Tai Chi

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. Therefore, it is especially suitable and beneficial for older adults. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

The Project Linus Group makes baby blankets and quilts for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. These items are distributed to hospitals, EMS units and other locations in the Allegheny, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland areas. If you would like to volunteer to knit, crochet or quilt, come join us. Materials are supplied.

OCTOBER RECIPE
EASY CRUSTLESS SPINACH AND CHEESE QUICHE
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 small, sweet onion, diced
4 oz. mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves minced garlic
10 oz. chopped, frozen spinach, thawed and drained
6 oz. crumbled
feta cheese
8 oz. shredded
cheddar cheese
5 large eggs
1/2 cup milk (1%, 2% or whole)
1/4 tsp. table salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add in onion and mushrooms and sauté until softened, about five to seven minutes. Add garlic and cook for one more minute. Turn off heat and stir in spinach, feta and cheddar cheese.
Spoon mixture into the prepared pie plate. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over the spinach mixture on the prepared pie plate. With a butter knife, gently incorporate the egg with the spinach mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, until eggs are set. Let it cool 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Inheriting America’s Musical Traditions
Jump rope songs and lullabies are a part of our heritage. We will also be introduced to the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings series.
The American Revolutionary and Wartime Music
“The President’s March,” “I’m Going Home to Dixie” and “I Didn’t Raise My Boy to be a Soldier” are a few examples of music from our early war history.

Our forefathers brought their own musical heritage with them when they came to America.
Minstrel Shows and Variety Shows
In the 1830s, music was coming from the slave population, setting the groundwork for minstrel shows, circuses, medicine shows and the development of vaudeville.
