YWCA Westfield Arts Crafts Festival

YWCA Westfield Hosts 52nd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Moore Park - Over 150 vendors and 5,000 attendees expected to attend

YWCA Westfield announces its annual Arts & Crafts Festival will take place the weekend of July 26th and 27th. The free two-day event is held at Moore Park, where visitors will be able to browse dozens of booths offering handmade items including original art, home and lawn decor, clothing, accessories and toys.

“Every year, the Arts & Crafts Festival gets bigger and bigger and even better. Our Board of Directors really put in the hard work that goes into making it happen.” said YWCA Westfield Executive Director Stephanie Stevens. “This event is such a celebration of creativity and community and we really look forward to it.”

Over 150 vendors will offer a variety of craftwork and approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend over the course of the weekend. In addition to the shopping opportunities there will be a wide variety of food vendors.

“The Arts & Crafts Festival brings together the community as well as welcomes visitors to the area each year,” said YWCA Westfield Board President and event Chairperson Kathryn Bronstein. “Local art and craftwork is featured and it gives us a chance to show off what this region has to offer! Visitors can

even stay in the YWCA Westfield Air BNB’s.”

Since its launch in 1971, proceeds of more than $160,000 have been invested to support community projects such as holiday decorations, a freezer for the soup kitchen, park benches, new trash cans and lights for safety and beautification.

In 1992, YWCA Westfield took on the planning and hosting of the event which is now known as the YWCA Westfield Arts & Crafts Festival.

At that time Linda Dunn who was one of the event’s original organizers said that the event was ready for new leadership and that after 20 successful years, she believed it would continue for 20 more. Last year marked 31 more years, and the YWCA Arts & Crafts Festival is still going strong.

Mark your calendars now so you can plan to make the most of this event. For those attending, parking is available throughout the Village as well as at the Westfield Academy and Central School bus garage with continuous shuttles to the park and back. Proceeds from booth rentals are now used by the YWCA Westfield to support its mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.

Information about the event including how vendors can participate can be found at ywcawestfield.org

Wild Wind Folk Art Craft Festival

4th Annual Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival - Celebrating Artistic Excellence and Family Fun! This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 7th & Sunday, September, 8th at the Warren County Fairgrounds, 371 Barton Run Road, Pittsfield, PA. Held rain or shine, hours are 10 am to 5 pm, each day.

Every year the weekend after Labor Day, the Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival opens its gates to a crowd of art enthusiasts, crafters, family, and friends. There is always excitement in the air - the sounds of kettle corn popping and artists greeting new and longtime customers, the sights of vibrant-colored mums and crisp fall apples, and the smells of homemade pie and apple strudel. Children tug on their parents’ hands, steering them to the petting zoo, families marvel at the magician’s humor and tricks, and friends enjoy good conversation and a tasty meal while their feet tap to live music. In amongst all this festivity, true artistic talent and creativity abound. The celebration of handcrafted artistry is the foundation of this event, and keeping tradition with its award-winning reputation, the festival brings together an array of artistic talents to present a show that is unsurpassed.

In addition to spotlighting the tradition of handcrafted art, Wild Wind is proud to honor the value of time spent with family and friends. Children can delight in the ever-popular traveling petting zoo, face painting, balloon artistry, and more. Another favorite is the Tamarack Wildlife Center, with its birds of prey exhibit and lectures. Of special note, Alexander the Magician is back to delight the crowd with a

new twist on his unique blend of humor and enchantment. The festival also welcomes chainsaw carvers, Brian Fox, from Fox Sawmill & Custom Design, and Lisa Barr, from Barrnone Carvings & Creations. Their talents in crafting birds, bears, turtles, and more will be on full display, and visitors are encouraged to watch the action! With equal excitement, other demonstrations, from wool spinning to glass blowing, take place throughout the festival offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the day.

New this year, Mandy Moon of Vivacous Flow Arts will share her hula-hooping talents through demonstration and instruction. Adults and chil dren should come prepared to participate in the fun!

Hoops will also be available for purchase so newly learned skills can be further developed and shared. When it comes time to take a break from the show’s sights, a shaded picnic area is a wonderful retreat, while a creative assortment of delectable foods await hearty appetites. French artichokes, BBQ pork, gyros, crab cakes, sausage subs, hand-cut french fries, homemade pie, ice cream, root beer, and more!

Live music is on deck to add to the ambiance, with Old Dawg Bluegrass on Saturday and Warren’s own, Temple Grey, adding to the toe-tapping on Sunday.

The Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival welcomes you to make a treasured memory by joining them for the weekend to embrace the wonder of award-winning craftsmanship and family fun. The admission fees are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under. As a bonus, those who attend on Saturday can return on Sunday free of charge. In the grape belt along Lake Erie, as the summer season slowly transitions into the golden hues of autumn, a sense of anticipation is growing as the harvest season approaches. Grape growers, winemakers, and the communities they live in, are all preparing for the annual harvesting of the fruit of the vines that has sustained this region for so many years.

Westfield Wine and Grape Festival Expands Celebration

The festival’s atmosphere is electric. Live music fills the air, with seven musical acts performing over the course of two days, including The Probable’s – Unplugged on Saturday night. Local farmers and artisans proudly display their wares. It is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and for festival goers to bring home unique souvenirs.

As residents prepare for the harvest, they also celebrate its arrival. The Village of Westfield, original home to Welch’s, Growers Coop, Mogan David and others, is centrally located in the Lake Erie Grape Belt. As the grape season approaches, community members are eagerly preparing for the second annual Westfield Grape and Wine Festival. Set against the picturesque backdrop of vineyards and rolling hills, this highly anticipated event brings together locals and visitors alike for a celebration of all things grape and wine.

The Westfield Grape and Wine Festival pays homage to the region’s rich viticulture heritage and the hardworking grape growers and talented winemakers who have nurtured these fertile lands. It serves as a testament to the community’s deep-rooted connection with the land and the pride it takes in producing exceptional concentrates, juices and wines. One of the festival’s greatest appeals lies in its ability to cater to a diverse audience. Families with young children can revel in the array of kid friendly activities and educational exhibits that teach them about the fascinating process of grape growing and harvesting with trolley rides to the Grape Discovery Center. Meanwhile, wine enthusiasts can embark on a tasting journey of the various local vineyard offerings, discovering new favorites with each pour.

Central to the festival’s success is the strong sense of community that permeates throughout. The Westfield Grape and Wine Festival acts as a unifying force, fostering a sense of camaraderie and togetherness. Locals and visitors alike come together in a Hallmark moment as they cheer on their favorites at the grape pie eating contest, grape stomping event or grape pie contest. It is truly a moment of collective pride as the community comes together to celebrate the harvest.

Beyond the enjoyment of food and wine, the Westfield Grape and Wine Festival plays a significant role in boosting tourism and economic growth for the region. As visitors flock to the festival, they explore the Village’s charming streets, stay in local accommodations, and support the businesses that make Westfield the vibrant destination it is. The festival acts as a catalyst for the local economy, injecting viability and opportunity into the community

As we eagerly anticipate the Westfield Grape and Wine Festival, let us embrace the vibrance and unity it represents. Let us raise our glasses and toast to the passionate grape growers, the talented winemakers, and the dedicated organizers who have worked tirelessly to make this celebration a reality.

Additional information regarding the festival’s schedule of events can be found at www.westfieldny.com/livinghere/westfield-grape-and-wine-festival. Wine tasting tickets are available at the event. All other festival events are free.

Western New York Family Magazine called the National Comedy Center a “Must See Desti- nation… recommended for school-age children and up,” and I LOVE NY named the Comedy Center one of the best “family-friend indoor activities” in New York State. Macaroni KID Erie raved about the Comedy Center’s “kid-friendly laughs,” stating, ”We spent nearly four hours at the museum and still had to drag our 7- and 9-year-olds away!”

In both 2022 and 2023, The Post-Journal and Observer readers voted the National Comedy Center as “Best of the Best” in Chautauqua County for “Family Fun.”

Last fall, Group Tour Magazine named the Comedy Center a “Top Cultural Institution” in the Northeast, stating, “through state-ofthe-art technology, students can create a “sense-of-humor profile” which is then used to personalize their interactions across the rest of the museum. Students will learn not only about comedy history but also how to communicate by varying tone, genre, and style.”

Here we’ve highlighted some of the most popular, “must see” interactive experiences for kids and teens.

Let’s Keep our View Blue: Understanding our Lakeshore Connection

When we think of the color blue, what comes to mind? A cloudless sky? Our wondrous open spaces? Crystal-clear water?

The color blue has not been the color we have seen in our lakes in recent years. Excessive algae and plant growth have turned many of our lakes from blue to green, and dealing with this issue has become a consistent yearly struggle. And what is causing this green water? One of the main issues is excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) flowing from our land and our properties into our waterways and into our lakes.

