Tai Chi

If you are looking for a new exercise routine, the wellness center will be holding an eight-week Tai Chi series. Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy, improved flexibility and improved balance.

The Masonic Village workshop is a non-profit club giving Masonic Village residents the opportunity to use a space for woodworking, crafting and minor repairs. There is a wide variety of hand and power tools available for use. Also, there is a separate “finishing room” for painting and varnishing. There are enough workstations located in the shop for several people to work at the same time. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there!

Todd DePastino: Origins of the Cold War, Part 2 Tuesday, May 17 7 p.m. Assembly Room
Todd DePastino continues his look at the Cold War’s beginning in the immediate post-WWII period by focusing on the many crimes and frightening personality of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Todd will also discuss Stalin’s remarkable counterpart, Harry Truman, a plainspoken “common man” from Missouri who possessed an uncommon genius for politics and proved a much more formidable opponent than Stalin ever imagined. Come hear about Truman’s haberdashery, his WWII record and the important “Long Telegram” that refocused our foreign policy on one goal: “Containment.”

Lifelong Learning Programs begin at 4 p.m. on Mondays in the Assembly Room. In May, Lifelong Learning and Ken Burns take us on the journey in search of the Northwest Passage with Lewis and Clark. The most notable expedition in U.S. history was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, with soldiers, an African American slave, a female guide and a Canadian boatmen. Ken Burns re-creates their 1803 journey to locate the Northwest Passage. The explorers found a varied landscape and a dizzying diversity of Indian peoples. Bring a friend!

Art Classes Back by Popular Demand: Pastel Techniques Tuesday, May 3 1 – 3 p.m. FREE

Learn the difference between various strengths of pastels, strokes used in painting/drawing in pastels, basic set up, picking your color palette and suggested techniques for successful results. You will complete three paintings in three weeks: a “Walk in the Woods” landscape, a still life or two and a water scene by the seashore. Instructor: Susan Bikowski, resident. Note: For those repeating the class, there will be different subjects to paint.

For the generation that inspired Warhol, Pop Generation is a program exclusively for those over the age of 65. It takes place multiple times each year and features guided tours of The Warhol’s collection and special exhibitions, as well as a reception with complimentary refreshments. This month, you will experience a 90-minute tour and discussion focused on Nature and Paola Pivi. You will learn more about Warhol’s love of animals and artwork, depicting flora and fauna, in addition to enjoying the works of visiting artist Pivi. Call the registration line by April 27.

RCB ends their first post-pandemic season with a concert on the theme of resilience. Come and enjoy uplifting music by Louis Armstrong, Gloria Gaynor and Nat King Cole. This concert will also feature the last two of four finalists of the River City Brass Composers Competition, and the winner will be chosen by the audience. The Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology has its roots in a program of archaeological field work in the Near East that began in 1924, focusing on the Lands of the Bible: modern day Israel, West Bank and Jordan.
