positively newsworthy GOOD NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE.

1 Carriers of Culture WORDS RESHAPE ATTITUDES. by Alison McEvoy

We all feel the power of words on a daily level, both in person and on the various screens we interact with daily. The whole of media is made up of people racking their brains into forming phrases that get us to feel something (then buy something). What if we all put a little bit more brainwracking effort in for the good of others? In the arena of motherhood and maternity, words used by professionals are particularly powerful. Especially when the journey is being undertaken for the first time and a parent struggles with the

6

lack of a manual on child-raising. In maternity, and/or motherhood, sometimes words are just not enough... such as in the statement ‘I love my son’. Other times, words are just too much and the historic baggage and weight they have accrued makes them unbearable to hear... such as in statements like ‘inhospitable womb’. These heavy duty words are being weeded out by a new generation of mothers who are ready to take a stand, rather than sit in an office hearing words

from a ‘professional’ that cut like a knife; “Words matter. Changing the harmful discourse that’s become so normalised as a way to describe women’s bodies is long overdue.” (Michelle Kennedy, CEO of Peanut app for women) To this end, a new campaign has made a complete ‘Renaming Revolution Glossary’ available for free online and printed copies are being circulated to clinics and related centres around the UK and the US. Can Ireland get in on this?

2 A Unique Photoshoot COUPLE ENJOY EXTRAORDINARY ANNIVERSARY. by Aisling Cronin Royce and Frankie King, a couple from Iowa in the United States, were first married in 1944 … but they didn’t get to take any wedding photographs until September 2021. Their wedding took place during one of Royce’s two-day leave periods in 1944, before he went overseas to fight in World War II. There was no time for a ceremony, photographs, or even a wedding gown. Seventy-seven years later, the couple enjoyed a very special 77th anniversary on September 16th. Staff at St. Croix Hospice – who help care for the couple – heard their story, and decided they had to make their anniversary extra-special. The solution? A very belated wedding photoshoot! Staff found a vintage 1940s wedding gown for Frankie to wear, while Royce donned his old Air Force uniform. Flowers from the patio were turned into a bouquet

for Frankie, and a music therapist from St. Croix played some 1940s standards as Frankie walked down the “aisle.” Against the backdrop of a wonderfully sunny day, the two held a beautiful anniversary celebration in their own back garden. St. Croix Hospice CEO Heath Bartness was moved by the beauty of the occasion. “How can you not have a sense of overwhelming emotion?” he commented. “The connectivity – you almost feel that you were a part of this, and thinking back to what it was like in World War II the first time, and how meaningful and how emotional this second opportunity was.” Hilary Michelson, a staffer at St. Croix, who is also a professional photographer, captured the heartwarming scenes in a series of beautiful photos that now – at long last – make up the Kings’ wedding album.

3 Young Scientist Makes Waves MAGNETISING PLASTIC AWAY. by Aisling Cronin Young Irish scientist Fionn Ferreira has come up with a highly innovative solution to the issue of ocean microplastics: a simple mixture of magnetised iron oxide and vegetable oil. Fionn, who hails from Schull in Co. Cork, had been searching for a solution to the ocean’s plastic pollution problem from an early age. “I was at our beach and I saw a rock and it had oil spill residue on it, and stuck to this oil spill residue were plastic particles,” he said. “I asked myself why, and found out that plastic particles are what we call non-polar, and oil is nonpolar too. In chemistry likes attract likes, which means non-polar things attract non-polar things.” He came across a possible solution in the form of ferrofluid, a magnetic substance that combines vegetable oil with magnetised iron oxide powder. 5,000 tests of Fionn’s ferrofluid method

demonstrated that it could clean 87% to 93% of microplastics from water: an astonishing discovery. In 2019, Fionn presented his invention to a panel of expert judges at the Google Science Fair ... and won the competition. He is now working to fit the ferrofluid into a device that can span the opening of a home waterpipe, or pipes at a wastewater plant: ensuring that water will be continuously cleaned as it moves through the pipes. He is also researching how to incorporate the ferrofluid into a different machine that could be mounted on boats. “I started out as a lonely inventor,” he commented, “[but] after the Google Science Fair, I could all of a sudden speak to scientists – they gave me credit for what I had done. My idea was no longer a toy invented by a child.”

positively newsworthy the little things 1 Soul Kindling

ALL THE WAYS TO SAY ‘I LOVE YOU’.

by A child’s smile My little boy is a smiler, a waver, a hugger and a raspberry kiss blower. In his less than two years on this earth, he has brought with him an enormous bundle of warmth, affection and love. He is very generous with his currency of smiles, waves, hugs etc. and regularly showers strangers with them in the street as we wander by. For some, this little ray of light from a child’s eyes has amazing effects. These days I am far too exhausted, and my mind too much otherwise occupied, to worry about whether the expression on my face is bringing joy to the general human population or not (it concerned me a great deal throughout my twenties!). My little boy, however, is unknowingly fulfilling this task I used to give myself, in a supremely spontaneous way. He loves to do rounds of our nearby church, fascinated by the huge doors and stained glass windows. The other day he shone a huge smile at the oldest of old men walking by. The man was stopped in his tracks. Adam had made his day, he said, and promised to light a candle for us on his next trip to the church. I could see he felt chosen, that someone had finally seen past his wrinkles, and all the other markings of age on his body, and into his own childlike soul.

“... an enormous bundle of warmth, affection and love.”

8 2 For Those Who See Humour in Everything by Aisling Cronin

“You glimpse hints of daylight even in an ominous horizon…” You were always the class clown. On dull mornings, your friends knew you would be there with a laugh, a smile, or a wayward remark that would likely be met by a swift reprimand. You injected every moment with a delicious whiff of mischief, and spent many drab hours sitting outside the principal’s office for your trouble … yet it was worth it, always, for you had successfully given life to the spirit of adventure that coursed through your veins. Whimsy and merriment walked by your side, always, for you understood a truth that still nestles deeply within your heart: hope spins its eternal dance in those who remember how to laugh. You see wonder in the midst of chaos. You glimpse hints of daylight even in an ominous horizon, thick with rain-laden clouds. You know how to lend good cheer to those who need it, and this ability has been deeply cherished by the ones you love. Yet a deeper weight sits upon you at times. You have learned to be

circumspect with praise, for you remember other, more stinging words, slung from jealous bows. Too intense. Too loud. Too much. “Will you ever grow up? Will you ever take things seriously? Will you never learn to lower your voice, change your tone, be less brash? Your vivacious spark makes us uncomfortable – will you never dim it down?” “Never.” That is the answer of your innermost self: the child whose shoulders still shake with giggles after another outlandish escapade. Their entire being remains alight with mirth. This is who you are.

spirituality & the city Our readers on : UNITY

Doug Gordon Unity is all about connection. It can be with a person, with nature, with the earth, with an animal, or it can be with God, universal energy or your higher self, depending on your beliefs. Let’s face it – everything is made of energy, and everything is interconnected in some way. Unity can be dramatic – like a near death experience I had, during which I was encapsulated in an amazing feeling of love and connection. Or it can be simpler, like making love to your partner, connecting with them on a soul level. During healings, I have often felt as one with the person, connected to them in a state of divine consciousness. Creating unity with others is all about getting out of your head and into your heart. bodyhealthandsoul.com doug@dougdgordon.com

Ursula Schloer I’ve experienced many moments in my life when I felt unified with somebody, or in general, with a unity consciousness. As a child, I was mostly out in nature, going alone into the forest and meadows, watching the tiniest insects or smallest flowers, feeling at one with everything around me. When the sun rays came through the tree tops, I was completely in awe. I have a joy and zest for life which has hardly left me, ever, even in the most challenging situations. I now live in Northern Leitrim, by a lake, where unspoiled nature is all around me. No traffic, no artificial sounds, no light pollution. I feel very fortunate that this home came to me as I had imagined. As a mother, I can say that holding my own babies in my arms also gave me a total sense of unity with those tiny beings for whom I had been a portal to come into this world. Find Ursula on Facebook at Gaia Harmonie

Ashen Tennege Mine is a story of love and destiny. Born in the mountains of Sri Lanka, raised on the seashores of the Seychelles, I find myself in Ireland. I came here to finish off my degree, which I managed to do. Then the coronavirus hit, and I have been floating around since then. I have always lived life to the full, appreciating every moment. I was born Buddhist – therefore, I followed its philosophy. As time passed, I started to connect with every coincidence and every twist of fate, which is how I found myself in the mountains of Wicklow. There, I found the heart of my heart, in both a physical and spiritual sense. I found the love of my life, and she became a reflection of this planet: all the beauty, the design and the pain. A sunset, the moon, the dew on the leaves, the songs of the birds, the roar of thunder – all had her embedded into it. Flowing with this love in my heart, I found myself and connected to the truth of life. ash.tennege666@gmail.com

Maria Connolly I discovered that there were higher levels of consciousness, healing and feeling when I started learning the Wim Hof Method in 2015. That brought me to plant medicine a couple of years ago, and this is when I really began to se the world differently. I had only ever heard of a universal consciousness, loving everyone unconditionally and feeling connected to absolutely everything. I had heard that we are everything and nothing at the same time (God). I could understand this concept on an intellectual level, but I didn’t really identify with it. Plant medicine gave me actual experiences of these states, which taught me so much. Basically, judgment and fear keep us away from the love and connection we can feel with anyone, at any time. One specific time when I felt a sense of unity with another was when I met my partner. We hugged after a ceremony, and I knew that he was the man I would marry. breathewell.ie mariaconnollyhealth.com

Rob Hough For the best part of a decade, I undertook many mind-altering meditative adventures – from cold breathwork journeys in Iceland, to the sweltering heat of the Amazon, working with plant medicines, and everything in between. Each, to their merit, had varying degrees of success, but there was still an eluding void within, which left me feeling spiritually disconnected and too immersed in the rational mind. It wasn’t until late 2018 when I had my most significant breakthrough. After a close friend of mine sadly passed away, a series of profound synchronicities ignited a new life force in me, which has had paradigm-shifting consequences. I’ve now surrendered my life now to a higher calling unfolding in each moment, bringing me a sense of unity with all that is. I now thrive on turning my passion into purpose, through coaching and galvanising others to unlock their true potential: harnessing the powers of collaboration, synchronicity and flow. . soulsync.life

Noirin Roper I feel the strongest sense of unity and connection to the world around me when I walk the land of my ancestors. Though raised in a different area, this part of the world is where I feel rooted, where I belong. As I trace the route that my uncle Batty walked to my granduncle’s cottage on Christmas day 1984, a few days before he died, I feel that connection most strongly. I have been led to read and explore the connections we have with our ancestors, examining ancestral trauma and unexplained events that pass down the generations. For example, in my own family, my father lost his sibling at an early age. Similarly, I lost my brother at the age of two and my daughter lost her brother – three generations of the same family experienced the loss of a sibling and the parents suffered the loss of a child. Coincidence, some karmic pattern or a challenge to heal unresolved ancestral grief ? What was it like to stand in my mother’s shoes, my grandmother’s shoes, my great grandmother’s shoes? What were their strengths and weakness, and what were their unfulfilled desires that I may carry today? These are all questions that I ask myself. spproper@outlook.ie

POSITIVE PARENTING

“‘Children have a keen inborn sense of justice. They are built to protest loudly when they or someone else is being treated badly.”