When we hear of ways to control this “green,” it is typically in the form of cutting or spraying, methods that unfortunately are not controlling the causes of the color change. These control methods are only “band-aids” – temporary fixes for something that is broken – so the causes of the excessive algae and green plant growth are not being addressed.

We can make a real difference in controlling our water color and the outbreak of harmful algal blooms and excessive plant growth right in our own yards and communities where we live. All of our yards drain and contribute to the health

of our watershed – no matter how big they are or where they are located. Here are a few simple ways homeowners can help decrease the amount of nutrients flowing from or through their yards into our lakes and help us keep our view blue:

1. Plant native buffers. Native plants along a lakefront or streamside have strong root systems that not only soak up excess nutrients but also help hold soil in place on the water’s edge to prevent erosion. And if you can take or leave gardening, stop mowing down to the water’s edge and just let nature do her thing. If you don’t live on a waterway, plant natives to better filter and soak up water and extra nutrients that are draining from your property. (They will also help feed our local birds and pollinators!)

2. Scoop the poop. Pet waste contains a host of diseases and/or parasites, as well as being high in nitrogen and phosphorus. By scooping it and disposing of it in the trash, you can prevent diseases and extra nutrients from making their way into your homes and our waters.

3. Fertilize in the fall (if at all). If you choose to fertilize, waiting until the fall to apply it is ideal because it is better for your lawn. Feeding your lawn in the fall with zero percent phosphorus fertil-

izer promotes strong grass root growth heading into winter, and you are less likely to contribute to lake algae and plant growth with the lower fall temperatures.

4. Maintain your septic system. Septic tanks need to be properly maintained, cleaned, and emptied every 3 to 5 years. If not, our poop is draining straight into our nearby waterways.

To better understand our connection to our watershed and how we can help protect our lakes and other waterways, the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy has created and is excited to share a new video called “Our Lakeshore Connection.” Watch it by visiting the Conservancy’s website or YouTube channel or by scanning the QR code found within our ad in this publication.

We have the knowledge, power, and responsibility to keep our water blue! Let’s work together to throw away the green “band-aids,” make some simple yard changes, and actually make a difference in the health of our lakes and waterways.

Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization with the mission to preserve and enhance the quality, scenic beauty, and ecological health of the Chautauqua region’s lands and waters for our community. For more information, visit chautauquawatershed.org.

3 Self-Care HacksAyurveda

Ayurveda is a healing tradition that grew up alongside yoga in ancient India. It was forced underground when India was a British colony, but thrives today with 6,000 ayurvedic hospitals on the subcontinent. Beyond its role in healing disease, ayurveda has a huge self-care component.

Translated from Sanskrit as “science of long life,” ayurveda contends that the fundamental cause of impaired health is forgetting who we are, an immortal spirit inhabiting a physical body. There is certainly science to ayurveda––it is recognized by the World Health Organization as a viable medical system––but the sages who developed it were spiritual teachers, too.

Ayurveda is adamant about individuality. Two people might have the same pathology, but why each one has it, how it expresses, and what they need to do to bring their bodies into balance may be different. These differences are explained in the theory of doshas, three energies present in all of us, but in differing degrees. The doshas are:

• Vata ~ comprised of air and ether. Vata people tend to be slight of build, creative and spontaneous when in balance, spaced out and anxious when they’re not. Vata overload can exhibit as dryness throughout the body, gas, constipation, creaking joints, sensitivity to noise, and always feeling cold.

• Pitta ~ the fire and water dosha. Pittas are of medium build and often muscular. In balance, they can thrive as executives, stretegists, or litigators, taking charge and getting things done. Out of balance, they revert to anger and sarcasm, and are prone to inflammation, skin eruptions, ulcers, acid indigestion, and diarrhea.

• Kapha ~ composed of earth and water. People endowed with kapha tend to be big-boned and fleshy. The slowest moving dosha, kapha generally imparts excellent health, with the exception of upper respiratory troubles and a tendency to retain water and gain weight. In balance, kapha people are stable, patient, and kind. Out of balance, they may be overly attached to possessions or to the past, and they could become depressed.

