LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

CAN LIMIT YOUR ACCESS TO CANNABIS Presented By:

P

roposition 64 became the law in California in November 2016 right? Right! Voters approved adult-use cannabis by 57.02% in San Diego County and the citywide average at 61.56%. And in City Council district 3, more than 3 out of 4 voters were in favor (76.57%) and no city district had a majority no vote. Not a single one. Given these facts, one could reasonably assume that people do not have to worry about their access for recreational use and certainly not for medicinal purposes. Sadly that is not the case. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted last March to ban medicinal marijuana in the County, that access had only been in effect since the first collective opened in July of 2014. And they made this decision mere months after the

voters had clearly spoken. The cannabis businesses who had already been issued licenses by the County were given five years to continue operations in order to recoup their initial investments. While it is possible that these companies will be able to do that, it is by no means

SUPPORTS

NATHAN FLETCHER guaranteed, especially as many of these companies had not completed their buildouts. The County is no longer issuing building permits, so many of

these businesses are left with partially completed projects that will never realize their potential. Now let’s talk about the patients and their access to medicine. There are approximately 500,000 people in San Diego’s East County. Once the medicinal dispensaries near El Cajon and Escondido and the ones in Ramona are forced to shut their doors, many patients will be required to travel great distances, as the farthest east dispensary licensed by the City is in Mission Valley and the farthest north is located on either Miramar Road or in the northwestern end of Sorrento Valley. As you can imagine, that will be a significant burden on those going through cancer treatment, on fixed incomes or who rely on public transportation. So, what can you do? The most

important thing you can do to guarantee your access to cannabis is to vote in the upcoming elections. The County Board of Supervisors seats in district 4 (central and coastal city including Clairemont, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay, Old Town, Mission Hills, University Heights, Hillcrest, Little Italy, Golden Hill, Normal Heights, Kensington, City Heights, North & South Parks, and Encanto among others) and district 5 (Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and the eastern backcountry) are up for grabs. If both of these seats go to pro-cannabis candidates, then we can reverse the Board’s ill-advised decision from last year and ensure access to cannabis for everyone in the County without undue difficulty and expense. The district 4 candidates are: Lori Saldaña, Omar Passons, Ken Marlbrough, Nathan Fletcher and Bonnie Dumanis. Saldaña, Passons and Fletcher have all declared their support for the licensed cannabis industry. Dumanis’ record on cannabis speaks for itself: her continued harassment and prosecution of a licensed medical marijuana collective in 2012 even after a jury refused to convict was nothing short of a personal crusade and a clear waste of taxpayer money. District 5 candidates are: Jerome Kern, Michelle Gomez, Jim Desmond and Jacqueline Arisvaud. Kern and Gomez spoke on behalf of licensed cannabis at the March 28 Oceanside City Council meeting. Desmond says he supports medical marijuana but publicly stated that he does not support having dispensaries in the County. OutCo, who manages Outliers Collective near El Cajon and San Diego Natural north of Escondido, two of the five County medical marijuana licenses, is supporting Nathan Fletcher in district 4 and is still meeting with the district 5 candidates. If you are a cannabis patient or customer, a vote for both of these candidates will help ensure your long-term access to clean, safe cannabis.

@ URBNLEAFCA # FEELGOODDRUGS

THE NEW STANDARD IN CANNABIS DISPENSARIES It didn’t take long for Urbn Leaf to build brand awareness with a tagline like “A Feel Good Drug Boutique” and sign spinners twirling Free Weed signs all over town. Whether you’ve watched a feature on the news, listened to a radio commercial, or hopped a ride on the CannaBus you’ve probably heard of Urbn Leaf by now - so what gives? Who is Urbn Leaf and how are they changing the standards in cannabis dispensaries? Urbn Leaf was established in March of 2017 by founder Will Senn. Will has been a pioneer in the cannabis industry for the last 10+ years and has worked hard to shatter the stoner stigma and negative perceptions towards dispensaries. Hence the bright, airy aesthetic and black & white color scheme you notice the second you walk through the doors of Urbn Leaf. Every product that comes onto the shelf is carefully selected based on quality and consistency by a cannabis connoisseur. You might see less products in Urbn Leaf than other dispensaries, but the products you will find are by far the best of the best in California. In the beginning, Urbn started with about 20 staff members and now one year later the team has grown 10x that amount, with no intention of slowing down. From budtenders and budbacks to delivery drivers and inventory controllers, Urbn Leaf has gone on a hiring spree to keep up with the demand of the southern california cannabis market.

