Musical visionar y Danger Mouse, iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch, and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse have converged to create Dark Night of the Soul, a project encompassing a new full-length album and limited edition book.

ISBN 978-1-57687-524-7

$50.00 / Cnd $53.50

Strictly limited to 5000 copies, each individually numbered. Danger Mouse is an eleven-time Grammy Award nominated; two-time Grammy Award winning artist and producer. In a short time, he has created a diverse body of work, including albums with Beck, the Black Keys, Gorillaz, and his own hugely successful band Gnarls Barkley. He was recently named one of Esquire’s 75 most influential people of the 21st Century. Sparklehorse is Mark Linkous, a guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. He has released four acclaimed albums and collaborated with Tom Waits, the Flaming Lips, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and many others. David Lynch is a filmmaker and Eagle Scout from Missoula, Montana.

As half of the acclaimed duo Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse is no stranger to high-stakes collaborations. With the help of Sparklehorse, he has recruited a remarkable cast of contemporary artists to lend their vocals, including the Flaming Lips, Black Francis of the Pixies, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, James Mercer of the Shins, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Nina Persson of the Cardigans, cryptic Southern songwriter Vic Chesnutt, avant-folk icon Suzanne Vega, punk titan Iggy Pop, and even Lynch himself. To create the images that accompany the music, Danger Mouse chose David Lynch. Known for revealing the gripping horror beneath suburban banality, Lynch crafts eerie beauty from the most irregular of elements. For Dark Night of the Soul, the creator of Twin Peaks, Inland Empire, Blue Velvet, and Eraserhead, delivers a gorgeous, hypnotic series of photographs. This captivating project explores and escapes the reality of the world. The book package includes the full sequence of Lynch’s images, a foreword by Danger Mouse, selected lyrics, and an art-printed CD-R, in a run of only 5000 copies, each individually numbered. www.DNOTS.com

Judith Fox has always had two careers: one as an artist and one as an entrepreneur. After working as a photographer, writer, and business executive in New York, Fox started a service company in Virginia that expanded in size and reputation and was eventually purchased by a New York Stock Exchange firm. After selling her company, she devoted herself full-time to photography. Widely exhibited on both coasts of the United States, Fox’s photography is also in many private and public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, and the Harry Ransom Center in Austin. Fox has been featured in dozens of newspaper and magazine articles and interviewed on numerous television and radio shows. Her NPR program, On the Job, ran in Virginia and Washington, D.C. She lives and works in California. Roy Flukinger is the Senior Research Curator of Photography and former Senior Curator of Photography and Film of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published and lectured extensively in the fields of regional, cultural, and contemporary photography, and on the history of art and photography, and has produced or participated in nearly 80 exhibitions. “There is a sweetness in the light Judith Fox finds that softens a brutally unique and all too common experience. Ms. Fox has made the story about love and devotion when it might easily be expected to be about a more tragic and angry vision. But the tough stuff is lurking around every corner...” —Arthur Ollman, Director, School of Art, Design, and Art Histor y at San Diego State University Three years into their marriage, Judith Fox’s husband, Dr. Edmund Ackell, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Over the course of the next ten years, Fox watched as the man who used to per form surger y, fly planes, and run universities, forgot how to turn on the coffee maker, place a phone call, or remember what his wife had told him two minutes earlier. More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s. A poignant and beautiful portrait of a man with Alzheimer’s as seen through the loving lens and words of his wife and carepartner, I Still Do: Loving and Living With Alzheimer’s puts a human face in front of the statistics, exploring the disease through Fox’s intimate photographs and poetic writing. While the details of I Still Do are personal and unique, this deeply candid stor y of illness, aging, partnership, and loving is universal.

“This is not just one of those books that makes you think. It challenges you to think. It demands that you think, and to beware of all those obstacles that would stop you from trusting your instincts and finding an idea.” —Lee Clow, Global Director of Media Arts, TBWA\Chiat Day

Business/Marketing/Self Help Hardcover with ribbon placeholder, 5.75 x 8.85 inches, 136 pages, 20 full-color illustrations

$24.95 / Cnd $26.95

John Hunt is an award-winning author and playwright, as well as the Worldwide Creative Director of TBWA. In 1993 Hunt was intimately involved in Nelson Mandela’s election campaign. In April of 2003, Hunt moved to TBWA’s New York headquarters, where he helped reshape the focus of the network to celebrate original thinking and groundbreaking ideas. In 2008, both Adweek and Ad Age named TBWA, Agency of the Year. Hunt has since returned to South Africa, where he continues his Worldwide role. Sam Nhlengethwa is a collagist, painter, and jazz fanatic. After being named South Africa’s Young Artist of the year in 1994, Nhlengethwa quickly gathered global recognition. His work has been shown at the National Museum of African Art, D.C.; Whitechapel Gallery, London; and was reproduced in The 20th Century Art Book (Phaidon Press, 1996). From humble beginnings, Nhlengethwa’s talent, although forged during the apartheid years, has always reflected a calm celebration of the human spirit.