Ayurveda also contends that you’re perfect already. Your prakruti, dosha makeup, is determined at conception. If yours is 72% pitta, 21% kapha, and 7% vata -- or the opposite -- it’s as “just right” as Baby Bear’s porridge. The danger is straying too far from our innate nature, e.g., when our dominant dosha gets too full of itself and wants to dominate even more. For the high-pitta person, summer heat, too much caffeine or alcohol, and fried, salty, or super-spicy food can lead to imbalance. You can find your own dosha by taking a dosha quiz. I like the ones at www.chopra.com and at www.banyanbotanicals.com. Here are three additional tips from ayurveda to help your body, mind, and spirit:

1. Vata can get in anybody’s business, especially as we get older. Vata is the most active and unstable dosha, so it’s good to keep that one pacified, regardless of your personal dosha score. Luckily, keeping vata happy is largely what we ought to be doing for general health anyway:

• Stick with a reasonable routine -- early to bed, early to

rise; boring maybe, but it makes vata purr

• Avoid unecessary arguments (even online) and violent games or movies

• Stay hydrated: throughout the day, sip hot, warm, or room temperature water or herbal teas -- ginger, licorice, or CCF (equal parts cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds, steeped)

• Favor warm, moist, nourishing foods, such as soups and stews, especially in cool weather, along with ripe peaches and mangos, sweet potatoes, basmati rice, baby lentils, tofu, and split mung beans

2. Energy is finite: save it like money. Both vata and pitta types have a hard time knowing when to stop. A project, goal, or cause can take precedence over the fact that physical and mental resources run out if not replenished with breaks during the day and sleep at night, time with people (and animals) we love, self-care, recreation, contact with nature, and spiritual practice. Meditation is the ultimate recharger since it connects you with universal energy that’s inexhaustible.

3. “You don’t have to do all this stuff every day.” This should make your life easier, not more complicated. For example, f you read in any depth about ayurveda, you’ll see dozens of early morning recommendations, including:

• Clean the coating (ama, metabolic debris) off your tongue with a copper, silver, or stainless steel tongue scraper (find one online or in the toothbrush aisle at the drugstore)

• Splash your face with cold water

• Drink 16 ounces of warm or hot water with lemon or lime before eating anything (great for regularity)

• Think a positive thought

• Look at something beautiful -- or treat each of your five senses to a tiny beautiful experience

• Make a gratitude list

• Give yourself a warm oil massage (abhyangha), ideally letting the oil absorb for 20 minutes before your shower

• Watch the sun come up

• Walk for 30 minutes

• Do a session of yoga asanas, or simply sun salutations -three, six, or twelve of them

• Meditate

On a blissfully empty day off, you might even try all this. Otherwise, pick and choose. On ordinary, i.e., busy, mornings, I do tongue cleaning, walk (I have a dog), and meditate without fail. I get the self-massage once or twice a week in warm weather, two or three times when it’s cold; and I do some yoga, even if only 15 minutes.Ayurveda is about balance and ease. Sometimes, less really is more.

Chautauqua County’s Rich Trail System Offers Outdoor Alternatives to Lake Recreation

Did you know there are more than 250 miles of recreational trails in Chautauqua County? Over the past few years, those trails have undergone some major improvements to help residents and visitors alike make the most out of their time enjoying the great outdoors. From mountain bike and equestrian trails, to hiking and kayaking routes, there’s no shortage of recreational opportunities – regardless of what area of the county you’re in. And with the arrival of a new countywide interactive trails map in June, users now have another tool to help them plan and then enjoy their time on the trail.

All this adds to and heightens quality of life opportunities within Chautauqua County, helping to make it a great place to live and enjoy its natural beauty, no matter the season.

Much of the recent improvements to the trail system is due to the work of the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG), along with the Friends of Chautauqua County Greenways (FCCG) – which is a collaborative initiative between several public and private entities within the county, including Chautauqua County Government, the City of Jamestown, the Boutwell Hill Ski Club, Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System, Chautauqua Rails to Trails, Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy, and WNY Mountain Bicycling Association. Together, these groups have been working tirelessly the past several years to enhance, maintain, and promote the incredible recreation opportunities within the county.

This is a pivotal moment in the history of Chautauqua County,” explains Jacob Bodway, CCPEG Trail Coordinator. “The county is recognizing that by improving its recreation opportunities,

there is a corresponding improvement to the quality of life for both residents and tourists. As an avid trail user myself, I am thrilled that I can basically walk out of my backdoor and hike, mountain bike, and paddle some of the most beautiful natural areas that you’ll find anywhere. There is nowhere else that I’d rather live than right here in Chautauqua County!”

