TheCity of Jamestown is excited to reveal that this year’s official Christmas Tree will be a beautiful 40-foot Norway Spruce, generously donated by Woodlawn Management Real Estate. This wonderful tree will be harvested from a lot on King Street, right in the heart of Jamestown, and will stand tall as a symbol of holiday cheer for the entire community.

The City’s Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department will oversee the tree’s removal, with critical assistance provided by the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) crew and crane. Following the harvest, the tree will be carefully loaded onto a truck and trailer donated and operated by Lake Shore Paving, who have graciously offered their time and equipment to transport it to City Hall.

Once on Tracy Plaza, the BPU crane will hoist the tree into place, where it will be securely installed and prepared for decoration. The Parks Department staff will then embellish the Norway Spruce with over 3,000 energy-efficient LED lights, ensuring it becomes a vibrant centerpiece of the holiday season. Towering approximately 40 feet above its base, the tree will illuminate the heart of Jamestown and bring joy to all who visit.

The ceremonial lighting of the Christmas Tree will take place during this year’s Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 7th, marking the official start of the holiday season in Jamestown.

The lighting ceremony is a long-standing tradition that unites the community in celebration and holiday spirit.

MARQUISE BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

Hello!

My name is Ashley Whippo. Life threw me a sign to chase my dreams of becoming a bridal boutique owner. My great aunt had a bridal boutique and I loved spending time there helping out and seeing all of the gorgeous gowns, but my favorite part was seeing how beautiful the brides-tobe-were when they found the one to say YES too!

We have a need for this type of boutique to come to our community. My plan is to be the go-to location for all local and surrounding brides to come and find their dream dress. I am going to carry designer lines within my boutique, starting with Morilee, Lillian West, Adore, Blu, and Justin Alexander designer lines, and i’ll be offering one-on- one service to all brides to enter. I will also have a line of Generation Tux to rent or buy, local jewelry lines and bridal apparel.

Join us February 2nd, 2025 at the Northwest Arena for the 2025 Bridal Expo where you can see all the latest styles and gowns during the Bridal Fashion Show.

Marquise Bridal Boutique is located at 117 Chautauqua Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750. For more information call 585808-2771, visit www.marquisebridalboutique.com or email awhippo01@gmail. com.

LIVING GLASS GALLERY

known for its many grape vineyards, history both local and national and its close proximity to Lake Erie and Lake Chautauqua, is quickly becoming a delightful downtown shopping attraction for food, art, and unique shops. In the center of downtown, at 50 Main Street, one can find the Living Glass Gallery. Within its bright and spacious storefront, underneath beautifully arched windows and architecture, owner and artist, Denise Williams- Stebbins, proudly displays artwork and gift items from local and regional artists. From beautiful paintings, unique stained glass, mixed media abstracts, to nature photography, handmade jewelry, pottery and turned wooden bowls, there is something for everyone. Living Glass Gallery is also known for its custom glass art designs where Denise will help turn your personal vision into beautiful glass for your kitchen, entrance way or to accent any area of your home. Denise also offers art classes

currently focusing on the art of stained glass, using the Tiffany copper foil technique.

Denise states: “Nature has always been the subject of my pieces; whether it is symbolized or implied, natural components will always be present. I believe nature provides the most intriguing element of design through form, structure and color. I try to interpret what I see and feel in this most captivating medium of glass. A stained glass window can be a wall of light that changes throughout the hours of the day following the strength and direction of the sun. As light changes so does the character of the stained glass. The effect of light on and through glass has no parallel. Although I have worked in many mediums, glass is my favorite and I have stuck with it faithfully for 32 years.

At my Living Glass studio I rely on one fact when designing; The interaction of light, color and texture produce an energy that seem to enhance ones imagination and so anything is possible!” Denise, is a former art teacher graciously retired after 31 years. Her approach to teaching in her studio is testimony to the dedication and support she provided her students at school. Denise has a special way of cultivating creativity no matter what age she teaches. That was always her goal in education and remains her goal as she continues expanding her gallery introducing new artists and supporting established artists in displaying their work. Currently there are 13 local artists in her gallery. Living Glass Gallery also features a new artist every month from June to December. Details for upcoming events are listed at LivingGlassGallery.Com. Living Glass Gallery, 50 Main Street. “The Most Charming Experience of Beautifully Crafted Art in Chautauqua County”. A SEASON TO CONNECT AND GIVE BACK WINTER IN NORTHERN CHAUTAUQUA:

As the snow falls and the season invites us to gather, it’s a time to reflect on what makes northern Chautauqua a special place to call home. Whether it’s cozying up with a good book from the Literacy Volunteers’ Next Chapter Bookstore, marveling at the festive decorations brought to life by Embrace Fredonia, or enjoying the warmth of a meal delivered by Dunkirk Fredonia Meals on Wheels, winter showcases the heart of our community.