As an award-winning playwright, author, and Worldwide Creative Director of TBWA, John Hunt has witnessed again and again the power of original thinking to transform both companies and individuals. In The Art of the Idea, Hunt addresses everyone from the global boardroom to the man on the street, bridging the gap with ease. Few can argue with Hunt’s claim that it is ideas that move the world forward, and he refreshingly articulates that anyone can play: there is no hierarchy to original thinking. The Art of the Idea provides a toolbox for achieving excellence and offers a new way of defining your world. By illustrating how to create space so ideas can breathe, it provides a lifeline to those who find themselves stuck in a rut. Unassuming, original, and accessible, the publication includes insights by this leader in creative thinking, and is accompanied by 20 original paintings and collages by the internationally acclaimed South African ar tist Sam Nhlengethwa. The Art of the Idea grants permission to trust your instincts, endure initial ridicule, and practice thinking as a team sport. Whatever your idea is about ideas, this book will change it.

When Queen Elizabeth’s 2009 New Year’s Honors List was announced recently, Benson was named a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). Benson has had 40 one-man exhibitions of his work in the U.S. and Europe and is the author of 13 books including R.F.K.: A Photographer’s Journal (powerHouse Books, 2008), and Harry Benson’s America (Harry N. The Harry Benson Book is a visual celebration of Benson’s incomparable career. Organized into chapters on celebrity, art, fashion, sports, politics, and photojournalism, The Harry Benson Book features a distinctive mix of iconic images alongside never-before-published photographs of Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Billy Graham, Bobby Fischer, Muhammad Ali, the Beatles, Sonny Liston, Chuck Berry, O.J. The Extravagant World of Child Beauty Pageants By Susan Anderson Foreword by Simon Doonan Introduction by Robert Greene

High Glitz is a close-up and intimate look at America’s child beauty pageants, and in turn our society’s obsession with youth, beauty, fame, and fortune. Susan Anderson’s vibrant portraits of pageant contestants twist notions of sexuality and identity, with a new perspective on this uniquely American subculture.

Beauty/Photography/Parenting Decisions Hardcover, 8.75 x 9.75 inches, 144 pages, 90 four-color photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-514-8

$39.95 / Cnd $42.95

Susan Anderson is a Los Angeles based commercial, editorial, and fine art photographer, specializing in portraiture, beauty, fashion, and conceptual/narrative work. Having earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree form the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, Anderson relocated to Los Angeles in 2001. Her work has appeared in a variety of magazines including Los Angeles, People, Glamour, The Robb Report, and Playboy. Her fine-art work is represented by TORCH Gallery in Amsterdam and Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles. Simon Doonan is a writer, bon vivant, fashion commentator, and window-dresser. He writes a column for the New York Observer entitled, “Simon Says.” He has also written four books including Confessions of a Window Dresser (Studio, 1998), and Eccentric Glamour (Simon & Schuster, 2008). Robert Greene has authored many books including, The 48 Laws of Power (Viking, 1998), The Art of Seduction (Penguin, 2001), and The 33 Strategies of War (Penguin, 2006). He is currently working on a book, The 50th Law coauthored by 50 Cent, to be released later this year by HarperStudio.

“High Glitz” is a subgenre of child beauty pageants characterized by couture “glitz” costumes and a broad array of cosmetic preparations including, among other tricks of the trade: glamour makeup, elaborate hairstyles, and “flippers” (false front teeth veneers). Anderson’s stunning visuals are complimented by a “High Glitz Style Guide,” defining and providing examples of the following categories: Beauty/ Formal Wear, Western Wear, Sportswear, and Swimwear, with a special section on hairstyles such as “the Barbie” and the “Up-do.” Each year as many as 100,000 children under the age of 12 participate in U.S. child beauty pageants, and it has recently become a billion-dollar industry. Parents invest thousands of dollars on costumes and private coaches to give their children a competitive edge. Countless hours are spent by professional hair and makeup artists on each child in preparation for the competition. The girls are spray-tanned, made-up, and groomed to a glossy perfection. Anderson captures the results of this time-consuming transformation process in exquisite detail. In seeing how our society’s values of beauty, glamour, and celebrity are reflected in the hopes and dreams of thousands of young girls, we come to see that these pageants are a reflection of American culture itself.

Blues, Booze, & BBQ Photographs by Michael Loyd Foreword by David Alan Harvey

Young

“The Mississippi River Delta is flat country. Not a hill in sight. It is often way too cold or way too hot. But there is a subtle beauty to it. Large plantation owners used to rule this delta country and I imagine what it may have been like 100 years ago. I can almost smell the history as a thunderstorm rolls loud and black across the flats, creating waves in the wheat fields resembling a green tumultuous sea. Blues/Photography/Delta Studies Hardcover, 12.25 x 8.125 inches, 112 pages, 80 four-color photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-512-4

$39.95 / Cnd $42.95

Michael Loyd Young lives in Houston, Texas. Since 2002 Young has worked on several projects, traveling to 21 different countries documenting cultural symbols and the impact they have on the daily lives of the people he photographs. This is Young’s first book. All proceeds will be donated to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississppi. He is currently working on his second book, documenting the hunting and fishing culture along the Gulf Coast, from southern Texas to the Florida Everglades. David Alan Harvey discovered photography at an early age and quickly began photographing his family and neighborhood. At 20 Harvey lived with, and documented the lives of a black family living in Virginia. These photographs were self-published in his first book, Tell It Like It Is. Harvey went on to shoot over 40 essays for National Geographic magazine and publish Cuba (National Geographic, 2000), Divided Soul (Phaidon, 2003), and Living Proof (powerHouse Books, 2007). Harvey has been at Magnum Photos since 1993 and lives in New York.

