Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

Johannes Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1

Unsuk Chin: subito con forza [Pittsburgh premiere]

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances

Sunday, April 2

1:30 p.m.

Your ticket

In Rachmaninoff’s final composition, we hear a culmination of his multifaceted career in the thoughtful, sometimes mournful, Symphonic Dances. The rhythmic melodies point to his Russian background, while the Dies Irae theme (a type of ancient apocalyptic chant) hints at a potentially darker ending.

Also on the program, hear Francesco Piemontesi perform Brahms’ “First Piano Concerto,” partially written as a portrait of Clara Schumann, alongside Unsuk Chin’s quotation of Beethoven in her forcefully brilliant work. For tickets, call James Guzman at 412-392-8801.

Phipps Conservatory Spring

Flower Show: Five Senses of Splendor

Wednesday, April 5 1 p.m.

$15

Delight at tens of thousands of spring blooms, including signature lilies, amaryllis, petunias and more. Breathe in the fragrant springtime flowers as they bloom alongside an oversized perfume bottle in Palm Court. Hear beautiful sounds in the Sunken Garden as you stroll among the colorful chime canopies. Watch a serene stream bubble beneath a red footbridge in the Japanese-style inspired South Conservatory. Listen to the essential springtime sound of birds chirping peacefully atop ornate bird houses. Bring Karen Hammond $15 by March 31 to reserve your ticket.

$18

Inspired by the Academy Award-winning 1951 film starring Gene Kelly, this classic golden age musical will sweep you off your feet. The streets of Paris are teeming with romance and possibility as an American GI has a chance encounter with a beautiful French girl. With a score by the indelible George Gershwin, stunning choreography and a set that will transport you to the streets of Paris, “Who could ask for anything more?” Bring Karen $18 by April 21 to reserve your ticket.
