Podiatry with New Surgical Options Offered by The Chautauqua Center
Dr. Mohammad Khan DPM, DABPM, CWSP, AACFAS
The Chautauqua Center and Dr. Mohammed Khan, DPM, DABPM, CWSP, AACFAS, are excited to share some truly groundbreaking developments in foot and ankle surgery that are changing the way common conditions like bunions, hammertoes, and others can be treated. It's called minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and it's making a real difference for our patients.
What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Unlike traditional open surgery, MIS involves tiny incisions and specialized instruments. This means less trauma to your foot and ankle, leading to several significant advantages like smaller scars, less pain, faster recovery, much lower risk of complications and infection.
TCC and Dr. Khan can provide surgical options in our offices, depending on the severity. Dr. Khan also performs surgeries at our partnering facility, Brooks TLC.
What Conditions Can Be Treated with MIS?
Many common foot and ankle conditions can now be addressed with MIS, including:
Bunions: That painful bump at the base of your big toe? We can correct it with minimal disruption.
Hammertoes: We can straighten those bent toes and relieve the associated pain.
Neuromas: This nerve problem causing burning and tingling in your toes can be treated effectively.
Bone Spurs: These bony growths causing pain in your heel or elsewhere can be removed with precision.
Tendon Problems: Many tendon issues can be addressed, often without the need for major surgery.
A Real Game-Changer
“I’ve seen firsthand how minimally invasive surgery has transformed the lives of our patients. They experience less pain, recover faster, and return to their daily activities sooner. It’s a real game-changer for those who have been putting off treatment due to fear of traditional surgery,” Dr. Khan said.
Not Just for Athletes
While minimally invasive surgery is excellent for athletes who need to get back to their sport quickly, it’s beneficial for anyone experiencing foot or ankle pain. If you’ve been struggling with a bunion, hammertoe, or any other foot issue, we encourage you to schedule an appointment. Dr. Khan can discuss whether minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
Your Foot Health Matters
At The Chautauqua Center, we’re committed to providing the most advanced and effective treatments available. Minimally invasive surgery is just one example of how we’re working to improve the lives of our patients. Don't let foot pain hold you back any longer. Take the first step towards a healthier, happier you.

Together On Your Journey
Finding the Medicare Insurance Plan That Meets Your Needs Doesn’t Have to be Complicated
Adults are often inundated with confusing Medicare insurance advertisements, especially when approaching age 65. Today, more people are working beyond age 65 and often don’t know if they should stay on their employer’s health plan or move to a Medicare insurance option. Every situation is different, and there is no “one size fits all” solution.
This is where an independent licensed insurance agent can step in. Our agents at Lawley Medicare Solutions don’t work for the Federal Medicare Program and they do not represent one specific Medicare insurance carrier.
In fact, licensed insurance agents often represent a number of different insurance carriers, which may all have a variety of different plan options available depending on the service area. They can break it down into simple terms, so that people can decide for themselves what option they are most comfortable with. A licensed insurance agent’s job is to find a plan that works well for you, while making sure you understand it. Best of all, at Lawley Medicare Solutions, there is no obligation to speak with us.
Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or if you have just turned 65 and are in the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. There are many SEPs, losing employer coverage is one of them. A licensed agent can advise if you qualify for any SEP and are eligible to enroll in a Medicare insurance plan.
Lawley Medicare Solutions has independent, licensed, and certified insurance agents that can help you navigate your Medicare insurance enrollment.

Issues That Can Arise From Poor Dental Hygiene
The importance of maintaining dental hygiene is emphasized from the time most people are small children. Indeed, parents start early by cleaning kids’ teeth the moment the first one pushes its way through a baby’s gums, and that hopefully kick-starts a lifelong devotion to dental care.
Appearance may be the main reason why many people prioritize dental hygiene, and few things set as strong an impression as a set of pearly whites. But health is another notable reason to make dental hygiene a priority. It goes without saying that dental health is adversely affected by poor dental hygiene habits, but the rest of the body also can suffer when individuals don’t take time to care for their teeth.
• Cardiovascular disease: The American Academy for Oral & Systemic Health reports that poor dental hygiene and inflammation of the arteries are directly linked. That’s because bacteria from the mouth enters the bloodstream and causes the arteries to harden, thus increasing a person’s risk for stroke or heart attack. The AAOSH also notes that poor oral health has been linked to high blood pressure and elevated levels of “bad” cholesterol, each of which pose a threat to cardiovascular health.