While countless hours have already been spent improving the various trails, even more work is expected in the coming months and years. By late fall of 2024, trail-users will be able to experience some of the major trail improvements. For example, in collaboration with the Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System (CCETS), the Boutwell Hill Ski Club was recently awarded a $239,000 Park and Trail Partnership Grant to resurface the “Homestead Loop’’ in Boutwell Hill State Forest. That grant was administered by Parks & Trails New York.

In addition, CCPEG was awarded $105,000 in grants for Phase IV of the “Chautauqua County Overland Trails Revitalization Project.” The focus for 2024 is to improve the Fred J. Cusimano Westside Overland Trail in Panama and Brokenstraw State Forests, along with some sections of private property south of Titus Road. There will also be improvements to the equestrian trails in North Harmony State Forest, and the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails will have sections of trail resurfaced. Lastly, the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is currently removing blowdowns and blockages along the Marden E. Cobb Waterway Trails. The grant funding came from multiple sources, including the Greater Buffalo Community Foundation, the Lenna Foundation, the Sheldon Foundation, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and the Jesse Smith Darrah Fund. continued on page 29

For those who are wondering about the location, difficulty, tread surface, and parking for the county trails, CCPEG and the FCCG recently released a new, interactive countywide trail map at CHQTrails.org, along with mobile maps provided on the Avenza application. According to Bodway, the need for an interactive trail map covering all of Chautauqua County is the result of an increased interest in the various trails found across the area, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we witnessed more trail users exploring our trails, many for the first time, we also heard a renewed interest in a trail map that would provide information for trail users of varied experience and ability,” Bodway said. “I think that the new countywide trail map does that and more.”

The interactive map allows trail users to plan their own adventure on their computer by selecting trails that coincide with their interests - like biking, hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and kayaking. Users will also be able to select trails based on land-owner, like those found in state forested land, or those associated with a specific organization or community. It also features images of trail heads and provides information on trail surfaces, trail length, and parking.

The mobile maps will be featured on Avenza, the top-rated app used for hiking and biking trail use, even in the most remote areas of the world. Several trail maps have been added to Avenza – including Boutwell Hill, Harris Hill, and North Harmony State Forests; Long Point State Park; Audubon Community Nature Center; and Cassadaga Lakes – along with others. These county maps will also be available on other third-party apps, such as Trailforks, All Trails, and MTB Project. PDF versions of individual trail maps can also be viewed, downloaded and also printed from the website for trail users who may not have the ability to use the mobile app.

Plans are also underway to provide a limited number of print

copies of individual trail maps, and to also to remind trail users about the existence of the interactive map and mobile app with signage along the trails, in addition to other marketing efforts across the region. Meanwhile, the interactive map and additional details on where to find and install the mobile map application from Avenza can be found online at CHQTrails.org.

Funding for the trail maps project comes from generous support provided by The Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation.

The recent projects involving the various trails in the county are only made possible through the combined efforts of CCPEG and the organizations that comprise the FCCG, whose aim is to collaborate and build on existing private/public partnerships to realize the primary objectives outlined in Chautauqua County’s 2012 Greenway Plan and updated in the 2022 Chautauqua County Greenways Group Action Plan. These plans have not only assisted with the completed projects outlined above, but will also be used to determine future improvement efforts in the months and years to come.

“We have such incredible outdoor recreation assets, including more than 600 miles of recreational trails which we are actively working to improve,” said Mark Geise, Deputy County Executive for Economic Development. “The various trail improvements we’ve seen in recent years, along with the new interactive trails map and mobile maps, not only help our county market itself as a tourism destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but also help our own residents discover and enjoy outdoor recreation opportunities regardless of the season.”

To learn more about all 250+ miles of recreational trails in the county, visit the FCCG page at ChooseCHQ.com.

Mazza Wines

The Mazza family has been making craft beverages on the shores of Lake Erie for more than fifty years, and they now serve their spirits at three locations: Mazza Vineyards, South Shore Wine Company and Mazza Chautauqua Cellars/Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing. Each facility boasts its own distinct atmosphere and tasting experience. Using a blend of Old World traditions with New World winemaking techniques, the end result is a varied and unique wine list, including varietals and blends using traditional vinifera, hybrid, and native varieties, as well as fruit, sparkling, fortified and dessert wines.

