WELCOME
Hello... …and welcome to issue 66 of Australian Simply Cards. This month, we have lots of inspiring projects and new techniques to share with you and, as always, a fabulous free gift. To get started using your free embossing folder and stamps, head over to page 14 for some inspiring designs. We love to stay ahead of the game here at Australian Simply Cards and on page 18, Sandie Downey explores the doodling trend and how you can incorporate it into your cardmaking projects, giving them that personal touch. With Mother’s Day just around the corner we also have some pretty ideas to show mum just how loved she is. Debbie Pamment shares her thoughts on how to create something special over on page 26. Do you ever wonder what to do with the bits of cardstock that are cut away when you use your dies? Karen George demonstrates how to use the negatives of your die-cuts with fantastic results on page 34. I love to see how other crafts and art provide inspiration in papercrafting. This month, Janelle Graham explores the bokeh technique, which is widely used in photography, and reveals how it can be applied to cardmaking over on page 42. Going back to our classic favourites, ribbon is always popular with cardmakers, and this month, Melissa Barnicoat has some clever ways to incorporate it into your cardmaking projects on page 56. It’s not all about the adults this issue though; cards for children are always fun to make and over on page 64 Sarah Cameron has some colourful ideas for cards as well as birthday invites to see you through the year. Another new technique we look at this month is bargello, which is commonly used in needlework. Karelyn Joy shows us how it can be transferred to papercraft projects with stunning results on page 80. And finally, the announcement you have all been waiting for: the winner of the 2013 Cardmaker of the Year competition is revealed. Head over to page 72 to meet our winner and see some of the amazing entries we’ve received. Of course these are just the highlights of what we have for you this issue and we have lots more, including all the latest news and the usual tips and tricks. And if you can’t wait for next issue, take a sneaky peek at our digital preview of issue 67 by visiting www.ppjump.com/asc67preview So until next month… Happy crafting!

hen I think of my mum while I was growing up, I think of fun and laughter, rules and regulations, feeling safe and, above all, unconditional love. As a mother myself, I know the ups and downs of parenting and the joy of watching your little people grow into independent adults. And then the heartbreak and pride as that independent adult leaves home for the very first time. But the unconditional love is always there. When trying to represent
W

motherhood in cardmaking my thoughts go to flowers, butterflies, lace and sparkle, blended with elements that represent the core of strength all mothers need to have. How do you say thank you to someone who will take your calls in the middle of the night, dry your tears and wipe your nose? You create something from the heart, and I hope these projects give you some ideas along the way. I love the butterfly design I’ve used on many of these projects and was happy that it came in two sizes. The ability

to use it as a simple stamped image, to add colour and to layer it up for more intricate work means it’s great for stampers of all levels. The stylised design mixes well with more romantic elements too, or it can stand proudly on its own – a great way to represent all facets of motherhood. I think that being able to personalise a gift with a handmade gift bag or box adds so much more to the item. We all know parents of all ages treasure things made especially for them by their
children. One of my favourite pieces of artwork is a poem written by my daughter in primary school. She typed it out in class and framed it up beautifully. I bet we all have items handmade by our children hidden in filing cabinets, in boxes, or on display. These bag and box projects are just a more grown-up version of those mementoes. I hope you find them useful and it may help to know that both of these designs can be enlarged quite simply to fit different presents and embellishments. l
