve listened to their lectures, I’ve met with them, and I’ve really tried to understand their worldview. Is efficiency of greater value than humanity, as we understand it? I think this is one of the ethical dilemmas of the times we’re in. We’re starting to hear a lot about ‘human augmentation’ – plugging your brain into a computer, potentially learning fifteen languages in ten minutes, and all these

related scenarios that are envisaged. When we think about it, we’re all somewhere along that continuum between fully supporting transhumanism, and letting our bodies operate in an organic way. For example, when you get a broken arm, do you let the bones heal naturally, or do you get a piece of metal put into your arm, if the metal is proven to be stronger? There are a lot of people who would be in favour of transhumanism to some extent – some would even go as far as altering human DNA – whereas others would say, “no, I accept life cycles. It’s okay for me to age. It’s okay for me to die. I just want to be more healthy as I go through my life.” And I don’t believe we’re all gong to come to an agreement. So this is where the non-aggression principle comes in. How do we coexist in such a way that we’re allowed freedom of choice? I do have hope in the principle of non-aggression. I think we can abide by this principle that allows us to manifest in accordance with our beliefs and values, whilst not seeking to impose those beliefs and values on one another. We may have a big job ahead of us, but I do believe humanity can do that! Foster: Every human we’ve ever met agrees with this one simple thing: no one wants to be violated against their will. I was so excited when we found this one simple principle that every human can align around. It’s as simple as that!

food, sovereignty

and local resilience CHANGING HOW YOU EAT, CHANGES THE WORLD. by Davie Philip Food is one of our essential needs. We can and should restore sovereignty in our food system. Most of us eat unconsciously: completely unaware of where and how our food is produced. The global food system we rely on has a high social and environmental cost, and questionable ethics. The dominance of food that is subsidised, highly processed and packaged contributes to an increase in diet-related illnesses, job losses and deteriorating ecosystems. Michael Pollan, in his best selling book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, emphasises that ‘eating is an agricultural act,’ as Wendell Berry famously said. It is an ecological act, and a political act, too. Though much has been done to obscure this simple fact, how and what we eat determines to a great extent the use we make of the world - and what is to become of it. The term ‘Food Sovereignty’ was coined by Via Campesina, the international movement of small farmers and landless peoples, as a response to the dominance of corporate-controlled agriculture. It is the principle that we have the fundamental right to choose the food we consume, as well as where and how it is produced and distributed. As the pandemic collides with inequality and the climate emergency, it is clear we need to change our

34

relationship to food and agriculture. Fresh approaches to building resilient local food economies are emerging. Many people are now growing more of their own food; allotments and community gardens are gaining popularity, and more farmers are beginning to restore biodiversity through regenerative agriculture practices. Innovative communities and cooperative social enterprises are experimenting with new food distribution approaches, and shortening supply chains by building resilient food webs of small food producers, distributors, retailers, food hubs, food co-ops, buying clubs and community-supported farms. The Open Food Network (OFN) is a global response to the increasing sense that there is something fundamentally unsustainable with our food system. Already established in 12 countries, most recently in Ireland, OFN is an open source, community owned, online market platform. This enables food producers to sell directly through virtual shops and markets, and gives people access to more secure and fair ways to source their food directly from local growers and producers. OFN was a game changer for local economies before the pandemic. During the early lockdowns, it saw a huge increase in users, and in the new reality of physical distancing and rolling lockdowns it has emerged as a lifeline for small producers, farmers and local communities.

Food sovereignty is really an invitation to: develop a shared vision and culture that prioritises our health and well-being; create systems that enable us to support farmers growing food in a regenerative way; and develop exchange mechanism and regional economies that will strengthen our resilience to the unpredictability of global markets and a rapidly changing climate. We will be better able to cope with future disruptions if we take control of the processes and infrastructure involved in feeding ourselves. By engaging in local food systems, we can eat in a way that is healthy, fair, pro-social and culturally

“...how and what we eat determines to a great extent the use we make of the world - and what is to become of it.” appropriate, while securing livelihoods and restoring ecosystems. POSITIVE MEDICINE

feed the

mind HOW TO BOOST YOUR MOOD THROUGH FOOD.

by Gemma Hurditch

Whilst boosting mood implies a quick fix to a short-term problem, long periods of low mood signal depression. Moods of hyper-agitation and restlessness can be indicative of anxiety. In this article, we will look at some of the ways we can boost positive moods and help curb negative ones. One of the major predictors of depressive disease is… poor diet! Whilst other risk factors for mental health issues such as early childhood trauma and social disadvantage are less easy to target, we do eat every day. Therefore, the choices we make can be helpful and supportive, or they can worsen mood and create more of a burden. Not enough good food is one side of this problem; too much of the wrong food is the other side. So what is a poor diet? On the ‘too much’ spectrum of things we have the problems of too much of the following: Sugar: Sugar, particularly highly refined sugar such as high fructose corn syrup or white cane sugar, which we find in soft drinks, lollies, cakes, chocolate and other sugary treats, can cause blood sugar

36

spikes which are quite destabilising to the body. Sugar uses up valuable nutrients for its digestion and metabolism, which is why sugar such as the carbohydrates in whole fruit, vegetables and whole grains is easier on the body. It comes packaged with the vitamins and minerals needed to process it, and the fibre to slow down its effect on blood sugar levels. When sugar comes without any additional nutrition, it depletes the body, raising the blood sugar – which the body then needs to package away safely into cells. The digestion and packing away into cells happens quickly, causing the body to soon feel hungry again. This yo-yo effect of hunger and high sugar – particularly when coupled with poor intake of vitamins and minerals – can lead to hypoglycaemia, symptoms of which include irritability, moodiness, anxiety and shakiness. Saturated fat: Insulin is the main hormone that helps the body to package away the large glucose molecules which can be damaging to our small blood vessels, and thus the eyes, kidneys, nervous system, etc. Saturated fats, particularly

from factory farmed meat, may make it more difficult for insulin to do its job, so the body gets pushed to make even more insulin. Excessive consumption of such saturated fats is linked to an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes and anxiodepressive behaviour. Palm oil in processed foods and fatty cuts of meat is particularly prudent to avoid.

