ear readers and supporters of Praga, I am pleased to introduce to you the first issue of Praga Journal of the new year. Last year held many significant events and achievements for the Praga brand and IPKarting, including the strong rivalry of the Praga Kart Racing team in the company of established professional teams at the international level, and the amazing achievement of the World Cup win in the KZ1 category; introducing new kart models for beginner drivers and rentals; and finally the continuous development and improvement of our existing products. For 2013, we can only expect the continued, sharp rise of the brand, supported by a high standard of quality in our products, and our participation in range of events, such as the opening of the Praga Arena, the Supernationals race in Las Vegas, and the ROTAX Grand Finals, which are all featured in this issue. From the entire team at IPKarting, we hope you enjoy reading this issue, and we wish you continued success with the Praga brand.

Praga Arena to Open this Year Otevření Praga Arény již tento rok

raga has established its first indoor karting track, Praga Arena, guaranteed to give you a maximum driving experience. It is located in Prague, Czech Republic on 17,000m2 of property, and is one of the most modern karting tracks in the Czech Republic. The track is approximately 700m long and 7m wide, and has 4 variable layouts, an asphalt racing surface, and electronic timing system. The arena is stocked with 26 Praga karts in total (14 classic rental, 6 racing, and 6 kid’s), so there’s something for everyone to drive. It also has a full restaurant and outdoor garden, making it the perfect place for exciting group and corporate events. orridas, Praga’s official distributor in Portugal and Spain, hosted The ROTAX Micro Max Festival at the beginning of December, which took place at the Kartodromo International do Algarve in Portimao, Portugal. The race, organized together with the ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE Grand Finals, was the first time that a Grand Final hosted an event for younger drivers. 36 drivers from Spain and Portugal competed, and were supplied with the Praga Piccolo chassis, engines, racing suits, and tires. Praga staff were also on hand to help the drivers at the event, including two seasoned ROTAX drivers, Pole Karol Dabski and Kiwi Josh Hart, who also mechanics for the Praga Kart Racing team. Hart says of the event: “It was great to see the younger kids have the chance to show their stuff in front of the top ROTAX drivers from all around the world, and that I

was able to share my knowledge and experience with these up-and-coming drivers.” The race proved to be a great opportunity to present the Praga brand on an international level as well as to promote the brand within the young ROTAX categories in Portugal and Spain. Praga was very pleased to be able to support these young drivers, and hopes to further its cooperation in the ROTAX Grand Finals in the coming year. •

ficiální distributor Pragy pro Portugalsko a Španělsko, známý pod názvem Koridas, začátkem prosince loňského roku hostoval ROTAX Micro Max Festival, který se konal v „Kartodromo International do Algarve“ v Portugalsku. Společně s tímto závodem, se konal i ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE a Velké Finále, a poprvé se mohli zapojit i mladší jezdci. Na startovní čáru se tak postavilo 36 jezdců z Portugalska

a Španělska, kteří byli vybaveni motokárou Praga Piccolo, motorem, pneumatiky a závodním oblečením. Praga tým jim byl po celou dobu k dispozici, včetně dvou zkušených závodníku, Pole Karola Dabskiho a Kiwi Joshe Harta, kteří působí zároveň i jako mechanici pro Praga Kart závodní tým. Hart k této akci říká: „Bylo úžasné vidět, jak ti malí závodníci mají tu příležitost se ukázat před zkušenými ROTAX piloty z celého světa, a já jsem měl tu možnost se s nimi podělit o své znalosti a zkušenosti“. Tento závod poskytl Pragovce možnost zviditelnit svou

značku jak na mezinárodním poli, tak i v mladých ROTAX kategoriích v Portugalsku a Španělsku. Praga měla velkou radost, že mohla podpořit mladé závodníky, a doufá v další spolupráci s ROTAX Velké Finále v nadcházejícím roce. •