Winter in northern Chautauqua offers countless opportunities to explore and connect. Discover arts and culture through performances at the Lake Shore Center for the Arts or the 1891 Fredonia Opera House. Hit the trails for a brisk hike using the interactive Chautauqua County Trails Map at Choose CHQ. Or, immerse yourself in books and programs at our local libraries— each a hub of inspiration and learning.

At the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation (NCCF),

we know the value of these connections. Our mission is to enrich the area where we live, work, and play. Our vision is a vibrant, prosperous community rich in opportunity—not just for today but for generations to come.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join our campaign: Today. Tomorrow. Together. By establishing a named Community Fund, you can create a lasting legacy that supports the causes you care about most. Whether it’s helping the Boys and Girls Club or the YWCA of Westfield provide indoor activities for youth and others, ensuring Rural Ministry continues to feed those in need, supporting animal welfare organizations like the Lake Shore Human Society and Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, or addressing new challenges as they arise, your Community Fund can make an enduring impact.

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM LITERATURE

WHEN WEATHER OR OTHER FORCES DERAIL OUR PLANS

Storms, whether brought to us by Mother Nature or another external influence, are often the universe’s call for us to take a pause.

What we do with that moment is entirely up to us.

We may need to start a new habit, restart a resolution, or reawaken a hibernating interest. In reading fiction, we are granted the luxury of seeing how others work out relatable situations, a trial and error by proxy.

When we are given the opportunity to reflect, there are several titles that may be just the catalyst to make this winter your best yet.

In How to Read a Book, Monica Wood, presents us with three strangers, each with unique challenges, who discover how their lives intersect one morning in a bookstore. Violet who is newly released from serving time in a fatal drunk-driving crash, Harriet a recent retiree and volunteer at the prison and Frank, the retiree whose late wife was the victim of Violet’s accident. As Wood

weaves familiar and new literature throughout the story, lessons resonate, including the concept that fiction gives our problems an opportunity to breathe.

Ken Jaworowski provides similar for those seeking a bit more thrill and suspense in Small Town Sins. Follow three characters in a former, Pennsylvania coal town as they confront their past and navigate the future: a volunteer firefighter who finds and keeps a bag of money in a burning building, an ER nurse charged with granting a final wish to a terminally ill teen and a recovering heroin addict in search of vigilante justice against a child predator.

New this February, is a highly anticipated historical fiction. Isola by Allegra Goodman is set in 1531 France, where a young woman is left on an island in the ‘new world’ by her controlling guardian. Accompanied initially by her husband and nurse, who both fall victim to the conditions. She finds comfort in her faith and the will to live through the hard winters on the island.

When laughter proves to be the best antidote, The Wedding People, is the recommendation. Alison Espach writes with incredible grace, wisdom, and wit as she places her protagonist, ready to be done with life, at a resort with an entire destination wedding.

Benjamin Stevenson, an Australian comedian and author, now has three mysteries that are certain to yield a hearty laugh. Begin with Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone. He has a talent for providing an engaging, entertaining story that is an antidote for overthinking.

continued on page 35

Multiple nonfiction titles this winter are poised to put those seeking renewal, fresh perspectives, and continued improvement on the forward path.

How to Let Things Go: 99 Tips from a Zen Buddhist Monk to Relinquish Control and Free Yourself Up for What Matters, provides succinct wisdom on commonly misconstrued actions of care. This guide is full of encouraging reminders for what we may already know yet fail to employ in the absence of necessary breaks.

The author of the highly acclaimed Braiding Sweetgrass returns with additional wisdom from the natural world. In The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Robin Wall Kimmerer demonstrates how we can redesign our approach and enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship with our environment and redefine success when reciprocity is the foundation.

Need some convincing that Amazon’s “customer obsession” does not translate to community wellbeing? In The Everything War: Amazon’s Ruthless Quest to Own the World and Remake Corporate Power, investigative journalist for The Wall Street Journal, Dana Mattioli delivers a stunning exposé of how a strategy of manipulation created a co-dependent group of third-party sellers handcuffed to a captor turned competitor.

Many independent retailers offer online and delivery options. Bookshop.org and Libro.fm are print and audio providers who exist to help independent bookshops compete. When you choose intentionally, and choose to purchase from these platforms, you can nominate the store of your choice, within your community to receive the profits.

When you make shopping local and shopping indie a routine throughout the year, you create a ripple effect in the community. Local merchants are more likely to bank locally, shop locally, and hire service providers within the community. Local dollars spent allow merchants to reinvest in nonprofits and events.

Looking to join a book club in 2025? We have a new club forming around the New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. The first meeting will be January 15th at 6 PM at Yori Wine Cellars.

We see you; we thank you; and we commit to contributing to a vibrant and engaged future.