“The choices we make can be helpful and supportive.” Trans fats are bad for your brain. Numerous studies have shown that diets high in trans fats interfere with proper cell communication and are linked to depression and reduced serotonin (a feel-good brain chemical). Check nutrition labels for trans fats, and check ingredient lists which include hydrogenated vegetable oil or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Avoid processed and fried foods. Processed foods, as we noted above, are more likely to contain trans fats,

refined sugars and other chemicals such as artificial colours and preservatives, which can have adverse effects on our mood. Additionally, processed foods are frequently stripped of nutrients, so they provide nothing more than empty calories instead of true nutrition. Foods we are sensitive or allergic to: Sometimes mood issues are tied up with food sensitivities or allergies. The gutbrain axis link, whereby alterations in the gut such as infection, microbiome alterations and even diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome are linked with mental states such as anxiety and depression, is well known. If you feel down or jittery after a particular food it is a good idea to avoid it - common culprits include gluten, pasteurised dairy, soya and eggs. Caffeine: Caffeine content is particularly high in beverages such as coffee, energy drinks and black tea. Caffeine interferes with oestrogen levels and people who suffer with nervous agitation often find relief from ditching coffee and eliminating the adrenaline kick which can leave vulnerable people nervous with free-floating anxiety. Alcohol can be added to the list of

CNM

Phytonutrients – beneficial plant chemicals appear to be key. Aim to eat 8-9 cups of a rainbow-coloured assortment of fruit and vegetables, raw or lightly steamed to maintain maximum benefits. Green tea and berries are also important sources of phytonutrients with diverse roles such as enhanced cellular communication, immune and nervous support and inflammation reduction. Omega 3 oils – quality fish oils, oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, anchovies and herring or flaxseeds, walnuts and chia, if preferred. Omega 3 has shown mixed results as a therapeutic aid for depression, but research is promising and ongoing. Hydrate – Hydration is really important to keep your body and brain functioning optimally. Make 8 daily glasses of filtered water a priority. Of course, it’s important to seek expert support if your low moods do not appear to improve.

junk foods as it provides very little in the way of beneficial compounds, and is a drain on the mind and body.

So what should we be eating instead? A Mediterranean-style diet rich in legumes (beans and lentils), extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, oily fish and plenty of fruit and vegetables is shown to reduce risk of mental health issues and inflammation (which is linked to depression) and boost longevity. Wholegrain and traditionally prepared foods are encouraged; this limits the nutrient depletion from over-processing. Probiotic foods such as kefir, natural yoghurt, kombucha and kimchi have shown promise in restoring a harmonious gut and mood. The microbiome of sufferers of mental health and mood disorders differs from that of controls, and those with psychiatric illness and ASD have signature microbiome elements. Encourage gut health by incorporating non-pasteurised fermented foods, so long as they don’t disagree with you.

POSITIVELY ORGANIC

a homage to the

kerry cow A BREED TO CHERISH. by Hans Wieland

This article was triggered by the renewed interest in raw cow’s milk and also by discussions about the role of the cow in the current debate on climate change.

We had bought two Kerry Cows before we even set foot on this Island in August 1985. A German family who had made the move two years earlier, and kept a small herd of Kerry cows, had highly recommended them: “They are extremely hardy and can be out-wintered. They are light on the land and do little damage to the pastures, because they are small. They live a long and healthy life and calf easily, but most importantly their milk is simply the best for making cheese, butter and yoghurt, and they are beautiful animals.” That sold it to us! Our land was average to poor and we had no shed, but we had a burning ambition to be self-sufficient on dairy products from the very beginning, so keeping Kerry cows seemed to be a match made in heaven. On 16th October 1985, Glendalough Alice and Jane, pure bred Kerry cows, entered our lives and kept us company for almost 15 years, providing us with their tasty milk and building the foundation for our emerging organic farmhouse cheese enterprise.

Ireland’s Oldest Dairy Breed The origin of the Kerry cow, now classified as a rare breed of cattle, dates as far back as 2000 BC. The Kerry cow is thought to have descended from the Celtic shorthorn, the little black cow, brought to Ireland by New Stone Age farmers migrating from Eastern Europe, seeking new land. “In ancient Irish society cows were of such overweening importance that they almost had a status as members of

“What distinguishes the Kerry from every other breed is the health benefits of their milk, amongst the most nutritious milks in the world.” that society.” (Cattle in Ancient Ireland) The Kerry cow’s job was always that of milk maker for smaller farms in the south-west of Ireland, specifically the “kingdom” of Kerry. Kerry cattle were first recognized as a breed in 1839 and the herd book was established in 1887. Ireland’s all year round mild climate favoured cattle for pasturing and dairying: “Our present day, small, black, dairy cattle are the result of four and a half millennia of careful planning and selective breeding, thus making the Kerry probably the oldest dairy breeds in Europe,” writes The Kerry Cattle Society Ltd., who maintains the herd book since taking over from the Royal Dublin Society in 2001. The number of animals registered per year has fluctuated between 50 and 280 throughout the 20th century. Like with many rare breeds, one of the reasons for the decline in numbers has been the displacement of Kerry cattle in favour of other breeds, such as Friesian and Holstein in Ireland.

Why are Kerry cows special? A distinct characteristic of the breed is that the Kerry cow is small in stature, two thirds of the weight of a Holstein Friesian cow, making them light on the ground and perfect for keeping grazing land in good condition for longer. On average, a Kerry cow will produce about 3,000-3,700kg of milk in one season, one third compared to an average Holstein Friesian. What distinguishes the Kerry from every other breed is the health benefits of their milk, amongst the most nutritious milks in the world. The fat globules, being smaller than in other breeds, makes the milk easier to digest for humans. The reason this cow produces such an amazing milk is that the breed has not been ‘improved’ by humans over time. It is milk as nature intended and makes the Kerry cow a very interesting proposition for anyone who prefers quality over quantity. In comparison, modern “improved” cows have been bred solely for producing large quantities of milk. The Kerry cow is a perfect example of how often less equals more. Even the Slow Food Movement has extolled the virtues of this humble animal.