12

cultivate respect PARENTING FOR UNITY AMONG ALL PEOPLE. by Patty Wipfler Children are not, by nature, racist. Nor are they born with damaging assumptions about people in any definable group. Racism is learnt behaviour, stemming from fear and a feeling of being separate. Children don’t relate to the concept of racial identity until they are eight to ten years old. We all begin with a winning trust in others, an expectation that people will be good to each other, and that life with others will be safe and fun. When a child feels close to his parents, gets to play freely with lots of laughter, gets plenty of affection, and has sensible limits set by grown-ups who don’t attack him, a young person can feel at home with himself, and relaxed with others. Contrary to popular belief, children have a keen inborn sense of justice. They are built to protest loudly when they or someone else is being treated badly. This sense of justice runs deep. You probably can remember times in your childhood when you or someone you cared about was attacked, verbally or physically. You didn’t have to be told that this treatment was wrong and should be stopped immediately. You just knew it in your gut. We don’t have to teach children respect for people of other races and abilities. We simply need to preserve their trust in themselves and others, and their inborn sense of justice. If a child feels safe and strong, he will respond with indignation to racism, whether it’s directed at him or at someone else. He will know that the racist attitude he has witnessed is wrong, and won’t adopt it as his own. Children are able to retain their keen sense of justice if they are treated with respect. Respectful treatment that inoculates a child against racism means several very specific things:

• A child is appreciated for who they are, regardless of what they can or can’t do. • A child is not typecast. Generalisations like “shy,” “loud,” “bossy,” are not used, and put-downs like “bratty,” “whiny,” and “stupid” are also off-limits. • A child’s curiosity is supported. When questions are asked about why people look or act the way they do, those questions are warmly answered at a level the child can understand. In other words, it’s okay to be interested in all aspects of being human. • The child is not compared to others, and judgments like “bad,” “good,” “better,” and “best” aren’t used to classify them or other people. This means, for instance, that when asked why some people are sent to jail, a parent would explain that those people have done something seriously hurtful to someone else, not that those are bad people. • The child is not intimidated for having upsets about the things that matter to them. In particular, the child is allowed to express feelings with crying, tantrums, and “freedom of the mouth” while crying or tantruming. You, as parent, will often set limits that upset your child. That’s your job, and it’s an important one. However, your child’s job is then to blast away the bad feelings that those limits bring forth, so they can recover their sense that you care and that life is a good. When a child cries, has a tantrum, or storms in response to a limit, he is using an inborn healing process. Your child needs your attention while they get rid of awful feelings.

• The child is not hit, slapped, threatened with physical attack, shamed, or blamed. These kinds of attacks by adults leave big emotional scars on children, and impress them with the notion that some people deserve to be called “bad” and then mistreated. In short, what makes children vulnerable to racism is to treat children like we are better than they are, we know better than they do, we are more important than they are, and our feelings have more validity than their feelings. Instead, we need to guide them with respect for their intelligence, whether they are acting intelligently at the moment or not. The most powerful model we can provide is to reach out and get to know people who are different from us. White people can encourage each other and be listeners for each other in these efforts. People of colour can support each other, too, and listen to the pain and the memories of bad experiences that will inevitably arise as steps toward friendship are bravely taken. Friendship—relaxed, unguarded human contact—is at the heart of undoing racism and every other “ism.”

POSITI V E AT TR ACTION

alignment UNITING THOUGHTS WITH DESIRES. by Judith McAdam Did you ever listen to your internal chatter? You know what I mean: that nonstop, incessant chit-chat that never really ends. I try to pay particular attention to my internal dialogue, because I know that this inner voice is creating my outer reality all the time. When your thoughts are in conflict with what you want to create, you are blocking yourself from moving forward. For example, over the years I have had many people come to me wanting to create a lover, children and a home.

“Your intuition is like your internal navigation system: when you listen, you will get to your destination every time.”

14

But when we sit and talk about it, their internal dialogue runs something like this: ‘I’d love to bring someone nice into my life, but I don’t know how that’s going to happen, I go from work to home, and there is no way I’m going on one of those dating sites. Anyway, I could do with losing some weight first!’ And on it goes: that constant dribble that never stops. Basically, we spend more time creating momentum about what we DON’T want instead of unifying our thoughts around what we DO want. As that old saying goes, we want both our thoughts and our desires to sing from the same hymn sheet! Here’s a little exercise you can do today. Observe your thoughts. Listen to your internal chatter. When you hear yourself saying ‘I’d love to, but…’ stop yourself from going any further. Ask

yourself what’s the ‘but’ for, then throw in a new, more positive thought. For example, you say to yourself, ‘I’d love to get that promotion, but they are probably looking for someone who has more experience’. Catch yourself and change the thought. ‘Yes, maybe they are looking for someone with more experience, but I’m actually very good at what I do and they may need someone with more of my skillset.’ Or you might say ‘I’d love to go on that holiday with the girls, but I’d never be able to afford it’. Again, catch yourself and change that thought: ‘F’CK IT, I’m going to go on that holiday. I don’t know how I’m going to do it yet, but I will.’ Using an emphatic word like F’CK IT impresses something different on your mind. Saying ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do it yet, but I will’ opens you up to possibility and allows you to unite with the things you really do want to create in your life. That’s what I do in my life all the time. If I catch myself saying ‘I can’t’, or ‘but’, I stop, change the thought and open everything up. I also ASK. I ask to be shown. I always say: ‘show me, how I am going to do that?’ Then the trick is to listen to my intuition and follow it. I create everything in my life by unifying my thoughts with what I actually do want, then using all of these tools to do it. This year, I created my own beautiful Lover and my own jewellery range that started off as a little spark in the womb of my mind. Now it’s turned into @imperfectionthebrand, which I co-run with my lovely business partners Erin McGregor and Anna Fahy. Try it yourself for a month or two, and you will be absolutely amazed at the results. I know I am, all the time.

It is also the longest night of the year and marks the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. This transformative rite of passage presents us with a great opportunity to release, create, and embrace the healing power of darkness. It is our natural inclination to reach for the warm, life-giving energy of the light, especially if we have been immersed in a period of darkness. However, leaning into this season of darkness creates an openness in our soul to receive joy, wholeness, and dynamic healing. At the Winter Solstice, the sun changes course and begins to move in a new direction. It’s a perfect time to think about the course of your life and decide whether you, too, are ready to change direction. We will prime ourselves with healing rest by tuning our body patterns to the longer days of deep winter. This meaningful healing will boost our energy all winter and prepare us for Spring’s abundant energy. As a Celtic Priestess, I have discovered that my intention to seek holistic healing through nature has proven invaluable. The Celtic Wheel of the Year is a beautiful guide and invitation to align our internal and external rhythms with Mother Nature’s. We learn that time is cyclical, and therefore includes death and rebirth. Each festival on the Celtic Wheel is a point that encourages us to look to nature and pay attention to its teachings. When we work with these natural pauses, we have a chance to consider our lives and choices in a way that syncs with the energies of the earth.

16

The Goddess of the Winter Solstice is the Cailleach. Cailleach means “the veiled one.” Cailleach is the Gaelic word for a hag or crone. Cailleach appears as a crone who brings winter with her and who wields incredible power over life and death. She is the personification of land and nature. Invite Cailleach into this sacred time of the Winter Solstice and see what wisdom she has to share with you.

Winter Solstice Ritual Beloved, the following ritual will guide you into an intentional moment of reflection. Take time to complete this exercise, unrushed and uninterrupted. You will need: • shawl | candle | lighter • During the Winter Solstice, sit outside wrapped in your shawl for nourishment. • Light the candle. See the light continue to shine in the darkness. • Take deep cleansing breaths. • Connect with the sacredness of this time that your ancestors deemed holy for thousands of years. • Softly gaze at the flame to acknowledge the sun’s rebirth. • Offer blessings to your ancestors and generations to come. • Ask that you may shine brightly, be filled with strength, peace, integrity, and sovereignty.

“What things beyond your physical senses have been surfacing, asking to be seen and heard?” Winter Solstice Questions To Reflect Upon Here are some powerful questions for self-discovery to guide you during this transitional time of the Winter Solstice: • What things beyond your physical senses have been surfacing, asking to be seen and heard? • How can I commit to being still to listen? • In what area can I extend forgiveness to myself ? How can I explore the need to forgive others? • What are some of the best decisions I made this year? • How is my body yearning for rest, and how can I honour those needs?

For those that live in Ireland, we are blessed to have sacred sites that align with the Winter Solstice. I highly recommend taking some time to visit: • • •

sovereignty within unity 3 QUESTIONS TO FIND ONENESS IN A DIVIDED WORLD. by Sandy Newbigging

There has never been a time or will be a time when you are not one with everything.”

18

When my friends at Positive Life magazine asked me to write about ‘Unity’, I was both excited and daunted; it is such a big topic. With the dictionary defining unity as ‘the state of being unified or joined as a whole’, and with so much division in the world, it can appear an impossible task to ever ‘re-join’ humanity as a whole. The good news is, you don’t have to spend years trying to convince everyone that ‘we are all one’. Instead, the beating heart of humanity resides within every one of ‘us’, and by letting go of our own illusions of being an isolated individual, we can quickly reveal and return to the ever-present living experience of oneness within. I’ve seen how the more we believe we are separate, the more stressed, scared and alone we become. On the other hand, as we learn how to exist as a sovereign being, while also knowing and experiencing our unity with everyone and everything, the more peaceful, fearless and connected we are. Here are three questions and spiritual insights for anyone wanting to make the shift from feeling separate, to finding the wonderful oneness that permeates every part of our Self and existence.

Question 1. What if who you think you are doesn’t exist? Spiritual Insight Summary: You are the permanently present universal Self that exists beyond the temporary individual identities conjured up by the thinking mind. Most people are having an identity crisis because they believe they are someone or something that, in reality, they are not. They think they are the voice in their head and, as a result, rely on what it says to an unhealthy degree for defining who they are and what they’re capable of. They think they are what they emotionally feel. They think they are their body, having identified with it from an early age. Or they think they are their relationship status, job title, religious affiliation... or the other labels they’ve found to help define who they are. The more we believe in these labels, the more we tend to slip into separation and start living under the illusion of individualism. However, as we wake up to recognition that these mind-made labels don’t really exist in reality, we naturally experience the onenessinfused consciousness within that always exists.

Question 2. What if you need to be willing to be nobody? Spiritual Insight Summary: The ego needs to be a separate somebody - to be important and gain possessions, praise and prestige. Your real Self has no-body and is one with everything. The ego is a collection of thoughts from which

we gain our identity and, therefore, our sense of a separate self. The ego can be very convincing at telling us who we are. When on a spiritual path, it is vital that we are willing to let go of any and all mental constructs that create the impression of being a separate somebody. The ego is petrified of not existing and will go to great lengths to try to convince us that if we let go of the ideas of who we think we are, then our demise will soon follow. In the simplest of terms, to awaken to oneness, be willing to be nobody. There’s no need to worry - when you let go of the ego-based ideas of the separate, mind-made self, you experience the love and wholeness of the unified-real Self.

Question 3. What if you are not an individual you? Spiritual Insight Summary: You are one with source, life, nature, ‘God’. When you know and experience oneness, all of your ego-fueled fears, identities, and conflicts can finally fall away. Separation is a mind-made illusion that stems from believing you are the voice in your head that sounds like you. If there is a separate ‘me’ then there’s a separate ‘you’, and a separate external ‘life’. But here’s what you need to know about that voice in your head and your mind-made version of being a separate self; it is just a bunch of thoughts. By letting go of our thoughts, and rediscovering inner stillness and silence - the natural by-product of not identifying in your mind - what naturally remains is an effortless experience of unity. There has never been a time or will be a time when you are not one with everything. As you let go of who you think you are, the one consciousness that connects and lives with all of ‘us’ is revealed. By withdrawing your attention from your ego-mind, to instead be fully attentive to the presence of the present moment, your attention becomes aligned with source, life, nature, God. You discover that separation was just an idea and the reality at the heart of life is oneness. Experiencing unity leads to gentleness, compassion, peace and freedom. You never fear being alone and never need to prove yourself as better, wiser or more special. You see the world with clarity through compassionate eyes – full of love and wisdom. You discover that the ultimate love affair in life is oneness with the still silent infinite presence of the unified Self.

