LM: A year ago, my answer to this would have been decidedly different than it is today, in the midst of a very disruptive and unprecedented year. Concerns today? Staying in business, keeping employees on the payroll, finding gaps in the market to help drive a way-forward, and being brave enough to pivot into this new direction. While many Consultants look at a client’s situation from a linear standpoint (“How can I take what you already have and just tweak it to find a solution?”), we prefer to approach the challenges using an out-ofthe-box thought-process. I don’t want to simply improve or solve a problem for a client, I want to find ways to differentiate them from their competitors, carving a unique niche for them in an overcrowded market space. This not only increases their profitability, but it creates value for their stakeholders and customers, as well. PGMAG: As a leading global Consultant, what has COVID-19 taught you about how fragile infrastructures are globally and how businesses shouldn’t be fractured by the crisis but strengthened? LM: While this is a very disruptive time for business, disruption leads to transformation. As businesses around the world are channeling large portions of their budgets into cybersecurity and making sure their employees have access to technology and connectivity while working remotely, and as physical office space sits empty, we are embracing this as our new way-forward. Even when this pandemic stabilizes and it is safe to go back to “normal”, it will be far too costly and

inefficient to put things back the way there once were. We can’t go back to normal when normal was clearly the problem. KPIs are up, overhead is down… welcome to the new norm.
We’ve allowed ourselves to get too comfortable in the somewhat erroneous belief that our government will be able to come to our rescue in times of economic downturn, natural disaster, or, clearly, pandemic. Perhaps we are learning a hard lesson about our own role and accountability throughout this time of systemic recovery. As we re-evaluate our strategies, implementing new mechanisms and policies which will transform our operations, we must establish contingencies for the fractures which have appeared – and continue to appear, in our supply chains, operations, distribution, and services. It would not be unreasonable to use the past few months as the measure by which we reshape our future, ensuring that we weigh each catalyst and consequence to formulate flexible and adaptable plans for our new enterprise models. We are living in an increasingly complex, interdependent, and globally integrated world where systems that support the operation
of modern society are facing increased vulnerability and are more susceptible to largescale failure. We have the ability as business leaders and consultants to help off-set large-scale failures in the future by helping to shape recovery and resiliency plans as a central pillar of business for the future. PGMAG: Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, we have a responsibility to support and embrace small businesses. What should small businesses be asking themselves in the wake of the COVID virus? LM: How do we identify the gaps that I can fill? How can we shift our strategies and restructure to fill these needs? How do we differentiate ourselves in very crowded market space? All important questions to ask…all are difficult questions to answer. First, it is important to remember that nothing is as vulnerable as entrenched success. As entrepreneurs and business leaders is critical to make sure that we don’t get so comfortable in our operations, taking our successes for granted, that we aren’t constantly looking for innovative and out-of-the-

Ask yourself this…during difficult times, when we are facing lapses in the supply chain, operations, and offtake, how do we open our perspectives to recognize new opportunities? One of the most obvious ways – and keep in mind that during stressful moments in business, sometimes what is most obvious solutions can also be the most difficult to see, we have one very valuable asset that we MUST recognize and utilize…our employees. Too often, business leaders shoulder the weight of responsibility, keeping financial and operational worries to themselves. Your employees, however, are one of your most valuable resources for “hacking” apart problems to find out-ofthe-box solutions. Make them ‘stakeholders’ of the future of the business by showing them that you have confidence in their value and respect them as a member of the team by allowing them to participate in the revision of your business blueprint. By engaging employees, leaders can view the gaps and challenges in a much more open-minded manner. An employee who
PGMAG: It is not business as usual, where do you see the most need? LM: We cannot do business as usual because business, as usual, plays a role in where we are now…struggling to regain our footing. PGMAG: What’s the most important thing you are working on right now, and how are you making it happen? LM: I wear so many hats, and we are moving forward with projects on many fronts. As Akon’s partner in Akon Global, we are working on affordable housing “cities” here in the USA, providing
edgy, modern, sustainable housing at an affordable pricepoint. One of the greatest shortages we have in America is the access to affordable housing options that can make homeownership attainable across the community. And what we are seeing during this time of the pandemic, where so many people are facing unemployment, is that we will

PGMAG: Why is sustainability critically important to businesses as we move forward in this decade? LM: In this UN-declared
Decade of Action, we must recognize that we are the stakeholders of the future. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. And yet, we are handing our children the most fractured planet in the history of mankind. The future of our health, food security, and economic viability depends on how well we integrate4 sustainability into our environment, our societies, and our global economy. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a valuable roadmap – a framework for a triple bottom line future – people, planet, and profit. If we adopt the SDGs as the blueprint for our impact, we have the power to create an equitable and viable future for the coming generations. As business owners and as individuals, if we attempt to target all 17 of the SDGs, our impact will be token and diluted, at best. However, if we select one or two of the goals where we can affect the most change, channeling our focus and effort to that goal, we will most assuredly contribute a quantifiable change. We are the last generation who has the power to save the planet, potentially reversing the catastrophic impacts of
climate change. We are the stewards of the planet, and whether our planet thrives or fails is up to us. Each business and entrepreneur should make sustainability and corporate social responsibility an integral part of their business model PGMAG: You have worked with many women and minority-owned businesses. Why are inclusion and diversity so important today? LM: The United States has long been regarded as the melting pot of the world, uniting all nationalities, ethnicities, races, and religions. Diversity is the foundation of America and capitalism is important to the achievement of the proverbial American dream. While there are mechanisms in place to make business ownership accessible to women and minorities, too often they are left to navigate a rather complex system without guidance, mentorship, or resources. Further, once a business is operational when they need to re-evaluate strategy, formulate growth models, or look at market expansion, they are left to figure it out for themselves, since hiring a large consulting firm is usually financially unattainable. Through our

have an increased need for affordable housing solutions in the future. For too many decades, Americans had a “keep up with the Joneses” mentality, living above their means, with high mortgage payments and cash-poor bank accounts. We are being forced to realize that we can have much more if we learn to live with less – and by more, I mean we can have greater peace of mind, more flexibility, and more money in the bank if we have edgy and sexy housing options for a fraction of the prices that the “Joneses” are paying.