Artisan Foods and Kerry cow milk The taste also speaks for itself, with high-end confectioners and artisan cheese makers choosing Kerry cow milk. The famous and award winning Gubbeen farmhouse cheeses utilise milk from Kerry cows. Murphy’s ice-cream makers in Dingle as well as Kells Bay Cheese get milk

from Kerry cows milked by Colm Murphy in Lispole, Co, Kerry. Colm keeps 25 Kerry cows as part of his dairy herd of Friesians and Holstein cows. Seán and Kieran Murphy started Murphy’s Ice Cream in Dingle in 2000 with the goal of making the best icecream in the world. On their website they state: “There’s no real trick to what we do, we just take care and use the best of everything. Murphy’s ice cream uses the milk from the rare, indigenous breed of Kerry cow because the milk is so wonderful.”

What does the future hold for the Kerry cow? “If the Kerry cow isn’t milked, she will die,” emphasises Mrs. Hilliard, who still milks 25 from a herd of 46. The milk goes to the Kerry Co-op. There are some farmers who keep Kerry cows as part of a mixed herd to increase the butterfat content of their milk. Brian from Kells Bay cheese has a plan too: “In time we would like to explore the possibilities of developing an upland dairy herd, maybe 15 to 20 cows on 60 to 70 acres of abandoned rough hill pasture

here at Kells Bay. A very low input, outwintered, but well overseen, dairy herd based on the inherent merits of the Kerry Cow.” Our memories of Kerry cows will always be associated with our home-made quark which made the best delicious cheesecake, “a great provoker of gluttony amongst all those who encounter it”. INDULGE IN HEARTY COMFORTS. by David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear This batch of winter recipes call for us to eat in season and support local producers. There is a major focus at this time on buying local, helping Irish growers and food producers to thrive during a time of challenge. With this in mind, we’re thrilled to share these two wonderfully hearty recipes below!

BERRY AND APPLE CRUMBLE This crumble recipe is dairy, gluten, and refined sugarfree and it is super-tasty too. Be careful – if you start trying it, you might end up eating half of it in one go!

Instructions 1 Cut the apple into bite-sized pieces and put it into a pot, together with the berries and the other stewed fruit ingredients. 2 Bring the fruit mixture to the boil and then reduce to a

Serves: 8 people Time: 30 mins Ingredients Stewed fruit: 500g Raspberries 300g blueberries and cranberries 160g apples 5 tbsp maple syrup 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 4 tbsp water Crumble: 150g oats (can use gluten-free oats) 50g ground almond 3 tbsp pumpkin seed 3 tbsp sunflower seeds 75ml sunflower oil/coconut oil (5 tbsp) 90ml maple syrup

simmer. Stirring occasionally, stew the fruit for about 20 minutes, or until all the fruit has properly broken down. 3 In the meantime, preheat the oven to 170˚C. 4 If using coconut oil for the crumble, melt it first by heating up

in a pan. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients for the crumble together in a bowl, including the oil. 5 Once the fruit is stewed down, add it to your crumble dish

and spread it out evenly (we used a 30cm ceramic dish). 6 Spread the crumble top evenly over the fruit and put in the

preheated oven for about 25 mins at 170˚C or until the top of the crumble starts to go golden. Enjoy!

CAULIFLOWER WINTER CURRY BAKE This is a really delicious one-pan bake, in which we simply prep all the veg, put them in a pan along with a sauce and bake them in the oven. That’s it – delicious dinner ready! It goes very well with rice for a great family/celebratory dinner. We use a potimarron pumpkin. If you can’t source one, simply replace it with butternut squash or sweet potato. Serves: 6 people Time: 10 minutes prep and 40 minutes in the oven Ingredients 1 head of cauliflower 1 leek 500g pumpkin/sweet potato/butternut squash 100g mushrooms of choice - we used oyster mushrooms 6 store bought vegan sausages (ensure they’re defrosted if from frozen) Small bunch of fresh herb of choice to serve 50g baby spinach 1 Tbsp Tamari 2 tbsp oil Generous pinch of coarse sea salt Sauce: 2 cloves of garlic 1 small thumb sized piece of ginger 1 onion ½ chilli Juice of ½ lime 1 tbsp maple syrup or liquid sweetener of choice 1x 400g tin of Coconut milk 400ml veg stock 1.5 tbsp medium curry powder 1 flat tbsp of aromatic spices - cinnamon/cardamom/clove/ star anise powder ½ tbsp salt 2 tbsp tamari

Instructions 1 Preheat the oven to 200C. 2 Your first step is to make the sauce. Peel and roughly chop the

garlic, ginger and onion and add to a blender along with the rest of the sauce ingredients and blend until smooth. 3 Finely tear/chop the mushrooms. Peel and finely chop the pumpkin/sweet potato/butternut squash. Chop the sausages into bite sized pieces and slice the leek into nice bite sized rounds (ensuring that you give it a good wash, as sediment often hides inside the green of the leek). Remove the rib from the kale, and roughly chop if using. Add all these veg into a large deep oven casserole dish along with the sauce and mix. 4 Chop the cauliflower into 4 equal sized ‘steaks’, chopping it from the top to the bottom. Place the cauliflower steaks on a separate baking tray, along with any smaller pieces of cauliflower that fell off, and also the cauliflower leaves (chop the wider pieces into thin strips so they cook through). Spray/brush with 2 tbsp of oil oil, drizzle over some tamari and sprinkle some coarse sea salt. 5 Put both trays in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the pumpkin is soft and cooked through. 6 Roughly chop the fresh herb of choice 7 Remove from the oven and garnish with the roasted cauliflower and chopped fresh herbs. Enjoy! thehappypear.ie

