PRO- Cannabis Candidates
Presented By:
P
rimary Election Day is just a few weeks away on Tuesday June 5th. The main event is the vote for Governor, but there are a number of important local races too, primarily the County Board of Supervisors districts 4 and 5, District Attorney and County Sheriff among others.
If you care about access to cannabis, you will want to pay close attention to the Board of Supervisors race. In March 2017, the Board of Supervisors voted to ban all medical marijuana activity in the unincorporated County, even though Proposition 64, which legalized adult-use cannabis, passed with 57.02% of the vote just four months prior. Polling indicates that approval is even higher for medicinal. The four existing dispensaries in the County have been grandfathered in for five years and will have to cease operations in March of 2022 if the ill-advised decision is not reversed. Patients in East and North County will have to travel significant distances to purchase their medicine, and customers at City dispensaries could see longer waits when County dispensaries close. Here’s what you can do to ensure access and ease: first, register to vote and make sure you register to Vote-By-Mail. The deadline to register is Monday, May 21st, and you can register online at sdvote.com. Getting to the polls on election day can be challenging, so If you’re already registered and would like to register to Vote-By-Mail, there will be an application form on the back of the sample ballots being mailed to all registered voters the second week in May. Vote-by-Mail applications are due at the Registrar of Voters by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29th. Finally, pay attention to the candidates and their positions on cannabis. California voters have spoken quite clearly, and it is time for elected officials to pay attention. If your local candidates haven’t taken a position, ask ‘em. Publicly. If they don’t answer, ask ‘em again. Remind them that every voting district in San Diego County voted for Prop. 64. Every single one. The following is a list of candidates who have spoken publicly about their support for adult-use cannabis.

Nathan Fletcher, County Board of Supervisors, District 4

Beginners Guide To Glass BROUGHT TO YOU BY
PIPE/BOWL: Ideal for dry herb. These are the most common for beginners, they are simple and efficient. Simply add the herb to the bowl and light while inhaling through the mouth opening. Dry pipes are commonly sold under the name “tobacco pipe”. They come in variety of shapes and sizes, pleasing both beginners and experienced smokers. BUBBLER: Ideal for dry herb. Bubblers are a nice way to get smooth hits when smoking. These pieces hold water, similar to a bong, but are typically smaller and don’t have a removable bowl piece. Because they hold water, this cools and filters the smoke before you inhale it. DAB RIG: Ideal for concentrates. Dab rigs are similar to bongs in many ways, the difference comes down
to the product you’re smoking as well as the way you heat it. In bongs you use a removable piece called a bowl, in contrast dab rig’s use a nail, this is the removable piece of the rig that you heat up using a torch. Most recommend heating the nail to a range of 315ºF-600ºF for a safer and more flavorful hit. Stray from heating the nail above this range, as you can experience unpleasant side effects.
BONG: Ideal for dry herb. Bongs are
most popular for smoking herb through a removable piece called a bowl. The bowl connects to another piece called a downstem. As you inhale through the top of the bong, the smoke is pulled from the bowl through the downstem and hits the water, filtering and cooling your hit.