raga certainly had much to celebrate at the 16th edition of SKUSA Supernationals, the grand end-of-season event that takes place on the special circuit set up outside the Rio Hotel & Casino. Along with Praga drivers from North America, the Praga Kart Racing team was on the track with 8 drivers in 4 categories, and they went home with two podiums of their own, as well as a third from US driver Trevor McAlister. In KZ2, Patrik Hajek was fast in the heats, then raced a fantastic final conquering a well-deserved podium with 3rd place. Bas Lammers climbed up throughout the heats, closing the final on the rebound in 4th place, a step from the podium. Racing in S1 was Praga’s technical manager Alessandro Manetti, proving his

experience as former world champion: he qualified 3rd overall, drove excellent heats, and finished with a well-earned podium in the final (3rd). About the chassis’ performance Manetti said, “I’m very happy about the chassis. Honestly, all year I [was] happy, but I was waiting for this race to see

how it [would perform], and in the end I can say it was amazing, for me and for Patrik too.” In S4, Praga was strongly represented by Leading Edge Motorsports driver Trevor McAlister, who finished 2nd in the race, as well as clinching a 2nd place finish overall in the SKUSA ProTour standings. Of his finish, he said “ I was ready and setup for the win, but I made an axle change right before the final and it was not good. The kart had too much grip and was a handful to keep from hopping off the track. So I had to slow my pace and drive a very defensive race to be able to hold the 2nd position. But I still felt very proud about my outcome.” •

nationals, který se konal na speciálním okruhu před Rio Hotel & Casino. Společně s Praga jezdci ze severní Ameriky, Praga Kart Racing tým se zúčastnil s 8 jezdci ze 4 kategorií, a domů si přivezli hned 2 pódiová umístění. Dále bodoval i americký závodník Trevor McAlister, který obsadil 3 místo.

V kategorii KZ2 se na 3 místě umístil Patrik Hájek, a v těsné blízkosti se na něj dotahoval Bas Lammers, který se tak probojoval na 4 místo. Technický manažer Alessandro Manetti (S1), bývalý světový šampion se kvalifikoval po excelentním výkonu na 3 pozici. O výkonu podvozku nám Mannetti řekl, „Z podvozku jsem opravdu nadšený. Celý rok jsem byl spokojen, ale s napětím jsem čekal, jak obstojí v tomto závodě, a musím říct, že nezklamal jak mně, tak ani Patrika“. V S4 Pragu statečně reprezentoval Trevor McAlister, který si v závodě dojel pro 2 místo a celkově se umístil rovněž na 2 pozici ve SKUSA ProTour. Na otázku, jaké má pocity z umístění řekl, „Byl jsem připraven vyhrát, ale na poslední chvíli jsem vyměnil osu a to nebylo správné rozhodnutí. Motokára měla příliš tvrdé uchopení a bylo těžké ji udržet od skákání z trati, tudíž jsem musel zpomalit a jet defenzivní závod, abych udržel 2 pozici. Přesto jsem na své umístění pyšný “. •

Florida Winter Tour Round 1

The Florida Winter Tour hosts back-to-back race weekends for three consecutive months, from January to March. The first weekend hosts Formula K for the TaG categories, while the second weekend hosts the ROTAX categories.

raga was represented in TaG Junior by Team MDD driver Juan Manuel Correa, who started the weekend in P2 for qualifying and heat 1. In heat 2, FWT is experimenting by inverting the field, so Correa started second from last, but made his way through the field to finish P4. He went on finish Saturday’s final in P2. Sunday saw Correa have a good run of heat races, and he brought home the win for Praga USA/ Team MDD in the final (P1). In TaG Senior, Praga had drivers Roger Ralston and Hunter Ceto, also from Team MDD. Ralston qualified P2, and finished P10 and P5 in the heats, while Ceto qualified P10 and finished P6 and P8. In Saturday’s final, Ralston brought home a podium finish (P3). The Seniors also had a good day on Sunday, qualifying P3