THE HEALING PROPERTIES OF LIGHT. by Jeffrey McTavish

Light has had a central role in the development of human health. It has the ability to regulate diurnal circadian rhythm, enable ocular vision and create a multitude of physiological roles in our body. Photo-bio-modulation (PBM) is a human experience to alter and harness the effectiveness of light, to address a myriad of human and animal health conditions. Indeed, PBM is beneficial for all who live in light. PBM is an acronym that defines a specific therapy to address a variety of physiological challenges that we experience. The concept of using specific light frequencies to assist the body to return to homeostasis (i.e. balance) has been explored and researched for some time. PBM is a light energy treatment protocol that is global, as well as tissue specific in its design and deliverance. When considering PBM treatment, it is best to consult a qualified practitioner. In general, PBM is an excellent treatment for a variety of conditions such as sport injuries, sport recovery and enhancement, as well as general general global inflammatory ailments like chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, CFS, neuropathic pain syndromes, oral mucositis, anti-ageing, post-surgery recovery, to

name just a few conditions.. Advancements in PBM delivery and technology, with its effect on brain function and neuro effects, is an exciting and emerging research field that is bringing light to the ailments that remain in the dark, so to speak, affecting our brain function. PBM is an important and emerging science of promise that generates little or no side effects. It could change your life. thewindsorclinic.co.uk

SHORT AND SWEE T

Alkaline Alignment SIMPLE STEPS TO MAINTAIN HEALTH! by Roddy MacDonald One area of natural health care that is frequently ignored is proper body pH balance, which has profound impacts on our wellbeing. There is a common misconception that the body’s buffering system will keep the pH of our blood and tissues at the ideal, slightly alkaline level of 7.30 to 7.45. However, modern living and

“A few simple nutritional changes can make a huge difference.” high levels of stress can push blood and tissue pH more towards the acidic zone. Initial signs that body pH is under stress include reduced energy levels and a struggling immune system. The more acidic blood becomes, the less efficiently it is able to transfer oxygen throughout the body. A few simple nutritional changes can make a huge difference. Firstly, start drinking more health promoting water instead of excess tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol. Ideally, drink alkaline antioxidant water, such as the kind filtered through the Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter. Secondly, consume plenty of vegetables, particularly dark green vegetables, which are nutrient dense and alkalising. If that is a challenge, take a daily serving of a green super food powder, such as pHresh Greens, which is excellent for pH balance and general nutrition. Lastly, take plenty of alkaline minerals to help support pH balance. If you are not getting enough from your diet, a blend of alkaline electrolytes in the bicarbonate form can help buffer acidicity. Alkamax is a convenient blend. Focus on improved body pH balance. It is one of the most important things you can do to maintain or regain your health. water-for-health.co.uk

It’s in the Blood A POWERFUL TOOL FOR HEALTH. by Aisling Cronin Are you feeling consistently sluggish? A quick and easy fingerprick test could help to pinpoint the cause, says Naturopath and author, John Byrne ND, BHSc. John is based in Navan, Co. Meath, and uses Live Blood Analysis as part of his practice, alongside a full consultation.

“Live Blood Analysis is a powerful educational and motivational tool.” Live Blood Analysis is a quick, painless finger-prick blood test that takes a drop of blood and magnifies it 15,000 times. The blood is then shown on a television monitor and assessed while it remains active for up to 20 minutes. This allows the practitioner to see the number, shape and movement of the red blood cells, the white blood cells (which show the activity of the immune system), plus the state of the plasma (the fluid in which the blood cells move). Live Blood Analysis can’t diagnose specific diseases, but it can show noteworthy changes in the blood, or the presence of substances that indicate a problem. According to John, people who have experienced this blood test have been astonished by this visual glimpse into their own biological universe. “It is almost a case of a stitch in time saves nine,” he says. “Live Blood Analysis is a powerful educational and motivational tool. If a patient can see clearly that they need to make dietary and lifestyle changes, it’s easier for them to comply with their treatment when the evidence of its ability to work is there, in front of their eyes.” Book a Live Blood Analysis appointment with John by contacting him on 046 906 0702 or checking out his website, naturaltherapy.ie

Empowering Communities AN ELECTRICITY SUPPLIER WITH A DIFFERENCE’. by Aisling Cronin Our societal journey towards sovereignty and self-determination has guided many of us to explore how we can become more selfsufficient. On a practical level, one very powerful step we can take is to re-evaluate the energy supply systems that power our homes and communities. We were very excited by the potential solutions proposed by Sarah Fogarty of Community Power: Ireland’s first community owned electricity supplier. This trailblazing collective is a partnership of community owned energy organisations around Ireland, working to create a sustainable energy future for their local areas. Associated groups and communities include Friends of the Earth and the Aran Islands.

“We are supporting people and communities to get their power from themselves.” Sarah explains, ‘We help people and their communities to manifest renewable energy into a sustainable economy. Those involved are working on generating renewable community projects and helping communities through that transition.’ Community Power began just outside the small town of Templederry in Co. Tipperary, with Ireland’s first and only community owned wind farm. Now, Community Power is formed by a partnership of community energy groups from Tipperary, Limerick, Galway, Mayo and Dublin. They are actively working to support more renewable energy projects across Ireland. Sarah says, ‘We support community energy groups and citizens to develop and own their own renewable energy generation, such as solar farms, wind turbines, or hydro turbines. They can then sell the power that is generated back to themselves, their neighbours, businesses and community facilities in their wider community through the Community Utility. We are supporting people and communities to get their power from themselves.’

These health trailblazers have formulated a new blend called Clean Lean Protein Coffee: a stimulating fusion of real Arabica coffee and 600mg of balanced medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), naturally-derived from coconut oil. The MCTs contain over 90% C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid), two key fatty acids that provide energy direct to your muscles’ energy-producing factories, the mitochondria. Felix Hughes of Nuzest explains, ‘this all-natural, plantbased coffee is complete with all 9 essential amino acids, and is suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences: vegan, paleo, primal, kosher, halal.’