“From these former cotton fields came a new art form. Out of commerce, out of slavery, out of greed, out of necessity, out of Africa, came the BLUES. Yes, the music: blues, jazz, rock n’ roll, and rap came from these cotton fields. Out of these cotton fields and out of these little one-room churches came the voice of an enslaved people. The voice of the men and women that toiled in these fields is the blues, and it is still a voice heard around the world.” —David Alan Harvey Blues, Booze, & BBQ, the first book by Michael Loyd Young, documents the 150 miles of Highway 61, the famed blacktop road snaking from Memphis, Tennessee down to Greenville, Mississippi. At the halfway point, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, sits Clarksdale, the city considered the birthplace of the blues and the location of Robert Johnson’s famed “Cross Road Blues” intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 49. The Delta has been home to blues legends such as Charley Patton, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Ike Turner, Cadillac John Nolden, B.B. King, T-Model Ford, Mississippi Slim, Big Jack Johnson, and Willie King, among countless others whose music has become the glue that holds these communities together as they struggle to survive. Young’s photographs, taken at juke joints, in private homes, or while just hanging out, illustrate the bond blues creates between the Delta and its people. It is through this music that the people pass on their heritage and culture to future generations. Author proceeds will be donated to the Delta Blues Museum.

The Art of Skateboarding Photography By Mike Blabac With J. Grant Brittain and Jake Phelps

“It’s rad what I do.” —Mike Blabac

SkateBoarding/Action Sports/Photography Clothbound, 10.5 x 13.5 inches, 224 pages, 120 four-color and black-andwhite photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-515-5

Mike Blabac is one of the preeminent skateboard photographers of his generation. His career has been built on a strong work ethic, a small dose of good fortune, and an undying love for riding on a small board with four wheels. His parents gave him his first camera at age 13, but he didn’t grasp the full power of photography until he started looking at skateboard magazines. In the early 90s, Blabac caught his first break. He began taking pictures of a rising skater named Josh Kalis, and an image off the first roll he shot ran as a full page in TransWorld SKATEboarding magazine. Soon after, Blabac moved to California, where his career took off. He began shooting spreads and covers for the top skateboard magazines, including Thrasher and Skateboarder, and eventually became staff photographer for Mad Circle and Girl Skateboards. In 1999, Blabac joined friends Ken Block and Damon Way and helped to shape the image of their rapidly expanding skate shoe company, DC Shoes. J. Grant Brittain is a legendary skate photographer and founding photo editor of The Skateboard Mag, a groundbreaking publication he helped launch in 2004, and TransWorld SKATEboarding, the largest circulation skateboarding magazine in the world. Over his career, Brittain has captured nearly all of the best skateboarders of the last three decades in hundreds of classic photographs. Jake Phelps is the longtime editor of Thrasher magazine and one of the most colorful characters in the skateboarding industry. Never one to shy away from controversy, Phelps embodies his magazine’s f*** you attitude, maintaining that skateboarding is an art and a lifestyle without rules or authority figures to decide what is right or wrong.

Blabac Photo: The Art of Skateboarding Photography is a stunning chronicle of a youth movement as seen through the lens of Mike Blabac, a man who is as dedicated to his craft as he is to the skateboarding lifestyle that inspired it. For millions of people around the world, skateboarding is more than a mere hobby or a sport—it’s a way of life that has shaped everything from fashion and music, to video games and art. Blabac Photo proves that point with 300 awe-inspiring images that communicate the stories and exploits of some of the most creative athletes to ever step on a skateboard including Eric Koston, Stevie Williams, Colin McKay, Rob Dyrdek, and Danny Way. As skateboarding evolved over time, from a hobby for kids on the Venice boardwalk into a global culture, skate legends were born, records were broken, titans of industry materialized—and Mike Blabac was there to document the history of the movement as it developed before his eyes.

Sound kapital Photographs by Matthew Niederhauser Illustrations by Chairman Ca CD produced by Yuli Chen

Music/Style/Chinese Punk Hardcover, 6.75 x 9.25 inches, 176 pages, 125 four-color photographs, CD sampler included

After studying anthropology at Columbia University, Matthew Niederhauser split his time between the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and the International Center of Photography, before returning to Beijing as a full-time freelance photographer. Over the past year, his work covering youth culture in China has appeared in The New Yorker, Time, The Washington Post, PDN, and the Guardian Weekly amongst others. While his nights are spent photographing Beijing’s underground music scene, Niederhauser also works on a large-format, photodocumentar y project entitled Visions of Modernity that investigates urban development and new architecture in China’s swelling capital. Chairman Ca is an illustrator and graphic novelist based in Beijing. After graduating from the Communication University of China in 2006, he helped found the Cult Youth Collective, and subsequently produced two anthologies of the group’s comics and graphic shor ts. His sometimes morbid but engrossing images mirror the kaleidoscope of often-conflicting interests, desires, and traditions found in modern China. Yuli Chen is a music producer and sound engineer based in Beijing who grew up in Paris and was trained in New York City. Most notably, he recorded, mixed, and produced the music for the Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, working closely with Director Zhang Yimou to create a fascinating score that fused both western and eastern sensibilities. As a trusted indie music producer, Yuli Chen continues to work on a dozen highly-acclaimed projects in China.