TEEN SPIRIT

building

unity NURTURE CLOSE CONNECTIONS.

by Margot Tubbiolo Unity is all around us. We see it in everyday life without even thinking about it: a sports team coming together to play a match, a group project that you’re doing in school, going to a party. All of these are examples of human connection, which is essentially what unity is. I have a theory that everyone craves this feeling of belonging. However, I want to talk about what keeps people from uniting. Personally, I never liked being part of a team when I was younger. I always wanted to do things alone. One example of this was how I disliked team sports. I played tennis when I was a kid, because I told myself that I wasn’t meant for a team. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve figured out why I had this thought process. I didn’t want to let anyone down. Letting myself down was okay, but I was terrified by the thought of anyone relying on me in any capacity. I hope some people can relate to what I’m saying, otherwise I’m just exposing myself for nothing! However, I’m going to keep going anyway. I have sometimes found that this thought process has stopped me from making friends. I think a lot of teens will relate to this. As young people, friends play a huge part in our life. Some people overstimulate themselves by having loads of friends, but no meaningful connections. Others understimulate by isolating themselves or

20

building emotional walls, because they are afraid people won’t like who they are. I’ve done both, and there’s no shame in it. As people, we just want to feel understood, and the way you do that is by finding a

“Unity comes in all shapes and sizes, so find your way of feeling connected.” balance, somewhere in between these two options. About two years ago, I had very few people I could call friends. I isolated myself for so long, that when I started becoming involved in life again, I told myself I was going to make loads of friends. This seems like a good thing, but when this ideology is masked by the fear of everyone leaving you, that’s when it becomes unhealthy. I wanted loads of people in my life, so I wouldn’t have to become reliant on anyone. I associated friendship with being let down, and no one likes being hurt. I remember telling myself, going into fifth year, that I didn’t want to be apart of a friend group. I wanted loads of individual friends, so I wouldn’t have to depend on one group of people to make me feel cared for. I wanted to do that for myself, but what I didn’t realise was that I

could have both. When I was going through life not looking for a friend group, I organically started to hang out with two people I go to school with. I didn’t have any expectations – just that I liked their company. However, in the beginning, I was still in that mindset of convincing myself not to rely on anyone, so I kept a safe distance. That way, I wouldn’t be hurt. I was protecting myself, but also starving myself of the simple pleasures in life. At one point, I gave in to my fears. It took a lot of time and trust, but it was the best thing I ever did. I never thought I’d have a support system like I do now. I accepted the possibility of being abandoned, and through giving into that thought, I found the people who understand me. If you’re in a similar position to the situation I was in two years ago, see it as your fresh start. Honestly, it’s very exciting, because you can build your support system from the ground up. You decide who’s worthy of being in your life. Unity comes in all shapes and sizes, so find your way of feeling connected. Whether that’s being involved in a team, talking and making connections with new people, coming together with family, or going on a walk with someone you love. Unity isn’t an option, it’s a necessity.

POSITIVE PERSONALITY

the frequency

shift

A CONVERSATION WITH WENDY KENNEDY.

by Aisling Cronin Interviewed by Paul Congdon

22

Wendy Kennedy is a world-renowned intuitive, empath, and channel. For over two decades, she has used her gifts and abilities to work with beings in other realms and dimensions. Wendy first began channelling in 1995 – primarily with her own angelic guides – before becoming acquainted with The 9th Dimensional Pleiadian Collective, whom she now channels at her public events and in private sessions. In addition to the Pleiadians, Wendy works with beings from Sirius, Lyra, and Arcturus, as well as other higher dimensional beings. The clear and compassionate wisdom shared through Wendy facilitates a shift in perspective: helping listeners to move away from a state of separation and limitation, towards connection and multidimensional awareness. Her work as a channeller has helped her to gain a deep understanding of the great shift humanity is currently experiencing.

During a recent event with Wendy, we explored what it means to live at a higher frequency. On the development of her channelling abilities, Wendy said, ‘I started doing this in the Nineties. It was very gradual. When I first began to work with my guides, I would do automatic writing: writing down everything I heard from them. But this soon became cumbersome. I was told to put down the pen and just speak what I was hearing. They were waiting for me to begin channelling verbally. Once I allowed the words to flow, that’s when the Pleiadian Collective came in. I’m on year twenty-six of working with them now!’ We asked Wendy about frequency, and what it truly means to ‘live at a higher frequency’. How can we walk upon the Earth at this time and maintain an elevated, optimistic frequency? On a simple level, Wendy explains, the process of inhabiting a frequency of our choice entails a willingness to practice it. One example of such a practice method would be verbal affirmation: repeating the words ‘I am peace, I am love’, and simply allowing ourselves to sink into that state. ‘It is about practice,’ Wendy comments. ‘The higher end of the frequency spectrum – love, peace, joy, bliss – those are the states all of us are generally seeking. The process of experiencing it is as simple as imagining it. Just imagine how it would feel to be those things you want to be. This is easier if you just work with one or two frequencies at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself !’ ‘So if it’s peace that you want, or maybe connection, make a habit of checking in with yourself, every day, to see whether you’re consciously imagining that sense of peace or connection.’ ‘If you are aware that you’re not feeling the way you’d like to feel – for example, if you had a difficult conversation with your boss, and you’re

now feeling tense and defensive – take a moment to breathe. Come back to centre. Reset yourself. Then ask yourself again, how would it feel to be connected? You just keep doing that throughout the day – keep checking in. Then at the end of the day, take stock and see how you experienced connection.’ Wendy emphasises the importance of recognising the way our desired emotions present themselves in our lives – even if they didn’t present themselves in the exact way we hoped they would. ‘Maybe you didn’t meet the love of your life today,’ she suggests, ‘but you did enjoy a wonderful, supportive conversation with a friend, or you spent time in nature and felt deeply connected to it. Notice that. Honour that.’

“Take a moment to breathe. Come back to centre. Reset yourself. Then ask yourself again, how would it feel to be connected?” Gratitude is one of the quickest methods of accelerating our frequency. ‘Sometimes, what we want isn’t actually what we want,’ Wendy remarks with a smile, ‘because if we got it, we might just say to ourselves, hmmm, no. This isn’t good enough. I need something more. Know that you’re getting exactly what you need in every single moment. The sense of gratitude and appreciation you feel when you notice that will ultimately reinforce your desire to continue emitting that frequency.’ The chaos in our world at present can only go so far before we are pulled back to unity and coherence, according to spiritual guidance that Wendy has received. ‘It’s easy to worry that our planet is going to devolve, but my guides have always told me, no. Things are not going to go that far. Our process of evolution is too important to the Universe to be allowed to fail. There are so many beings who are helping us, guiding us and willing us on. At the same time, we do have to learn our lessons and move through our challenges with grace. Becoming more aware of the frequencies we are holding is one of the best ways to do that.’

POSITIVE TANTR A

perfect

union FREEING THE SEXUAL CENTRE. by Dawn Cartwright

24

“When we have released our armouring, we are in perfect union – within ourselves, with our beloved, and with life itself.”

The experience of oneness in sex is the goal of almost every lover. It is an experience, effervescent with pulsation, that connects us to ourselves, each other and everything around us. Wilhelm Reich, a revolutionary Viennese psychiatrist who transformed psychoanalysis in the 1920s and 30s, described this pulsation in his character analysis work. According to Reichian therapist, Sean Haldane, “Wilhelm Reich identified pulsation as the basic life function, experienced most intensely in orgasm.” Pulsation is our natural state, the state of living tension-free. Reich identified seven segments of the human body where tensions, once released, give way to full body ecstasy and the return of this pulsation. Reich called these tensions “armouring.” They are an adaptation created in the body to shield the individual from the painful juxtaposition of one’s natural state and societal expectation. The release of these tensions frees the individual, bringing them back to themselves and back into synchrony with the omniscient pulsation that unites us all. The first segment identified by Reich is the ocular segment. Armouring around the eyes makes it difficult for us to truly “see” one another. Our perceptions become fixed – we see the world not as it is, but as we have grown to see it through our own projections. Our sexual energy is limited because we’ve lost our ability to love in real time - we are stuck in the past. When this armouring dissolves, our eyes are full of light, and our interactions, warm and sensing. We “see” ourselves and “see” others as they truly are. The second segment is the oral segment. Armouring around the lips and mouth make it challenging for us to receive the physical and emotional nourishment that is possible in sexual activity. We are “tight-lipped” and our jaw is compressed, making sexual pleasure nearly impossible. We feel angry and defiant, unconsciously daring others to come close; suspicious of their motives. When our oral segment is open, we feel nourished – not only in sex, but in our very existence. The third segment of armouring is the cervical segment, the throat. This segment is important in the expression of our feelings. When we are armoured in the cervical segment, we hold back our true emotions, skate on the surface of intimacy and find ourselves unable to communicate in ways that create closeness. We are unable to effectively communicate our feelings and desires. When the cervical segment is open, we express our sexual desires with ease. We find pleasure in communicating intimately. According to this model, tensions are released and pulsation restored, one segment after the other, from the head to the pelvis. The next segment is the thoracic segment, the area

surrounding the heart. When this segment is armoured, there is tightness in our way of being. We hold back physical affection and withhold our longing. It is difficult for our partners to sense when or how to approach us. When our thoracic segment is open, we feel the melting feelings of intimacy. We reach out for warmth and affection. Below the thoracic segment is the diaphragmatic segment. This segment separates the upper part of the body from the lower part of the body and the pelvis. It is the gateway between love and sex. It is the solar plexus region, responsible for our vitality and breath. When we are armoured in this segment, our breathing is constricted and there can be a feeling of “we’re great friends, but there’s no spark” or “we have great chemistry, but no real love.” When this segment is open, love and sex become a unified experience. The next segment, the abdominal segment, aligns with the enteric nervous system, the “gut brain.” Armouring in this segment inhibits our connection to our intuitive intelligence. Tension here can put us in a perpetual state of “fight or flight,” causing intense anxiety in intimate situations. Individuals who experience great amounts of armouring in this segment may feel overwhelmed in situations where physical closeness is imminent. When this segment is tension-free, we trust our intuition, live from our parasympathetic nervous system, and intimacy is restorative. The last segment, the pelvic segment, is the powerhouse that enlivens every other segment of the body. When this segment is armoured, vulnerability is absent. There is a lack of pleasure and satisfaction in the sexual experience. When the pelvic segment is open and flowing, sex is fulfilling. Our bodies pulse with ecstatic energy. According to Reichian therapist, Dr. Patricia Frisch, “This permits the pelvis to move naturally, and waves of energy or streaming can be felt throughout the body causing a pleasurable, expansive sensation.” When we have released the armouring we’ve created to protect ourselves from the pressures of the world we live in, we are in perfect union – within ourselves, with our beloved, and with life itself. shift FRAMING YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS FOR 5D by Alison McEvoy Interviewed by Paul Congdon

We spoke with Rebecca Dawson recently and had a very illuminating conversation about the human body, dimensional shifts and the power of not choosing – dive on in!