“Nuzest’s ingredients have been sustainably grown in Northern Europe, with no requirement for nitrogen fertiliser or irrigation.” Nuzest are also proud of their Golden Pea Protein Isolate, a nutritional powder that packs a punch. Pea Protein Isolate has been shown to be more effective than whey protein isolate in contributing to muscle growth and maintenance. Nuzest’s ingredients have been sustainably grown in Northern Europe, with no requirement for nitrogen fertiliser or irrigation … and they also taste great. Felix recommends enjoying one of their powders as a breakfast smoothie with coconut or almond milk and water. ‘No fillers, binders or bulking agents mean you can use a handy shaker and drink on the go,’ he shares with us. There’s nothing quite like knowing that you’ve had a delicious and nutritionally power packed start to your day. New Zealand and Australian international rugby stars such as Ma’a Nonu and Matt Giteau swear by Nuzest to support their health, performance and exercise recovery. Let go. Connect. Create. SOLARIS TEA’S 7-DAY TEA EXPERIENCE. by Joerg Mueller

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” – Lord of the Rings

Currently, many of us are experiencing increased levels of stress and disconnect: adapting to new work environments, financial pressures and reduced social interactions. At Solaris Tea, our main focus was to offer unique, organic speciality teas to the food service and catering sector in over twelve countries. When our turnover dropped by 95% overnight, we had to act fast to stay alive. As two Medical Herbalists (BscHons), we realised that we had a lot of knowledge to offer: after all, tea is all about savouring the present moment – on a sensory and emotional level. With this in mind, we started to create a seven-day experience that addresses many of the challenges which we are currently experiencing. In our Solaris Tea experience, we have fused elements of the Asian Tea ceremony with Western style sensory experiences. The Asian tea ceremony is about simplicity and gratitude for what we have in our lives. So how and when can we create these moments of calm when the storm is raging? Each time, when taking part in a

tea ceremony in Asia, my mind felt calm, settled and rejuvenated. I wanted to make this part of my daily routine. But who has time for an hour-long tea ceremony on a daily basis? I realised that for it to work, it had to become a tiny daily habit which is attached to something that I already do and enjoy: my five-minute tea break. This became five minutes a day of “me time” – a time to let go, connect to myself and feel free of life’s demands. To make it easier for myself to “get into the space”, I started to focus on the tea’s sensory experiences – its smell, taste and effects. Then I started to connect positive emotions, goals and memories to the sensory experience, letting them travel with the sensation and sink in. This had a powerful positive effect – I felt more balanced and energetic, and my life, bit by bit, shifted to a more positive perspective. Our Solaris Tea experience gently introduces a framework in simple-to-follow steps. Our aim is to make this an enjoyable and beneficial experience – we have tailored this specifically for people working from home, to help them establish a new routine. We’ve received amazing feedback so far,

from everyone who took the leap and joined us. They have reported increased work productivity, energy and more positivity – after all, we get back more of what we pay attention to. You can sign up for the free sevenday Tea experience here: bit.ly/solaristeameditation Warm regards, Joerg

Amplify your body’s healing potential RELIEVE, REPAIR, RESTORE. by Alison McEvoy

I spoke with Cara Long of Alta CBD recently. Cara began her CBD journey when she was left in chronic pain from an accident. She suffered whiplash and tendinitis for some time before finding her relief in CBD; “I used a topical cream and almost overnight I could see the difference. I was also able to get a deeper night’s sleep immediately. It really helped me, but it was hard to find. I started making my own topical cream, combining CBD with other herbs. I found that the CBD actually amplifies the healing qualities of the herbs.” The range supplies high-quality salves such as ‘Muscle Mend’; a fantastic blend of CBD with herbal terpenes such as arnica, wintergreen, frankincense and peppermint, specifically formulated to ease muscular aches and pains. They also boast a wonderfully restorative range of CBD tinctures which support the body’s ability to FOCUS, REPAIR and REST, to name but a few.

Traditional medicine knows best THE TUI NA WAY. by Alison McEvoy

“Tui na (pronounced ‘twee nah’) is a rising star in the world of hands-on healing...”

What makes Alta CBD unique are the healing, herbal synergies at work within the products. The CBD highlights the various actions of the plants so that they become even more effective and powerful. This works in conjunction with their “broad spectrum CBD, which not only has CBD, but also the other beneficial cannabinoids. This creates an entourage effect.” CBD, aka Cannabidiol, has been studied and shown to be: anti-inflammatory, analgesic (relieves pain), anti-spasmodic (may relieve seizures and migraines), anti-anxiety and neuroprotective. So, if you are looking for a way to naturally support your body through pain relief, recovery from injury or relief from anxiety, Alta CBD offers a truly fantastic range of products.

I spoke with Anthony Monteith, owner of Jade Natural Health Clinic in Dublin, about all things Tui Na (pronounced ‘twee nah’) recently. Anthony is a practitioner and teacher of Tui Na and Qi Gong. He chose Tui Na because “it helped me. After four sessions my knee pain was gone. But it also has helped millions of people in China...it’s tested, it’s proven to work.” Tui Na is a rising star in the world of hands-on healing in Ireland. It has long been a main component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is widely used in China, including in hospitals. It is a therapeutic massage and can be performed as either soft tissue or deep tissue massage. It is a complete system which means that, in itself, it can be used to treat ailments, or indeed the entire body, through freeing blockages of Chi (aka energy flow). It uses the same body map as acupuncture. However, while acupuncture treats a patient using needles at specific points throughout the body, Tui Na uses manual stimulation of these points. ‘Tui’ meaning ‘push’ and ‘Na,’ meaning ‘grasp’, indicate how this is done. The practitioner uses his or her hands to physically adjust the body in a variety of ways such as pushing, kneading, rolling, brushing, shaking, pressing and rubbing to create friction and heat, which is absorbed into the body. Anthony treats a variety of ailments using Tui Na. At the moment, he sees alot of “postural fatigue”, as people sitting in front of desks suffer with back, neck and shoulder pain. If you’re in pain, listen to it and take action...for pain is “the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.” (Kahil Gibran, The Prophet)

C the Vitality STUDY REVEALS BENEFITS OF LIPOSOMAL SUPPLEMENTS. by Aisling Cronin