China exists today in a liminal realm, caught between the socialist idealism of old and a calamitous drive for wealth spurned by recent free-market reforms. This seemingly unbridgeable gap tears at the country’s social fabric while provoking younger generations to greater artistic heights. The unique sound emerging from Beijing’s underground delves deeply into this void, aggressively questioning the moral and social basis of China’s fragile modernity even as it subsists upon it. A formidable new wave of Chinese musicians is taking the city by storm. Revolving around four venues spread across Beijing, a burgeoning group of performers are working outside government-controlled media channels, and in the process, capturing the attention of the international music community. They now constitute a fresh, independent voice in a country renowned for creative conformity and saccharine Cantonese pop. In Sound Kapital, photographer Matthew Niederhauser captures the energy of the personalities and performers at D-22, Yugong Yishan, 2 Kolegas, and MAO Livehouse. These revolutionary Beijing nightclubs remain at the core of the city’s creative explosion by hosting an eclectic mix of punk, experimental, rock, and folk performances. Included with the book are concert posters and illustrations that encapsulate the underground scene in Beijing, as well as a CD sampler of the new music being produced. There is no doubt that these musicians will continue to break ground within Beijing’s nascent artistic landscape, helping to push the boundaries of an already expanding realm of independent thought and musical expression in China.

Down and Dirty Off-Road Racing By Theresa Ortolani Introduction by Ezra Dyer Design Direction by Eddie Brannan, Design by Alexander Wolf

Nathan Kanney lost his spleen in Poland.

Extreme Sports/Motocross/Enduro/Off-Road Hardcover, 8.5 x 11.175 inches, 144 pages, 175 four-color photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-517-9

$35.00 / Cnd $37.50

Theresa Ortolani is a Brooklyn-based photographer. She received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts at Boston University and was awarded a Sojourner Truth Fellowship for graduate studies in Photography. She has taught, developed, and directed photography programs in conjunction with the Ansel Adams Center, the San Francisco Art Institute, NYU, and SUNY. Her work has appeared in several magazines, including Best Life, Blueprint, BUST, Travel & Leisure, and WWD.

Kanney, the main subject of Theresa Ortolani’s Endurance, crashed his dirt bike during the 2004 International Six Days Enduro race in Poland, but he kept going until he was pulled from the race and taken to the hospital. Doctors removed his ruptured spleen and told him he would have died if he had stayed in the race any longer. That’s the MO of the off-road motorcycle world: unless you’re on the verge of death, you stay on the throttle. In an age where many high-adrenaline sports have become watered-down exercises in marketing, dirt bike racing remains intensely raw; a dangerous enterprise populated with a colorful, profane cast of daredevils. Ortolani applies an artist’s eye to this unforgiving sport and the riders who pursue it, resulting in an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes window into this punishing competition.

Ezra Dyer is a journalist who covers cars for Men’s Journal, Esquire, The New York Times, and Automobile Magazine, among other publications. A multiple International Automotive Media Awards-winner, Dyer earned a 2008 Folio Eddie Award gold medal for his Automobile feature story on the Smart Car.

Endurance offers embedded access and a scope that spans three years of off-road racing. Ortolani began shooting Kanney at a race in 2006 in which Kanney made Grand National Cross Countr y histor y, and Ortolani became hooked on a sport that is at turns beautiful and inescapably brutal. Ortolani traveled thousands of miles, across the U.S. and Europe, in the process capturing Kanney’s ascent from underdog privateer to KTM Factory Team rider—an achievement that required beating world champions riding bikes three times the cost of his.

Eddie Brannan is the Creative Director of CITY Magazine. One of the founding editors of Trace Magazine, he went on to become Creative Director of The Fader, BlackBook, and SPREAD ArtCulture magazines. He’s a contributing editor to Big and Big Man magazines, and has worked on advertising and branding projects for clients including Alexander McQueen/Puma, and Lexus. CITY Magazine Design Director, Alexander Wolf, joins him in the design of Endurance.

Endurance includes photographs of Kanney’s world-champion competitors and teammates including David Knight, Juha Salminen, Mika Ahola, Anders Eriksson, Bartosz Oblucki, and Ryan Mills, with cameo appearances by Travis Pastrana and Carey Hart. Among the many interview subjects are Nathan Kanney, Carrie Coombs Russell, Jason Weigandt, Jerry Bernardo, Jonty Edmunds, Jesse Ziegler, Steve Hatch, and Anders Eriksson.

short track Photographs by Jake Mendel Essay by Darius Himes

Racing/SPORTS/D.I.Y. AUTO Hardcover, 9.25 x 12.25 inches, 112 pages, 75 duotone photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-510-0

Short Track documents the world of semi-professional dirt track racing: from the downtrodden bombers and high-end stock cars, to the fans, drivers, and mechanics’ lives on and off the track. With roots going back to prohibition-era rum runners, stock car racing has evolved into a national phenomenon and become America’s second-most watched televised sport. For racing enthusiasts, hot days spent sweating over busted engines and damaged bodies give way to nights of tearing up the earth in front of a crowd, mud spraying from tires with the pedal jammed down and the adrenaline cranked up.

$35.00 / Cnd $37.50

Jake Mendel is a photographer living in Santa Fe. He was born and raised in Alabama, and he received his BS from the University of Alabama in 1971. Although he harbored a passion for photography, he put it aside to pursue a career with his father’s company. In 1999 he left the family business to return to photography full-time. Since then, Mendel’s photographs have been included in various solo and group exhibitions throughout New Mexico and Alabama. Darius Himes is a founding member and Acquiring Editor of Radius Books, a non-profit, Santa Fe-based ar t book publisher created in 2007. Prior to that he was the Editor of photo-eye Booklist, a quar terly magazine devoted to photography books. He is also a lecturer, consultant, educator, and writer, having contributed to Aperture, Blind Spot, Bookforum, BOMB, PDN, and American Photo.