Entrepreneur Feature Adelia Carrillo of Direct Cannabis Network
O
ver the past few months we have been able to meet up with so many hard-working entrepreneurs. We are excited to see the rapid increase of upcoming startups and brands in the cannabis industry. So we decided what better way to recognize these entrepreneurs than by collaborating with a local San Diego Cannabis startup called Direct Cannabis Network. DCN is a digital business-tobusiness news network covering the latest tech, entrepreneurs, and innovative companies in the cannabis industry. Each month our friends at DCN will be interviewing a local cannabis entrepreneur to share their journey, talk about what it takes to be a cannabis entrepreneur, and highlight the successes and failures along the way. To kick off this new segment, we interviewed Adelia Carrillo, the CEO of DCN. INTRODUCTION TO ADELIA: Adelia Carrillo was a natural entrepreneur, but never imagined she would find herself in the cannabis industry. She started building her 18 | PotSaver.net
career in the consumer electronics industry, however, things quickly changed due to health concerns. Adelia and Ali, her fiancé, found out that Adelia was pregnant. Very quickly after the news, Adelia was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Immediately following the surgery, Adelia’s doctors began prescribing her a variety of medication. Instead of helping her recovery, it worsened her health and condition. As a last resort, her fiancé suggested she try medicinal cannabis. Almost immediately Adelia began to notice a change in both her health and her emotional state. This intrigued her. She began doing research geared on the things she enjoyed, entrepreneurship, tech, and innovation. She quickly realized this was a missing piece in the cannabis community and industry. Adelia then had that “aha” moment and the idea of DCN evolved. Q/A: LEAVING BEHIND A CAREER LIKE THE ONE YOU HAD, DID YOU FACE ANY BACKLASH FROM YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS OR EVEN PROFESSIONAL NETWORK? Adelia: To be honest, I didn’t tell my parents right away, my dad is a retired sheriff for San Diego, and my mom worked for the District Attorney’s office. My dad actually found out via LinkedIn, and surprisingly, they were exceptionally supportive, especially when they realized how much cannabis actually helped me after the experience I went through. As for my network, it was a bit tough in
the beginning. Many people stopped talking to me, and many approached me stating that I was risking my career by taking this leap. However, I was honestly only concerned with my family, and since they gave me the okay, I didn’t worry too much about anyone else. What is interesting, is seeing many of those in my network are now starting to reach out asking questions about the cannabis industry, as well as medicinal cannabis and even introducing me to their contacts who are in the space or looking to get into the industry. LAUNCHING ANY BUSINESS IS TOUGH, AND YOU AND YOUR FIANCÉ BOTH DECIDED TO EACH LAUNCH YOUR OWN COMPANY, ANY TIPS TO OTHER POWER COUPLES WHO ARE GOING THROUGH A SIMILAR JOURNEY? Adelia: Well first off, the reality is it will bring added stress to any relationship. It is key to make
sure to find time for hanging out and going on dates, not always talking about work. It has been such a learning experience, and this journey has brought us even closer together. We push each other to keep going, we are there when one of us is feeling like giving up, or when dealing with startup challenges. The one thing Ali and I have incorporated into our daily routine is, once we get home from the office, we walk outside in the backyard and enjoy some nice flowers, talk about our day, our current goals and challenges. This
really allows us to be there for each other and get us out of our head to be reminded of the bigger picture. NOW, LET’S GO MORE INTO DCN. WHAT IS DIRECT CANNABIS NETWORK? Adelia: Direct Cannabis Network is a digital business-to-business news network. What that means is we are an online news source. We have focused on providing a voice around a specific niche in the industry which is the latest tech, entrepreneurs and innovative companies in the cannabis industry. Our mission as a company is to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem that elevates the ideas, connects the communities, and raises the expectations of the cannabis industry. BUILDING A STARTUP REQUIRES PASSION, CONSISTENCY, AND GRIT. BEHIND THAT, THERE IS ALWAYS A “WHY.” WHAT IS YOUR “WHY” FOR DCN? Adelia: The one thing I saw was the community aspect around this plant, and with DCN being on the business side of the industry, I felt we needed to make sure we were helping build the industry in the right way. My “WHY” is to make sure we don’t lose sight of the reason we are all here in this industry, and that is because of this plant. So many have risked everything and are still risking their lives for those who need this plant medicinally. We have the opportunity to build this industry better than any other industry out there, but it’s vital that we all continue to work together, educate each other and never lose sight of how important this plant is. AS AN ENTREPRENEUR, WHAT IS IT THAT MOTIVATES AND DRIVES YOU? Adelia: Making a difference- This may sound a bit weird, but I always wanted to do something that would make a big impact, and I know with DCN this is just the beginning. Each day we get emails or messages from our audience thanking us for the ecosystem, the community and the voice we are giving these entrepreneurs. It reminds me that we are on the right path. Outside of making a difference, is to also inspiring other women and men to believe in themselves and keep