About Rebecca All human beings are amazingly unique. Not only that, but each human mission on earth is also one-of-a-kind. Talking to Rebecca, her sense of this sublime creativity at work on Earth is palpable and she herself embodies her uniqueness so courageously. As a child, Rebecca came into the world with memories about what she had done before and who she had been. She could see energy fields, into the human body and could see each human blueprint of existence. Her mother, it seems, played a pivotal role in her carrying this consciousness forward into adulthood by encouraging her, and teaching her, to embrace her difference. “My mother got me into meditation classes when I was nine years old. I learnt how to use and move energy...at eighteen I had become the person to go to for counselling among friends, family and friends of the family...” One day she was doing a counselling type session with someone and she had “a huge expansive feeling and suddenly it wasn’t me taking anymore and it felt like I was over there, watching it.” In this spontaneous way, Rebecca became a channeller for Serapis Bay. Later, St Germain and Kuthumi began to express through her.

The Body-Portal As Rebecca sees it, the human being, by nature, is “multidimensional”. The body is our portal to all that is. We have no other way, but the body, and through it we experience life and all its dimensions. “The body is the temple. It is the

base of our consciousness. It is our access point for consciousness. We go here when we meditate and we find God here...There is nothing holier than the human body.” We don’t experience our body like this most of the time, but that too is changing; “We are going through a paradigm shift to bring us into more awareness of our multidimensionality. We are moving from one particular reality, with all its laws of how things work, to another.” If we are to make the shift, it requires an expansion of consciousness beyond the containment of the functioning of the 3rd dimension.

Making the shift (rather, the shift makes you) You know you are part of this shift when the strategies for making things happen that used to work for you, stop working. You are using 3D strategies while entering a 5D reality, where the same mechanics of existence don’t apply. It can look like you are losing your ability to achieve, manifest and create. It can feel frustrating and like your life is a failure. This is not the case. Instead, you can support the change by letting go, allowing a breakdown of systems that used to work and not relying on them anymore. Now...you may dive deeper into the new dimension by entering into a state of not knowing and not choosing...

Don’t choose, don’t lose Duality is a stand-out feature of the 3D world. Things are experienced as one

thing, and not another. They cannot be both - both good or bad, desirable or undesirable, possible or impossible. These are identified as opposites and are set apart from one another. As we enter 5D reality, these dualities start to merge. This happens in us, in our body, in our experience of them and our feelings and attitudes towards them. We stop experiencing the world as divided into good/bad, light/dark, desirable/undesirable etc. “The frontiers of duality are coming together in the body...It’s opposition coming together in the human form.” When humans learn a new way – to not choose – we are rocketed forth into a whole new world of possibilities for creation and living. “In the world of duality we think we have a choice,” says Rebecca. In fact, “every choice you make in 3D is a sacrifice...an opportunity lost...we stream and narrow our focus in such a way and we think it’s choice!” “You go into a restaurant with a huge menu, and you think what great choices you have. But in the end you have to choose one entrée, one main and one dessert. You have to choose what you don’t want to decide what you do want...in 5D it’s like a buffet...you have a bit of everything, you don’t have to choose.”

The doorway is CHOOSING NOT TO CHOOSE. The attitude is one of, “I don’t know what I want. I’m choosing not to choose between this or that...what else is there?” “It takes us out of the sacrificial way of choosing and something just opens and

“I don’t know what I want. I’m choosing not to choose between this or that...what else is there?”

you see a whole new set of possibilities that you couldn’t have imagined you could have.” “If you go into the ‘I don’t know...’ whatever arises is going to be new.” This is a hugely exciting piece of news to us who love to visualize and manifest. There is an end to the struggle of trying to imagine every little detail of the life you would love...and end to trying to fit your dream life into the ideas that already exist because your thoughts cannot attain anything truly new in 3D reality. This is the beginning of a new reality, new ideas and new possibilities. It is a return to our essence as creative beings. We are not here to recycle old thoughts and ideas and re-live old patterns of life; “We are here to usher in newness. We are creative beings and we are meant to be creating.”

5D reality “When human consciousness shifts away from what’s on offer and into what is possible, all the energy that was poured into sustaining the reality of earth as we know it is taken away...” This 3D reality, without the sustaining energy of human focus and thought, will be transformed into 5D where RESONANCE is the key to creating and manifesting. “If you have a great sense of satisfaction or joy with something, or clarity about something from deep within you, from beneath belief, it begins to appear in your reality..because of our magnetic core...so things get created out of vibration rather than intention...from what is arising in my consciousness and wishes to be expressed.”

liposomes SETTING THE STANDARD Altrient has pioneered the use of Liposomal Encapsulation Technology in the food supplement industry, utilising this cutting-edge delivery system to achieve vitamin absorption levels never thought possible through an oral preparation. Abundance and Health, distributors of Altrient, are dedicated to educating the industry and consumers about the benefits of true liposomal products and setting industry standards. Liposomes are clever little phospholipid carrier bubbles with a double layered, parallel set of closed membranes, resembling real cell membranes. Liposomes can encapsulate vitamin C and other nutrients, offering protection from destructive stomach acid and digestive enzymes as they travel through the digestive system. These vitamin-filled liposomes are able to make it, intact, to the small intestine where they get absorbed efficiently into the body’s circulation, moving through the bloodstream and then to the cells. Once it is in circulation it stays there for longer, slowly releasing its nutrient contents over a period of time. Most impressively, when the liposomal vitamin meets another bilayer membrane, i.e. a cell, the two bilayer membranes fuse together and the vitamin is delivered.

There are lots of boxes in your health-food store these days with the word liposome on them. Dr Thomas Levy, cardiologist, vitamin C expert and consultant for LivOn Labs, says: “Liposomal supplements are a fascinating technology for delivering maximized absorption, but ‘buyer beware’, there is more fraud in liposomal supplements than in any other type of supplement I have seen. Taking a product that you believe to be liposomal but isn’t deprives people of the absorption benefits of true liposomal vitamin C...Making a high-quality, high-tech, liposomal vitamin C is not a fast, easy, cheap or simple process.” You can make sure that you are getting the gold standard in liposomes by checking for the following 4 things: 1. A sk to see proof of liposomes in the form of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis. This is the only way to be able to clearly see and define the bilayer structure of the liposomes. 2. A Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) analysis will not be able to tell you whether a product contains liposomes or not.

3.

4.

Look into the manufacturer’s testing procedures and independent clinical trials. Look into the manufacturer’s quality assurance – third party verification.

Abundance and Health, the distributors and e-tailers of Altrient and LivOn Labs who make the products have been leading the way in research and formulation of liposomal vitamin supplements, using a patented process, for nearly two decades and take quality very seriously. They adhere to some of the most demanding quality and safety standards in the industry, to ensure consumers are getting the gold standard in vitamins and that they feel the difference. “We are proud of our scientific heritage and believe in an ethically-led approach to marketing. Our claims are backed by robust scientific evidence and quality testing, including double-blind placebo-controlled trials, which is why we are confident in the quality and efficacy of our supplements.”

GOOD LIFE 2.0

beyond unity

embracing symbiosis REDIRECTING OUR COURSE ON PLANET EARTH. by Davie Philip

`There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew’ Marshall McLuhan The spaceship earth metaphor is a powerful one for the times we are in. Our dominant way of life has severely undermined our planet’s life support systems and, just when we need unity to collectively take action, we have never been more divided or apathetic. Let’s zoom out and take a wider perspective.... We find ourselves hurtling through space on an incredibly complex and fragile living planet that is billions of years old. As far as we know, spaceship earth is the only place in the universe that sustains life. Our species emerged six million years ago, with our modern form evolving about 200,000 years ago. We began to cultivate and breed plants and animals around 12,000 years ago, and embarked on transforming our natural landscapes through agriculture. Our settlements became more permanent, which led to the growth of civilizations. Around 500 years ago a mechanistic worldview emerged in European societies that viewed the world as a machine with separate parts, and us as selfish individuals detached from each other and nature. This mindset gave rise to the industrial revolution and during a relatively short

30

period of human history our growthaddicted, industrial-technological civilisation globalised its impact. With nature under our control, and then super charged on fossil fuels, we exploited, colonised, enclosed commons, increased energy use, expanded our populations and grew our economies - massively. There is a name for this period of our planet’s history: the “Anthropocene”, or the “age of man.” We have now become the dominant force of ecological change, undermining the health of spaceship earth at an ever-increasing pace. In the last 40 years we have polluted the atmosphere and oceans, cleared forests, destroyed habitats, eroded soils and are now the main cause of extinction in plants and animals. Our anxiety, depression and inequality has also increased, and we are beginning to realise that our wellbeing and the wellbeing of the planet are inseparable. It has been proposed that the next period in human history needs to be the “Symbiocene”, derived from the Greek word for living together. This era will be characterised by the synergy of humanity and nature, informed by a deep awareness of the interconnectedness of all life. At every level life is connected. In every living system there are individual

elements — for example, the cells, organs and systems within our bodies or the different organisms in the soil. The more diverse and cooperative the parts are, the more likely it is that the whole will be healthy and resilient. Life, in order to survive, embraces symbiosis - this is the way in which organisms live together for their mutual benefit. There is a lot we can learn from the observation of how nature cooperates to help us move from being passengers to crew members, of spaceship earth. Shaping a better future will require us to; creatively restore human connectedness to the natural world; re-imagine how we live together; choose the path of sustainability and regeneration; and create a greater level of wellbeing, health, happiness and equality for everyone and all life on board.

energy, empathy and

transformation WE TALK TO LEE HARRIS. by Aisling Cronin | Interviewer: Paul Congdon

Lee Harris is a globally acclaimed energy intuitive, transformational teacher and musician. In recent years, he has become well known for his popular monthly Energy Update videos, but he has been in the spiritual field for a long time. Lee first began to perform intuitive readings in his England home in 2004. From there, he gradually built his company, Lee Harris Energy (LHE), into the multi-media worldwide event company and production house it is today. Lee now lives in California and heads a thirteen-member international team, all of whom are passionate about grounding creative spirituality into these challenging times. Lee offers practical teachings that focus on helping conscious, intuitive, and sensitive people to heal and thrive. He is also determined to see people experience impactful and abundant lives, while supporting each other through community. He is a musician and artist who believes deeply in the power of creativity for healing: his acclaimed album AWAKEN (produced with Davor Bozic) became a bestseller in November 2020. Lee’s aforementioned monthly Energy Updates have gained great popularity because they offer practical guidance for navigating daily life, and are imbued with clarity, empowerment, and optimism. These qualities are abundant within the man himself, as we learned when we interviewed him for a recent Positive Nights event. Paul: Can you tell us how your journey

“The seeds of what we end up doing in life can show up in our childhood, in the things we naturally love.”

first began? Were you always interested in metaphysical topics? Lee: Like a lot of people who are sensitive and intuitive, I think I was just seen as an average weird guy! Something felt off to me as a kid, and because I had no understanding of what that was, that feeling just turned into self-blame. ‘I’m too emotional. I feel too much.’ There was no one on hand to say to me, ‘you might be a highly sensitive person, and this is what that can look like.’ My one refuge was creativity. From a very young age, I was wired to pursue anything creative, or anything to do with communication. I often think that the seeds of what we end up doing in life can show up in our childhood, in the things we naturally love and gravitate towards. Now, my life is all about creativity and communication, as well as healing. I moved towards healing and metaphysics at the age of sixteen, when I was experiencing some difficulties in my life. I can’t remember who exactly set me on that path – I credit Oprah Winfrey and her show, in part! But I began to seek out spiritual books and other material that helped me dive into the spiritual dimension of life. My big Bible at that time was The Four Agreements (by Don Miguel Ruiz). I strongly felt the truth and purity of it. Paul: I would love to ask more about the entities you channel, called the Z’s. I believe you’ve said there are eighty-eight of them in total, and the first one that came through for you was named Zachary. Has the quality and coherence of their messages increased over time? Lee: The weirdest thing about channelling

the Z’s – and the reason it took me so long to believe it had actually happened to me – is that it was so easy then, and it’s still so easy now. The coherence, from day one, was just there. Whenever they speak through me, for the first twenty or thirty seconds, I feel as though I’m repeating sentences I can feel just above my head … but after that point, I’m no longer even aware of there being a point above my head. The information all melds into one continuous flow. I’m not unconscious – it’s more like I’m just sitting behind that flow of information, and I get to hear it. But I tend to forget 95% of what I channel shortly after it’s come through. The coherence has always been there, but definitely, the level of information I can tune into has grown as I’ve grown, and as the world has changed. With any channeller, there is a limit to how much any of us can access, depending on our own personal human limits … or depending on what we’re not supposed to know. I remember once having a conversation with a friend who’s also in the spiritual field, and she was asking questions of the Z’s. In response to one of her questions, the Z’s said, ‘We can’t talk about that, because that would take Lee completely off his path and distract him from the role he is here to serve. If we talk about that now, it will not be the right time for him.’ I did get the information two or three years later, and the Z’s said if they had given it to me any earlier, it would have freaked me out! There will always be things you don’t know and things you’re not supposed to know. I also believe that there’s always a certain level of correlation between a channel and the beings they channel – for example, someone who channels highly scientific information tends to come

“If you are an empath, your superpower is going to involve assisting with the energies and emotions of the world.”