It has long been common knowledge that Vitamin C promotes good health … but deeper layers to this knowledge have been revealed by a study that was recently published by the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM). Liposomal encapsulation technology is a cutting-edge technological method of making liposomes – microscopic bubbles that encapsulate various substances. The name liposome originates from two Greek words – lipos and soma – ‘lipos’ meaning fat and ‘soma’ meaning body. Liposomal supplements are a class of health supplements that feature a protective shell around their major molecules. This shell can safeguard the supplements from external wear and tear, but is easily broken down by the body once ingested. Standard oral tablets and capsules can fall short when it comes to delivering their full therapeutic potential, due to the actions of enzymes in the stomach and intestinal tract. The absorption process may be further hindered by the integrity of the intestinal lining or the addition of fillers, binders, gelatins and sugar, which may lead to incomplete disintegration, reducing bioavailability of the active components. Some nutrients also efficiently crossing cell membranes. The goal of the study published in the ISOM was to compare concentrations of ascorbate (vitamin C) in plasma and white blood cells following oral administration of liposomal vitamin C (LivOn Labs, Altrient), versus traditional vitamin C in the form of powder. The study authors were Nina Mikirova, Tom Levy and Ronald Hunninghake. Tom Levy is a consultant of the Riordan Clinic and LivOn Laboratories. He said: “When choosing a liposomal product, the most important factor, apart from encapsulation rates, is the stability of the liposome. You want the liposome to remain stable in its packaging and also to remain stable in the body, so it can deliver its load to the cells. You can easily test for a liposome and its encapsulation rates outside of the body –however, once in the body, it is more complicated to test stability. Blood levels of vitamin C is one way of testing how stable a liposome is.” Some of the key points in the study were:

The body retains liposomal vitamin C longer than non-encapsulated vitamin C.

• The body retains the vitamin C from liposomal vitamin C longer than non-encapsulated vitamin C. • Faster uptake of liposomal vitamin C was observed in the white blood cells. • 50% more vitamin C was absorbed in white blood cells from liposomal vitamin C than from non-encapsulated vitamin C. Nutritional therapist Jackie Newson BSc (Hons) explains, ‘the unique delivery system of liposomal encapsulation technology ensures a near complete uptake of vitamin C into the bloodstream by avoiding some of the usual hazards that contribute to poor absorption. By wrapping vitamin C into a liposome, the body continues to absorb it over time and it stays in the bloodstream longer, so plasma levels increase and stay at those higher levels for a longer period.’ abundanceandhealth.co.uk

Heaven-Sent Water ONE WOMAN’S INSPIRING JOURNEY. by Aisling Cronin

52

“This is how I find my soul, my purpose, my life’s journey. The journey has left a mark on me forever.”

Michelle Keane is a Co Kerry-based interior designer and public speaker, whose spiritual journey means a great deal to her. During a recent conversation we had with her about her new book ‘The Discovery of Kingdom Water’, we were touched by the deep connection she shares with her angels. Michelle’s journey began in May 2018, when she paid a visit to the sacred well of the Archangel Michael in Ballinskelligs, Co.Kerry. Over the following two years, she was sent on a ‘most strange and wonderful journey’: seeing visions granted to her by spirits and angels; receiving messages from her ancestors; meeting divine people who helped her on her path; and uncovering seven ancient wells on her land in Knocknagoshel, in Northeast Kerry. Michelle was amazed to uncover an old, longforgotten source of pure fresh drinking water. This water contains over 66 minerals and boasts a distinct taste profile. This water was brought to the surface by dynamic, modern methods, and has now been branded as Kingdom Water (which also forms part of the title of Michelle’s book). The proud Kerry woman explained the significance of this name to us: ‘The angels told me that the water’s name should contain a reference to God, so what better name to choose than the name of my own county? The Kingdom … suggesting the Kingdom of Heaven.’ Michelle’s book came about after she began to realise that she would need to keep a record of all that happened to her, beginning with that fateful day in Ballinskelligs. She began to write a diary, filling it with the events and visions that she could hardly believe. The Discovery of Kingdom Water’ tells the story of Michelle’s spiritual journey. She travelled to India, moving through the Himalayas and stopping off to visit Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in Kainchi, Dham, Badrinath and Devprayag, where the two holy rivers Alaknada and Bhagirathi meet to form the Mother Ganga. Here, Michelle received a blessing for her own Kingdom Water. Michelle has released the water, as her ancestors and angels directed her to do, and she now waits, knowing that her bit is done, and the next stage will soon begin. Michelle believes that this water will reach many people and bless their lives. ‘The Discovery of Kingdom Water’ is a hauntingly beautiful book that describes, in great detail, how Michelle came to a deeper understanding of life. She says, ‘I highly encourage anyone who wants a signed copy to get in touch, and I’ll happily send one out to you. I’m more than happy to do that. The water has been gifted to me, I believe, by God and the angels, and I want to get it out there and spread the message. This is how I find my soul, my purpose, my life’s journey. The journey has left a mark on me forever.’

Speed up your blood flow Ginkgo biloba is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to alleviate the symptoms of poor blood flow in conditions such as cold hands and feet. To get the desired effects, it is essential that you choose a product with a documented content of active compounds.

Warm hands and feet again A thermo-graphic camera can be used to test ginkgo biloba's ability to improve circulation in the hands. When the test subject takes ginkgo biloba, their hands become significantly warmer in the minutes right after they have been cooled down in very cold water.

Your bloodstream carries oxygen and nutrients to every single part of your body – from head to toe – to ensure that all your body functions work properly. However, the flow of blood through the smallest capillaries can decrease for various reasons, and that may cause problems like cold fingers and toes.

Cold hands and feet? This problem may be a result of having poor blood circulation, and the solution could be tablets with ginkgo biloba. Every inch of the body depends on a wellfunctioning blood supply that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells. As we humans age, our blood circulation becomes less efficient, leading to problems like cold hands and feet. Supports your blood circulation It stands to reason that ginkgo biloba is so popular among older people. The active compounds in the extract dilate your blood vessels, helping your blood to flow more easily through them.

What is ginkgo biloba? Ginkgo biloba is a plant extract made from the leaves of ginkgo biloba, an ancient temple tree that is also known as maidenhair tree. The extract contains a variety of biologically active compounds. Two specific compounds – ginkgoflavone glycosides and terpene lactones – are particularly well-documented and have been shown to support good blood circulation and good cognitive function. Today, thanks to scientific research that has delved into

the underlying mechanisms of these active ingredients, it is possible to manufacture high-quality extracts that deliver the exact same amount of active compound with each tablet. Ginkgo-Biloba Pharma Nord represents this new generation of pharmaceutical-standard ginkgo biloba products that have become increasingly popular, namely among the elderly.