The “short track” is any oval track less than a half-mile round, and countless semi-pro races are held weekly on dirt short tracks across the country. Drivers in these events race at breakneck speeds, seeking triumph while courting disaster, and spectators know there is as good a chance of witnessing a crash as getting a first look at NASCAR’s next up-andcomer. Mendel traveled to the Deep South, Arizona, and New Mexico—hotbeds of stock car racing—in order to capture the raw power and gritty determination of life on the short track. As most drivers can’t afford their expensive hobby, many rely on assistance from family and friends, and even from fellow competitors, in order to maintain their cars. But for the diehards, stock car racing is more than a sport; it is a way of life. Short Track puts readers in the passenger’s seat for an up close ride-along through the world of America’s most dangerous, grease-splattered, high-octane, pastime.

Sandhogs By Gina LeVay Foreword by Bonnie Yochelson

ISBN 978-1-57687-523-0

$40.00 / Cnd $42.95

Gina LeVay was born in Chicago and holds an MFA in Photo and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. LeVay works both in the U.S. and abroad, on independent and commissioned projects. Her award-winning work “The Sandhog Project,” was exhibited as a large-scale photo and video installation at New York’s Grand Central Terminal in 2006. She is currently based in New York City. Bonnie Yochelson is an art historian and curator specializing in photography. She received an MA (1979) and PhD (1985) from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and worked for the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art before becoming Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Museum of the City of New York in 1987. Yochelson teaches a seminar in the MFA Department of Photography at the School of Visual Arts and curates their annual MFA thesis show.

Sandhogs are miners 800 feet below the streets of Manhattan, tunneling bedrock to construct the largest unified infrastructure project in New York City history—the 60-mile-long City Water Tunnel #3. The future of Gotham depends on the efforts of these unseen miners, as this new water channel will supplement the two existing, decrepit tunnels, preventing a potentially catastrophic water shortage. It’s imminent completion will ensure that fresh, clean water continues to flow to every resident of the city. Excavation of CWT#3 began in 1970. For each mile tunneled, approximately one Sandhog has lost his life in a mining related accident. Generations of Sandhogs have accepted this daunting “man-a-mile” formula as part of the job, but few New Yorkers know about this mammoth excavation—or the story of the Sandhogs themselves. Sandhogs is an original portal to the unseen characters and systems of underground New York—revealing the essential “art form” of mining in the modernized city. In 2003 Gina LeVay was granted rare access to photograph the “hogs,” in the tunnel and at off-site locations. “The Sandhog Project” is a multi-faceted work of photo, video, web, and installation art, which explores the figurative and literal overlay, and mutual dependency of the surface city and this underground world. With the Sandhogs book and accompanying exhibitions, LeVay introduces the public to this vibrant and intricate subculture, bringing their extraordinary, subterranean imagery to the surface for the first time ever. The three main sections of the tunnel—Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan—will be activated over the next few years. The tunnel’s 40-year journey is coming to an end. Mining has already ceased and concreting has been completed in the areas that LeVay photographed. Soon 1.5 billion gallons of water will flow through the channel daily, delivering water to the entire city—a historic and monumental feat of engineering and a testament to the power of the human spirit.

THE brooklyn navy yard Photographs by John Bartelstone Text by Thomas Flagg Edited by Thomas Roma

Brooklyn/Architecture/PHOTOGRAPHY Hardcover, 12.25 x 9.75 inches, 112 pages, 91 duotone photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-511-7

$50.00 / Cnd $53.50

John Bartelstone is a New York based architectural photographer. He originally trained as a recording engineer at Syracuse University. After working in the recording industry for a few years, he enrolled in the Master of Architecture program at Columbia University and upon graduation, began a ten-year architecture career. That time was spent in the Engineering Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where a love for infrastructure was further kindled. Then, in 1996 he started a new career as a freelance architectural photographer. Thomas Flagg works as a researcher and instructor at the State University of New York, College of Optometry. Since 1966 he has been researching the Port of New York and its railroads, leading to professional documentation of industrial sites in connection with cultural resource surveys. He is a founding member of the Rail Maritime Information Group. He is also a member and past president of the Society of Industrial Archeology, and the author of two books about the rail history of New York Harbor.

New York City’s largest and oldest industrial facility, the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard occupies 250-acres on the East River between the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges, and is presently one of New York City’s major industrial sites. One of the last remnants of Brooklyn’s industrial supremacy, the Yard has experienced tremendous change: functioning from the age of wind to that of diesel. As a cradle of naval evolution, the Yard has had to reinvent itself constantly, and this is made evident by the presence of buildings and structures spanning from the 1830s to the 1950s. The Navy Yard was shut down in 1966 and reopened again in 1971 when the City of New York bought it with the intention of redevelopment. Great ships are still repaired there, and the Yard, now an industrial park with a variety of manufacturers and light industries, functions as a refuge from a city that has mostly forgotten that a mixed economy is a key to its survival. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, the first monograph by John Bartelstone, offers a quiet and striking look at the Yard as a time capsule of industrial New York. The Yard today is a fusion of the sublime and the practical, with eerie abandoned elements existing side by side with vibrant businesses. Bartelstone’s camera is partial to the former. The images show a place out of time, where World War II New York is still palpable. Bartelstone has been photographing the buildings and structures of the Yard since 1994. His photographs are neither a history of the Navy Yard nor a depiction of its role as a modern industrial park; the book instead offers a structured impression of a dreamscape.