• Diabetes: The American Diabetes Association notes that periodontal disease causes inflammation in the gums. That’s a notable link, as the ADA points out that inflammation in the body can cause high blood sugar levels, which is a known risk factor for diabetes. Simple oral hygiene practices like daily brushing and flossing can protect against gum disease that can increase the risk for diabetes.
• High-risk pregnancy: Women should know that taking care of their teeth could be a notable way to protect their unborn children. A 2021 study published in the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth found that periodontal disease is strongly associated with premature birth. Authors of the study note that premature birth is associated with a host of negative outcomes, including perinatal mortality, immature lung development, reduced feeding ability, and inferior weight gain.
• Respiratory issues: The mouth is vulnerable to bacteria growth, which is one reason why daily measures like brushing and flossing are so important. The AAOSH notes that once bacteria reaches the lungs, an individual’s risk for infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other respiratory issues increases. Dental hygiene practices like brushing and flossing are simple measures, but they can have a profound effect on individuals’ overall health.
Debunking Certain Myths Surrounding Breast Cancer
Events like National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Susan G. Komen® MORE THAN PINK Walk® have been integral to raising awareness about the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe. Though such campaigns and events have helped many women better understand breast cancer and their own risk for the disease, certain myths surrounding breast cancer persist. Such myths are not harmless and can, in fact, lead to unsafe outcomes that jeopardize women’s health.
Questions about breast cancer should always be directed to a physician. Though physicians may not have all the answers, they remain useful allies in the fight against a disease that the World Cancer Research Fund International reports will be discovered in roughly three million women this year. As women seek more knowledge of breast cancer, it can be just as important to recognize some common myths surrounding the disease.
Myth: MRIs are more effective than mammograms.
The National Breast Cancer Coalition notes that no evidence exists to support the assertion that a magnetic resonance imaging exam is a more effective screening test for breast cancer than a mammogram. The NBCC acknowledges that an MRI can be an effective diagnostic tool when doctors suspect something is wrong. However, the NBCC advises against using MRI to screen for breast cancer since it is more likely to yield a false-positive result than a mammogram. Indeed, the National Breast Cancer Foundation identifies mammography as the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer.
Myth: Breast size and breast cancer risk are connected. This myth typically suggests breast cancer is more common in women with large breasts. The NBCF notes there is no connection between breast size and breast cancer risk. Breast density, not size, may be associated with a greater risk for breast cancer. The Mayo Clinic notes dense breast tissue refers to the ways breast tissue appears on a mammogram. Women with dense breasts, which the National Cancer Institute notes affects roughly half of all women over age 40, are at higher risk for
breast cancer because the dense tissue makes screening for the disease more difficult. But breast size and breast density are not one and the same.
Myth: Most breast cancer patients have a family history of the disease.
The NBCC notes that roughly 15 to 20 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer report a family history of the disease. Assuming only those with a family history are vulnerable to breast cancer gives women with no such background a false sense of security, which may discourage them from taking measures to lower their risk.
Myth: All breast lumps are cancerous.
The NBCF indicates only a small percentage of breast lumps end up being cancerous. Lumps should never be ignored, and should be reported to a physician immediately. But it’s important to avoid jumping to conclusions after finding a breast lump. A clinical breast exam can determine what’s behind the lump, and women who discover a lump should remain calm until such an exam is conducted.
These are just some of the many myths circulating about breast cancer. More information about the disease can be found at nationalbreastcancer.org.

What to Expect at Your Next Eye Exam
Regular eye examinations are important components of a personal health regimen. Visiting an eye doctor can alert a person to potential vision impairments, and certain symptoms that show up in the eyes could be indicative of notable health problems. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says everything from brain tumors to aneurysms to high cholesterol can be detected in the eyes.
For those who do not have any apparent vision problems, most doctors recommend following a chart based on age. The insurance experts at Aetna suggest the following age-based intervals:
• Ages 20 to 39: Every five years
• Ages 40 to 54: Every two to four years
• Ages 55 to 64: Every one to three years
• Ages 65 and up: Every one to two years
Individuals who wear glasses or contact lenses, have a family history of eye disease, or have a chronic condition that puts them at risk for eye disease, like diabetes, should get vision exams more frequently.
