e m o c l e W ... to our Australia issue! This is one of my favourite issues of the year – again I am blown away by the amazing quilts our readers have made to celebrate our Great Southern Land. In this year’s readers’ gallery you will also find a wonderful collection of quilts for Aussie heroes: Australian men and women currently serving overseas. Do go and visit the Aussie Heroes blog to find out how you can become involved: www. aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com.au. The blogger we meet in this issue fits in very well with the Australian theme, as it is Lucy Carroll, whose award-winning quilt Soldier On I am sure you will have seen, and admired. Lucy talks about the projects she is currently working on, such as the ANZAC Quilt, which will be displayed at the Australasian
Quilt Convention in Melbourne in April. The image below is a detail of this quilt, which will be an impressive 12m long when finished! Of course we have some Australian-inspired projects, such as Keith Wood’s striking quilt Uluru, Merlynn Harrison’s Aussie iPad cover and Jocelyne Leath’s gum leaf bookmark. There’s also the final part of our Quilt-a-Long with Rebecca Stewart-Bartell – we hope you have enjoyed making this very Australian quilt and would love to see photos (you can email them to linda.robertus@practical publishing.com.au). Enough from me – grab a cold drink, put your feet up and enjoy this issue! Linda Robertus Editor

Level:
Fabric requirements All fabric is 100% cotton, 100cm (40in) wide, pre-washed and ironed, unless otherwise stated. 25 coloured fabric fat eighths for the blocks (see Fabric choices) 3m (3 1/4yd) white fabric for block background 3.2m (3 1/2yd) fabric for backing 50cm (1/2yd) fabric for binding Other requirements Rotary cutter, ruler & mat Threads for piecing & quilting Iron & ironing board 172cm x 210cm (68in x 83in) batting Sewing machine with 1/4in patchwork foot & walking foot Pencil for marking fabric Masking tape Safety pins for basting Dimensions 152cm x 190cm (60in x 75in) Block size 30cm x 38cm (12in x 15in) There are 50 blocks in total. Two blocks create one mountain and a mountain reflection. From each of the 25 fat eighths: Cut two, 9in squares
Cutting
All measurements include a scant 1/4in seam allowance. All strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless otherwise stated. Cut fabric in the order given, to ensure that all pieces can be cut to the dimensions required. It is recommended that you cut and make a sample block before cutting out all the pieces to complete the quilt.
Fabric choices A fat eighth is half of a fat quarter and measures approximately 25cm x 55cm (10in x 22in). Each fat eighth makes two blocks
From the white fabric: Cut 50, 9in squares From the binding fabric: Cut seven, 2 1/2in squares
Construction
All seams are a scant 1/4in unless otherwise stated.
For the Delectable Mountain blocks
1 Take one 9in square from the coloured fabric and one 9in square from the white fabric. Place right sides together and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the white square. Sew 1/4in on either side of the drawn line (see Photo 1).
Photo 1
2 Cut apart on the line and press seams open. You now have two half-square triangle (HST) units. Trim the HST units to measure exactly 8in x 8in. 3 Lay the HST units right sides together with white and colour fabrics opposite each other (see Photo 2).

Finishing Photo 3
4 Cut the HST units into 2in strips as shown in Photo 3. Re-arrange the order of the strips as shown in Photo 4. 5 Sew the top strips together, followed by the bottom strips (see Photo 5). Sew both units together. Repeat with the other 9in square from the same fat eighth, and a white 9in square. 6 Follow the above steps with all 9in squares.
Assembly
1 Using the photograph of the quilt as a guide, arrange blocks into five rows of 10 blocks. Stitch the blocks together in rows. Press seams open. 2 Join each of the five rows together to make the completed quilt top.
1 Press the quilt top well. Cut the backing fabric in half and join with a 1/2in seam. Press the seam open. 2 Lay the backing right side down on a flat surface and secure with masking tape, ensuring fabric is taut but not distorted. Centre the batting on top, smoothing out any wrinkles. Centre the quilt top on top of the batting. Baste the three layers together using safety pins. 3 Electrify was quilted with an all-over design called ‘Triangle Tangle’ by Donna Warren of Quilted 4 You.
Binding
1 Join the nine binding strips using a 45º seam. Trim the seams and press open. Press the strip in half lengthways with wrong sides together. Starting halfway along one side of the quilt, and leaving a 12in tail, sew the binding to the front of the quilt with a walking foot, matching the raw edges of the quilt with the raw edge of the binding. Mitre the corners as you come to them and finish sewing approximately 12in from the starting point.
Photo 5
3 Finish sewing the binding to the quilt front. 4 Trim the batting and backing, ensuring the corners are square. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and slip-stitch it in place.
Jenny Woodward
Jenny Woodward started sewing at an early age, but only completed her first quilt three years ago. Since then, she has created her own business, Jack’s Room, where she designs and publishes patterns and takes quilt commissions. Jenny can be contacted on jacksroom@hotmail.com.au. To see more of her quilts, check out www.jacksroom.com.au
2 On a flat surface, lay the quilt flat and smooth out the two tails. Pin-mark where they meet. Open the tails and finger-press at the mark. Sew along this fold. Check the binding fits well. Trim the seam and press open.
