The Masonic Village workshop is a non-profit club giving MVS residents the opportunity to use a space for woodworking, crafting and minor repairs. There is a wide variety of hand and power tools available for use. There is a separate “finishing room” for painting and varnishing. Also, there are enough workstations located in the shop for several people to work at the same time. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there.

Todd continues his series on “World War II on the Homefront” with a discussion of the critical shortages that endangered the war effort, especially the shortage of rubber. Come hear how the U.S. solved this problem, and what shortages meant to those on the Homefront who had to get used to a new reality: rationing. By the end of 1942, gasoline, sugar and coffee were all rationed, and that was only the beginning.

Marian Rejewski and Breaking the Enigma Code You may have seen the PBS show, “The Bletchley Circle,” about the women helping to break the German code. Here,
we learn about Polish mathematicians who developed a prototype Enigma machine and broke much of the code years before the English. Tommy Hitchcock and the P-51 Mustang He was deemed unacceptable to be a fighter in the Army Air Force but was recruited to support the British Royal Air Force. There, he worked on the P-51 fighter that became one of the war’s most important weapons.

General Slim and the Forgotten Fight There were many leaders who were overshadowed by others and other events. Here, we learn about British General Slim and the victory in the China-Burma campaign against great odds. A Nuremberg Interpreter and a Tokyo Judge World War II was not over with the last bullet or the signing of surrenders and treaties. There were still the trials of those who had committed war crimes. Here, we see those trials through the eyes of an interrupter and the Tokyo Tribunal.

The Nationality Rooms were designed to represent and celebrate the cultures of various ethnic groups who settled in Allegheny County. The 31 Nationality Rooms located on the first and third floors of the Cathedral of Learning are a community space where visitors are invited to experience the rich heritage of the communities who inspired and supported their creation. The Nationality Rooms are also used as university classrooms, giving students the opportunity to engage in learning in a unique setting that helps them explore the historic diversity of the Pittsburgh region. Also, guest conductor Lorenzo Viotti makes his Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra debut in roaring showpieces by Verdi, Ravel and Richard Strauss.
Tour of The Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology Wednesday, Jan. 19 12:15 p.m. No Cost
The Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology has its roots in a program of archaeological field work in the Near East that began in 1924 focusing on the Lands of the Bible: modern day Israel, West Bank and Jordan. Its exhibits highlight daily life in ancient times, including landscape and settlement patterns; domestic and communal architecture; agriculture and food preparation; technologies, crafts and stylistic traditions; trade; religious observance; and memory and writing systems and practice. The museum is part of a multifaceted archaeology program that includes an ongoing excavation at Tel Zayit in Israel, as well as academic courses and a lecture program that brings leading archaeologists to Pittsburgh.
