THE BLOODHOUND SUPERSONIC CAR WILL RUN FOR THE FIRST TIME ON OCTOBER 26TH Team Bloodhound will conduct a series of "slow speed" trials on the runway at Newquay airport in Cornwall. Engineers want to shake down the vehicle's systems before heading out to South Africa next year to try to break the land speed record. Nonetheless, engineers see the Newquay event as an important opportunity to gain some key early data on a rolling Bloodhound. "It will be a big emotional moment for the team," said chief engineer Mark Chapman. "We've gone from a computer design to an actual thing that will move down the runway. It will be a huge validation for the people who've stood by us all these years; it is happening. And, yes, it will also be a great shop window as we look to attract a bit more money to get us over the last few hurdles." Thursday 26 October will be restricted to the media, VIPs, sponsors, and members of the Bloodhound 1K Club. But the following Saturday will then see a public day of running, with an education day scheduled for the Monday.

In between all this publicity activity, Mark Chapman's team will be trying to understand how the air enters the jet intake at slow speed and what that means for managing the power unit's performance. It will also be the first chance to assess all of the electronics built into the car. "Newquay will demonstrate that the cockpit talks to the rest of the car, and the rest of the car talks to the cockpit - and the whole thing then talks to the outside world." And that includes feeding high-definition video from the more than 10 cameras that will be embedded around the vehicle's bodywork. It will be a critical day too for driver Andy Green, because it will be his first experience of the steering feel, throttle and brake action, noise and vibration - things that cannot be truly simulated in a computer.
The Bloodhound Car will run at 200mph on the runway at Newquay Airport
The expectation is that Bloodhound will head to Hakskeen Pan - a dried-out lakebed in Northern Cape, South Africa - in just over a year's time to begin its assault on that initial 800mph target. For this to happen, the next phase of rocket development has to be concluded. The Norwegian aerospace company, Nammo, will supply the motor and has a basic unit available already. However, the Bloodhound team wants the thrust levels increased slightly, and that requires a period of testing. "We would hope to be starting this programme in the next two-to-three months," said Mr Chapman. "We're fairly confident that we'll have a rocket being tested within six months; and then the fully operational rocket will be within 12 months." October marks the 20th anniversary of Andy Green setting the existing land speed record in a car called Thrust SSC. Two other key figures from that effort in the American Black Rock Desert have returned to work on Bloodhound: Richard Noble, the director of the project; and Ron Ayers, the aerodynamicist. 7

BLOODHOUND OPEN EVENING Power Electrics invited customers to The Bloodhound Technical Centre on 10 May to learn about the project ahead of the supersonic car's slow speed trials in October. Those in attendance were treated to a tour of Bloodhound's state-of-the-art facilities, enjoyed a presentation from Tony Parraman (Head of Sponsor Liason), and had the opportunity to see the car itself, which will aim to break the world land speed record. Power Electrics is playing a vital role in ensuring that Bloodhound SSC have the temporary power they need to achieve their mission, as they design and build a car to break the record. As part of a major ongoing sponsorship deal, the company is supplying the Bloodhound team with diesel generators and ancillary equipment for their major events across the UK. In addition to the tour, visitors were able to take part in a simulation of the ride that Andy Green, driver and current holder of the world land speed record, will eventually undertake.

GDPR
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION (GDPR) WHAT IS THE GDPR? The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the result of four years of work by the EU to bring data protection legislation into line with new, previously unforeseen ways that data is now used. Currently, the UK relies on the Data Protection Act 1998, which was enacted following the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive, but this will be superseded by the new legislation. It introduces tougher fines for non-compliance and breaches, and gives people more say over what companies can do with their data. It also makes data protection rules more or less identical throughout the EU.
WHEN WILL IT APPLY? The GDPR will apply from 25 May 2018.
WHO DOES THE GDPR APPLY TO? 'Controllers' and 'processors' of data need to abide by the GDPR. A data controller states how and why personal data is processed, while a processor is the party doing the actual processing of the data. So the controller could be any organisation, from a profit-seeking company to a charity or government. It's the controller's responsibility to ensure their processor abides by data protection law and processors must themselves abide by rules to maintain records of their processing activities. If processors are involved in a data breach, they are far more liable under GDPR than they were under the Data Protection Act.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF BREACHING THE GDPR? A two-tiered sanctions regime will apply. Breaches of some provisions by businesses, which law makers have deemed to be most important for data protection, could lead to fines of up to â‚Ź20 million or 4% of global annual turnover for the preceding financial year, whichever is the greater, being levied by data watchdogs. For other breaches, the authorities could impose fines on companies of up to â‚Ź10m or 2% of global annual turnover, whichever is greater.
HOW WILL POWER ELECTRICS CHANGE IN ORDER TO COMPLY? A GDPR Working Party has been established with representatives from key departments. The Quality Department will be monitoring new procedures when they are implemented and all staff will be kept updated when there are any developments.

URGENT POWER FOR ISLES OF SCILLY THE PROJECT In March 2017 the 55 km sub-marine electricity cable feeding the Isles of Scilly was severely damaged by an unidentified boat. It is the only connection between the Isles and the National Grid. This left 2,000 people relying on generators for power.
2 MEGAWATTS Power Electrics responded to the urgent situation, deploying four 500kVA generators and fuel tanks to provide an additional 2 megawatts of power while the cable was repaired.
FAST RESPONSE Transport Manager, Alex Harris commented on the project: “When it became apparent that one of the embedded machines on the island had failed, we responded by dispatching the machines sooner than had been planned, sending the four 7.4 tonne generators and their fuel tanks on the morning of Wednesday 15th March to Falmouth for transporting to St Mary’s.”

LONDON EMISSIONS SEMINAR Power Electrics, FG Wilson and Perkins presented an Emissions Seminar to delegates from a variety of market sectors on Wednesday 5th April 2017 at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Topics covered during the seminar included basic generator technology, the Medium Combustion Plant Directive and how the UK DEFRA Emissions Legislation may go about implementing the directive. Craig Wheeler from Power Electrics presented an introduction to diesel generator technology before Jonathan Rodgers and Andrew Bradbury from FG Wilson and Perkins discussed the upcoming Medium Combustion Plant Directive, as well as how to plan for the imminent changes to emissions legislations. All speakers on the day reinforced the importance of staying up to date as key legislations surrounding the issue of emissions continue to have more of an impact on UK industries. Power Electrics, FG Wilson and Perkins will be proactive in continuing important discussions stimulated by the event.
