Editor’s letter
Welcome to the summer 2019 issue of Power Electrics’ Inside Magazine! This issue has an introduction to Power Electrics’ new gas range of generators, we give you a sneak peek at the company’s new website and check out a couple of interesting sales projects. In employee news, Rob Huskisson and Tom Phillimore faced off against opponents in the boxing ring for charity, 16 staff members tackled the trials of Tough Mudder, also for charity, Dan Slee is going to cycle over 200 miles, for charity once more, and 35 staff competed in a Fantasy Football league to raise money for themselves. We’d also like to say a special thank you to Anthony Werrett for his ‘constructive criticism’ of the last issue of the Inside Magazine. We’re always looking for more news, images, case studies etc. for use on social media, the website and in the company newsletter, so if you have anything, please do email it over to me at sam.ashcroft@ powerelectrics.com.

BENEFITS OF GAS GENERATORS Power Electrics is further diversifying its sales offering with new gas generators from Pramac. In the past, gaseous fuels have been avoided in commercial and industrial backup power applications based upon cost effectiveness, power density and perceptions of durability and fuel reliability. This is no longer the case, and the benefits of this technology are now becoming apparent.
COST-EFFECTIVE ENGINES GENERAC Spark-ignited engines are readily available in high volumes, providing highly competitive advantage over traditional gas technology.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE Not having to deal with on-site fuel storage and polishing provides savings in operating costs associated with the standby generator.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Not only do natural gas-fueled engines emit less nitrogen oxides and particulate matter than comparable diesel-fueled engines, but they also avoid fuel containment concerns associated with storing diesel fuel.
4
EXTENDED RUNNING TIMES A key benefit of using natural gas fuel is increased run time. As natural gas is supplied by a utility feed, refueling is not an issue.

Marketing Chat A big project currently being tackled by the Marketing Department is the new website. While the current website still looks and acts up-to-date, we wanted to make sure the website is ahead of the industry standard. It’s widely accepted that a company’s website is the new “shop front”. It’s often the first interaction a customer has with a company and as such must look as professional, modern and impressive as our staff are. In May the Marketing Department helped bring Power Electrics to Birmingham to attend Utility Week Live, meeting potential customers and networking with suppliers.

New Website “The fold” - The part of a webpage that is first loaded and seen. The new website will have a dynamic, eye-catching video running in the background with three clear choices below.
Sectors - A customer’s first query is likely to be “do they understand the needs of my industry, and can they handle them?”. This “carousel” cycles through the sectors we work in, with links to relevant case studies - proving our experience in each.
About Us - Another early question will be as simple as “who are Power Electrics, what products and services do they offer? Can they deliver to my area?” This section provides a brief intro to us as well as an interactive map showing depot locations.
Experts - Blogs are a great way to show the customer that we’re experts in our field and the topics help educate them on the basics.

Healthcare facility upgrade As part of a major electrical upgrade at a healthcare facility in South Wales, Power Electrics supplied 2 x 2500kVA standby rated FG Wilson generators to provide backup power to the facility in the case of an emergency.
The Challenge The site at the healthcare facility presented some challenges due to a number of factors. Firstly, the layout and space available restricted a typical layout for 2 x 2500kVA generators with fuel storage tanks. Secondly, due to it being a busy site with members of the Trust needing access to surrounding buildings, delivery and commissioning on site required extra care and attention.
The Solution Power Electrics supplied 2 x FG Wilson P2250 diesel generators, housed within bespoke containers with an integrated fuel transfer and polishing system fed by a large common bulk tank. The bespoke containers ensured that the generators and fuel systems fit within the restricted space on site. Working closely with the main contractor and end user, deliveries and works were completed within off-peak hours, therefore minimising any disruption on site. Peter Hurndall, Power Electrics Regional Sales Manager said; “We worked closely with the end user to ensure the active and busy site encountered minimal disruption during the installation. Our dedicated projects team worked with both the main contractor and customer’s estates team to gain access during off-peak times.

Food and Drink Distribution Centre A national food and drink retailer required 2 x 1500kVA prime-rated generators to replace old standby generators at two of their regional distribution centres within the UK. The generators were supplied with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions in order to comply with the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) as the generators will be used to supply back to the grid for commercial gain. Along with the SCR systems, both generators were supplied with close fit enclosures and mains synchronising control capability. Prior to the delivery of the new generators, hire units were supplied to ensure that a reliable solution was in place to avoid any potential risk. Once the new generators were installed and commissioned on site, the hire generators were off-hired and returned back into Power Electrics’ extensive fleet.