Arrowhead Wine Cellars has been producing internationally recognized award-winning wines for three generations. Their selection features thirty two varieties of reds, whites, sparkling and ice wines, hard cider and fruit juice. Arrowhead uses the highest quality European, Native and hybrid grapes, most of which are grown on their own 250-acre farm. The winery got its name from the Native American Tribes who crafted arrowheads and thrived on the fertile soils of the Lake Erie Shoreline. Over the years, there have been frequent discoveries of arrowheads on local grape farms including Mobilia’s Fruit Farm, the home of Arrowhead Wine Cellars.

Arundel Cellars and Brewing

Arundel Cellars is the area’s first winery and brewery and is located in a beautifully restored 19th century barn which previously served as a cider mill. With over 100 years of combined experience in the wine and viticulture industry, the Arundel family (made up of four family units) prides themselves on offering quality products within a warm inviting atmosphere where everyone is welcome. Arundel has a large selection of premium wines, craft beers, hard ciders and delicious food. Stop by every Sunday for live musical entertainment which is offered inside during the colder months and outside on their large outdoor patio area in the summertime.

Tour Tips from a National Comedy Center Insider

With so much to see, do and experience, a visit to the National Comedy Center is a true, state-of-the-art adventure where laughter and delight are around every corner, immersing visitors in a world of pure joy. There’s a reason why the words “blown away” appear so often in our five-star reviews. There is nothing like the National Comedy Center.

Key to the National Comedy Center experience is the fact that it’s tailored to the individual thanks to our LaughBand technology. That means there is no right way or wrong way to experience it — only your way!

Knowing even the most intrepid explorers love a little insider info, here are a few things to know before you go.

The Not-To-Be-Missed List!

Become a Comedy Chameleon

Have you ever thought, even just for a moment, about being in the movies? We give you that chance with our Act The Part green screen experience. Put yourself and your friends and family in classic TV shows and movies and act alongside your favorite stars.

Choose from some of the most famously funny moments including the iconic I Love Lucy chocolate factory scene, along with favorite scenes from Dumb and Dumber, Anchorman and Saturday Night Live. You can also experience a classic pie fight and even play action star in thrilling scenes with explosions and more. The best part? Your performance is stored on your LaughBand and sent straight to your email — a great souvenir to enjoy and share.

Quality Time with Johnny, Joan and George

When you begin your National Comedy Center experience, you will instantly find yourself standing among the work of legends including Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers and George Carlin. Much like the people themselves, the exhibits honoring the comedians are bigger than life, but here’s what you don’t want to miss: some of the little things.

The Johnny Carson Immersive Experience hosted by Jimmy Fallon celebrates the King of Late Night’s career and the impact of The Tonight Show on television. It’s a stunning experience to step into and enjoy. When you walk out, be sure to take the time to check out the display in the hallway — a collection of cards from Johnny Carson’s personal Rolodex featuring some of the most famous names in entertainment, the dates of their appearances on the show and Johnny’s own notes. The cards are a jaw-dropping who’s who and a fascinating glimpse at the National Comedy Center’s expansive archival collection.

The National Comedy Center announced last year it will be home to Joan Rivers career archive, including a file cabinet containing over 65,000 original jokes spanning from the start of her career in the 1950s until her death in 2014. The archives will be the centerpiece of a new interactive exhibit coming in 2025. You can get a sneak peek right now with the museum’s current display of some of Joan’s personal archives including a typewritten list of one-liners along with her hilarious list of “17 Ways to Handle a Heckler. It’s one more way the National Comedy Center lifts to curtain to honor the craft of comedy.

The George Carlin exhibit is one of the first interactive displays you will encounter as you begin your trip through the National Comedy Center.

Acquired in 2016, two years before the National Comedy Center opened to the public, the archives of George Carlin are a cornerstone of the museum and contain material the comedian saved over his 50-plus year career.

The Carlin archive includes his extensive creative files, annotated set lists, handwritten journals, scrapbooks, awards, letters,

clothing, arrest records and countless hours of video and audio recordings containing both released and unreleased material. This material has been digitized and is available for you to see and hear. It’s incredible to see what Carlin kept and how he organized it all. Plus, you’ll encounter delightfully unexpected items like sweet fan letters and thank you notes. Be sure to unlock this treasure trove of comedy history when you step into the exhibit.

Access to these bits and pieces of legendary comedians’ lives and their work is what we mean when we say “the story of comedy lives here.” At The National Comedy Center, you have the unique opportunity to turn the pages.

