Philosophy Postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities

Study at one of the UK’s largest and most highly rated philosophy departments covering all major areas of philosophy.

We are large enough to be in a position to offer an unrivalled range of around 34 optional MA modules, covering all major areas of philosophy, both contemporary and historical – and several more minor areas too! Our MA programmes are geared equally to philosophy graduates and conversion students. WHY STUDY WITH US?

• Alongside our MA in

Philosophy, we offer four more specialised programmes, capitalising on areas where departmental expertise is especially strong. • Our MA in Philosophy of Medicine is, for instance, tied to a major research project we host in that field, linked to the King’s Centre for the Humanities & Health. • Ours is probably the only department that can teach the whole history of Western philosophy, with no gaps, even branching out into Indian philosophy. We cover all of the core areas of contemporary philosophy,

from metaphysics to ethics to logic, too. Conversion students take • our ‘General Philosophy’ module, to fill any gaps in their background knowledge; while several more specialised modules are available to philosophy graduates, to build upon the foundation they already have. • We also run a special weekly MA seminar, where students from these various streams all gather to share ideas, plus numerous informal reading groups across a warm, collegial and inclusive department.

DEGREES OFFERED • MA in Philosophy – split evenly between philosophy graduates and conversion students, with different pathways to meet different needs • MA in Philosophy of Psychology – focuses on issues in philosophy of psychology and mind, areas of particular strength • MA in History of Philosophy – draws on departmental expertise spanning everything from the Presocratics to the Twentieth Century • MA in Philosophy of Medicine – appeals not only to philosophy graduates, but also to medics who want to explore the philosophical dimension of medicine • MA in Language & Cognition – spans philosophy, linguistics, logic and cognitive science

Philosophy is teamwork: one needs to work through problems together, through argument and debate with others, to make any progress. We put this into practice through special seminars where research students present their work and receive feedback

At King’s I have not only fulfilled my intellectual desires (although new ones were born along the way!), but I felt like being at home with a family that knows how to share philosophy. It’s a blessing I wish everyone could have! Dimitrios, PhD Philosophy