(Ralston) and P4 (Ceto),while Ralston went on to finish P2 in the final. Wilson Hurtado, from Praga North America, also ran in the Senior category, finishing a step from the podium on Saturday (P5), and landing the podium (P3) on Sunday. Jay Howard, Team MDD Manager and President of Praga USA: “I am very happy with how the entire first round of FWT at PBIR went. We had many podiums, including wins and couldn’t ask for more out of the product. We will only get stron-

ger as the championship progresses. The Praga Kart performed exceptionally well as always, and we look forward to many more victories as the year unfolds, hopefully adding championship titles to the Praga brand.”

he ROTAX weekend saw Praga represented across five categories between the Praga USA and North America teams. In DD2, Marco Di Leo (Praga North America) found his way to the podium both on Saturday and Sunday racing a Praga Kart in DD2, a new class for the Canadian star. His day went from P5 to P3 in a wet first run, then he charged from the back of the pack to finish P3 once again on Sunday after being deemed less than a mm too wide in qualifying. “It was a solid points weekend for me in my debut in the DD2 category,” Di Leo said after the event from the IPK home base near Toronto, Canada. “It was gutting to not take the win on Sunday, but I’ll work harder to win the next one and hopefully get into a better position in the points race.” On Team MDD, Juan Manuel Correa raced Praga in the Junior category. Saturday saw him taking P3 in the pre-final and a P4 finish in appalling wet conditions in the final. On Sunday, Correa went on to finish P4 in the pre-final, but then got into an incident that put him last and way back in the field, where he recovered to a P14 finish.

Of the weekend overall, Team Manager Marco Di Leo said, “We had a lot of speed in both the wet and dry conditions but things just didn’t go our way too often. Still, it was a great weekend of experience for our young team, and we’re all now looking forward to the second event as many of our young drivers will bring the same good speed with a little more experience to the table. There will be more podiums to come!” The next weekends of the Florida Winter Tour will take place at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, 16-17 February and 20-22 February. •

s a race car, the single-seater achieves a perfect balance between its attractive design and aerodynamic efficiency. With a bodywork comprised of a single shell monocoque primarily constructed of carbon fiber and kevlar, it weighs in at only 590 kg dry. The adjustable front and rear wings allow for strong downforce, while the under tray and diffuser accelerate airflow beneath the car. All these components were optimized using Computational Fluid Dynamics, allowing for better handling through corners and greater stability. Add to that the base model’s naturally aspirated 2-liter 4-cylinder engine from Renault Sports Technologies, which generates 210 hp (157 kW) at 7,500 rpm, and the R1 clocks in at a low 3.58 kg/kW weight-to-power ratio. With all that under the hood, there’s no doubt the R1 is designed with driver safety in mind. The carbon monocoque bodywork is reinforced with internal ribs and bulkheads, and it also has carbon crumple zones located at the front and side parts to absorb the crash energy. Large-scaled sandwich panel floor increases torsion rigidity and protects the pilot and frame itself against damage caused by aggressive curb driving. Six-point seat belts, neck restraints, integrated fire extinguisher system, polycarbonates windows and safety tank are also integrated, creating a

complete and comprehensive safety system that conforms to all current FIA racing safety regulations. Prototype testing took place in October at the SlovakiaRing track in Orechova Poton, and the R1 will make its 2013 racing debut in the Superlights class of the SuperCar Challenge. While the R1 is primarily track-focused, the addition of an optional second seat and front headlights make it ready to be driven on public roads if desired. And with a starting price of only 98.000 Euro, you can expect to see a lot more of this beauty on a track (or maybe a street) near you very soon. •

Velká sendvičová podlaha zvyšuje torzní tuhost a chrání jezdce a rám před poškozením způsobeném agresivním ježděním přes obrubníky. Šestibodové bezpečnostní pásy, systém ochrany krku, integrovaný hasící systém, polykarbonátová okna a bezpečnostní nádrž vytvářejí kompletní a komplexní bezpečnostní systém, který vyhovuje všem současným FIA bezpečnostním předpisům. Test prototypu se konal v říjnu na trati SlovakiaRing v Orechove Potoni a R1 bude mít svou závodní premiéru 2013 v kategorii Superligths při SuperCar Challenge. Přestože je R1 zaměřená především na závodní trať, přidání druhého sedadla a předních světlometů z ní v případě chuti dělá auto připravené k jízdě po veřejných komunikacích. A se zahajovací cenou pouhých 98 000 Euro můžete očekávat mnohem více této krásy na trati (nebo možná na ulici) ve vaší blízkosti velmi brzy. •