belief in and commitment to small businesses, we offer fully customized, one-on-one solutions, taking advantage of the incentive programs and grants which are available for women and minority small business owners. I fundamentally believe that consulting perspective and guidance should be accessible to everyone – not just the large companies with deep pockets. We must begin to support one another in order to contribute to the vibrancy of our communities. It can’t be us against each other, it has to be us together for the solution. PGMAG: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing women in business? LM: There are advantages for women in business, such as financing programs, concessions, and incentives, making the leap into entrepreneurship and business ownership more attractive and accessible, but there are also distinct challenges which women still struggle to overcome, such as access to capital. Capitalism is the root of a strong economy and society, and the perspective that women bring to business – either as owners, leaders,
10 SEPTEMBER 2020
or team members, contributes greatly to the overall success of a business. We tend to be more out-of-the-box in our thought processes, we have emotional creativity, and we introduce concepts for creation, operation, and diversity that enhance many business models in a unique and transformational way. While we struggle to access the same levels of respect, access to resources and we still live in a society that makes it challenging for a woman to balance work/life responsibilities, we have made great strides. We have earned our place at the board room table, and as long as women work to uplift and empower one another, there is really nothing we can’t achieve or challenge we can’t overcome. PGMAG: How important is visibility during this time? LM: You can’t buy what you don’t know about…you can’t patronize a business you can’t see. No matter how good you are at what you do, or how unique your service, if no one knows about you, then you are handicapping your own potential. PGMAG: Let’s not Survive but Thrive. Expound on this idea.
LM: The goal in life should never be to simply survive. Regardless of what curve balls life throws at us, there are always ways to restructure, regroup, recover, flourish, and prosper. To thrive in life, we must be resolute in our commitment, flexible enough to pivot when circumstances warrant, nurture our ability to make a decision, and the strength to remain resolute in the face of challenge. PGMAG: You are a much sought after speaker. What are the key areas you will be discussing in the near future? LM: Just as the events where I was scheduled to speak have changed during this unprecedented year, so too have the topics. While I remain committed to the “big picture” themes which are important to our long-term future, such as having a 2030 strategy and expanding to global markets, my immediate mandate is to make sure that small- and medium-sized businesses have the ideas and tools to help them navigate our present storm of uncertainty, finding gaps to allow them to move forward from a position of strength rather than fragility. There is a way forward for each and every business during this
PGMAG: What is your perspective on remote teams and the impact on ROI? Is remote the wave of the future? LM: We are never going to go back to “normal”. Period. With corporations and companies channeling millions of dollars into technology, connectivity, and cybersecurity, ensuring that employees can work from home, and with the uncertainty of how long we will have to be socially distanced, we need to face the fact that this will very likely be the preamble to the future of business. When employee KPIs remain high, overhead costs are low, and businesses see that they can do without large corporate footprints and subsidiary offices, we will never spend the money to put it all back the way it was before. In a matter of seconds, we can connect with team members around the globe. Board meetings can be conducted without the expense of travel. We can be together
if we choose, but through technology, we can be together while being apart. PGMAG: How important is it for you to be a role model, especially for young women? LM: Our greatest responsibility is to our youth, preparing them to step into this future equipped with the vision, tolerance, tenacity, and determination to achieve their dreams without giving a second thought to ‘possibility’. There is a quote that says, “we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our youth”, and it is our collective mandate to share our wisdom, knowledge, and expertise with you – especially young women, who often struggle with self-esteem and gender-based challenges. I challenge everyone…mentor one person – make difference in the life of just ONE person in your whole lifetime and you will have an ancillary impact on millions, as the difference you make to just that one person will impact their descents forever.

REVOLUTIONIZING THE ANTIQUATED SYSTEM OF EDUCATION PGMAG: Your mission is to spread the message of the importance of a holistic approach to educating children. What led you to this approach?

MH: I believe I’ve always had an unconventional view of the true purpose of school. I never thought the purpose was to receive high grades and regurgitate information. I didn’t like school as a child and believe many children are stuck in “purgatory” and endure thirteen years just and can’t wait to finally “get out”! Schools are notorious for standardization...creating a “sameness” of children as well as the ranking and sorting them. I never did that as a teacher and certainly push-back against that as a school superintendent. Over the years I learned that children flourish by creating the conditions for them to maximize their potential and discover their talents. A healthy mix of self-directed play, arts, physical education, academic subjects, and more creative endeavors will allow children to delve into a much needed “inner” and “outer” journey where in the end, they can self-actualize.