Now that the Urbn Leaf brand has been established and business is booming, what’s in the works for 2018? New locations, music festivals, and community events are just a few things you can look forward to from Urbn Leaf this year! The next Urbn Leaf dispensary will be opening in mid-April and will be located at 3500 Estudillo Street right by the airport. This new location will service downtown, little italy, mission hills, and all surrounding neighborhoods. Keep an eye out for more Urbn Leaf locations in 2018 though as this won’t be the only one you see opening up. As the brand grows, so does the product line. Stay tuned for new product launches and brand collaborations dropping throughout the year. Urbn Leaf just received a manufacturing and distribution license, so you can expect to see more Urbn Leaf products in stores across the U.S. Off-site events and community outreach helped play a big role in gaining brand recognition around the city. In April alone, Urbn is participating in five off-site events and even throwing their own food and music festival called BAYKED on 4/20 at the Embarcadero Marina North Park. BAYKED will be launching on the first 4/20 since legalization in California featuring an afternoon of music, munchies from SD’s best food vendors, educational sessions from CA’s leading cannabis vendors, and so much more. Simon Rex aka Dirt Nasty will be hosting the evening followed by a special headlining

performance from Wyclef Jean and his full band. Although this isn’t a consumption event and is strictly educational, this is a major stepping stone for cannabis related events in San Diego. Aside from BAYKED, you can also catch the Feel Good Fam at West Coast Weekender, Earth Day, and Sunburn Pool Lounge. Over the past year Urbn Leaf has gone beyond the traditional cannabis brand and has really created an uplifting, Feel Good community for its medical patients, recreational customers, social media followers and staff. During the next year you can expect to see more merchandise options and online shopping features as the business expands and the audience grows. Urbn will continue to build their network and give back to the local community with more charity fundraisers and beach clean ups. Puff, Puff, Paint classes, Sushi & joint rolling classes, elevated yoga, and private weed tours are a few other events Urbn Leaf will be teaming up on. Last but not least, education. With the influx of recreational customers and new cannabis brands in 2018, education is key. Urbn Leaf is creating more educational content to provide to patients and customers so they know exactly what effects they’re looking for or which products they might want to check out when they come in to shop. Budtenders are trained extensively so they are well versed in which products to recommend when aiding ailments. Plus, vendor demo days are scheduled multiple times throughout the week inside the dispensary so patrons can learn more about the products on the shelves and ask any further questions they might have on a more personal level. The Urbn Leaf staff doesn’t just care about the community, they are part of the community and they truly do want everyone to leave the store feeling good about the cannabis they just legally purchased. If you haven’t been to Urbn Leaf, what are you waiting for?

Budtender r a e Y e th f o DO I NEED A CALIFORNIA ID TO GET INTO A DISPENSARY IN CA?

N

o you do not. As long as you have a valid government issued identification card such as a drivers license, state ID, or passport, you will be able to get into a dispensary and purchase THC or CBD products.

HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE BEFORE AN EDIBLE KICKS IN? This question is a little harder to answer because everyone reacts to edibles differently. Have you been drinking? Have you eaten? Empty stomach? Have you been in the sun all day? These are all factors that come into play. Most would say anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, but metabolism and how much you’ve eaten before hand could slow down this process to about 2 hours.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY CANNABIS FOR IT TO KEEP ITS QUALITY? Quality cannabis is not cheap and keeping it stored properly can help maintain its potency. The best way to store your cannabis is out of direct sunlight in a cool and dark spot. It is best to use a vacuum sealed or air tight container, this keeps your cannabis from being over-exposed to oxygen, which in turn can dry it out and take away it’s terpene profiles. 40 | PotSaver.net

CAN I GIFT CANNABIS TO MY FRIENDS? Yes you can give your friends and family who are 21 and over up to 28.5 g (about an ounce).

WILL GIVING MY INFORMATION TO A DISPENSARY AFFECT ME GETTING A JOB OR PUT ME IN A DATABASE? No, the doctor recommendation is protected by HIPPA, and the medical ID database and information collected by dispensaries are protected by privacy laws. None of this information is accessible to the public and that includes potential employers.

CAN AN EMPLOYER FIRE ME FOR TESTING POSITIVE FOR CANNABIS? Absolutely. Prop 64 notes that if you do not comply with your companies drug policies they can legally fire you. All companies have different drug policies so I recommend talking to your employer about what they are. Tip of The Day: Ask your budtender about saving with popcorn (small) nugs

= nug size can vary

ARE CHILDREN WELCOME INTO THE DISPENSARY? It depends. You can have a child who is old enough to watch themselves in the lobby but they can NOT come in the bud room unless they have a medical marijuana card. You can NOT bring in an infant or any child incapable of watching themselves. Please do not leave these children in the car to run in and grab your product, because you can usually expect a wait. #potsaver | 41