33

34

from a scientific background themselves, so they are able to understand the very technical information being conveyed. In my connection with the Z’s, I notice

“Find a meditation or healing practice that helps you to ‘reset’ on any given day, even if you sometimes get knocked off centre.” that the primary kind of information they channel through me is related to how we’re feeling and what we’re experiencing as we navigate through world changes. They actively hold a space for that. They say that they use my level of empathy and sensory ability, when I’m channelling for a person or a group, to monitor the volume of what they’re communicating. At the end of the day, they only want to give us information that we can successfully alchemise: information we can use to help ourselves. Paul: You’ve spoken in the past about how we can hold onto our centres, no matter what’s going on out in the world. Can you offer some advice for people who are struggling to remain at ease right now? Lee: We’re human. Even if we are tuned into spirituality – even if we have one foot in the world of energy and other dimensional realities – we must remember that the other foot is in the everyday human world. We all find things difficult, from time to time. Right now, we’re seeing

a lot of division that has been seeded by fear. What I would suggest is – without being combative or seeking to change someone else’s truth – just be honest about what you’re noticing and feeling these days. It’s important that we develop an ability to be multidimensional, in the sense of respecting all truths and understanding where others are coming from. Even if you are experiencing conflict with some people, know that things can be repaired in that relationship. Don’t get too wrapped up in the division energy. You can’t be destroyed by anything that’s now going on, provided you stay in your heart energy as a human being. This is not about spiritual bypassing or acting as though everything is love and light. It’s simply about choosing to come back to the heart, again and again. Find a meditation or healing practice that helps you to ‘reset’ on any given day, even if you sometimes get knocked off centre. Paul: I would love to ask you about empathy. I saw you interviewed Anita Moorjani recently – as did I – and I love her work on empaths. I think a lot of people are attuned to a level of sensitivity. Would you consider yourself an empath, and have you got any advice or tips you can give to other people who are empathic? Lee: I do feel I am an empath … but one thing I also feel is that not every empath is the same. We can get very linear and one-dimensional with this at times: thinking that an empath must tick certain boxes or must feel a certain way in certain situations. I think it depends on the empath! How were they raised? How are they wired? I experience myself as an energetic empath, so the energy of people is the predominant thing I tune into when I’m around them. An emotional empath, however, might be much more emotionally entangled with those around them. I was lucky enough to be having dinner with Anita three years ago when she told me the title of her new book, ‘Sensitive is the New Strong.’ The book was eighteen months away from being published at that point, but as soon as she told me the title, I got full body tingles. I knew it would be great. So often, we look at sensitives as ‘cursed’ in some way, or as having to struggle through life. But the truth is, sensitivity is a superpower. If you are an empath, your superpower is going to involve assisting with the energies and emotions of the

world, but you will find your own unique way of doing that. For one empath, the answer might be that they are an extroverted healer. For another, they might be an introverted writer. It doesn’t have to look the same for everybody, but that aspect of being connected to our feelings: that is really important. On a broader human level, our consciousness around feelings is very basic. We’re still babies when it comes to understanding the inclusion, the acknowledgement and the expression of our feelings. The better we become at that, the less we will want to fight each other. During the event, an attendee asked a brilliant question: how can we minimise the divide in society, while still honouring our truth and values? Lee: The first thing I will say is this. For me, there is one non-negotiable for me at this time: I am not willing to be attacked by anybody for having a different belief to them. If they do attack me, or are aggressive with their viewpoint, I will tell them that it can’t happen again, or we will be unable to be around each other. You have to have a non-negotiable around simple respect, especially if you yourself strive to respect those around you. A heated discussion is of no value to me unless it is transformational in nature – not just a fight for fighting’s sake. Simply acknowledging disagreement and asking whether the subject can be changed is enough to recognise the conflict energy, without becoming embroiled in it. Find a phrase that works for you, such as ‘I don’t like to fight with you – can we move on?’ Whenever someone moves out of our life for any reason, it’s important to honour our grief around that. Write down on a piece of paper – in your own words – something like ‘I invite resonant, lovable and enjoyable new friends into my life.’ Then stick it on a wall. You might see it some time later and realise you want to add a few more words. It’s very important to craft our futures in that way, knowing that we do have the ability to find our tribes and create lives that bring us joy.

POSITIVE MEDICINE

build your

defences BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THIS WINTER.

by Michelle Sanchez Keeping yourself well is essential during the colder months. The best way to keep yourself well is to boost your immune system by adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle. Reduce your toxic load, cut out junk and sugar, eat immune-boosting foods and detox your body. Gut health and lifestyle practices are essential to keeping your immune system functioning as optimally as possible.

These are the same principles taught by CNM (the the College of Naturopathic Medicine) in their Naturopathic Nutrition diploma. Naturopathy is a system of healthcare which encourages and promotes the body’s own self-healing mechanisms. The body is able to heal itself, given the right conditions and treatment.

Terrain Theory

Believe it or not, 70% of your immune system resides in the gut as lymphoid tissue. This specialised lymph tissue houses your immune cells (leucocytes, macrophages and lymphocytes), whose job is to identify any threats to your wellbeing. The large intestine hosts a community of around 100 trillion microbes. The main function of our microflora is to help us digest food (by fermenting carbohydrates), extracting the nutrients for our body to use. These beneficial microorganisms help our immune systems to work efficiently, as they protect us against pathogens. Any imbalance in your gastrointestinal system or within your gut microflora could lead to immune system issues, including inflammation

The terrain theory was the brainchild of French scientist, Antoine Béchamp. His philosophy was that disease occurs from within the body as a result of an acidic and poorly oxygenated ‘terrain’ (the body’s internal environment), rather than external factors. Béchamp suggests that bacteria and viruses are simply ‘after-effects’, rather than the cause of disease. Béchamp believed that a healthy terrain is a result of a nutritious diet, healthy lifestyle practices, hygiene, fresh air, clean water and exercise. With a healthy terrain, pathogenic germs cannot flourish and manifest into disease states. An unhealthy terrain, on the other hand, makes a person prone to infections and disease.

36

The Importance of Gut Health

and autoimmune conditions. You may also become more susceptible to viruses and bacteria. Tips to boost your immune system naturally • Cut out coffee as it can be very acidic and inflammatory. It also aggravates the gut and reduces nutrient absorption, which may compromise your immune system. Instead, drink a delicious coffee alternative. • Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption, as these toxins have a negative effect on your immune system. • Avoid soft drinks and junk food including chocolate, takeaways and convenience foods, as they are high in sugar and processed fats, disabling the immune system and contributing to toxicity. • Eat a healthy diet full of fresh organic vegetables and fruit, good quality proteins (legumes, beans, sardines, mackerel, eggs) and healthy fats (avocados, nuts, seeds). More immune boosting foods are listed below. • Reduce sugar intake including sweeteners (even the natural ones) and refined carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and pastries. Sugar negatively affects the immune system and prevents your phagocytes (the immune cells which eat up pathogenic germs) from working efficiently. • Limit pasteurised dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt) as dairy is very mucusforming and can aggravate the gut. • Reduce your toxic load by using natural cleaning products, cosmetics and beauty products. The average home contains over 62 harmful environmental toxins which we absorb through the air we breathe and the products we put on our skin. Avoid spray products, use gloves where possible, keep the house well ventilated and only use products with natural ingredients.

Detox your body • Cleanse your liver and kidneys by drinking lemon or organic, unpasteurised (raw) apple cider vinegar in warm water. • Do a colonic to clear out toxin build-up in the gut • Take liver and kidney cleansing herbs and nutrients. • Have an Epsom salt bath which helps draw out toxins from the body. • Practise dry skin brushing to eliminate toxins, improve circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system.

• Use a sauna to gently sweat out harmful toxins through the skin. • Engage in regular movement and exercise to get your body moving; movement promotes circulation and stimulates your immune system. • Stay hydrated by drinking filtered water and herbal teas. Immune-boosting foods • Garlic, ginger and turmeric • Sweet red peppers • Kiwi fruit, oranges, lemons and grapefruit

• Blueberries, strawberries, cranberries and raspberries • Leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach and chard • All brassicas – broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts • Mushrooms, especially shiitake and oyster mushrooms • Sunflower seeds and almonds • Green tea and matcha

lemons THE SEASONALITY OF CITRUS FRUITS.

by Hans Wieland

Lemons are a flavour catalyst For many of us, lemons are synonymous with sour, because besides loads of Vitamin C, the juicy flesh of the fruits contains up to 8% citric acid. After salt and pepper, lemons are the most commonly used flavouring ingredient in the Wieland kitchen; used in everything from baking to meat, fish and vegetable cookery. Lemon is said to be a flavour catalyst, meaning that it interacts with the taste buds so that the flavours that follow are more pronounced. One of my Italian friends says: “For 200 years at least, the unique, earthy and aromatic taste of sour lemon juice has been as essential to an Italian banquet as ketchup is to fast food.” The preserved lemons from northern Africa and India have recently become more widely appreciated as a condiment and many chefs love them. The fermentation process changes their aroma from bright and sharp to rich and rounded. They add an intense, concentrated lemon flavour to the dish without all the sour tartness. We always have one or two big jars in our larder.

Lemon varieties When it comes to lemons (and other citrus fruits) we are very uneducated about varieties and seasonality. This probably stems from the fact that lemons are available all year round and for the …exporting countries and their big producers, lemons are a commodity rather than a culinary produce. The world’s main producing country is Mexico, followed by India, whereas Spain is the number one exporting country of lemons. Although Spain and Italy produce nearly the same amount of lemons, Spain exports more than 70 %. The peak of production for most varieties is in the Winter months and early Spring. However, the Eureka grows year-round and abundantly, and is mostly grown in Asia and South America. This is the common supermarket lemon, also known as ‘Four Seasons’, because of its ability to produce fruit and flowers

together throughout the year. The Lisbon is the other common supermarket lemon. It is smoother than the Eureka, has thinner skin and fewer or no seeds and produces more juice than the Eureka. Meyer lemons are a hybrid variety with sweeter juice, picked mainly from November to March. The most important varieties cultivated in Spain are Verna and Fino, also the Eureka. The Femminello St. Teresa, or Sorrento, is native to Italy. This fruit’s zest is high in lemon oils. It is the variety traditionally used in the making of limoncello.