PGMAG: Share your background in education. MH: My background begins with my experiences as an elementary school teacher. I’ve been fortunate to teach at multiple grade levels. From there I was an elementary and middle school principal. Once I moved up to the District Office, I served students and staff members as an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. I’m now a Superintendent of Schools in my third school district. I also teach at Stony Brook University and Long Island University. PGMAG: As the Public School Superintendent of schools for the Port Washington School District, share your perspective on the COVID era of education. MH: We are in unprecedented times. All schools around the world had to pivot very quickly to remote instruction which is a very hard thing to do. There are so many things in and outside of education this pandemic has turned upside down. I’d like to think in the education space we have an opportunity to reimagine and rethink how we can serve students. The safety of our students and staff is our first order of business. Not far behind is the importance of
mental health for students and staff. We can really begin to address the whole child if we put our minds to it. PGMAG: You have focused on transforming schools by tapping into Potential Based Education, which focuses on the significance of social, emotional, physical and cognitive development for students as well as developing strategic plans for school buildings and school districts. Tell us about your initiatives. MH: In our schools, free play and recess has declined, and school and structured activities
have taken over most child and family lifestyles. It's hard to conceive that the 2017 Center for Disease Control report on "Strategies on Recess in Schools" identified only eight states that have policies requiring daily recess in schools. In fact, the "United Nations Standards of Human Rights" endorses that federal prisoners have at least an hour of outdoor exercise every day. If a prisoner in jail has this endorsement, why wouldn't we allow the same right to our children in our schools? I recommend one hour or more of recess and self-directed play every day. My previous school

district offered our children 40 minutes of recess and another 40 minutes for lunch. We also introduced yoga and mindfulness in grades K-8 and high school elective courses in both yoga and mindfulness. With the guidance of Peter Gray and Lenore Skenazy from the “Let Grow Project,” our school district has successfully instituted a "before school play club" at all seven of our elementary schools. Each Friday morning, students have the gift of mixed-age level and self-directed play opportunities for one full hour. Our school district has close to seven hundred elementary students beginning their day "playing" outside. The adults

are instructed to intervene only in an emergency. Teachers and principals have found the students who participate in our "Before School Play Club" to be less anxious and more on task when school begins. PGMAG: Your holistic approach to education is transforming education. Have you always thought “Out of the Box?” MH: I believe my experiences have led me to view the purpose of education in a different way. Now is the time for our school leaders to generate a new compelling philosophy of education and an innovative architecture for a

PGMAG: Why is your leadership needed more than ever? MH: Now is the time for our school leaders to generate a new compelling philosophy of education and an innovative architecture for a just and humane school system. We must refocus our energy on a foundation built on a sense of purpose, forging relationships, and maximizing the potential and talents of all children. Let’s take advantage of the possibility that our nation’s attention can shift 180 degrees, from obsessing over test scores and accountability to an entirely different paradigm of physical, mental, and emotional well-being for students and staff. It is our collective responsibility to foster engaging and meaningful environments when educating our children in
the new era of a post-pandemic education. As the great philosopher John Dewey stated over one hundred years ago, “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” The first sentence in the 2018 World Bank Group’s Flagship ReportLearning: To Realize Education’s Promise states, “Schooling is not the same as learning.” I couldn’t agree more. The report continues to speak about that as a society, we must learn to realize education’s promise. Now is this the time to revolutionize this antiquated system built on old structures and ideologies. PGMAG: Your trip to Finland changed your soul. Share your perspective. MH: As I traveled through Finland with my dear friend William Doyle (a NYT BestSelling Author), we met with top government officials, education professors, classroom teachers, and elementary-school students. We were stunned by what we observed: A society that selects and respects teachers like elite professionals; a worldclass network of vocational and technical schools; a school system that reveres and protects childhood

This is a philosophy of education I whole-heartedly believe in. PGMAG: Tell us about your new book, “Staying Grounded” 12 Principles for Transforming School Leader Effectiveness. MH: In my book, Staying Grounded, I frame out the importance of articulating one’s own philosophy of education, understanding your purpose, and understanding the importance of child and adolescent development. Our children and adults within our schools need you to be at your absolute best. An educator who is constantly working toward “Staying Grounded” will SEPTEMBER 2020

To the best of my ability, I try to see the school system and the school day through the eyes of our children. We are here to serve them and if that is outside the box...we have a lot of work to do.

be someone who is a strategic leader who leads within and amongst the levels of self, others, and the organization they serve. Leadership of self includes the responsibility of being self-aware and proactive in developing personal strengths. This is what the 12 Principles provides. I’ve heard that leadership is never about wielding one’s authority, it’s about empowering people. This book is meant to take that concept many steps further. For years my wife Erin has asked me when I would write a book about my views about the future of our education system and school leadership. The two are inextricably linked together. PGMAG: What is your philosophy in life? MH: Very simple. To serve others and leave the world a little bit better before you entered it. PGMAG: As an Educator, what has surprised you the most? MH: What has surprised me the most is our love affair with the ranking and sorting of students. We still love to test kids to death and overemphasize content areas

and not enough on creativity and divergent thinking opportunities. In too many ways, our education system hasn’t changed much since the 1950s. PGMAG: You are a much sought after TEDx and keynote speaker. What are your topics for the near future? MH: I have a real passion for our special needs children in our system. My daughter Sadie has Down Syndrome and I feel like we need better experiences and structures in place that allow all children to flourish. The same for our children who just arrive from another country and have to learn English in a new environment. A school is only as good as how they serve their most vulnerable populations. I have some virtual conferences planned this fall.
PGMAG: Where do we go from here? MH: I believe we have a lot to learn from COVID-19. We were forced to slow things down, become reacquainted with our families, and behave in a much different way. In many ways slowing down can be scary but it can really provide a lot of clarity. I believe in the next few years we will have many educators retire because of the massive changes taking place in very real-time. I believe when this is all said and done if we don’t take this opportunity to make real systemic changes to our education system...I’m not sure we ever will. “I Persist,” the biography of Patricia Smith, provides a first-hand perspective of her journey from abandonment in Spanish Town, Jamaica, to an outcast and homeless young woman in New York. Through years of hard work and perseverance, Patricia became the CEO of a multimillion dollar home healthcare company.
PGMAG: Freedom was your ultimate goal in your journey to wellness that surprisingly manifested into wealth. Share your backstory in this. PS: Emotional pain weighed heavily on me. At times, that crushing pain weakened every fiber of my being. I could hardly get out of bed at times. It is the worst kind of pain because, you can’t take a pill and get rid of it in the moment. You have to work with it. That arduous task of working assiduously under the cloud of depressive symptoms is no walk in the park. I describe my depression mainly at a high or medium intensity. It is rarely at a low intensity. Accordingly, I had to fight hard to find something that I could do to make a living and avoid becoming a bum. Though I had a postgraduate degree in nursing science, it did not serve me well because nursing work required that I show up at a time the job dictates. So, I had to explore different career options like Real Estate. Still, this did not

