We last examined this subject over a year ago, and now we will revisit some of the missed episodes. We will continue in December and then take a break, resuming Lifelong Learning on Jan. 9, 2023.
We will learn about the world’s first Western civilization and explore everyday life along the Nile during the New Kingdom.
We will learn about the Egyptian Gods who people, who the priests prayed to on behalf of the common people who were not permitted in the temple.
Most ancient civilizations were established along rivers for trade, etc., but here, we have two islands that lived a “thalassocracy” – an empire based on control of the sea.
We see early Greek life through the eyes of the common man: their interactions in the “polis” (city) and true democracy. The women were asked to stay in the home, and the slaves were to carry out the work. We will see the ballot process for the trial of Socrates.
These women were subjugated in all roles of their lives. See how “hetaerae,” or female companions, enjoyed relatively independent lives.
Learn about “manumission,” where a slave could be released, working to death in the fields or rising to be a craftsman.
We will learn about the opulence (for the time period) that the rich enjoyed, from clothing to food customs.
Even back in ancient times, there were “groupies” for the gladiators, charioteers and actors. Let’s not forget the politicians, who knew how to hog the limelight: Nero, Cleopatra and Theodora.