“Lemon is said to be a flavour catalyst... it interacts with the taste buds so that the flavours that follow are more pronounced.” Can we grow our own lemons? Lemon trees not only like a high intensity of light, they want to be caressed by the sun, which is a challenge even in the best of Irish summers. They thrive in temperatures of 20-30° Celsius, are an evergreen, and tolerate temperatures down to zero in the Winter. That means growing lemons in Ireland can only be done with the protection of a greenhouse or conservatory, and you will have a lesser yield. These lemon trees are best grown in pots, with the advantage that they can be moved around if necessary. After flowering, the fruits take a year to develop and you often see fruits and flowers on the tree at the same time.

at Neantóg farm. It was a three year old potted tree, aabout a foot in height with a few lemons on it, and looked very healthy, with lush green leaves. I was very excited about growing my own lemons, but also a bit sceptical. Would it really work? I positioned it in the SW corner of our conservatory and planted into a big 30 litre pot in the Summer. The tree has thrived ever since, and has now grown to about five feet, often yielding up to 30 lemons a year. We usually start harvesting after Christmas when the lemons have turned from green to yellow, due to a drop of temperature below 15 degrees C.

Buy Citrus fruits direct from the farm – Crowdfarming I can still remember the excitement when I was a child and we got our first oranges for Christmas. Now that most foods are available at any time of year, it is difficult to recall the excitement the beginning of a new season used to generate. Last year, for the first time, we bought lemons and oranges direct from the farm via the Crowdfarming website. This is an initiative where you can buy products directly from European farmers. This project is aims to provide a fairer revenue for farmers, to reduce environmental impact and to eliminate waste in the supply chain. Most if not all farms working with Crowdfarming are organic or biodynamic farms, or in conversion to organic farming owned by families. You can read their story, see which variety they grow, and pick the date of shipping, which means your lemons, oranges or mandarins are picked the day before shipping. When we opened our first box the scent was overwhelming and it almost felt like Christmas when we were little.

POSITIVE FOOD

nourish yourself WINTER INDULGENCE, DONE RIGHT.

by David and Stephen Flynn At this time of year, comfort is key. The food you eat should nourish you, body, mind and soul. This winning winter pair is sure to light you up during the darkening days.

FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE GANACHE CAKE This is a lovely healthy take on a classic chocolate ganache cake. It’s rich, it’s indulgent and it’s absolutely amazing! Refrigeration time: 3 hours Serves: 12 Ingredients 350g soaked cashews (250g before soaking) 100g coconut oil 50ml maple syrup 40ml coffee – to add another flavour dimension, use cold earl grey tea or mint tea if preferred 30ml water

150g dark choc – min. 54% cacao solids with no dairy 1 tbsp vanilla Ingredients for the top layer 150 g dark choc for the top 1 tbsp coconut oil

Method 1 Ideally, soak the cashew nuts overnight. If you don’t have time, just fill and boil the kettle and soak in boiling water for 30 minutes. Drain and rinse them. 2 Melt 150g of chocolate and 100g of coconut oil, until both are runny. In a food processor, add all the ingredients for the ganache and blend on high speed for 5 minutes, until the texture is wonderfully smooth and delicious. 3 Line an 8 inch springform tin with baking parchment. Scoop and spread this ganache filling in the pre-lined tin and spread out evenly. Put in the fridge to set for 3 hours. 4 Remove from the fridge. Using a pallet knife or butter knife, carefully cut around the cake in the springform tin. Remove the sides of the springform tin. 5 Chop 150g of dark chocolate (for the topping) into small even pieces. 6 Boil the kettle, fill a small pot (1/3 full) with boiling water, and put on medium heat. Put 100g of the chopped dark choc and 1 tbsp of coconut oil into a bowl that allows heat to transfer, such as a metal or glass bowl. Allow the mixture to melt. 7 Once it is all melted, remove from the heat and add in the remaining 50g of chopped chocolate slowly at a time. Mix until all is melted. This will ensure that your melted chocolate is thick enough that – when added to the firm ganache cake – it will weep down the sides, giving you a beautiful look. The addition of the coconut oil ensures that the chocolate will be easy to slice through, and won’t snap. 8 Pour the melted chocolate slowly and gently on top of the ganache cake. Gently spread it around, ensuring that some parts dip over the edge to give the appearance of chocolate weeping down the sides. 9 Decorate the top with any extra ingredients you like: chopped pistachio, raspberry, rose petals, etc. 10 Best served in small slices, as it’s so rich, and kept in the fridge, so it holds its form. Enjoy!

CHANA MASALA WITH EASY GRAM FLOUR DOSA Chana masala is a delicious snack and street food from Northern India, and often comes with flatbreads. In our version, we serve it with a dosa, which is a beautiful light pancake: traditionally made by soaking and lightly fermenting rice, then blending it into a batter. We have taken the liberty of making a simple gram flour version of a dosa so it is quicker and easier to make and gluten free and just as tasty!

Serves: 3-4 Takes: 20 minutes Ingredients: 2 x 400g tin chickpeas 2 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 large or 2 small red onions 2 large or 3 medium cloves garlic ½ thumb size piece of ginger 1.5 tbsp oil 1 tbsp garam masala 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp black pepper 1 tsp salt 50g Fresh spinach Small bunch fresh coriander (approx. 15g) Dosa: 4-6 pancakes 100g Chickpea flour 200ml oat milk or water 1 tbsp sunflower oil ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp salt

“This winning winter pair is sure to light you up during the darkening days.”

Method: 1 Peel and roughly chop the onion. Peel and finely chop the ginger and garlic cloves. Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Pick the coriander leaves and finely chop the stalks. Measure out your spices. 2 In a large flat non-stick pan, heat 1.5 tbsp of oil over a high heat. When hot, add the onions and cook for 3 minutes until they start to brown, stirring occasionally. 3 Reduce the heat to medium and add the ginger, garlic and coriander stalks. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring so the garlic does not burn. Add all the spices, mix well and cook for a minute. Add the chopped tomatoes and 1 tsp of salt. Cook for 3-4 minutes. Transfer carefully to a food processor and blend until smooth. 4 Add back into the pan, along with the drained chickpeas, and heat for 1-2 minutes. 5 To finish, add the spinach and mix through until it wilts. Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking by adding more salt, pepper, lime or chilli. 6 Add the fresh chopped coriander and set aside while you make your dosa. To make your dosa 1 Sieve the flour in a large mixing bowl. Add in the spice and mix.

Make a well in the middle and add in the milk. Use a whisk and mix well, so there are no lumps. 2 Add ½ tsp of neutral tasting oil to a medium to large (30cm) non-stick pan and wipe lightly with kitchen paper to remove any excess oil. Put on a high heat. 3 When hot, reduce to a medium heat. Use a ladle or large serving spoon to add approx 60ml, or roughly a quarter of the batter, to the pan. 4 Using the base of the ladle, spread the batter quickly and lightly around the pan to nearly cover it and make a thin pancake. Cook for 2 minutes per side, using a spatula (we like to use a silicon one) to release and turn your pancake. 5 Repeat until you have four bigger or six smaller pancakes – you can keep warm in a preheated 100º oven if needed. 6 Heat up the channa masala, serve with the dosa and enjoy! thehappypear.ie

Yoga and Ayurvedic Wisdom A CHAT WITH KELLY MARIE MILLS. by Aisling Cronin

Kelly Marie Mills is a Yoga and Ayurveda Living Educator based in Clarenbridge, Co. Galway. She offers classes, teacher training programmes, and a highly informative podcast called The Dosha Life, which covers everything you ever wanted to know about the science and art of Ayurveda. ‘I had the privilege of living in Japan as a child,’ Kelly shares, ‘and I went on many field trips to Japanese temples when I was between ten and twelve, and I think this experience greatly influenced what I went on to do later in life. I was always drawn to devotional silence and sacred space.’ Kelly explains that as an adult, she was keen to find a natural health modality that would help her to self-soothe and rebalance. This is how she came across yoga. ‘I was always searching for a way to improve digestion, too, both in myself and in my children,’ she

Angel Inspiration MESSAGES AND CREATION. by Tahnee Morgan

In May 2009, I faced a near death experience that shaped the rest of my life and kickstarted my spiritual journey. This enabled me to channel positive energy into all the pieces I create for my jewellery and wrap scarf company, 7th Heaven. As a young child I was spiritually gifted, but often repressed it, due to fear of not being accepted. My most prominent experience as a child was saying a final goodbye to my Auntie Ciss, two days after she had passed. I still remember her clutching her handbag, sitting in a blue chair across from me in my bedroom. At my young age, I was unaware that I had just seen her spirit. In disbelief, I woke my twin sister Lisa, whispering, “Ciss is here”.

“I channel positive energy into all the pieces I create” After my near death experience, my Angels and spirit guides allowed me to tap into that power I once had, to spread positivity to people around me. Every creation for 7th Heaven has been given to me from messages above, and created to guide and protect the wearer. When you are being channeled by an Angel, it is a direct message from God. The Angel is merely the messenger. There is a different sensation between receiving a message from a departed soul and from an Angel. A presence of a spirit leaves you with a heavier feeling behind you, as if they are guiding or leading you towards something, whereas the presence of an Angel is much more euphoric and fluffier, and the energy is always focused around my crown and third eye chakras. I have so many more experiences to tell and messages to give. I feel that my journey has just begun, and I have a long way to go. 7thheaven.ie info@7thheaven.ie

Vegetables, seeds and seasoning FOOD THAT PACKS A PUNCH OF NUTRIENTS. by Alison McEvoy Husband and wife team, Agnieszka and Krystian, of A&K real food, are crazy about food. Chatting to them recently spiralled into a delightful conversation about the balance of tastes, the delicate choice of seasonings and the labour of love which involves everything from peeling vegetables, hours of dehydrating...to making labels and sealing their packets of home-grown, raw and vegan produce.

“... the ingredients are so simple and the taste is so full.” Their pesto has become a best-seller in their Wicklow cafe, An Lar, and at their weekly market stand. Now, A&K plan to go nationwide with the product that has been their biggest success story...so far. It’s a pesto which walks a tightrope of sorts, explained Krystian. “It’s a tiny bit sweet, thanks to rice syrup, a bit salty and a bit sour... the idea is to balance these flavours in the right amount. The pumpkin seeds in it are activated, and give it a nutty, crunchy texture.” The pair have come up with a super tasty set of 5 varieties of ‘Breddies’; their best-selling Beetroot Vinegar, Carrot dill, Mediterranean, Red Paprika and Simply Onion. These are raw, vegan breads that are both nutrient-dense and simple - “just vegetables, seeds and seasoning.” “Customers are shocked that the ingredients are so simple and the taste is so full. Before hydrating, the packet is about 250 grams in weight. After, it is just 65 grams. You’re getting plenty of nutrients in a little snack!” I’ve been doing the taste test all week and have fallen for their breddies, activated cinnamon walnuts and carob energy bars, to name but a few of these amazing raw products. They sit so well in the stomach...giving a feeling of satisfaction, fullness and health. The textures are amazing, the tastes are nuanced and complex and downright addictive! akrealfood.ie

Time Out With Tearmann A BLISSFUL HEALING CENTRE. by Aisling Cronin In recent times, many people have realised just how vital it is for us to treat both our bodies and minds with an increased level of awareness and care. Retreat centres and walking in nature have never been more needed. With this in mind, we were enchanted to come across The Tearmann Sanctuary and Retreat Accommodation in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow: a charming venue with very comfortable accommodation, in which guests can experience true hospitality and a warm welcome. The Centre is situated right in the heart of Glendalough – the beautiful valley that has served as a refuge, a place of pilgrimage and a site of inspiration for centuries. The business was rescued from closure in an effort to continue to provide ‘a deeply memorable and long-lasting retreat experience’, as we learned during a recent conversation with founders Paschal Gannon and Susanne Bach. Paschal, a Civil Engineer, Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist, hails from a West of Ireland farming background and spent most of his career working in construction management. Susanne graduated from University College Dublin in Film Studies and spent over twenty years working in third level education, while also qualifying as a massage therapist. ‘Tearmann was set up as a Christian Spirituality retreat centre in 1993 by visionary Fr. Michael Rodgers SPS,’ Paschal revealed, ‘and because of world events last year, Fr.Michael and Sr. Breda Ahearn CP, who both lovingly ran the Centre, made the hard decision to close it down. I was overcome with the conviction that Tearmann should continue in some form or another. It represents

“Tearmann offers hospitality and a warm welcome to all of their guests.”

a deep investment in terms of both Susanne’s and my own skills and ambitions. I recognised this place could continue to be deeply impactful and soothing to many.’ ‘Guests have been coming here for years and are grateful that Tearmann has remained a retreat centre,’ Susanne adds. ‘We have diversified our programmes to welcome visitors from all faith traditions and none.’ The Tearmann Centre caters for groups and individuals who wish to take time to recharge, reflect and connect with their inner wisdom. In the serene setting of Glendalough, visitors can, according to Paschal, ‘just be!’ All of Tearmann’s programmes and activities are designed to nourish guests: exemplified by the ‘Caring for Carers’ programme, regular Sound Healing Therapy, and Pranic Healing workshops. Retreats take place in Tearmann’s beautiful newly extended meditation space overlooking the valley. Nourishing vegetarian food, if required, is catered for by The Natural Dining Table. Guests are accommodated within three comfortable self-catering apartments that grant them an opportunity for a communal or solitary retreat experience. As Paschal and Susanne put it, ‘we are blessed to be located in this most beautiful natural environment that is Glendalough’.