work because I had to wait too long to get paid. Ultimately, I went back to nursing and worked for an agency where I could put myself on call when I felt well enough to work. My ultimate goal was to feel free to work on my own time and pace. It was mostly in the spring and summer months when my energy surged. I worked like a horse as I don’t know how long the surge would last. When the fall and winter months came I was totally wiped out. It took a while to understand that pattern and cycle but I did. As William Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” I got Depression from where? I don’t know but I managed it in a way that eventually gave me financial freedom. PGMAG: Share your challenges and the lessons you learned from them. PS: I realize that I did not create myself or the challenges that

I learned that getting an education helped me realize an honest estimation of myself. My other big challenge was depression. I learned that everything worth having took tedious and private hours. So, while my counterparts were on frolic, I took time out to learn about depression. I learned that it is manageable if I really got to know myself, my pattern and cycle. Taking on too much to do can overwhelm and frustrate me quite quickly. Being a single mother, working and going to school was extremely hard. But I learn the strategy of pacing myself to decrease the burden. I also learned that the only thing that does work is hard work. Work that needs to get done because it is a stepping stone to getting what I truly desire, the freedom to enjoy the fruits that I am planting, cultivating, nurtured, watered, and tended to with love, care, and attention, every single day. I learned that doing the things that need to get done, regardless of whether I enjoy doing them or not was necessary to move in the direction of my dream and
reach my destination. I also learned that if I was going to get rid of my old identity, I had to drop the deprived and depraved story and boldly step towards my glory. Staying the same was not an option or I could die on the backward escalator. PGMAG: Where did you find refuge during these times?

PS: I found refuge in the quiet, stillness, and comfort of my bed. I didn’t think anyone cared and I was too embarrassed to tell my story. Though concentration was poor at times, I read to increase my knowledge and make me feel better about myself.

PGMAG: Your book, “I Persist” is your journey from homelessness to becoming the CEO of a multimillion-dollar home healthcare company. Share key points from your book. PS: The book was not written to make money because I already have money. The messages are more important
PGMAG: When you were homeless, what did you want to shout out to the world?. PS: I wanted to shout out “I have infinite possibilities and potential, please help me”. PGMAG: What does success look like to you? PS: For me, success is to be known all over the world as an ambassador, a change agent, and advocate for women who believe they are crippled by their past and cannot overcome challenges to succeed in their endeavors. Women who believe that their past challenges determine their destiny. Emily Dickinson,
an American poet once said, “If I can stop one heart from breaking I shall not live in vain.”If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain or help one fainting Robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain”
parents. A mother, a father or a guardian. Whether this person is biological, foster, or adoption it wouldn’t matter. A comforter to lean on when leaning became necessary to guide and direct me during child and early adulthood.
PGMAG: What is your advice for women entrepreneurs?

PS: Entrepreneurship is a maledominated space. My advice for women Entrepreneurs is, do not feel intimidated, disappointed, or surprised at insults and attempts to undermine your worth and intelligence. Some men have trouble accepting the adage that a woman’s place is outside the kitchen. Often the victimizer is not even conscious of his/her behavior because it has become a norm to view women as only having a place in the kitchen. If you can’t educate with the manifestation of your worth, then ignore the victimizer and get on with your business. PGMAG: If you could rewrite your story, what would it include? PS: Growing up feeling alone is an awful feeling. If I could rewrite my story, I would first equip myself with nurturing

than money. The message of overcoming low self-esteem, fear, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, helplessness, and parents leaving their children in search of a better life and having left their children without a life are more important than money. As Helen Keller once said, “character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved ”Fortunately, I am the mongoose that conquered the snake.

PETER A. BHEDA (PB) PGMAG: Thank you for granting us this interview. PB: It is my pleasure to be with you. PGMAG: Our research shows an exceptional leader, and a significant contributor in the 'Humanitarian' arena. Please share a brief of who you are and what you are about in the world. PB: Never give up. It is simple. It is an adage, but it is one I have lived by and one I have taught my children, and all the leaders I have helped develop in my career. We have infinite possibilities before us in life, our profession, our calling and our passions. I have learned to always

