The success of a child depends on many here at the children’s home. Behind every good student, there stood a tutor who sparked his or her imagination and intellect. Every athlete had a house parent washing his or her uniform. Every alumni learned to work in a team environment and the value of responsibility, which has served them well throughout their lives. Most of all, every child of the children’s home has benefited from the generosity of donors and friends. Your kindness was particularly important this holiday season. Every child deserves a special Christmas, and because of you, we were able to enjoy festivities and purchase a few gifts for each child. For that, we are extremely grateful. If you think the children’s home is ideal for a child you know, please contact me or visit MasonicChildrensHome.org.
FINDING STABILITY Resilient. If Daniel Bert had to describe himself in one word, that would be it. By the age of 7, he moved seven times. He was always being shuffled between his mom’s house, his dad’s house and foster homes, rarely living a stable life. The Bert siblings, two boys and two girls, were split up when they left home for foster care. The boys lived in one foster home, while the girls lived in another. Daniel can count on his fingers the number of times he saw his sisters during that time. Less than a year later, the girls “got lucky” and moved in with grandparents, who had room only for two.
“I learned to open up more. My house parents and teachers taught me how to take a step back and relax,” Daniel said. “I think that’s honestly what helped me overcome the challenges I’ve had.”
He’s also learned the more work you put into something, the better the results will be. “I used to be so unmotivated. If I continued in the direction I was headed, bad things would have happened,” he recalls. “If I ran into my old self, I would refuse to even know him.”
HOME’S GROWN KIDS
Daniel had always been a strong student with natural talents, but finding new friends and meeting new teachers wasn’t easy. He became shy and even developed a speech impediment, but one year later, he seemed to be a new person.
SPRING 2017
In 2009, about to start 4th grade, Daniel moved one last time to the children’s home and was enrolled in a new school. His siblings were soon to follow.
3
Daniel is currently working at a car lot where he washes and parks cars in hopes of saving enough money to buy his own one day. Cars will always be his first love, and he’s always curious to discover the purpose of each part. Daniel also spends his time on the high school rifle team, playing video games and studying in the resource center at the children’s home. There, he has been working hard to improve his writing skills. In 2018, the distinguished honor roll student will graduate high school and is looking forward to studying mechanical engineering in college, but refuses “to work with anything but cars.” He’s counting on his pre-existing study habits and his natural talent for math and science to get him through the rigorous college program. Thanks to donors and friends, Daniel will graduate from college in 2022 debt-free.
HOME’S GROWN KIDS
SPRING 2017
Daniel is many things: a friend, brother and a student, but one thing he’s never been is a quitter. To children experiencing hard times, Daniel has a few words of advice:
4
“Always keep your head up and be positive. Stay connected with someone and add humor to life, because sometimes that’s all you have.” In 10 years, Daniel sees himself married, working a good job and having a family of his own. He envisions himself working hard for what he started life without. Behind his thick-rimmed glasses and cheeky grin, there is the power of resilience inside Daniel. “Now, I let very little bring me down. My life has turned around, there’s no questioning that.”

Team practice in Puerto Rico
TRACK AND FIELD STAR VENTURES TO PUERTO RICO 100% That’s how much effort it takes Arthur Quaye to lunge his body across a pit of sand and land feet-first. His sport fights against gravity and the odds, much like he has. A Philadelphia native, Arthur’s youngest memories include struggling in the school system and worse at home. Under a recommendation from a Masonic Children’s Home alumnus and teacher, Arthur moved to the children’s home in 2009. Since then, when a defining moment in the young man’s life requires his all, he gives his all (and then some). In January, thanks to a donor, Arthur, a Bloomsburg University student, visited Puerto Rico with the university’s track and field team to train outside of Pennsylvania’s frigid weather. Besides practice, he and his teammates spent the week of a lifetime snorkeling, cave dwelling and exploring the rain forests.
How Good Is Arthur Quaye?
Throughout his expansive training and recognition, Arthur remains a gracious athlete who just enjoys his sport. Children’s home staff always knew Arthur was something special and worked hard to help him find the perfect school, one that had a strong balance between athletics and education. Although he prefers athletics, Arthur has been working hard academically and is looking forward to graduating with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. “We had daily study sessions growing up [at the children’s home], and I used to complain about being tired from practice, but it only prepared me for life as a student athlete,” Arthur recalls. “Masonic instilled in me that academics always come first.” Only time will tell if Arthur has the opportunity to continue his track and field journey after graduation, but donors and friends at the children’s home will be rooting for him all the way.
HOME’S GROWN KIDS
SPRING 2017
It seems every time there’s an answer to that question, the 2014 Masonic Children’s Home alumnus breaks another record. In high school, he broke Elizabethtown Area School District’s standing long jump record by one inch, jumping 21 feet 9 inches, and during his freshman year at Bloomsburg, he beat his personal record with a leap of 22 feet 4.9 inches. During his 2016 season, the college junior took 4th in the long jump at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor session and won the championship at the PSAC outdoor session. He was the first male long jump champion for Bloomsburg in 51 years, which he claims was a “pretty cool feeling.” Hiking through the rain forest

HAPPENINGS
Campus Campfire Friends from across the Masonic Village campus gathered together for a campfire, enjoying live entertainment, freshly grilled hot dogs and fun. Youth helped out by prepping hot dogs, serving drinks and assisting Masonic Health Care Center residents. A few even provided entertainment for the crowd with hula hoops and tambourines.

Happy Holidays
8
The kids enjoyed many holiday festivities this year including the annual Jerusalem Lodge No. 506, Philadelphia, Christmas Party, where they got to meet Santa; a party hosted by Philadelphia Lodge No. 9; and a Christmas church service.
Massing Of The Colors The Massing of the Colors flag display is proudly held on the Masonic Village campus each Veterans Day. This year, youth helped place more than 7,000 flags in honor of each soldier who has died in combat since 9/11.
The Surprise Of A Lifetime Thanks to a generous donor, the Masonic Children’s Home got a huge Christmas surprise. The youth and staff will be visiting Walt Disney World in June! The once in a lifetime trip will include visits to all the parks - MGM Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.

February 9 dumped a blanket of snow on Lancaster County, bringing area school districts to a close. All it brought to the children’s home was a good time! The kids spent their afternoon making hand-crafted Valentines, sledding and warming up with hot chocolate.