Having spent much time engaged in yoga and holistic healing modalities, she soon moved into a more intensive exploration of how healing can happen within the body. Through her own training and further studies, she developed a specific healing protocol that aims to enhance and improve the sensitivity of performers, thereby assisting them with their creative journey. The protocol was developed with performers in mind, but it can be used to great effect by people from all walks of life.

Inhale Connection JOSEF STEINER ON BREATHWORK. by Aisling Cronin

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about breathwork, Josef Steiner is the man to ask. Josef is a breathwork teacher and craniosacral therapist, with a background in martial arts and a deep passion for all things holistic. Originally from Austria, he trained in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) in the Karuna Institute, England, under the direction of acclaimed practitioner Franklyn Sills. He now co-runs a busy breathwork and BCST practice at Naduir Centre for Holistic Health in Furbo, Co. Galway. His partner, yoga teacher Ciara Ni Dhiomasaigh, manages the centre alongside him. The two have successfully created an oasis of deep healing and peace at Naduir. Between Ciara and Josef, they offer the following therapies: Craniosacral Therapy, Massage, Aikido, Yoga, Soma Breath, and a two-year practitioner training qualification in BCST. Other therapies available in Naduir are acupuncture, nutrition, naturopathy, psychotherapy, reflexology, and homeopathy. Breathwork is one of Josef’s abiding passions. He is a certified Wim Hof Method (WHM) instructor, and regularly holds WHM Fundamentals Workshops. This is a powerful system developed by famed international breathwork educator Wim Hof, that makes use of breath, mindset, and controlled exposure to cold, with the aim of optimising body and mind, and creating resilience. “I’ve always been interested in breathwork as a selfdevelopment tool,” Josef shares, “and my work in this area has involved exploring it from a very experiential perspective. How does our mind, our body and our physiological state change when our breath changes? How can we regulate those changes within ourselves? This led me to become curious about other people’s explorations of those same questions, which, in turn, led me to the work of Wim Hof.”

As he delved further into breathwork, Josef knew he had found the holistic modality he had been looking for: a practical, easily implementable method, that would offer people a direct experience of positive change. Each one of us breathes all the time, whether we’re

“We believe in a truly holistic idea of approaching your health from multiple angles.” conscious of it or not. When we take the time to bring awareness to our breathing and consciously control it – even by taking one slow, deep breath – we immediately feel the benefits. “The fundamental structure of the Wim Hof Method I teach is breathing, meditation and mindset,” Josef explains. “This is followed by a two-minute ice bath experience! There is a great sense of community between people who take part in the workshop. Connection to oneself, connection to other people, and connection to nature: those are the most important elements of the experience.” Learn more about Josef’s workshops and services at j-steiner.com. International School of Temple Arts INNER TOOLS FOR DAILY LIFE. by Alison McEvoy Elaine Young is a professional member of ASIS (Association of Somatic and Integrative Sexologists) and a lead faculty member of ISTA (International School of Temple Arts). Elaine was led into this field, away from her twenty year long career in medical science, after the death of her brother. Her grief opened up a doorway into the deepest parts of her being human, and she never looked back; “I realised I had never really grieved anything before....I started to support myself in my grief...it led me into meditation, breath-work and alternative ways of expressing. Something led me to a tantra retreat, where I realised that sexuality is very tied up with expression, with anger, grief, passion and all our emotions...We have split spirituality and sexuality. There are all these narratives that you can be sexual but not spiritual, or spiritual but not sexual. In bringing these together, there is a lot of healing to be done in being a human-being.” A long time ago I came across the phrase “we are intellectual giants, and emotional pygmies”. Its blatant truth struck me to my core. When it comes to emotions, so few of us are shown and learn how to live out our emotional being in healthy, mature and creative ways that can serve our growth. Elaine’s headlong plunge into her emotional world, through the doorway of grief, led her on an enormous spiritual, sexual, emotional and physical journey which has not stopped. Now, she has dedicated herself to guiding others who wish to tread the

52

path to emotional, spiritual and sexuality growth and fulfilment.

“People learn about who they are, their preferences, boundaries, about consent, how to make requests, follow desire...” Elaine and her colleague Laurie Handlers work full-time in the field of spirituality and sexuality and will be facilitating two transformational week-long ISTA trainings in Co. Louth this Spring. On week 1, Laurie will be guiding participants in a personal discovery, an unravelling of “the secret to themselves”. Laurie explained on week 1, that “people learn about who they are, their preferences, boundaries, about consent, how to make requests, follow desire and how to say no...People become more sovereign, more free in themselves, more able to stand for themselves and more able to fulfil their life’s purpose and desires.” Elaine and Laurie combine on week 2, taking participants deeper into the transpersonal realm, the realm of the soul. This involves shadow work, a process of shamanic death and rebirth, and an experiential understanding of

the relationship between one’s soul and human, animal body. I found it utterly fascinating and compelling to hear Elaine talk about there being a relationship between soul and body. That there can be disharmony or even conflict between the two about the way a life is being lived. Week 2 is, in overview, an initiation into the soul’s purpose, a redirection of being towards the life that each individual is meant to live for. The methodology used in these trainings is deep work. These expert tutors are acutely aware of what it is to be human; “We teach through somatic, body experiences. Why? Because most humans are very smart. The mind understands things but the body can have a totally different reaction. You can talk about boundaries all day, for example, but it’s only through having a real life bodily experience that you can actually change things.” These trainings are suitable for everyone who feels interested in them. No previous experience or training is required to attend week 1. If you feel there is something more to life, and you want to feel more alive and empowered, these trainings are a fantastic way to experience and equip yourself with practical tools for making the change that you want happen in your life. ista.life

Inner Gift A GUIDE FOR INNER PEACE. by Alison McEvoy Marie Angeline Lascaux has worked in the holistic field for 25 years, gaining invaluable skills for empowering and healing her clients. She provides one-on-one consultations, facilitates wellness workshops in various organisations, provides one-on-one consultations, and facilitates various groups to help them de-stress, reconnect, re-energise and find inner calm. When lockdown occurred, Marie knew that the time was right for her to forge a new path. ‘I noticed a pronounced shift in lockdown as people’s stress levels rose,’ she comments. ‘Having previously journaled and composed poetry, I decided to use this time to bring a long-held passion to life. I put pen to paper, and Inner Gift: A Guide to Self-Healing was born.’ Inner Gift is Marie’s first published novel: a fourteen-chapter guide for both beginners and those with seasoned experience in the field of intuitive healing. It offers practical tips and tricks, whilst equipping the reader with coping tools to

adapt to life’s many emotions. ‘In today’s day and age, where there is a preference for audiobooks, I wanted to offer readers the chance to experience guided audio meditations,’ she reveals. ‘A scan of a QR code within the book will let the reader access ten guided meditations on Youtube – a useful tool for those who want to unwind and reflect.’ The reviews thus far have been favourable, and speak to Marie’s ability to restore inner peace. Her mantra going forward is simple, as is the theme within Inner Gift: appreciate the present moment and be grateful for the here and now. Kingdom water WATER FIT FOR KINGS & QUEENS.

Ireland is the nation of holy wells.

by Alison McEvoy We spoke to Michelle Keane recently. Michelle is the passionate-about-angels author of ‘Kingdom of Angels’ and the lady behind ‘Kingdom Water’. Our of our many precious of all Motherearth given treasures, water is an essential source of human life and health. Water naturally imbued with health giving minerals can be found right here on our own little island and a very special source has been uncovered by Michelle, down in the Kingdom of Kerry; “Ireland is the nation of holy wells...the saints and sages used to come to rural spots, in the middle of fields, in the middle of nowhere... they used to come and pray and meditate in these spots. Through their supernatural powers they brought this water to light of day for mankind to enjoy.” Michelle has a special relationship with the angels and her new book goes into detail about her many spiritual voyages to sacred sites associated with wells, holy water and Mother

Mary. She experiences her life guided by her connection to the angels and has now found her purpose in spreading their message of kindness and wonder, along with sharing this mineral rich water with the nation of Ireland. She has trialled this water with hundreds of people across Ireland who have come to her for help and she recounts that so many have found relief thanks to it; “The water has a rich mineral content, with almost 45 elements in varying concentrations. Kingdom Water also contains higher-thanaverage levels of lithium. Lithium is believed to have benefits around reducing inflammation, as well as anxiety and depression, and improving cognitive function.” Get online, get in your car, head on down for a winter staycation to the Kingdom of Ireland and check out this very special water. kingdomwater.ie

Revive your health SUSTAINABLE FIRE TONIC. In conversation with Jerome and Jes Fire Tonic is cropping up all over the country, in some of the best loved health shops and pantry stores. It’s packed with nutrients and minerals and it’s the minimally processed, raw ingredients that really pack its punch. Turmeric, garlic, onion, honey, horseradish and ginger are famous for their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting components, such as Allicin and Curcumin. Indeed, makers of Fire Tonic, Jerome and Jes have been sought out by in-store nutritionists or herbalists to enquire about stocking Fire Tonic – presumably after the nutritionists and herbalists studied the ingredient list! Botanic Revival is the name chosen for the company this pair have founded. They wish to revive the simplicity and power of the old ways of doing business, making a product as close to ‘home’ as possible;

“It’s as important to us that the business is built on a solid foundation – without any bank loans or other debts – as it is to have zero waste packaging and locally sourced ingredients. The long term plan at Botanic Revival is to produce most of the ingredients that go into Fire Tonic in-house. We have already grown trials of Turmeric, Garlic, Onion, Horseradish and Ginger. Our latest project is bee keeping. Having completed a course, our first hive is almost ready to go for next spring.” “All of this is hard work, but the feedback we get from our customers makes it very enjoyable. One customer was stockpiling Fire Tonic because he was afraid we would stop making it! I guess a lot of products come and go, but three years on, we are still going strong due to our sustainable business model.” botanicrevival.ie

POSITIVE ADVERTORIAL

immunity assistants A CLOSER LOOK AT MICRONUTRIENTS. by Aisling Cronin

During winter, when a host of seasonal conditions rear their head, boosting immunity becomes a top priority. Certain micronutrients can greatly assist the body in fighting infection – and during a recent conversation I had with Sinead Mitchell of Pharmanord, I learned that selenium and zinc are top of the class in this regard. ‘Your chances of recovering from a respiratory infection, or perhaps just developing minor symptoms, are tremendously increased if you have enough selenium and zinc in your blood,’ Sinead shared with me. ‘In a Belgian study from Ghent University, blood samples were drawn from 138 patients with a severe respiratory condition, who were admitted to two hospitals – UZ Gent and AZ Jan Palfijn – last year. The difference in micronutrient status and survival was striking.’