moving forward reaching their goals. Flexibility- You can work your own hours, wherever you feel like working and set your own goals and responsibilities. Just be aware that entrepreneurship is extremely demanding, especially in the early stages of growth, so working your own hours doesn’t always mean working fewer hours or working under less stress. Doubt- Unfortunately, I have faced quite a bit of doubt in a variety of ways, but instead of letting the doubt get to me, I put it to the side and use it as fuel to keep working harder. I look at it this way, I may be a young Latina who has never raised capital before, and who has never built a company that has the ability to scale like DCN does, but that should never be a reason to doubt someone who has the passion, grit, street and strategic smarts to build something that is needed and that I believe in. AT TIMES, MANY ENTREPRENEURS FORGET TO RECOGNIZE THE SUCCESSES, WHAT IS ONE BIG SUCCESS THAT YOU AND YOUR TEAM HAVE ACHIEVED? Adelia: As I mentioned before we are a startup, and have not been able to put any money into advertising, so we have had to get strategic and creative to growing our voice and brand. One of our significant accomplishments is that we have readers and viewers globally. DCN started off with only my friends and family checking it out and 20 | PotSaver.net
now with the help of our team and contributors we are now being viewed in all 50 states and 175 countries. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF AS AN ENTREPRENEUR? Adelia: Loneliness. Yes, I have an amazing business partner, I have a great team, and I have support from my family, friends and fiancé. However, at the end of the day I’m the CEO of this company, and every decision I make, every action or word I speak to my team, to our audience, and to our clients goes back to me. Every time we run into a startup challenge, I have to be the leader my team needs to keep pushing them forward. For every “No” I get from an investor, I have to stay strong and not give up. When we are running low on funds, I have to figure out how I am going to keep the lights on. No matter how much advice, or support I have, it still all falls back on me. What has surprised me about myself is that I always push through, I get through being uncomfortable and feeling alone which is making me realize how strong I am and what I am capable of achieving. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS WHO ARE STARTING OUT? Adelia: Always believe in yourself. As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” Believe that you can succeed, and you’ll find ways through different obstacles. If you don’t, you’ll just find excuses.

Topic of The Month
I
Cannabis Trademarking
n Ciniglio & Irvin’s inaugural edition of Canna Counsel’s Topic of the Month (See April 2018 Issue), we sparked up a conversation that introduced our readers to trademarks and service marks. Our opening article highlighted the requirements, costs, and logistics of obtaining a trademark or service mark. Rather than switching the topic entirely, we’ve decided to follow up on that conversation with a brief overview of why a business, and especially cannabis-related businesses, should consider obtaining trademark or service mark protection. The key function of a trademark or service mark is protecting the intangible aspects of your business. New business owners and entrepreneurs are generally proactive and assiduous when protecting the tangible aspects of their business, such as inventory, physical location, or even human capital. Examples of protection for those tangible assets is commercial insurance, and in the case of people, employee benefits packages. However, new business owners often fail to protect the intangible aspects of their business – i.e., ideas and goodwill. Without getting into the “legalese” definition, a trademark or service mark is your business’ signature. For example, if you see a silhouette of an apple with a bite taken out of the top right quarter on a product, you know it’s made by the technology giant, Apple. Consumers who see that mark on a particular product – a phone, computer, tablet, or watch – have preconditioned expectations and learned assurances about the quality, design, and/or novelty of those
24 | PotSaver.net
products. Those expectations and assurances might give consumers the confidence to choose, for example, Apple’s latest smart watch over a similar smart watch made by a competitor. Continuing with our Apple example, its registration of its trademark prevents competitors or knock-offs from subsequently using substantially similar trademarks. You won’t see any new large electronics manufacturers using marks similar to the Apple logo without Apple’s permission. This is because trademark and service mark protections prevent those competitors from using marks similar to Apple’s. Briefly, the reasoning behind the protection is to prevent customer confusion. Apple does not want customers attributing poor quality knockoffs to its brand and it doesn’t want competitors “borrowing” its own goodwill by confusing a customer into thinking they’re purchasing an Apple product. Importantly, your trademark can be a single word, multiple words, pictures, packaging, or any combination (and more). That said, it is very important for new business owners to develop and seek out protection for their business’ signature early on, because as the business grows, so too (hopefully) will the goodwill that you generate within the community.
For more information on trademark protection for your business, or general business legal advice and counsel, please do not hesitate to contact Ciniglio & Irvin via phone at (619) 839-9601, or via email at CiniglioIrvinLaw@gmail.com.