Comedy Karaoke

The bright yellow glow from our Karaoke Lounge invites you in to take the stage, step up to the mic and give stand-up comedy your best shot. You’ll have a little help as we provide the material, and not just any material, but the best of the best bits of standup from Jerry Seinfeld, Ali Wong, Jeff Foxworthy, Chris Rock, John Mulaney, Aziz Ansari and many more. All you have to do is just read it from a screen placed right in front of the stage. Even some of the biggest names in comedy who have toured The National Comedy Center have completely bombed and laughed their way through this interactive experience when they try to perform someone else’s act — proving, in the most hilarious way, it’s not as easy as it may appear.

Not quite ready for the spotlight? Not to worry. Our lounge is also the place where you can grab a seat, some refreshments and share a laugh with your family and friends.

Laugh Battle Match wits with your funniest friends and family in the stateof-the-art and hilariously challenging Laugh Battle. The goal? Make each other laugh for points.

Here’s how it works: we provide the joke to deliver to your opponent. You only get a point if they laugh. If they don’t, the point is theirs. It may seem pretty simple and maybe you think you have a great poker face but — is it good enough to get past the Microsoft AI facial recognition technology that detects even the slightest smile? (We do love an element of surprise around here!)

It’s a blast to find out round after round in a game where, let’s face it, everybody wins.

Comedy Continuum

The list of “Not-To-Be-Missed” simply would not be complete without mentioning the National Comedy Center’s Comedy Continuum. First off all, you literally cannot miss it. It is enormous — a 60-foot digital touch screen video wall filled with comedy history you bring to life with your LaughBand.

Descend a ramp into this sunken lair of comedy adventure to begin your exploration into the connections and collaborations between comedy’s most influential artists. Touch the screen and watch as the web of comedy starts to come to life. Piece by digital piece, you unlock the “six degrees of separation” between your favorite comedy stars and their greatest influences. You’ll be amazed how this huge exhibit reveals the relatively “small world” of comedy and how comedic talent is linked across genres and even eras of comedy. You’ll also discover hidden connections along with exclusive video content and other digital tidbits and treasures — incredible stories just waiting for you to find them.

One other cool feature? This exhibit can be tailored to the height of the user for maximum accessibility.

That’s just a small sample of the fun things there are to do and see at The National Comedy Center and here’s one more bonus tip: give yourself plenty of time to make your way through the experience. You definitely won’t regret spending a full day or even more exploring, learning, and laughing all the way.

After moving back home in 1990 from New Paltz, NY in the Hudson Valley, Patty Schwertfager began exhibiting & selling her artwork in Buffalo. Including juried shows at the Albright-Knox & many other galleries. Patty had also worked at a custom frame shop in New Paltz since the early 1980’s. So, in 1997 Patty decided to merge her two interests & open her own art gallery & custom frame shop!

Surroundings Art Gallery Custom Framing

unique, it’s best to bring your item in so I can give you an exact & accurate quote.

When I opened in 1997, everything in the retail area was handmade by the person that brought it in. After 20 years, in 2016 with a love of vintage & antiques & being in a town known for antiques, I started adding those items to my “offerings”. So, now I’m a fun & funky mix of art, vintage & antiques.

I’m celebrating this 27th year as the “first year of my next 27” she jokingly says.

Custom Framing for over 40 years, I’ve framed just about everything & I can frame almost anything! That includes sports jerseys, needlepoint, quilts, graduation caps & gowns & memorabilia, christening dresses & the list goes on! The fabric items I frame are all hand stitched to an acid free backing Never glued or pressed onto a sticky “self-adhesive” board. She has hundreds of Frame Choices. Wood or metal with a wide variety of styles & finishes. Sleek & contemporary to ornate, carved with gold or silver leaf finishes. You can also bring in your own frame, be it a frame that “has been in the family forever” to one of your own “finds”. People think in order for me to frame something for them, that they have to buy everything from me, but that’s just not so.

The Matboards I use are all conservation grade made from cotton, rather than paper which has acid in it. Some matboard finishes include linen, velvet, denim, raffia, rice paper, metallic & more! Merely getting a new mat in a different color will transform your piece & give it a new fresh look. The acid free materials I use ensures the longevity of your art or sentimental item. “Super plaking” is also available. Alternative to framing w/glass, this is best for posters & items not monetarily or sentimentally valuable. Everything I frame is so

The Artisan created items include original paintings, prints, photography, collages, glass, wood, pottery/ceramics, clothing, scarves, purses, wrought iron, local books, cards, calligraphy, pillows, Amish items & more!

Lots of Jewelry! Including beach glass & for 26 of my 27 years proudly representing Elaine Eppinger of “Classy Lady” jewelry studio, known also from the Westfield Arts & Crafts Show for her vintage & gemstones collections.