strive to be the best and find the resources and tools to help get there. My mountain is my profession, and I must climb it every day. I simply wanted to thrive and be the best I could. I started to climb the hospitality ladder, winning over recognition from my superiors and that motivated me to continue to be my best. I quickly found myself sharing my success tools with others: hard work, preparation, a keen sense of being open and creative to try new things. PGMAG: As an experienced leader, what are the five top keys to leading a successful team? PB: Dynamism. I keep strong, capable, excited
PGMAG: In this current global climate (COVID-19), what do you think leaders should be doing in order to promote diversity, equality and inclusion in the workplace? PB: I recently posted an article on LinkedIn that garnered over 40,000 likes, which may not be a lot for many leaders and entrepreneurs; but for me it was remarkablenot because it was me that
penned the message, but because it touched the heart of the line level employees who were struggling to survive the unprecedented times we live in. My message was to the CEO's and the large financial institutions and owners of the hotels, to please take care of their staff. I presented a formula hereby the stakeholders would set aside funds to address emergencies like COVID-19 so they will never be caught off guard and unprepared to help support their employees in times of need. No CEO called me, but I received thousands of messages from hotel housekeepers, a cook, and utility workers, bellmen, doormen, servers, customer service representatives and many other hourly staff to thank me for fighting for their welfare. That was quite gratifying. PGMAG: As a successful entrepreneur, what are the few key steps leaders could apply to aid business recovery in this challenged time? PB: I know that nothing is forever, including adversity. Our need to strive and to know and predict is inherent. I am not one to sit by and take the punches as they come. I
need to be the driving force of change and development. I am always there to support and encourage my team to do things right. That does not mean that I do not trust others, or I do not delegate; instead, I surround myself with excellent team members and associates. I have always felt the need to take on the heavy lifting so we can all enjoy when the day is done. I enjoy being a driving force and seeing results: good and bad. With good news, we continue, and we reap the reward and celebrate as a team. With the bad, we try again and try something different till we reach the desired result. Today, we have COVID-19 and it has turned us upside down. I am responsible for the success of my company, my employees, their ability pay bills and feed their families and pursue their own passions and interests. I want to be a catalyst for that. I speak to my staff once every other day via zoom and tell them how much I appreciate their commitment to serve, despite their hours being cut. I also speak to the furloughed staff to check up on them and see if they need any help in finding a new job or helping them update their CV's and in some cases preparing them for an interview. people on my team. I have taught leaders who have gone on to real estate, finance, human resources, revenue management, sales and marketing and operations. I have a knack for finding and retaining talent and as much as I enjoy learning, I enjoy giving to those in my professional care and thrive on seeing their successes and professional growth. I encourage my team to experience and find newness. Additionally, I keep abreast of industry trends, keeping a vast professional network, sharing ideas and concepts, yet holding to my favorites: hard work and preparedness. Our industry is ever evolving and keeping a mix of fresh approaches combined with tried and true core beliefs has given me win after win.

help others who do not have a voice is not limited to my own staff, but it encompasses the entire world. I sometime reflect on my own difficulties when I first came to this country with nothing in my pocket, yet I survived, through sheer determination and the will of God. PGMAG: What is your message for aspiring leaders? PB: An aspiring leader must conduct himself or herself to leave a positive impression with whom they may be working with, like a footprint in the sand. A leader must be constantly aware of how others experience him or her and should be mapped along seven dimensions: • Authenticity, the quality of being true to oneself. • Competence, the capacity to do the work of leadership and take his/her team where it needs to go. • Humility, acknowledging other's contribution and realizing your own areas of weakness and limitations. • Resolve, a steadfast and powerful commitment to see things through to the end of the process. • Warmth, likeability and caring about other as human beings and

individuals. • Elevation, and setting high expectations to energize others and finally… • Faith, creating a sense of possibility and confidence in what can be achieved. PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? PB: Hamlet, Gone with the Wind and Pride & Prejudice. All these books read over a period of the last 10 years has had a profound impact on how I view the family dynamics, the close family ties and its implications. While these books were quite interesting to read, some of the content appeared to out of touch from the reality of today's environment. I think my best teacher and guide and what truly changed my life was the superb guidance I received from my father. My Dad has always been my inspiration and while he did not even complete his high school, he was a man of immense moral character with the highest of integrity. Though he left this world a little over three years ago, the profound, heart piercing, gut punching impact Mr. Bheda had on my personal and professional life has been very powerful. It was the loss of a great man I had admired,

His compassionate nature and his ability to win over anyone regardless of the age or gender was remarkable. He taught me to be humble, never to give up, never to lie, never to cheat or take advantage of people who are weak and cannot defend themselves. He instilled in me the positive energy to never let my age determine the will and determination to achieve greater things. He died at the age of 86 peacefully at home with his children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren by his side all who had come to witness his graceful death, as he admonished every one of us to be kind and take good care of each other. He truly is my aspiration. My journey has taught me that not all life experiences can be presented in a form of a framed degree that one can place in an office or home. The hard lessons I have learned throughout my career, and the

My mountain is my profession, and I must climb it everyday. amazing people I have met over the last four decades, became a reward in and of itself. Given the option, I would not change any of my experiences, both positive and negative, because they helped shape me into the person I am today. I feel I reflect how my father would want me to be. I also feel a sense of gratitude knowing that his soul may be content, knowing that I have not wavered in my commitment to uphold his legacy. PGMAG: How would you describe your style of leadership? PB: I recently learned through my Harvard Leadership Certification, that a true leader is approachable and must have credibility. I think credibility is not only on the technical side of the equation, but it encompasses humility and resolve which together conveys know-how and authority. I also feel that an effective leader must be trusted and be a “student of solution rather than a master of problems. It is that
drive to improve my leadership skills, and after 30 years in the c-suite, I am an adjunct Professor at Boston University while getting my master's degree at the same institution. It is an incredible opportunity, and I cannot wait to engage in a classroom environment with other cohorts from around the world. PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self?
PB: Be prepared and always expect the unexpected. I recently interviewed someone for a key position within my organization and during the discussion, he revealed that in the course of his work, he had seen it all. I was not impressed with that statement as I do not subscribe to that point of view. There is no way any one of us has seen it all. shift everything we do. My advice is to prepare yourself. There is so much out there that one choosing to follow similar path will see and do, and it will shape one as an individual, as a professional. Be open to receive that, and then share it with those coming behind you. PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? PB: I would not change a thing! I would still collect trash and remember earning $2.25 per hour in 1972, work long hours, shed tears, live through turbulent times yet succeed at every project I embraced. I now know that everything I went through was a life lesson and these lessons are now the core values stemming from those difficult moments. PGMAG: What makes you laugh? PB: Children make me laugh, life makes me laugh, animals make me laugh. and something I laugh at myself for acting like a child when I am with them. PGMAG: Judith, welcome to today's interview. LNJ: Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself and tell about my artistic path. PGMAG: Please tell us who you are and what you are about in the world. LNJ: We all have more than one role to play in this life on Earth. Me too. Of course, all of these roles build your own personality - and to get a more complete picture of who we are, they should be put together as mosaic pieces. I can identify very strongly and happily with the mother role (they call me MAMAger: D), with
the role of spouse, with the role of painter (who aims to create unique portraits of wines), with the role of friend, but for example my role as a daughter is unfortunately very unbalanced. This variety of inputs makes us so very unique. In the end, life is our private "one-man show" of individuality, a colourful palette that we offer the world to make it even more diverse. The African Women's Health Project International was born out of a passion and spiritual calling that gently kept pulling at my heartstrings. Today, it is active in eight major American cities and ground works is underway for the launching of a major health-care initiative and medical care facility in 2022. Founded in 1999 and incorporated in 2003, the mission seeks to improve health care thus the quality of life for women and children in African countries. In Africa, where homeland resources fall short, my fervent hope is to fill the