Despite the significance of eye exams, many people do not visit an eye doctor until something is amiss with their vision or eyes. Perhaps individuals would be inclined to visit the eye doctor more frequently if they knew what to expect during an exam.
Here’s what people can expect the next time they step into a private eye doctor’s office or a vision center, courtesy of The Cleveland Clinic and Warby Parker.
• Visual acuity: The eye doctor will ask you to read an eye chart while looking through a device called a phoropter. This device has several lenses that can be adjusted to help you see better and find the right corrective lens prescription.
• Visual field: The doctor will check peripheral vision by holding up a finger or an object and moving it gradually to the side of your face. Additional movements may include up and down. Some offices use a computer program to conduct this test.
• Automatic refraction: Visual acuity can be measured with this test, during which an autorefractor shines light into the eye and measures the eye’s response. It’s commonly used with children or adults who may struggle to communicate what they’re seeing.
• Pupil function: The eye doctor will briefly shine a handheld light into each eye and then move the light away to watch how the pupils constrict and dilate.
• Slit lamp exam: This test involves a slit lamp, which is a type of microscope that enables the eye doctor to see the eyes in close detail.
• Tonometry measurement: Glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure is high. Some eye doctors will conduct tests to determine the pressure. One way is with a non-contact tonometry test, which is a puff of air squirted at each eye. With applanation tonometry, the doctor first administers a mild numbing agent to the eye, and then uses a pressure-sensitive instrument to gently tap on the surface of the eye to get a pressure reading. A rebound tonometry test requires a handheld device that makes brief contact to the eye and doesn’t require local anesthesia.
• Pupil dilation: The eye doctor will administer eye drops that dilate the pupils, which enables a better view of the retina, optic nerve, cornea, and surrounding blood vessels during an ophthalmoscopy.
• Special photography: The eye doctor may utilize specialized imaging equipment that will take digital images of the eyes to diagnose various retinal, optic nerve and corneal conditions. These are some of the things people may experience during a comprehensive vision exam.
Did You Know?
Wearing eyeglasses is not strictly reserved for adults. In fact, many children wear eyeglasses, and they may need them for different reasons. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus says children may benefit from glasses while their visual systems are still developing, within the first 12 years of life. Glasses can be important for the normal development of kids’ vision, including providing better vision; straightening crossed or misaligned eyes; protecting one eye that sees better when the other eye has poor vision; and strengthening a weak (lazy) eye. The University of Rochester Medical Center says a child may get his or her first pair of glasses as young as a few months of age, but health care providers who specialize in pediatric eye care say kids usually become nearsighted or farsighted between the ages of six and 12. It’s recommended children have an eye screening before they enter school. In addition, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Optometric Association recommends vision screening for all infants, preschoolers and school-aged children.

The Good, the Bad and the Confusing About Cholesterol
Cholesterol can be a complicated subject that many people might admit they do not fully understand.
Most people have been taught that cholesterol is a bad thing. And for a while it was thought that dietary cholesterol, which is the cholesterol found in food, had a big impact on raising cholesterol in the blood. However, Healthline reports that more recent science indicates this is not the case for most people. Is it any wonder that cholesterol is still a mystery to so many?
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat-like, waxy substance that occurs naturally in the body. Although widely believed to be harmful, cholesterol is actually necessary for the body to function. Healthline says the body needs it to make hormones and vitamin D, and cholesterol contributes to the membrane structure of every cell in the body. What are lipoproteins?
When people talk about heart health and cholesterol, they’re really speaking about lipoproteins and not about cholesterol itself. Lipoproteins are structures that carry cholesterol through the blood. There are two main types of lipoproteins: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL is typically called the “good” cholesterol, because it moves extra cholesterol from the bloodstream to the liver where it is cleaned out, says the Cleveland Clinic. LDL is the “bad” cholesterol because, when amounts of it are excessive,
that contributes to plaque buildup in the arteries. You need some LDL to carry cholesterol to the body’s cells, but having too much can be troublesome. HDL carries some LDL away from the arteries but other steps are needed to lower HDL. Another lipid in the blood includes triglyceride, which is a type of fat. High levels of triglycerides also can put a person at risk for heart issues, including atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the blood vessels.