The Vintage & Antiques (the “New Old Stuff”) includes furniture, some original & some “flipped”. Also décor such as prints, glassware, crocks & fiestaware. Clothing including lingerie, dresses, shirts & purses. Jewelry, authentic vintage & antique, not reproductions. And an intriguing collection of curiosities & odd, interesting & beautiful little gems. The inventory is always changing, so stop by, we have a wide variety of finds destined to delight! Our reasonable prices mean most customers become repeat visitors.

The Concord Grape Belt is located along the southeastern shores of Lake Erie in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania, and is the largest and oldest Concord grape growing region in the world. The Concord grape is native to North America, and was first selected and propagated from wild seedlings by Ephraim Bull in Concord, Massachusetts in 1849. It was brought to western New York in the 1870’s where climate, geography, and soils proved to be very suitable to its production.

Established in 2004, the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of grape growers, juice processors and wineries, related grape industry businesses and regional organizations. Our mission is to encourage and support the grape and wine industries within the region, and to enhance the region’s quality of life. In May, 2013, the Grape Discovery Center was opened by the Heritage Association as a showcase for local grape-related products, and as a venue for sharing the rich history and culture of the region.

Tasting Bar. Enjoy a glass of wine or grape juice with friends in the Tasting Bar or on the Steve Baran Memorial Patio nestled beside a Concord vineyard. The Tasting Bar features local artisanal cheeses, cured meats, snacks, grape juice, and a weekly selection of wines from Lake Erie Wine Country.

Weidner BBQ is Family OwnedOperated

Try one of our original recipe favorites • Treat your guests to a homemade BBQ Dinner!

In 1956, Bert Weidner and his two brothers set up a small stand at the Erie County Fair and began serving BBQ Chicken. They slow cooked fresh chicken over an open flame all the while basting it with their own special recipe BBQ sauce until it was cooked to perfection – tender and juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside.

Three generations later, we are cooking it the exact same way and using the sauce as Bert and his brothers did over 60 years ago. Today we are still at the Erie County Fair, the Eden Corn Festival and hundreds of fundraisers, events and private parties all over Western NY.

Now, not only can you order our signature chicken, but you can also try our wood smoked pork and ribs, tender roast beef or any of our delicious homemade sides.

If you are planning a party or event, give us a call! We will take care of all the food, so you can relax and enjoy yourself. You and your guests will be happy you did! Contact us today at 716-992-4362.

Westfield, New York, known for its many grape vineyards, history both local and national and its close proximity to Lake Erie and Lake Chautauqua, is quickly becoming a delightful downtown shopping attraction for food, art, and unique shops. In the center of downtown, at 50 Main Street, one can find the Living Glass Gallery. Within its bright and spacious storefront, underneath beautifully arched windows and architecture, owner and artist, Denise Williams- Stebbins, proudly displays artwork and gift items from local and regional artists. From beautiful paintings, unique stained glass, mixed media abstracts, to nature photography, handmade jewelry, pottery and turned wooden bowls, there is something for everyone. Living Glass Gallery is also known for its custom glass art designs where Denise will help turn your personal vision into beautiful glass for your kitchen, entrance way or to accent any area of your home. Denise also offers art classes at her on location studio and is currently focusing on the art of stained glass, using the Tiffany copper foil technique.

Living Glass Gallery

Denise states: “Nature has always been the subject of my pieces; whether it is symbolized or implied, natural components

will always be present. I believe nature provides the most intriguing element of design through form, structure and color. I try to interpret what I see and feel in this most captivating medium of glass. A stained glass window can be a wall of light that changes throughout the hours of the day following the strength and direction of the sun. As light changes so does the character of the stained glass. The effect of light on and through glass has no parallel. Although I have worked in many mediums, glass is my favorite and I have stuck with it faithfully for 32 years.

At my Living Glass studio I rely on one fact when designing; The interaction of light, color and texture produce an energy that seem to enhance ones imagination and so anything is possible!”

Denise, is a former art teacher graciously retired after 31 years. Her approach to teaching in her studio is testimony to the dedication and support she provided her students at school. Denise has a special way of cultivating creativity no matter what age she teaches. That was always her goal in education and remains her goal as she continues expanding her gallery introducing new artists and supporting established artists in displaying their work. Currently there are 13 local artists in her gallery. Living Glass Gallery also features a new artist every month from June to December.