I run international offices in Nigeria and Ghana that organize free medical clinics, and distribute medicines, medical equipment, and supplies to women and children in impoverished areas around the world. You have women over in various communities in Africa who have had 10 children, yet they don’t know what a pelvic examination is all about. They’ve never had a pap smear. I found this to need sense of urgency. Seeing the conditions of things and going back into the townships, I knew I had to do something! I saw that access to adequate health care is out of reach of many African families, particularly women and children whose needs are greatest, because of the cost just to see a doctor and the scarcity of health care facilities and physicians. The consequences are a high infant mortality rate, prevalent diseases in some areas, and a high incidence of preventable deaths, and with the scarcity of food and proper nutrition, this compounded the problem. A businesswoman and Public Information Specialist, the princess has cut an impressive niche in the promotion of the culture and customs of Africa. Right after graduating from

She immediately established the DE African Elegance Fashion Production, and soon followed it with her first retail store location that catered to African fashions for the entire family. Not long after this, she would make an impressive entry into the wedding attire and wedding planning industry. A fashion designer by trade, she is the wedding coordinator and director of Bridal Blessings, a complete wedding boutique in
Arkansas, that offers wedding attire and planning services that are totally African, traditional, and custom-designed. African clothing, accessories, and keepsakes are also among her offerings. Having being brought to America as a teenager by her father, Prince Richard Ogunlana, back to her homeland when saw economic and living conditions that had changed drastically and certainly not for the better. "A lot of my motivation was an experience that I had back in 1997 when my grandmother passed away,” she shares. “I saw a lot of people living in what we in America would call poverty.” She says she was particularly moved by a nine year-old boy who was trying to get the scraps of food leftover from the picnic her family was having on the beach. When she finally met the family, the mother had six other children with her while a one-year old was feeding off one of her breasts, while the other breast was green, gangrenous and obviously cancerous. The glaring lack of medical care was a sobering experience for the princess. “I knew I had to do something,” Upon returning back to the United States, she immediately began

connecting with the medical community. Her brother, Dr. Babajide Ogunlana, a podiatric surgeon in Houston, Texas, serves on the board as the Medical Director, in addition to Dr. Olabode Olumofin, an internal medicine physician. "Over here, we know that early detection of any disease is crucial to keep the disease from turning into something worse. Untreated and undetected health problems eventually lead to death,” she notes. Each Spring, AWHPI embarks on a 12-day Medical Mission to Africa, and the reason why the princess is consistent with this engagement is the parlous state of Medicare in those regions, as evidenced by how women agonize in labor on stained, makeshift beds, the ill and premature babies lying in rickety, paint-chipped cribs and decrepit incubator, the steady and arduous work of ill-equipped doctors and nurses through the night, doing all within their power for each what they can for each patient, the painful, but careful rationing of medications and dressings so that they can do the most for the most, and the avoidable cancellations of surgeries due to a lack of consumables as fundamental as sutures. PGMAG: You were recently inducted at the UCAT in United Nations as an Ambassador of culture uniting USA, China and Africa. Please tell us a little bit about what this role entails.
“You are more than good enough for all that you desire!” So many people struggle with that feeling of not being good enough, and it affects us on a subconscious level in both our personal and professional lives.
HPDMO: In 2014, I convened the 2014 New York International Elite Global Councilwoman Summit: Forum on Economy, Culture and Health as a side event of the UN General Assembly at the United Nations. This event also incorporated the Official Launch of the Global Council Of Women For Development (GCWD) and the Signing Ceremony of the Sino-African Economic and Cultural Cooperation Forum, where I assumed the position as President. GCWD is the international forum for the comprehensive evaluation of the socio-economic, political and intellectual development of women in the new millennium. It is conceptualized to provide a neutral pedestal for a global collaboration of governments, organizations and businesses for the continued well-being,
social emancipation and economic empowerment of women worldwide, utilizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 as veritable guideline. It was at this event when I was inducted as the United Nations Ambassador of Culture, uniting the USA, China and Africa through the instrumentality of promoting Culture, and Development of Health/ Wellness programs among the women of the World; and by promoting Peace Building. In fact, I just finished my 10 year term as a Commissioner after I was appointed a Commissioner by the Mayor of Little Rock, and the Board of Directors of Little Rock Sister Cities Commission, serving two terms as the ViceChair/Commissioner on the Commission's Board. I was
also a former Ambassador of the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce, my group was accorded significant responsibility as Official Host of the Chamber’s Annual Meeting during President Bill Clinton’s first official visit to Arkansas during his first term as President of the United States. HPDMO: Being empowered means there's no greater accomplishment than thriving in the things you love. I think women should do less of competition and more or collaboration. This becomes all the more significant especially because the Global Summit on Women Empowerment, of which I was the Official Convener in my capacity as Chairman of The Global Summit Group, only recently held at the United Nations, and impacted a major change that is now bringing two powerful organization: The Global Summit Group and International Women Think Tank organizations to launch the Women United for Global Change in the southern part of the United States even amid this global pandemic crisis. More importantly, I come from a background of very strong, powerful, assertive and phenomenal women. Women, who have defied the gender dynamics for centuries and led with heart and passion. Phenomenal women as my mother, my grandmother and other women in my family background taught me that a woman has the power to lead and to shape the world. Women from my background thrive on high emotional intelligence with a strong sense of community. They strongly identify their connections to the community in all their