Dietary cholesterol vs. blood cholesterol
The amount of cholesterol in the blood and the amount in one’s diet are two different things. Typically, eating foods that contain cholesterol does not directly correspond to an elevated blood cholesterol level. Blood cholesterol is mainly determined by the amount of fats and carbohydrates in the diet, as well as genetics. Some people are simply genetically prone to high cholesterol levels. Even for people whose blood cholesterol is affected by dietary cholesterol (hyperresponders), research shows dietary cholesterol only moderately increases LDL, and in these cases it does not seem to increase their risk of heart disease, offers Healthline.
How to maintain good cholesterol health?
According to Piedmont Healthcare, there are ways to control cholesterol and lipoproteins so they are beneficial to the body.
• Choose foods lower in saturated fat and be mindful of foods that can impact blood sugar levels.
• Quit smoking
• Reduce stress levels, which may help you avoid eating highfat foods as a coping mechanism.
• Exercise regularly
• Weight loss can both increase HDL and lower LDL
• Choose low-fat or nonfat dairy products and lean meats
• Incorporate more fiber into your diet, which will help remove excess LDL.
There is much confusion about cholesterol among the general public. But learning the basics of cholesterol can help individuals make more informed decisions about their diet and overall health.
Health Problems Linked to Mold Exposure
Mold is a natural part of the environment and can be found growing just about anywhere that moisture and oxygen are present, advises the Environmental Protection Agency. Mold is a fungus that can be helpful because it breaks down dead organic matter. But mold growth indoors can prove problematic, not only to personal living spaces but to one’s health.
When mold grows outdoors in the fresh air, exposure to it can be minimal. However, mold growing indoors can cause concentrated conditions that adversely affect indoor air quality and overall health. The Rhode Island Department of Health says exposure to a large number of mold spores may cause symptoms associated with allergies, such as runny nose, watery eyes, headache, fatigue, and sneezing, among others. Exposure to certain molds, such as Stachybotrys and Aspergillus, can cause more serious illness because of the mycotoxins these molds produce. Aspergillosis is a fungal lung infection with emerging antimicrobial resistance, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The World Health Organization, the National Academy of Medicine and the National Toxicology Program report that occupants of damp, moldy buildings have an increased risk of respiratory problems. Repeated exposure to mold can lead to asthma, which is a chronic airway disease characterized by inflammation, states the National Institutes of Health. Individuals can experience shortness of breath and airway obstruction from the overproduction of mucus.
Additional conditions also can be attributed to mold. For example, valley fever is linked to the fungus Coccidioides, which lives in soil in some areas of the southwestern United States. Mucormycosis is a severe but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds known as mucormycetes, says the CDC. It affects the sinuses or the lungs of people with weakened immune systems.
Though some people who come in contact with mold will not develop any adverse symptoms, it is still best to address indoor mold problems promptly. These steps can help.
• Use dehumidifiers in damp areas, such as basements.
• Ventilate bathrooms, kitchens and laundry areas.
• Fix any leaks in pipes, walls or windows promptly.
• Use mold-resistant paint.
• Make sure that clothes dryers and exhaust fans vent to the outdoors rather than an attic or another room.
• Remove mold with mold-killing products. The CDC says mold can be cleaned from hard surfaces with soap and water or a bleach solution of no more than one cup of household bleach to one gallon of water.
Mold is everywhere in the environment, but prevention of indoor mold growth can help people avoid respiratory issues and other health problems.

Risk Factors for AFib
Ahealthy heart is vital to a long life. Aging individuals recognize that link, and many take steps to protect their heart health, which may include changing their diets or exercising with greater frequency.
Recognizing certain threats to heart health is another important step individuals of all ages can take as they seek to live long, healthy lives. One such threat is atrial fibrillation, which is often referred to as “AFib.” Johns Hopkins medicine notes AFib is a type of abnormal heartbeat caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart. Johns Hopkins notes a person with AFib may have a heart that beats more than 400 times per minute, which is caused by faulty electrical signals that make the atria (the two upper chambers of the heart) contract much faster than normal.
The American Heart Association reports that AFib increases the risk of heart-related death and stroke. But individuals may be curious about their risk for AFib. Though some of the risks for AFib, such as family history, may be beyond an individual’s control, others can be managed with the goal of reducing the likelihood of developing the condition. The AHA notes that people who have one or more of the following conditions are typically at higher risk for AFib.