The Challenge In order for the customer to export power back to the grid, the new generators were required to comply with the MCPD, a European directive to limit emissions of certain pollutants into the air. Both generators were required to keep NOx below 190 mg/Nm3.
The Solution By fitting SCR systems to both of the 1500kVA generators, it ensured NOx emissions were brought below the 190 mg/Nm3 limit set by the MCPD. The SCR system reduces NOx to harmless nitrogen and water. Bob Lovatt, Business Development Manager at Power Electrics said “The addition of the SCR systems to both generators ensured that the correct levels were met.”
21 Moorfields Power Electrics has recently provided 2 x 500kVA generators fuelled by Green D+ to Sir Robert McAlpine, contractors working on 21 Moorfields in London. The completion of Crossrail in 2019 is triggering a regeneration of the Moorgate area, and 21 Moorfields, located directly above an existing London Underground station and future Crossrail ticket hall, offers a major commercial opportunity. The development covers approximately 564,000ft2 and will become the new London Headquarters for Deutsche Bank along with further offices and retail outlets. Sir Robert McAlpine wanted to trial the use of Green D+ in order to minimise their carbon footprint on site and reduce disturbance to the local community.
The Challenge As with many large cities, London has strict emissions targets for new construction sites, set by the government to restrict the air pollution released into the surrounding environment. Sir Robert McAlpine wanted to go above-andbeyond the guidelines and provide an environmentally focused solution for their temporary power need.
The Solution To help reduce the emissions, Power Electrics provided Green D+ fuel along with 2 x 500kVA generators. Green D+ is a highperformance Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel which reduces emissions. While being used on the 21 Moorfields construction site, Green D+ saved an estimated 68.5 tons of carbon - roughly the equivalent of 14 personal flights from London to Sydney. Using the fuel also reduced NOx emissions by 29% and airborne particulates by 77% when comparing to conventionally used red diesel.
Tom King, Sustainability Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine said: “The trial has helped us demonstrate to our stakeholders that we are innovating to minimise environmental nuisance on-site and reducing our contribution towards climate change.” Lee Sharp, Sales Manager at Power Electrics commented: “Working with Sir Robert McAlpine to achieve their emissions targets was great. Green D+ is an easy solution for companies that want to reduce the Carbon, NOx and particulate emissions coming from onsite generators.”

Employee news Gold from RoSPA Awards Power Electrics has been awarded the Gold in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards for the third year in a row. The Awards recognise acheivement in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. Brett Mann described the importance of being recognised by RoSPA: “The RoSPA Awards are the most prestigious in the world of occupational health and safety, and held in high regard around the world, as winning one demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record.” Have you seen this man?! Dear Power Electrics, Thank you to your driver who picked up the generators at Worcester Racecourse. Even though the equipment was spread over the site and it was pouring with rain, he was still cheerful and never moaned or complained! What an excellent representative of Power Electrics! Many thanks, Jon Return address:
Happy Customer!
Midlands social The Midlands team took to the race track for a postwork social. Hopefully they remembered the No. #1 rule, it’s not the taking part that counts, it’s letting the boss win! Power Electrics Peddlers ride In June the PE Peddlers took the cycle path from the Bristol depot into Bristol for a few swift beverages in the Barley Mow. The group of 14 dodged daredevils, prams, dogs and each other, to arrive safely. Despite one looking disgruntled in this photo it was wholly enjoyed!

Fantasy Football For those who don’t take part in the Power Electrics Fantasy Football league, the idea of creating an imaginary football team and competing in a fantasy league sounds bizarre and a little boring. There is, however, an aspect of reality to it – the players are chosen from real teams and their performance determines how many points you receive. During April the leader board was led by Luke Scott in 1st, followed by Daniel Stallard in 2nd, Paul Smart was 3rd, Leigh Preece 4th and Kevin Naish in 5th. May saw Luke Scott continue at the top, Paul Smart take 2nd, Kevin Naish snatch 3rd, Leigh Preece stay in 4th and Daniel Stallard slip down to 5th. The real drama occurred as the finishing line came into sight. While Daniel Stallard and Leigh Preece held onto their 5th and 4th positions respectively, 3rd place was suspiciously snatched by the organiser, one Derek Clew. Paul Smart achieved 2nd place, but failed to pay-up and so received no financial reward. The winner with an impressive 2,376 (137 more than 2nd) was Luke Scott. Not only will Luke Scott have his name immortalised into the steel of the great Power Electrics Fantasy Football Cup, he also bagged £180.