These powerful women taught me to act with generosity and nobility towards those less privileged. And it is this belief that has kept me lifted as well as grounded. PGMAG: How do you create work/life balance amidst your busy schedules? HPDMO: Frankly, mine has been such a busy life that I hardly know where to start. However, to introduce sane brevity into a tortuous career, I have derived tremendous fulfillment from building cultural bridges across the continents of the world. However, creating a balance between work and life comes naturally as I am blessed to work in a position that I love, and which allows me the freedom to work remotely
while being with my family even as I travel all over the world. PGMAG: What is your message for world leaders? HPDMO: My message for world leaders is the need to anchor the point that for true impactful changes to occur, there needs to be a concise efforts by all to work together collectively to bring about inclusion of women in the decision making at every level. I believe women are wise and comprehend many sides of complicated issues, and create novel and innovative solutions to problems. As leaders, we are continuously working for the good of the whole group, not just for personal power or glory while inspiring others by understanding their perspectives, capitalizing on their strengths, and overcoming their weaknesses. And we persist until a job was done, even if it meant personal sacrifice. Women lead with wisdom, integrity, and inspirational power every day, in their families, their workplaces, and their communities. They often aren’t recognized for this leadership, because they don’t wave their arms and ask for recognition. Instead, they simply harness
PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? HPDMO: In the book, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Mary Mason narrates a particularly uplifting story that was sent to her during a very depressing period of her life. It had to do with a donkey that fell into a well and the owner couldn’t figure out what to do to save him. So, he concluded that since the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. The man invited a few of his friends to come over and help him dig the well. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into it. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s friends continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step

PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self? HPDMO: No one goes through life without fumbling at one thing or the other. But the secret of those who’re excelling in life is that they have learnt to let their past stay dead. Indeed, as Hilary Clinton, once said, “Life is too short, time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been.” Make peace with yourself because of your own sake; for the sake of your physical well-being and sanity. To be at peace with oneself is to be well, and the poor who is at peace with herself is better than the rich who has no peace. Realize that you cannot afford to be too proud to make peace, for then the pride would ruin you. Realize that you cannot be too bitter to see that there is a chance to make peace and let go of negative circumstances and people (for there will always be such), otherwise the bitterness would eat you up till you are a mere bag of bones. Make peace with yourself—be your own peacemaker. Let go of all negative things and people. Then lastly, I believe everyone should challenge their limits. You can never know your full capabilities until you

challenge your limits. So, begin from today. Ignore limiting thoughts from within yourself, as well as the negative opinions of others around you. Reach out to greater heights. What do you think has changed since you began your journey in this arena? GI: Alot has changed in the world generally, likewise in the Tourism space globally and this certainly has necessitated a great deal of change in how we live and do Tourism. Tourism essentially involves movement of people from one place to another
be it local or International Travels for business and/or pleasure and often involves a participation in varied activities including staying in hotels or accommodation facilities of choice, tourist entertainment, tours and Attractions, events, festivals and more. While the above typically involves free association and social networking with people, the world of today is rewriting that script (howbeit temporarily). The change we see today has brought about a rapid Digital/Virtual evolution in the Tourism space. Alot of Tourism businesses today
are restructuring and taking advantage of the Digital waves and NovaRosta is one of such players currently working behind the scenes to become more global by riding on the waves of today's Digital revolution. We have quite a bit going on behind the scenes and in due course and in a very short while from now, we will be reintroducing NovaRosta hopefully to the readers of Pgmag and the world at large. So yes, alot has changed and I would say it's for the best; depending on how you choose to look at it.

PGMAG: In the current global health challenge (Covid-19), what are some of the steps you think could be taken by businesses - especially in your industry, to create a safer environment for people who love to travel? GI: Aviation, Travel and Tourism are among some of the most hit business sectors by the COVID19 pandemic world over; but the beautiful thing about Tourism is that it never dies and has stood the test of time over and over again. I say this to reiterate with confidence the fact that Tourism will thrive again and we certainly will go back to being profitable and sustainable sooner than we hope and pray for...but in the meantime, I would recommend that as the world slowly opens up again for travel, businesses and travellers should not imagine that life has suddenly returned to normal...NOT YET; so we must continue to adhere strictly to the safety guidelines and travel procedures provided by the health authorities both for local and international Travels.

PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? GI: What would I do differently? Hmmmm...To be honest I'm not sure there's anything I wish I could have done differently. This is also not to say I have the perfect life...far from it. Infact I pray for people who wish to be me and my prayer usually is that God should not allow them experience a tenth of what I have experienced on my journey so far to
becoming me because it could kill them; to bring my message home, I would change nothing regardless because a subtraction from my experiences would be taking away a great deal of value that I have received as a result of those experiences. My experiences have shaped me and are continuously moulding me into who I am today and becoming. And while I continue to strive to be better, I consider my journey very unique and I most certainly cherish my process...including my very many mistakes, challenges, shortcomings (and trust me I have ALOT of these), successes, triumphs and everything that makes me Geraldine Itoe. I embrace all of it because it has and is equipping me with the essential tools and skills required for my assignment here on earth. The only thing I wish for is to live a purposeful life and to meaningful impact as many people tied to my journey through my acts, deeds and service to them and humanity at large. This ultimately would make me a very fulfilled and happy being.

PGMAG: You are a man with great knowledge on Aviation industry. Please tell us more about your entry in this line of business. Was it a Chance or a Choice! IS: I believe that there is nothing by chance. I

am an ardent fan of Richard Bach, the famous author and philosopher. In his book ‘Nothing by Chance” he amply demonstrates that nothing in this world happens by chance! My fascination for airports and airlines started in my formative years when I travelled all over with my parents, my dear Dad serving as a Legal Advisor to several countries. It grew with time and my passion for the airtransport industry, as a career was reinforced during my study of Aviation Management at University of Berkeley, California; soon my engineering course, coincidentally airports being my final year treatise, followed by and an advanced Management Course at ‘Henley – the
PGMAG: What do you consider as your landmark employments & opportunities that led to your achievements in your major field of specialization. IS: I have had the pleasure of serving with some renowned Airports Authorities, global aviation conglomerates, and most significantly my stint as the CEO of a major International airport – the 16th busiest in the world and ranked world’s #1 in facilitation by Airports Council international (ACI) in 70 million passengers per annum (MPPA) category, and my several assignments with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) - a specialized agency in the United Nations (UN) system of organizations, headquartered in Montreal, Canada. It regulates the civil aviation activities around the world. I have had the privilege of serving under the aegis of ICAO in several countries in varying socioeconomic environments.
PGMAG: As a global influencer, how would you describe your style of leadership? IS: I rate integrity, determination, empathy and courage as the uppermost traits in any walk of life. These traits earn the respect, affection, concern and dedication of the team in any ‘Service’ one is engaged in and more so in a highly visible and sensitive industry like air-transport which is more often than not prone to incidents and accidents and where teamwork only can save crisis turning into a disaster. PGMAG: Can you single out an incident that you may have experienced where your leadership traits and qualities came instantaneously to the fore in your very demanding job as a CEO of IGI Airport, New Delhi, IS: Sure. I was heading for the airport driven by an air force corporal when I overheard an alert from my fire chief on the RT about a B-747 with 271 passengers in its final approach to land emitting smoke from one of the engines. I instantly glanced up in the air and noticed the smoke and in addition, a spark on the rear side of the engine, not visible to the air traffic control tower
or the fire station. Knowing that the flight may catch fire while rolling on the runway, I immediately intervened, as I am authorized to, and instantly informed and simultaneously gave a command to combat fire, in one particular manner amongst several options; call it my expertise, experience, training, instinct, presence of mind, sixth sense or all put together. The instant response from the chief fire officer was Wilco (an acronym for "Will Comply”). No discussions on fire-fighting options, no arguments, no contradictions, and that clinched the deal. As is known, if the aircraft fire is not extinguished in two minutes, there is no need to reach out, as nothing remains to be saved. The daring corporal drove on the runway under the burning wing, until the aircraft came to a shrieking halt, and so did my car surround by fire-fighting vehicles, ambulances and the brave fire fighters, doctors, security personnel and the works. During the drive under the burning aircraft wing, in between the eerie silence, I heard fire fighters - Chief under the burning aircraft, let us move fast; perhaps motivation at its best and concern for their colleague. All the 271 passengers and crew came out unscathed

PGMAG: Incredible! And what was your reward? IS: My reward? I learnt an alltime lesson on the ‘Art of Crisis Management”, received respect from my team, professional recognition by the highest echelons of the government, and a citation from the highly regarded Rotary International Foundation reading “International Vocational Services Award for Leading from the Front and Outstanding Devotion to Duty”. What more could I possibly ask for! PGMAG: You have had an incredible journey, and we know that so many people across the globe will be inspired by your story. We have been chatting on your articles published in some renowned aviation journals and I very happily commenting on them. Please share a bit about your own self. Tell us as to where do you belong? IS: “I belong to the World!”

A renowned author wrote a piece on me, without any prior intimation and in an informal discussion, for the Profile column of a magazine called Flair, on my first-time assignment to the UN titled “Inderjit – World is his Oyster”. I loved it and pledged to myself to do better and better.

POWERFUL GLOBAL WOMEN FOUNDATION COVID-19 PROJECTS As part of PGWF mission to support more families during this challenged time, we have been able to hold two projects (one in April and the other on 13th July 2020). We distributed food supplies to several families and orphanage homes. Our team lead by Mrs Josephine Itsuokor (Vice-president of PGWF) made these projects a success. Powerful Global Women Foundation (Powerhouse Charity) was founded in 20l6 in Nigeria, West Africa, by Lady Anita Duckworth-Bradshaw. The core objective of this organization is to transform the lives of women and children, through various projects centred around the need of the service group. In 20l6 Lady Anita single handedly fed over 400 children as part of “project feed l000 children globally”, and held an empowerment conference for the women. Through this project, so many women have gone to do great things with the knowledge they gained from the event. She recently held a life transforming event for women in Lagos, Nigeria as part of International women’s month celebration 20l8. The turnout was very encouraging. She is working towards supporting more families to keep their children and wards in school through” project back-to-school” starting in September 20l8.
