Lancaster British Brass Band

Wednesday, May 31, 7 p.m.

Brossman Ballroom

The unique sound quality of Lancaster Brass Band is a result of it being composed entirely of brass winds and percussion instruments. The band’s sound has been compared to “one big, magnificent pipe organ.” Current conductor Dr. Andrew Yoziak is the director of bands in the Wells School of Music at West Chester University. Some songs included in this concert are “Magnificent Seven,” “Basin Street Blues,” “Fire in the Blood” and more. Please call ext. 33205 for transportation to this event.

History of Willow Grove Park

TUESDAY, MAY 2, 2 P.M.

GLH Solarium

Join resident Judy Parrish as she explores the history of one of the most popular trolley parks in the United States, Willow Grove Park. This presentation looks at the park’s fame, tragedies and triumphs from the early 1900s to its demise in 1976. Original postcards and memorabilia from the park will be displayed.

In 2021, our Masonic Village Veterans Committee introduced an annual Veterans Social with various themes. This year, our third annual Veterans Social will feature a dedication service to “cover” a select number of Korean War veterans with a Quilt of Valor to recognize and honor those who served in active combat duty during this conflict. The Quilt of Valor ® Foundation was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts. Its mission is: “To cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” All are welcome to attend.

American Humanities: Impressions of Late 19th Century America Through the Arts

As the American art world expanded in the 1880s and 1890s, art and music venues and organizations, museums and public art spaces also developed. The focus of this course will be the growth of the recognition of paintings and music of this golden age. Instructor is Cindy Rose, professor of humanities at HACC. Call ext. 14509 to register. Wesley Singers

For 30 years, a group of men known as the Wesley Singers have sung regularly at retirement communities throughout Lancaster County. Today, it has more than 50 “seasoned” singers who enjoy sharing their voices with others. The musical director is James Casler, a retired music education teacher and choir director. More than half of the members are veterans of the U.S. military.

GLH Solarium

Not all legends happen elsewhere. Many are close to where you live: Harrisburg, Hummelstown, Hershey and Wrightsville. They chronicle the hopes and fears of the people who settled this area. Join Storyteller Dennis Strain as he explores the legends of South Central Pennsylvania. This program will be repeated on Friday, May 19, at 10 a.m., in the Keystone Room.

Mother’s Day Concert with Josh and Elizabeth Tindall

This Mother’s Day musical program will feature Josh and Elizabeth on piano, organ and vocals. Stop in for a musical journey spanning from classical and hymn favorites all the way up to popular songs from the 20th and 21st centuries. It will be fun for all and will have you dancing in your seats!

Donna Hoffman, certified life-cycle celebrant and grief educator, will discuss the journey of hope and healing following loss. Donna’s passion for helping others encourages the griever to “grieve fully” and begin on a journey to “live fully.” She is a graduate of the Celebrant Foundation & Institute.

Established in 1896, the Bainbridge Band has been an asset to the community and surrounding areas ever since. It also provides an excellent experience for young people to learn discipline, responsibility and appreciation for our heritage. Dr. John Madeira, from Madeira Chiropractic Wellness Center in Hershey, will inform, educate and entertain as you learn about neuropathy. You will learn the definition of neuropathy and what causes it; the classic symptoms associated with neuropathy; how to know if you have it and what to do about it; the four different stages of neuropathy; how to know if your neuropathy can be stopped, even reversed; and the two main approaches to treating neuropathy and the major differences between them. Westminster Ringers, Inc., formed in September 1997 to provide gifted area musicians with the opportunity to play advanced handbell repertoire at the highest possible level of musical sensitivity and technical clarity. In addition, the ensemble seeks to advance the knowledge, awareness and viability of the art of handbell ringing. Westminster Ringers, Inc., owns 122 Malmark Handbells (spanning seven and three octaves) and 10 octaves of Malmark Choirchimes, two octaves of Malmark Cymbells and assorted percussion instruments.

Artificial Human Intelligence and the Movies – Will Computers Rule the World?

Believe it or not, from the earliest part of human history, there is evidence of artificial intelligence (AI). Until recently, the machines were dumb and not able to act alone; however, that has changed over the past few decades. Hollywood has taken up this theme of machine AI dominating the world and killing or enslaving humans to do so. From Hal in “2001: A Space Odyssey” to “Wargames” to “Terminator,” explore how popular films have used this theme to present a darker future for AI. Presented by Dr. Robert Wheelersburg, this program is sponsored by the Lifelong Discovery Fund.