DIY digestive health ESSENTIAL FOR HEALING YOUR GUT.

Behind the scenes at Terra Health Essentials are a group of people who suffer from digestive discomfort. As such, their commitment to easing the pain of, and helping to prevent, digetive issues is a “personal commitment”. Their product range has the dual focus of both relieving the symptoms of digestive disease and optimising gut health. Their website is amazing - an education in the digestive system and, specifically, how things go wrong and can be righted. The digestive system is a very sensitive system. It can be easily disrupted from the inside or the outside. An unconscious diet, or indeed environmental stress, both lead to the same outcome in our gut – disruption and discomfort. Our stomach is basically a big cooking pot. Not all ingredients will ‘go’ together, as we know when cooking. Inside our stomachs, we need to put foods that are compatible with each other, and with the acid levels in our stomach. Diet is a delicate balancing act, one that all of us

need to continously work at throughout the changing seasons. Terra Health Essentials’ products are a natural way to heal digestive issues – no side effects. We tried out some Terra Health Essentials recently and were really impressed with their Heartburn Relief Kit. It may come in especially handy, so close to Christmas! The kit features their original and most tried and trusted set of products; Reflux Inhibitor and Acid Relief. These work synergistically to prevent acid reflux by alleviating heartburn and indigestion, and correcting the acid balance in the stomach. A Bed That Breathes ENJOY ALL-NATURAL SUPPORT. by Aisling Cronin Back comfort is a high priority for many of us these days, as we have settled into a lifestyle of working from home, sitting in chairs that may not be designed to encourage good posture. The surface that supports us at night can have a great bearing on the level of comfort and ease we experience during the day. This is where ecofriendly mattress company The Spinery can help. Dr. Sinead Moore, director and co-founder, explains that the company is passionate about ensuring the highest level of comfort, while also supporting the environment.

“The Fitzwilliam mattress promotes a deep, restful sleep.”

‘The philosophy of our products is pure and simple,’ she says. ‘We choose natural latex as it is very responsive to the body, offering the perfect combination of comfort and support. We choose TENCEL as a cover, because it is another wonderful sustainable material that feels soft and silky as well as sleeping cool. We use the same materials for our contour pillow, which is the perfect compliment to our mattress for a restful night’s sleep.’ The Spinery’s commitment to comfort and eco-awareness can be clearly seen in their highly popular natural mattress,

The Fitzwilliam. This mattress has been described as a ‘bed that breathes’, as its natural latex contains carefully placed aerations to allow fresh air circulation. This promotes a deep, restful sleep. The Spinery put over thirty years of experience and research into The Fitzwilliam – they were passionate about creating a mattress that offers great comfort and support, without any need for toxic chemicals. Sinead says, ‘The Fitzwilliam is durable enough to last for many years, and when it is finally ready to be replaced, it can biodegrade naturally.’ thespinery.com

be winter wise THE WELL-BEING DUO: GINKGO & VITAMIN C.

by alison McEvoy Each winter, all through secondary school, my fingers were covered in plasters when my chilblains would break through the skin. Winters were painfully long those days when my feet and hands were akin to blocks of ice, day and night. Blood flow to my hands and feet was sluggish and chilblains were the painful result. I came across Ginkgo Biloba after I left school. Thanks to it, alongside my yoga routine and veggie diet, I have long said my goodbyes to chilblains.

What is Ginkgo Biloba? Ginkgo biloba is a traditional herbal remedy that has been used for centuries to improve blood circulation, and offer help for problems like cold hands and feet. Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species and an extract of its leaves is the active ingredient in Ginkgo-Biloba Pharma Nord tablets. Pharma Nord is, in fact, the only brand in Ireland selling ginkgo biloba, over the counter in Ireland, in pharmacies. Ginkgo Biloba contains active compounds with a unique ability to help the blood pass through the cardiovascular system – the system of arteries and veins through which the blood is pumped, from

the heart, all over the body. Good blood circulation from head to toe is key to a healthy and well functioning body. Your body consists of billions of cells and each of these cells needs oxygen and nutrients in order to carry out the their functions that keep you in good health.

D is another great way to be winter wise. This sunshine vitamin is key to the development of strong bones and teeth, and is now being shown to support the immune system too.

Brain Power

It is always wise to do a little investigating before reaching out and picking a brand off the shelf. There are many preparations out there, for example, with ginkgo biloba. While they may seem pretty much alike, there can be big differences. Ginkgo Biloba Pharma Nord is manufactured using the same quality and safety inspection procedures as those used to manufacture pharmaceutical drugs – hence their name. It is a traditional herbal remedy made to pharmaceutical standards. The same goes for Pharma Nord’s Vitamin D pearls. They are dissolved in cold pressed olive oil to enhance absorption, making sure each and every cell gets what it needs to stay strong and well throughout the winter.

Our brain consumes twenty percent of the entire body’s oxygen supply. Blood supply to the brain is crucial for fueling and maintaining our cognitive functions, such as our memory and our ability to process information through planning and evaluating outcomes. Ginkgo has long been associated with the protection of our cognitive functions.

Supplementing Sunshine Mothers are told to give their babies Vitamin D drops every day for the first year of their lives. The reason for this is simple; most Europeans do not get enough Vitamin D. We all are very much aware that we don’t get enough sunshine and the two are, as you know, synonymous. Vitamin

strengthen

your immunity RESILIENCE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. by Meaghan Esser 2020 has been a challenging year for many people, but with the right tools and attitude, we can face uncertain times with confidence and poise.

“When (boosting) your immunity, remember that vitamins and minerals often work together.” A strong immune system has always been important, but the challenges of modern life have reminded us just how necessary it is to have optimal immune support. Immune supporting nutrients such as Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D are more important than ever. Vitamin D has long been touted as a necessary immune boosting vitamin, with many recent studies highlighting the importance of this vitamin in direct relation to favourable health outcomes.