• Age: Age is a significant risk factor for AFib. Johns Hopkins notes that adults older than 50 are at elevated risk for AFib. In addition, the AHA reports that medical researchers suspect the number of AFib cases will rise considerably in the coming years as people are living longer. Recognition of age as a significant risk factor for AFib might compel more individuals to take additional risk factors for the condition more seriously.
• High blood pressure: The AHA reports that longstanding, uncontrolled high blood pressure can increase a person’s risk for AFib. This link between AFib and high blood pressure underscores the need for annual health examinations, which often uncover the condition known as “the silent killer” due to the fact that it does not necessarily produce noticeable symptoms.
• Existing heart conditions: Heart valve problems; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is marked by a thickening of the walls of the heart chamber; acute coronary syndrome, an umbrella term used to refer to conditions in which blood supplies to the heart are suddenly blocked; and a history of heart attack are just some of the heart conditions that increase a person’s risk for AFib. Anyone with a personal or family history of these and other heart conditions is urged to discuss AFib with their physicians.
• Alcohol consumption: Binge drinking increases risk for AFib, according to the AHA. The organization defines binge drinking as five drinks in two hours for men and four drinks in two hours for women. If individuals want to consume alcohol, Johns Hopkins emphasizes the need for moderate consumption, which is defined as one drink or less per day for women or two drinks or fewer per day for men.
• Activity levels: Though physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, the AHA notes that AFib is common in athletes. The condition can be triggered by a rapid heart rate known as a supraventricular tachycardia, which can be a byproduct of exercise.
AFib can pose a serious threat to individuals from all walks of life. Recognition of that threat and how to reduce AFib risk can be part of anyone’s long-term health regimen.
Did You Know?
Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as “AFib,” is more common among men than women. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes AFib is caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart. Males are more likely than women to develop AFib, though that does not mean the condition is not a threat to women. In fact, age is a significant risk factor for AFib, and a report from Henry Ford Health noted that women tend to live longer than men, which could explain why there were more women living with AFib in 2020 than there were men. The condition also manifests differently in men than women. HFH notes that high blood pressure and heart valve disease are more likely to lead to AFib in women, while coronary artery disease and a history of heart attack are most common risk factors for AFib in men.
Brooks-TLC Hospital System and Affiliate Lake Erie Medical Services is On the Grow!
In its ongoing effort to Keep Care Close to home, BrooksTLC Hospital System, Inc. (BTL) and its affiliate, Lake Erie Medical Services (LEMS), have grown the number of healthcare providers serving their patients and surrounding community by leaps and bounds – including the addition of two highly sought-after service lines, now accepting new patients at local offices.
Since November 2023 BTLC/LEMS has successfully recruited and hired an oncology/hematology specialty provider, clinic and chemotherapy infusion center, two orthopedic surgeons, a primary care provider, and added a second clinic location for its general surgeon. In the next month, a second general surgeon will join the roster.
“We are all familiar with the adage, ‘slow and steady wins the race’,” said Ken Morris, president and CEO of Brooks/TLC Hospital System. “But in healthcare, particularly in the rural community we serve, when you get the opportunity to bring in expert providers that add new services or complement the skill levels of those we already have here, you have to move quick-
ly and invest in high quality providers that are committed to keeping care close to home.”
Dr. Sood
Oncology and Hematology
Brooks-TLC and LEMS are proud to have welcomed Raman Sood, MD, a locally well-known cancer care expert and hematologist in the fall of 2022. In collaboration with Brooks-TLC Hospital System, Dr. Sood now treats non-chemotherapy patients in the Brooks infusion center, providing care for those with osteoporosis and anemia and those needing immunotherapy and blood transfusions. He also moved his clinic practice and infusion center for chemotherapy to the first floor of Brooks Hospital making requisite diagnostic testing, office visits and infusion more easily accessible under one roof and simplifies the continuity of care.
Sood and his staff have been providing the same great care for patients for over 25 years. Through Brooks-TLC and LEMS, his extensive medical oncology experience and his clinic staff are available to care for all his patients – under one roof – close to home.
Over his career, Dr. Sood has received a number of prestigious academic awards, including the Pfizer Medallion of Excellence in Internal Medicine, and other Professional honors in internal medicine, OB and GYN and preventative medicine.