Formal Garden Concert: Fabulous Greaseband

America’s party band is celebrating 50 fabulous years! The Fabulous Greaseband is a seven-member “Best of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s Rock ‘n’ Roll Party Band.” They are highly entertaining and energetic, delivering the greatest dance songs ever. Bring your lawn chairs outdoors to the Formal Gardens for this evening’s great entertainment, as we will not be broadcasting beyond the gardens. (Some chairs will be available, if needed.) AARP Safe Driver 4-hour Refresher Course

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24

The AARP Smart Driver Course is recognized as an approved Mature Driver Improvement Course by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Insured drivers ages 55 and older may be eligible for an appropriate reduction in automobile insurance premium charges after completing this course. Please check with your insurance company or agent for any additional requirement for eligibility. This program is a four-hour session for individuals who have taken the two-day AARP Safe Driver Course in the past. Cost for AARP members is $20; nonmembers are $25. Call ext. 14509 to register.

Donegal Rhythm Singers

The Donegal Rhythm Singers are a show choir from Donegal High School made up of students from grades 9-12. They have performed at many different venues all throughout Lancaster County and have even performed with the internationally known rock band Foreigner at the Giant Center in Hershey! They enjoy singing and dancing to many different genres of music.

Named after the famous big band leader, Glenn started performing at the age of 10. Movie Showing: “Taking Chance”

FRIDAY, MAY 26, 7:05 P.M.

This movie starring Kevin Bacon is the remarkable true story of one soldier’s death in battle, another soldier’s journey of discovery and a nation’s reverence and gratitude toward its war dead. After hearing of the heroic death of a young Marine in Iraq, veteran officer Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps back to his hometown in Wyoming. Now, on a trip across America’s heartland, Strobl will find himself on an unexpectedly emotional sojourn into the soul of a country mourning not only Phelps, but all our country’s fallen heroes. Memorial Day Program

This year, our Memorial Day program on campus changes to a morning time slot, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a music prelude by Ridgeway Brass. Master of Ceremonies Ben Hoenich and members of our Veterans Events Committee and National Sojourners will continue with a program to especially honor and recognize Masonic Medal of Honor winners, as we also remember all veterans who died in service. Please note: The National Moment of Remembrance is an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to pause for one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States. We ask that all residents stop to pause at 3 p.m., along with the rest of the country, to recognize our fallen veterans, wherever you happen to be at that time.

Located in the Freemasons Cultural Center, the Baird Wellness Center offers an array of cardiovascular and strength equipment, functional training, personal training and group fitness classes. Massage therapy and wellness workshops on mind, body and spirit are also offered.

Open daily, from 5 a.m. – 9 p.m. Staff are available Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Group exercise classes are broadcast on MVTV Monday through Friday, in the morning.

Please purchase punch cards at the Baird Wellness Center. Punch cards are a way to pay as you attend classes. You will receive the option of attending 10 classes per punch card, and punch cards are available for $35 each. For questions, call 717-361-5699.

During your guided tour, you will learn about how they raise alpacas and explore the on-site farm store stocked with all types of wonderful items made from alpaca fiber. For spinners and knitters, the store has raw fiber, as well as roving and yarn from their alpacas. Also, check out the wide color selection of Peruvian yarns. Donations are accepted.

Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights,” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through songs such as “Greased Lightning,” “It’s Raining on Prom Night” and “Alone at the Drive-in-Movie.” This production is located at the Fulton in Lancaster. Set adrift as a baby, he is an unlikely hero, until God calls him to lead his people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Journey with Moses as he ventures through the wilderness, encounters God at the burning bush and ascends to the top of Mount Sinai. Experience one of the Bible’s most epic stories as “Moses” comes to life with massive sets, special effects and live animals in this original stage production. 2023 BROSSMAN OUTDOOR POOL

NEW FOR THE 2023 SEASON:

Season passes are now available for adult children, spouses and grandchildren of residents.

• Season Passes are $130. (Starting June 5, season passes will be prorated weekly throughout the season.)

• Children under 2 years of age are free.

• Payable at the Baird Wellness Center (cash, check or credit card).

Times are subject to change due to lifeguard availability.

(The pool will be closed from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on June 17; it will reopen at 2 p.m.)

HOW TO ACQUIRE A COMPLIMENTARY SEASON PASS (FOR RESIDENTS):

1. Go to Brossman Outdoor Pool between May 27 – Sept. 4, between Noon and 6 p.m.

2. Show your MVP card to the lifeguard.

3. Complete season pass application (unless completed last year).

4. Lifeguard will issue your season passes.

SEASON PASSES WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ENTRY.

RULES

1. There will be a $5 charge to replace a pass if lost or destroyed.

2. Passes must be shown and barcode scanned upon each entry to the pool.

3. Swimsuits appropriate for a family facility are required.

4. All other posted rules must be followed.

This is a lawn event. You are welcome to bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Weather permitting. If canceled, pre-paid wristbands can be used at the next event.