As is often the case with supplementation, the best results are not always produced by taking certain nutrients in isolation. For example, vitamin K2 is necessary to direct Vitamin D to the right places in the body. Furthermore, magnesium is required in order for the body to metabolise Vitamin D into a useable form. In fact, studies show that Vitamin D will sit in a stored (inactive) form unless there is enough magnesium in one’s body to activate it. This means that vitamin D supplementation remains ineffective in at least 50% of people, while some estimates place magnesium deficiency as high as 80% of the population. On the same note, other studies show that people with optimum magnesium levels require less vitamin D supplementation in order to achieve sufficient vitamin D levels in their body. Magnesium is a vital nutrient for stress management. When your body is under stress, it is at a greater risk for disease. Research shows that stress causes magnesium depletion. In turn, low levels of magnesium reduce our ability to deal with stress. Magnesium has been found to

increase the brain’s ability to reduce the fear and anxiety responses, both of which are more important than ever when facing uncertain times. Magnesium also aids in helping the body to experience a more restful sleep, which is another essential factor in immune health. When looking for a product to boost your immunity, remember that vitamins and minerals often work together, and it’s important to make sure that you consume adequate cofactors in order to have the result you are looking for. New Vitamin D Plus is formulated with all of the cofactors that are needed for optimal vitamin D uptake. In addition to vitamin D, it contains vitamin B12, vitamin K2, and magnesium. During unprecedented times, we do not need to live in fear and stress. More than ever, we have the right tools and knowledge to keep ourselves strong, healthy, and resilient. itlhealth.com

touch THE BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY.

by Maureen O’Callaghan

The practice of reflexology dates back to ancient times, and as a practitioner, I have seen, at first hand, the benefits of this treatment. Reflexology deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands, which correspond to all of the glands and organs in the body. The physical act of applying pressure to the feet with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques – based on a system of zones and areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet – encourages the body’s natural healing ability. Reflexology is a holistic therapy, which means the application of a reflexology treatment has a positive impact on the whole person. Some of these benefits may include reducing inflammation, improving circulation and inducing relaxation. Reflexology has been shown to provide beneficial effects in the management of a number of conditions: back pain, migraine, infertility, and arthritis, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, sports injuries, and digestive disorders and stress related conditions. The feet and hands are often referred to as a ‘mirror of the body.’ I have been thrilled to witness the benefits of reflexology as a holistic practice for our clients, who often undergo transformative healing in their life after a series of treatments. In chronic cases, where there are long term health conditions, the underlying issues need to be addressed. This is where reflexology is invaluable, as it gets to the root of the

issue during the course of treatment. Often, positive life changes are required to restore balance which, in turn, will ensure homeostasis in the body. A reflexology treatment lasts for approximately one hour. As it is the feet which are generally treated, you simply remove your socks and shoes, and are invited to sit or lie on a comfortable treatment chair or couch. The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply precise pressure techniques to the feet: treating specific points which correspond to all organs and systems of the body. Following the treatment, any significant findings will be discussed with you. As the effects of reflexology are cumulative, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments. In order to gain maximum benefit from your reflexology treatment, try to rest and take things easy, as this helps to boost the body’s natural healing abilities. Increasing the amount of water you drink can help to flush the toxins out of your system, thereby aiding the detoxifying process. Just listen to your body and put aside time to relax. After one or two treatments, your body may respond in a very definite way. The Irish Reflexologists’ Institute (IRIL) was originally founded in 1988 by Martina Barrett and Roisin Carroll, for the purposes of providing a professional body to support the work of all trained

“The feet and hands are often referred to as a ‘mirror of the body.” reflexologists in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. Today, that same ethos holds sway. It remains a notfor-profit professional body, run by reflexologists, that works for its members to ensure excellent standards are maintained in the field of reflexology. It also offers a support network for members, and is recognised as an adjunct health treatment by all the major health insurance companies. When recent global circumstances presented a challenge to reflexologists returning to work, the IRIL provided all members with detailed guidelines and recommendations to assist reflexologists to return to giving treatments to clients, in a manner that ensured the highest standards of safety for both therapist and client. POSITI V E A STROLOGY

crossing

the threshold 62 As an astrologer, the two main questions I have been asked this year are, “What is 2020?” and “What next?” From an astrological point of view, 2020 has been a year in which all of our systems and the status quo have been completely restructured. Anything that we thought before was “stable”, or “normal”, is now being questioned. Many people I have worked with this year have made the decision to commit to their passion - what truly lights up their heart. These decisions, however, do not come without their trials. They are mettletesting and demand an honest answer to the question: “Can you trust what your heart is asking of you, and not believe the fear?” In astrology, we are looking to the date of December 21, 2020 as the crossing of the threshold - the end of the 2020 storm. The crossing of this threshold will stamp a new energy on our lives that will be with us for the next 200 years, long after any of our lifetimes. On an energetic level, December 21 2020 marks the passing of the crown from the Era of Earth to the Era of Air. One thing to keep in mind is that this is the start of a new way of being for the next two centuries. It may take the next few years for the dust to settle, and

THE ERA OF AIR.

for us all to see clearly, but the future is promising.

“December 21 2020 marks the passing of the crown from the Era of Earth to the Era of Air.” So what does this mean? For the past 200 years, we have been living as a world culture from a mainly Earthbased consciousness. We can see this in how we have used the Earth’s resources and fossil fuels with a scarcity type of mentality. We can see this in how we divide land and distinguish borders. Earth tends to distinguish between “this is mine and that is yours.” There are of course many positive qualities of Earth too, such as endurance, stability, and reliability, but I think many of us can see where it’s time for certain patterns of Earth consciousness to be transformed. As we step into Air consciousness, we are going to be opening up to new ways of connecting and new ways of interacting socially. Even though we

have been disconnected physically this year, have you noticed yourself having deeper conversations or at least feeling a deeper appreciation for connection and communication? Air is about connectivity and sharing. It is about minimising physical waste and relying on cleaner energy sources. Air is also about the mind. It governs the thinking aspect of your being, so we are likely to see an emphasis on valuing the exchange of ideas and information, over material goods. As we step into 2021, we are stepping forward into a new era of connectivity, awareness of others, deeper communication and expansion of ideas. While there are some growing pains along the way, stand strong with the values you’ve honed this year and step into 2021 with all your heart.
