kicking our neighbors out of their homes! But we don’t need their quick fixes if we come together and build longterm solutions ourselves. We don’t need toxic chemicals and waste contaminating our bodies and the land we live on, we need health clinics that really serve the people! We don’t need dead-end jobs in dangerous industries, we need quality education and well-paid jobs that contribute to the sustainable future and development of our communities! We don’t need Gentrification, we demand Popular Control of our parks, playgrounds and green spaces!
Cuando el gobierno arroja desechos tóxicos y basura a nuestras comunidades, nos envían un mensaje claro que quieren que nos sintamos como basura. Cuando las empresas arrojan productos químicos peligrosos a nuestros vecindarios, nos están diciendo que no les importa si nos enfermamos y morimos siempre que puedan obtener ganancias. Mientras tanto, las tragedias prevenibles como lo que sucedió en Flint, Nueva Orleans, Puerto Rico y aqui con el Huracán Sandy nos proporcionan terribles ejemplos de cómo el gobierno estadounidense respondería a un desastre natural en nuestras comunidades. Y ahora, a través del proceso de reurbanización, hábiles desarrolladores de bienes raíces y políticos están llegando con soluciones de curita para embellecer nuestros vecindarios, mientras que patean a nuestros vecinos fuera de sus hogares!

Hunts Point every day, while the city dumps 40% of all of its waste in our neighborhoods. It’s the reason Hunts Point has more prisons than public parks.
Ever wonder why Bronx air is so polluted that asthma is choking our babies? Ever wonder why we have more toxic waste than green parks for our children to play in safely? Ever wonder why our neighborhoods are torn apart by highways and industries that exploit our communities instead of giving back to the people?
When the government dumps toxic waste and garbage into our communities, they’re sending us a clear message they want us to feel like trash. When companies spew dangerous chemicals into our neighborhoods, they’re telling us that they don’t care if we get sick and die as long as they can make a profit. Meanwhile preventable tragedies like what happened in Flint, New Orleans, Puerto Rico and here during Hurricane Sandy provide us horrifying examples of how the US Government would respond to a natural disaster in our communities. And now on top of everything, slick real estate developers and their politicians cronies are coming in with band-aid solutions to beautify our neighborhoods, while
None of this is an accident, it’s part of a racist agenda carried out by city planning to benefit rich companies at the expense of poor and working class people of color, our communities and the natural world. It’s called Environmental Racism and it’ the reason why folks in the South Bronx suffer from the highest asthma rates in the country, with fumes from 15,000 commercial trucks polluting 2
¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado por qué el aire del Bronx está tan contaminado que apenas podemos respirar y el asma está ahogando a nuestros bebés? ¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado por qué tenemos más residuos tóxicos que parques verdes donde nuestros niños puedan jugar con seguridad? ¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado por qué nuestros vecindarios están destrozados por carreteras e industrias que explotan nuestras comunidades en vez de ayudar a la gente?
Pero no necesitamos que vengan con propuestas que nos perjudiquen, mejor es reunirnos y crear nuestras propias soluciones. ¡No necesitamos químicos tóxicos y desechos que contaminen a nuestros cuerpos y la tierra en la que vivimos, necesitamos clínicas de salud que realmente sirvan a la gente! ¡No necesitamos empleos sin salida en industrias peligrosas, necesitamos Educación de calidad y empleos bien pagados que contribuyan al futuro sostenible y al desarrollo de nuestras comunidades! ¡ no necesitamos la Reurbanización, exigimos el Control Popular de nuestros parques, patios y espacios verdes!
Nada de esto es un accidente, es parte de una agenda racista llevada a cabo por la alcaldía para beneficiar a las empresas ricas y perjudicar a las personas pobres y trabajadoras, especialmente las comunidades negras y latinas. Este proceso se llama Racismo Ambiental y es la razón por la cual la gente en el sur del Bronx sufren las tasas más altas de asma en el país, con los humos de 15.000 3