Vivian Cherry’s NEW YORK By

Vivian Cherry

“Dancer-turned-photographer Vivian Cherry has been capturing the quirks of New York City for nearly 70 years, and has yet to grow tired of it.” —New York Daily News

New York/Photography Hardcover, 8.5 x 11.25 inches, 96 pages, 100 duotone photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-519-3

$29.95 / Cnd $32.00

Vivian Cherry’s work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the International Center of Photography; and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C., amongst others, and has appeared in Popular Photography, Life, Sports Illustrated, Redbook, and Ebony, as well as the famed magazines of yesteryear: This Week, Pageant, Colliers, and Amerika. She made several short films and worked with photographer Arnold Eagle as a still photographer on a film about Lee Strasberg and the Actors Studio. The author of Helluva Town: New York City in the 1940s and 50s (powerHouse Books, 2007), Cherry lives and works in New York City.

New York City is characterized by its sheer diversity, as well as the substantial level of open-mindedness consistently displayed by its residents—making it irresistible to all kinds of people from all walks of life. Centuries of large-scale waves of immigration accompanied by a steady stream of freethinking American migrants have created the archetypal melting pot that it is today. Photographer Vivian Cherry knows New Yorkers. This is reasonable considering she’s been capturing them in their natural habitat for over half a century. One of the last surviving members of the Photo League, a cooperative of photographers that in the 1930s and 40s embraced social realism, Cherry shoots her subjects against the backdrop of the city, combining informal portraiture with gritty cityscapes. Her first powerHouse book, Helluva Town: New York City in the 1940s and 50s, was released to critical acclaim. Now she returns with Vivian Cherry’s New York, a collection of work shot in the past decade, in which she continues to present her audience with pictures that are raw and real, while at the same time affectionate and warm.

flying pictures By Daniel Gordon Introduction by Gregory Crewdson

“A straight photograph is an exact representation of a segment of space and time circumscribed by the physical and optical limitations of the medium. So, although the representation is exact, because of the circumscription, it is also a visual fiction. Daniel Gordon explores this boundary with inventiveness, playfulness, and physical stamina.” —Stephen Shore ART/Photography Hardcover, 12.25 x 9.85 inches, 56 pages, 26 four-color and black-and-white photographs

Gordan’s work will be exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art from September 15, 2009 through January 10, 2010 as part of the New Photography 2009 show. He lives and works in Brooklyn. Monographs of his work include, Twilight: Photographs by Gregory Crewdson (Harry N. Abrams Inc., 2003) and Gregory Crewdson: Dream of Life (Ediciones Universidad De Salamanca, 2000). He lives and works in New York City.

“The artist’s short, gravity-killed glides are real, though his fantastical pictures suggest that computer-based trickery might have been used.” —The Dallas Morning News “On a fundamental level, the art of photography is about the miracle, and how to make the ordinary extraordinary. These pictures do that in it’s purest form. They capture suspended moments, perfectly situated between transcendence and doom.” —Gregory Crewdson Between 2001 and 2004, on the snowy fields in New York’s Hudson Valley and the rocky coasts of the Bay Area in Northern California, photographer Daniel Gordon learned to fly—if only for 1/125 of a second. Using a camera mounted on a tripod, Gordon frames his picture. He then runs out onto the landscape and launches himself into the air, while an assistant snaps the shutter. The images in Flying Pictures are at once pastoral landscapes and documents of a performance. Only after considering them for a while, does the thought occur that their fleeting bliss was swiftly met with physical doom—a crash back to Earth. Such a journey requires great humility as well as hubris, and a will to achieve the impossible if only for a moment. The project began at a time when digital technology was changing the role that truth has historically played in the media of film and photography. The ease with which one could now alter an image with Photoshop created a new sense of paranoia concerning the veracity of photographs. Flying Pictures’ unbelievable, unaltered images reveal that there never was just one truth in photography.

Band of Bikers 1962/1972 By

Scott Zieher

In the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan, Scott Zieher discovered a pile of photographs among the effects of a recently deceased tenant. These photographs, presented for the first time in Band of Bikers 1962/1972, offer an intimate portrait of a group of gay bikers in the city and the woods, and a touching snapshot of an entire generation at its carefree zenith.

Leatherman bike Clubs/Slightly fascistic Style Hardcover, 5.25 x 8.25 inches, 80 pages, 112 four-color and black-and-white photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-522-3

$24.95 / Cnd $26.95

Scott Zieher is a poet, art dealer, and avid collector. He has scavenged and collected books, photographs, art, paper, archives, and ephemera since childhood. His recent poetry has appeared in Tin House, LAB MAG, The Sienese Shredder, and KNOCK. His first book, VIRGA, the first of a projected 13 sequential, book-length poems, was praised by Milton Welch in The Believer as “doubly striking—both a compelling long poem and an exciting first volume of poetry…we will likely witness Zieher develop into a formidable poet.” He lives and works in New York City where he is president and founding member of Emergency Press, and co-owner of the contemporary art gallery ZieherSmith with his wife, Andrea Smith.