Dr. Sood received his Medical Undergraduate Training from Indira Ghandi Medical College in Shimla, India, and his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Internal Medicine from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in India. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency Training at SUNY Stonybrook Clinical Campus at Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, NY and was a Fellow in Medical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in NY.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Medical Oncology.
Orthopedics
The new year brought two orthopedic surgeons to the area –providers with different specialties which complement each other – and the duo offers a vast array of general orthopedic treatment with specialties in the areas of spine and hand.
Dr. Sunil Kukreja is an orthopedic-trained surgeon with over 20 years of clinical experience in orthopedics, and advanced

subspecialty training in simple and complex spine surgery. After completing medical school and his orthopedic surgery residency in India, Kukreja was awarded fellowships in the United States which further developed his expertise. He specializes in complex and minimally invasive spine, pediatric orthopedics and spine and sports medicine.
The majority of his extensive, clinical training focused on the spine, Kukreja’s primary area of interest.
Two of those experience took place in the northeast region of the U.S., one in the University at Buffalo Spine Fellowship Program, the other, in Harvard University’s Pediatric Orthopedic and Spine Fellowship Program.
Kukreja comes to our community from Glen Rock, New Jersey, where he was an orthopedic and spine surgeon at CitiMed NY.
Dr. Ryan Shephard is an orthopedic-trained surgeon with over 13 years of clinical experience in orthopedics. He possesses sub-specialty, advanced training in hand surgery. His specialty area includes a same-day, minimally invasive, anterior hip replacement which supports a faster recovery time for patients.
Shephard received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. While at Michigan State, he was able to take advantage of the International Medical/Surgical Student Experience in Blantyre Malawi, Africa, where he received additional training in orthopedic and general surgery.
Barrett began her career as a registered nurse at the Erie County Medical Center on the Step-down Trauma Unit. She has worked throughout Western New York and area residents are sure to recognize her from her clinical rotation at Sharma Family Medicine, TLC Health Network, Chautauqua Medical Services/GLPP and Medicor Associates (Silver Creek).
With over 20 years of healthcare experience, she provides compassionate, non-judgmental care in a friendly clinic setting for preventive medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of chronic and acute illnesses and diseases. In patient education, her focus is on healthy lifestyle, diet & exercise and weight loss & management.
When not seeing patients, Barrett’s favorite activity is spending time with her husband of 24 years, their three children, and her “fourth baby” — an adored German Shephard named Klaus. A close second to family is spending time with friends.
She is accepting patients – and now same-day appointments as well – at 268 W. Main St., Fredonia.
General Surgery
Abdul R. Shahzad, MD, FACS, FCCWS, CWS, joined LEMS as general surgeon in the spring of 2021.
Dr. Shahzad earned his medical degree in the Dominican Republic, with honors, and, as the youngest student to graduate in 1983. He completed a residency in general surgery at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, Bronx, NY.
Shephard created the first outpatient, total joint program for a network of over 14 hospitals while working in southeast Kentucky. he comes to our community from Caterra Health System in Louisville, Kentucky.
Both Kukreja and Shephard welcome patients at the LEMS office locations: 419 Central Ave. Dunkirk, 268 W. Main St., Fredonia and 107 Institute St., in Jamestown. They have surgical privileges for orthopedic and spine surgeries, at Brooks Hospital, 529 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Each surgeon is performing procedures not usually available at rural hospitals, thus saving patients long drives to bigger city hospitals.
Primary Care
An alumna of Lakeshore Central School, Lisa Barrett, ANPBC, was a junior in high school when she enrolled in the BOCES nursing program. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at D’Youville College, in Buffalo, and a Master’s of Science in Adult Nurse Practitioner from Daemen College, in Amherst.
As a practicing surgeon for over 40 years, with a clinical focus in general and laparoscopic surgery and trauma wound care, Shahzad brings years of specialization in laparoscopic appendectomy and gallbladder surgeries, and cancer surgeries. Prior experience includes practical and teaching experience at a level one trauma center.
Shahzad served as director of surgery at Ellenville Regional Hospital, NY, a rural healthcare network. Prior to that, in his role as chief of surgery at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Dr. Shahzad’s department was recognized by Healthgrades for three consecutive years with a five-star rating in appendix and gallbladder surgery outcomes in New York state.
Dr. Shahzad sees patients in the Dunkirk office located at 419 Central Avenue and bi-monthly on Mondays at 107 Institute St. in Jamestown.