Micronutrient status significantly affects outcome Professor Gijs Du Laing – a specialist in micronutrition – together with his colleagues, wanted to discern whether levels of specific micronutrients in the blood would affect the outcome of a viral infection. Earlier studies had demonstrated that people with certain nutritional deficiencies were affected more severely than those with sufficient amounts of the different nutrients in their blood.

56

Therefore, the Belgian scientists decided to devise a study of their own to see if their trial came up with a similar result. In the Belgian setup, Du Laing and his colleagues found that of those patients who succumbed to their infection, seven in ten were severely deficient in both selenium and zinc: two micronutrients that play a key role in immune defence. On the other hand, patients who had sufficient levels of these two micronutrients, or were only borderline deficient, had a much better chance of survival and recovered more rapidly.

Nutrition: an important cure factor ‘The surprising thing, according to the researchers, is that low micronutrient status turned out to be a more important risk factor than diabetes, cancer, obesity, or cardiovascular disease,’ Sinead commented. ‘Apparently, micronutrient levels are something that deserve closer scrutiny.’ An earlier German study had already linked high selenium and zinc status to improved recovery from respiratory infection, while Chinese research demonstrated that there were substantially fewer infection-related deaths in regions with higher selenium levels in the soil.

Supplementation makes a difference Selenium is an essential trace element

obtained from dietary sources such as fish, meat, nuts and cereals. It has been found to profoundly reduce the severity of many viral diseases, especially when combined with zinc. A healthy and balanced diet is required to maintain optimum levels of selenium, zinc, and other vital nutrients that are known to control and stimulate the immune system. However, many people are challenged when it comes to getting adequate amounts of these important nutrients. Supplementation can be a useful tool in this case. Studies have shown that micronutrient supplementation can contribute to improved health. ‘In the groundbreaking KiSel-10 study, older seniors in Sweden were given supplements of pharmaceutical-grade selenium yeast and coenzyme Q10,’ Sinead said. ‘The supplemented participants in this trial saw a 54% reduction in cardiovascular mortality, and a significant improvement in quality of life.’ pharmanord.ie Source: Du Laing, G.; Petrovic, M.; Lachat, C.; De Boevre, M.; Klingenberg, G.J.; Sun, Q.; De Saeger, S.; De Clercq, J.; Ide, L.; Vandekerckhove, L.; Schomburg, L. Speed up your blood flow Ginkgo biloba is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to alleviate the symptoms of poor blood flow in conditions such as cold hands and feet. To get the desired effects, it is essential that you choose a product with a documented content of active compounds.

Warm hands and feet again A thermo-graphic camera can be used to test ginkgo biloba's ability to improve circulation in the hands. When the test subject takes ginkgo biloba, their hands become significantly warmer in the minutes right after they have been cooled down in very cold water.

Your bloodstream carries oxygen and nutrients to every single part of your body – from head to toe – to ensure that all your body functions work properly. However, the flow of blood through the smallest capillaries can decrease for various reasons, and that may cause problems like cold fingers and toes.

Cold hands and feet? This problem may be a result of having poor blood circulation, and the solution could be tablets with ginkgo biloba. Every inch of the body depends on a wellfunctioning blood supply that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells. As we humans age, our blood circulation becomes less efficient, leading to problems like cold hands and feet. Supports your blood circulation It stands to reason that ginkgo biloba is so popular among older people. The active compounds in the extract dilate your blood vessels, helping your blood to flow more easily through them.

What is ginkgo biloba? Ginkgo biloba is a plant extract made from the leaves of ginkgo biloba, an ancient temple tree that is also known as maidenhair tree. The extract contains a variety of biologically active compounds. Two specific compounds – ginkgoflavone glycosides and terpene lactones – are particularly well-documented and have been shown to support good blood circulation and good cognitive function. Today, thanks to scientific research that has delved into

the underlying mechanisms of these active ingredients, it is possible to manufacture high-quality extracts that deliver the exact same amount of active compound with each tablet. Ginkgo-Biloba Pharma Nord represents this new generation of pharmaceutical-standard ginkgo biloba products that have become increasingly popular, namely among the elderly.

HEALTH OPTIMIZING TECHNOLOGIES.

In conversation with Lisa Morrissey

Living in the technology age, we have advanced in every aspect of our life and with that, medicine has also advanced. At Health Optimizing, founded by Lisa Morrissey in 2015, technology embodies its highest self; existing in service to health and well-being. Lisa has had global recognition with many celebrity clients, professional athletes and even a Royal Princess. Lisa shares below how this amazing technology works for her clients; “The greatest issue people tend to have in general, is an overload of toxins in the body. We have more toxins in our environment and in food than ever before. The toxins can range from heavy metals to microorganisms, or even our own thoughts can create a toxic environment in the body. Toxins and a low vibration can cause for a sluggish lymphatic system, an over-worked liver and a tired thyroid, amongst many other adverse effects on the body. It can make you feel low in energy or low in mood, creating aches and a heaviness in the body. If you get a health screening using the technologies at the clinic, it is possible to see an exact picture of where somebody needs support, and to do up a custom made treatment plan specifically for that person. The technologies are based on quantum physics. The focus is on supporting the body in its innate wisdom to self heal and self regulate with some support, wherever it is needed. Health Optimizing boasts eight innovative technologies.

58

One technology used is called Introspect. This is a quantum medical NLS analysis for finding cellular strain level, microorganisms, heavy metal toxicity and many other factors on a cellular level. It can scan each organ with a method similar to a molecular spectroscope and compare the results to a huge reference database. There is no need for tissue samples from the patient, as this technology can test everything in a noninvasive way at the level of the brain stem. It also features a reprogramming therapy, giving the brain a blueprint for how the molecular movement and cell information should be. For testing psychosomatic, psychological, emotional and personality issues, the Health Optimizing team uses a unique voice analysis. The Voice Analysis Principle is: everything that exists in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms does so on a vibratory basis. The team also has additional technologies for assessment of specific factors, such as the Heidelberg test. This is a gold standard test for the functions of the stomach and is an essential test for clients with digestive problems or gastric reflux. When it comes to therapy, they have a comprehensive technology for stimulating the self-regulating mechanisms. This is called Scio. Scio can work on both our consciousness and our sub conscious and can harmonize us to the Schumann resonance. If it is discovered that you have microorganisms during the screening, the team can use a pulsed plasma ray technology called Rife Therapy. Health Optimizing has a wealth of experience with knowing which combination of therapies gives the best and fastest results. These therapies demonstrate daily that chronic and incurable diseases can often be resolved with help of the right combination of methodologies – by finding and removing the dysfunctions and then supporting the body in self healing and self regulating.” This is technology at its best, and a hugely exciting area of growth for health and healing. Lisa’s wealth of experience with these technologies means you are in very capable hands. There is so much more on offer than what could be covered here, so it’s definitely worth going online to find out more.

by Alison McEvoy alchemy of self-healing. I remember, about seven years ago, The unique, Integral Sound searching for a course in sound healing. Healing method practised at the Academy I was entirely new to the domain, yet “integrates the science, art and alchemy of felt drawn by a strange pull. The Sound sound healing.” For Tony, the science is Healing Academy became known to particularly exciting at the moment as the me then as it stood out among all the contenders as a ‘place’ truly expert in, and dedicated to, the art of sound. It was great, then, to have a recent talk with Tony Nec, the principal of the Sound Healing Academy. Tony envisions the Academy as a “vibrant community of like-minded people who are all trying to make a positive difference in people’s lives around the world, using sound as the focus.” It is the locus point of a huge, international web of practitioners and teachers who are currently offering a blend of in-person and live, online workshops. The Academy also has a host of online courses at the ready for those interested in bringing Sound healing into their lives, the lives of friends/family or, professionally, into the lives of their clients and students. The potential remit of sound healing is unlimited. Sound reaches us at the core of our being. Positive, healing sound can bring us back into the resonance of ease, wellbeing, relaxation...all of which support the body in its own, constant, inner drive towards health and equilibrium. Our body is always trying to heal itself, whether it be a scab over a wound, or a triggering to rest, digest and restore through the nervous system. Healing sounds support our inner

Academy have been using a medical App to test the effectiveness of their unique method in regulating the Autonomic Nervous System (A.N.S). This is the part of the N.S which controls our organ functioning, primarily. When we are under prolonged stress, the A.N.S can get stuck in either one of its modes; eeither the adrenaline-charged fight or flight mode, in which the organs are deprived of resources, or the collapse of energy, lethargy, chronic illness or depression, which represent an extreme playing out of the rest/digest mode. At the Sound Healing Academy, various techniques are taught to unlock this stickiness. This allows for greater regulation and more free-flowing functioning of the A.N.S. Once this is achieved, the physical, mental and emotional health benefits start to flow back into one’s life. So, whether it’s the science that floats your boat, or the art and alchemy that sparks your imagination, sound healing is a wonderful way to support and maintain wellbeing. The fact that it lends itself so well to online experience and study makes this modality a true tonic for these times. academyofsoundhealing.com

2022

forecast THE PASSING OF THE STORM.

by Rachelle Hicks

As we wrap up December of 2021, we are finally exiting the “perfect storm” that has defined the past few years. Since January 2020, we have experienced a collision of multiple astrological storms which have forever transformed our global community, as well as having completely reshaped everyone’s value system on an individual level. So, you might be asking, what next? What does 2022 have in store for us? (Under everyone’s breath, a whisper of “please don’t say another perfect storm”) While I am happy to tell you that the intensity is certainly going to wane (astrologically speaking), we still have to negotiate who we are and what we are doing, going forward. 2022 is going to bring some loosening of the tangles and knots and confusion that many people have found themselves in over the past few years. I spoke extensively about our transition into The Era Of Air in the Winter 2020 issue of Positive Life Magazine, and I mentioned that in 2021, we cross a threshold from a 200 year period of “earth consciousness” to a new 200 year period of “air consciousness”.

In a nutshell, earth consciousness places the collective values more on security, boundaries and all things matter; while air consciousness places the collective value more on community, the sharing of ideas,

“... elevate your energy and pitch a tent in your heart centre.” technology and information. You don’t have to investigate too much to see how this shift has already manifested from last century to this century. From a more immediate vantage point, the beginning of the year of 2022 is marked with a very auspicious conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune in their home sign of Pisces. Jupiter is a planet that represents optimism, growth, possibilities and expansion. Neptune is a planet of spirituality, unconditional love and dissolving boundaries. The sign they are joining in is Pisces, which is a symbol of unity, peace and service to the collective. The primary time frame for this event is from February until June of

2022, meaning that we might find a lot of the crunch and intensity of the past few years dissolving into something more compassionate, optimistic and understanding. While this is a very positive astrological event to look forward to, there are no astrological events that are inherently “good” or “bad”. So, the positives for this in the world could show themselves as dissolving divisions, an increase of compassion and understanding of others, higher learning and spiritual growth. However, we might need to be cautious of unrealistic expectations, projecting illusions, feeling like a victim and deception. In all things, the first half of 2022 is an excellent time to focus on your personal energetic practices. Use the higher notes of compassion to elevate your energy and pitch a tent in your heart centre.