A pithy narrative can be drawn from these two groups of photographs taken a decade apart. The black and white sequence from 1962 reveals a hushed, simmering milieu romantically enhanced by antiquated photographic techniques. By 1972 the photographs are more confident and considered, as are their subjects. Newly aware of muscle and biker magazines and their heavy-handed eroticism, photographer and photographed instead brim with a subtly vibrant, chromatic pride. The photographs as a whole bring into focus a brief, specific period of relative innocence, when middle-of-theroad Americans more often than not failed to perceive the homoerotic undertones of their most heterosexual of institutions. With conceptual light cast by issues ranging from anonymity in homosexuality and underground motorcycle chic, to vernacular photography’s pop-culture ramifications, a warm and generous spirit of camaraderie pervades this subterranean survey. Like a real-world set for Scorpio Rising casually captured by an unpretentious extra, presented as Band of Bikers 1962/1972 and accompanied by an essay by Zieher, this found cache of old-school, leather party snapshots attains archeological significance.

“Robert Greene is not like other artists—or rather other artists are not like Robert Greene. Greene is like a diamond in the rough—one of those unexpected gifts that come along every so often.” —Jerry Saltz “With an abundance of wet, hairy nudity and tropical hues, Greene evokes summer at its sexiest and most seductive.” —Vince Aletti

Photography/hirsute attribute studies Hardcover, 9.25 x 12 inches, 96 pages, 85 tritone photographs

ISBN 978-1-57687-527-8

$45.00 / Cnd $48.00

Robert Greene was born in New York City in 1953. He attended Syracuse University, College of Visual and Per forming Arts, before receiving his Bachelor of Industrial Design degree from Pratt Institute in 1976. Greene is both a fine-art photographer and painter, and is currently represented by Robert Miller Gallery in New York City. His painting was included in the 1987 Whitney Biennial, and his work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Painterly rhythms have seeped their way into Robert Greene’s world of photography in Hairy, a collection of Greene’s images taken over many years, in many places, of many dogs, and many hairy men. An undercurrent of über-masculinity and its sexiness is revealed, yet not in the familiar form of muscular, hard-jawed, clean-cut youth. Instead, Greene celebrates a more restrained and naturalistic virility. Greene’s photographic eye is full of adoration for his subjects and their environments. There is a very intimate, personal feeling here; one not posed, but observed and captured. Greene shifts from long-range portraiture, to closeup shots where specific textures, shapes, and tones become the subject of the image. This abstraction weaves a visual spell, such that even those without a predilection for hirsute men will be enthralled. The photographs provide the space for longing, imagination, and adventure. Hairy is an unusually quintessential book—portraying an incredibly focused and fleshed-out vision of a very beautiful, hairy world where man, dog, and nature swirl together. Hairy will be released in conjunction with an exhibition at Robert Miller Gallery in New York City.

VIVA l’ITALIA! By

Ron Galella

For years, Ron Galella, “the godfather of U.S. paparazzi culture,” has provided the world a glimpse into the off-limits world of celebrity. With Viva l’Italia!, a deeper and more probing Galella emerges. He sets out to find his own Italian roots, and in so doing, takes us on a viaggio as he combs his vast archive for images of Italian and Italian-American actors, artists, and fashion designers, along with a wide range of other cultural icons.

Photography/Celebrity Hardcover, 9.25 x 13 inches, 200 pages, over 250 duotone photographs

ISBN 978-0-615-28678-5

$55.00 / Cnd $59.00

Ron Galella is the most famous and most controversial celebrity photographer in the United States. Dubbed, “Paparazzo Extraordinaire,” by Newsweek, and, “Paparazzi Superstar,” by the Miami Herald News, Galella is willing to take great risks to get the perfect shot. A native New Yorker, Galella earned a degree in photojournalism from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and began his career as a freelance magazine and newspaper photographer in 1955. He is the author of six books, including Jacqueline (Sheed & Ward, 1974), Offguard: A Paparazzo Look at the Beautiful People (McGraw-Hill, 1976), Disco Years (powerHouse Books, 2006), and No Pictures (powerHouse Books, 2008). His iconic prints are displayed permanently on each of the 11 floors of the landmark Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in both New York and San Francisco, the Tate Modern, and the Helmut Newton Foundation Gallery.

Galella’s tour begins in Rome’s famed Cinecittà where Federico Fellini relaxes between takes on a film set. It was Fellini who proclaimed, “paparazzi are bandits of images,” coining the word with his character Señor Paparazzo in La Dolce Vita. As he continues on, Galella presents us with rare portraits of Italy’s most famous sons and daughters, including Isabella Rossellini, Silvana Mangano, Marlon Brando, Monica Bellucci, Carla Bruni, and Sophia Loren. Never one to shy away from bad boys, he even includes the “Dapper Don,” John Gotti, emerging from federal court in Manhattan. The appeal and power of Galella’s beautiful photography is complimented by extemporaneous quotes he has amassed over a half-century of travel and celebrity encounters. “You look Italian,” quipped Anna Magnani as Ron captured her in Rome, during the filming of The Secret of Santa Vittoria, with Virna Lisi and Anthony Quinn. Some crossed the ocean, some changed their names, some were born in disparate locations as with Dean Martin of Steubenville, Ohio, and Frank Sinatra of Hoboken, New Jersey; but they all brought with them passion born of Italy—love of cinema, music, art, and fashion—as Galella triumphantly proclaims with Viva l’Italia!

For the past six years, Wax Poetics magazine has served as the nexus between music history and record collecting. They have published two hardcover compilations of the magazine, Wax Poetics Anthology Volume 1 and 2 (Wax Poetics Books, 2007 and 2008, respectively), as well as a collection of album cover art, Cover Story: Album Cover Art (Wax Poetics Books, 2008), which has received critical acclaim for its design aesthetic and unique content. “Wax Poetics lionizes that kind of nostalgia from its reverent history-lesson writing style to its gorgeous vintage photography…It’s a godsend for hard-core audiophiles but with immediate appeal for anyone who remembers the vinyl era.” —Utne Reader “[Wax Poetics] is to publishing what Soul Jazz is to the cratedigging community—not just a distiller of the finest lost sounds in funk, reggae, and jazz but a griot-like teller of their histories.” —XLR8R

Wax Poetics

In the 1950s and 60s, the popular appeal of the Latin big band sound turned its biggest stars into representatives of Latino culture worldwide. New York City was both a home base for the most reputed groups and a proving ground for young talent. New York City Latin Big Band: From the Catalogs of West Side Latino, Seeco, and Tropical explores this era of music through the artists and album covers of three prolific local record labels. This book focuses on the lives and recordings of noted Latin big band leaders on NYC record labels West Side Latino, Seeco, and Tropical, with rare historic photos and album cover art selected by respected Latin music collectors. It’s a must-have for record connoisseurs and art aficionados alike. A combination of visual essay and historical biography, New York City Latin Big Band juxtaposes the diverse art forms and design styles of the record covers with the multifaceted lives of the artists who created them.

That Summertime Sound By

“H anging out with Nic Devine, I found, was like hanging with your older brother, if your older brother

had seemingly unlimited financial resources and infinitely great taste. Every day would’ve been like the first of summer. We raced—he raced, and I stumbled—into the next room, filled with box upon box of dusty seven-inch singles. There were old soul records on King, Minit, and San-Su; punk 45s on Hearthan and Rough Trade; girl groups on Cameo and impossibly rare garage rock or funk records that might’ve been pressed in editions of a few dozen copies, regional treasures that had never escaped the heartland. A first edition of Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang lay over on a table beside rare and gorgeous volumes of Phillip K. Dick and Tom Wolfe, Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson. Counterfeit Unrealities, read one spine; Savage Night, read another. Apparently the VTE had been plundered before Marcus even knew where to find it. (And where was Marcus now, now that I was hanging out with our hero? I hadn’t seen him, and I doubted suddenly he would care. Now at long last it felt somehow like all of this, Nic and the band, and even the city itself, all of it was on me.) The amber lampshades were art deco, silver salt-shakers had the satisfying heft of brass knuckles. He blew dust off a record—“The Loser,” it was called, with the artist’s name scratched off the label, only the slogan, Tomorrow’s Hits Today, Right ‘Round The World, left legible—and sat it down gently on the turntable. I couldn’t imagine Nic knew anything about losing—the guy was too clearly a winner—but the song was phenomenal. Jamaican sunshine soul harmonies, airy as a helium balloon. As always, he played it at tooth-loosening volume. I felt its sweetness ripple through my sternum, a whole shimmering summer compressed into two-minutes-fourteen-seconds. Once he filed the record, I knew I’d never hear it again.

“Don’t you have neighbors?”

“Don’t you have neighbors…who aren’t sex slaves?”

He stepped back from the turntable, having set the needle down. We moved away as if he’d just lit an M-80, scrambling for cover at the far end of the room.

“Nah. I used to, but he moved.”

“Gee—I flinched at the concussive blast—“I wonder why?”

“I’m so antisocial, I got a disastrous attitude (Something something someone—I could never work this part out) was my kinda dude! I’m proper primitive, true caveman, Neanderthal! I’ll scramble your brains for breakfast, leave paintings on your walls! I doubted I could’ve said it any better myself, what it was like to be alive and confused, so happy I could kill someone and so angry I could laugh.”

Matthew Specktor will receive his MFA from Warren Wilson College in July 2009. He has been a MacDowell Colony Fellow, and his work has appeared in various anthologies. His screen adaptation of Shirley Hazzard’s The Transit of Venus was recently optioned by Warner Independent. He lives in Los Angeles. This is his first novel.

Freshman summer, 1986: You think you’re looking for happiness and you’re in love with the world’s best and most obscure band. Your roommate tells you both reside in Columbus, Ohio. These aren’t the first fantasies you’ve indulged. Blind faith, after all, may be your one true religion. In the thrall of dead philosophers and mad prophets on the radio, you charge off on a group pilgrimage to Anywhere, Everywhere, Nowhere, USA. You still believe in sex, drugs, and rock and roll—but you’re not sure in what order. You’re digging in the crates for that one true thing. You know something is happening, but you don’t know what it is….

“Sure.” He grinned, crouched over there by the stereo, at his feet different musical instruments: a Vox Starstreamer, Fender Jaguar, Burns Jazz Guitar. I had to cram this question into an interstice of silence; he was getting ready to blow my mind with another seven-inch brick of psychedelic brilliance, this one pressed on yellow vinyl. “One of ‘em’s upstairs.”

Matthew Specktor

That Summertime Sound is the liner note to that perfect summer single and all its aching echoes, written with the gimlet eye of Jim Thompson, Kazuo Ishiguro’s sense of wonder, and a true believer’s ear for music. “Matthew Specktor’s That Summertime Sound isn’t so much a book as it is a door, hinged in memory, and swinging wide to every tenderhearted throb of lust and longing and precocious regret still there where you left it, at the periphery of adulthood. How does the novel perform this trick? By prose as lucid and classical as Graham Greene’s in The End of the Affair, yet saturated in detail such that if you’d never had the luck to outgrow an 80s’ teenage dream in Columbus, Ohio, you’ll feel you had after reading it.” ⎯ —Jonathan Lethem