You’ve had a pretty impressive year. How was it racing on the Praga chassis? It’s a great kart! I had many wins this year on Praga. I decided to go with the Praga Tacho due to the chassis design. Being a tall driver, I wanted a kart that would be more rigid in the waist line, and I am very

pleased with how adaptable it is to different tracks.

What’s the most important factor for you going into a race?

Going into races, I have what I call “The 5 Ps: Proper Preparation Prepares for Perfect Performances!” To be prepared and ready going into a race is the best way to win before you unload for the race!

Tell us your outlook for the 2013 season. For 2013 I am going for a few goals: Win, win, and win! I plan on competing in the ROTAX Challenge of the Americas, SKUSA Pro Tour, SKUSA ProKart Challenge, and of course, SKUSA SuperNationals! •

Závodník Trevor McAlister, přezdívaný jako „T-Mac“, prožil celkem zajímavý rok s Pragou. V SKUSA Pro Tour Challenge se umístil na druhé pozici a jako třetí dojel v SKUSA ProKart Challenge. Měl jste velmi působivý rok. Jaké bylo závodění s Praga podvozkem?

Je to úžasná motokára! Měl jsem hned několik vítězství s Pragou. Pro Praga Tacho jsem se rozhodl kvůli jeho vzhledu. Tím, že jsem vysoký potřebuji podvozek, který by byl pevný ve středové linii, a jsem velmi spokojen s tím, jak je tato motokára přizpůsobivá na různých okruzích. Co je pro Vás nejdůležitější faktor při účasti na závodech? Pro účast na závodech je nejdůležitější dokonalá preparace pro perfektní výkon. Být připraven je to nejlepší, co jezdec může před závodem udělat. Prozraďte nám Váš plán pro příští sezonu 2013 V roce 2013 mám několik cílů. Vyhrát, vyhrát a vyhrát! Chystám se na následující závody: ROTAX Challenge, SKUSA Pro Tour, SKUSA ProKart Challenge, a samozřejmě SKUSA SuperNationals! •

They’ve even introduced the new wave of “Swarovski” crystal embellishments, which were featured on Praga driver Bas Lammers’ special edition “Vegas” helmet. But just how do these designs get made? We go behind the scenes to find out.

Tipy a rady Petra Ulberta In our Tips and Advice section, we deal with the important steps to start or develop a successful motorsport career. In this issue, we will focus once again on gradually increasing driving skills as it relates to the physical and mental condition of the driver.

V naší rubrice „Rady a nápady“, se věnujeme důležitým krokům, jak začít nebo rozvíjet úspěšnou motoristickou kariéru. V tomto vydání se budeme věnovat opět tomu jak postupně zvyšovat jezdecké dovednosti v návaznosti na fyzickou a psychickou kondici jezdce.

Physical Condition Perfect physical condition has a significant influence on the performance of the driver during a race. The driver must be capable of performing a balanced and maximum performance throughout the duration of the race. Each heat can last about 15-25 minutes, which is a very long time to maintain maximum physical performance. Such lengthy physical activity requires long-term preparation, because the driver must possess both strength and endurance. It is not enough to just have arm strength, since driving a racing kart places great strain over the driver’s entire body. The ideal preparation for drivers is to follow an athletic checklist. Running, weights, reflex exercises, and rowing are all excellent ways to train. Other standard exercises include “squats and pushups”. A driver should be able to complete 50 squats and 100 pushups without any difficulty. Reflex exercises in observation and coordination are also important in training. The normal human reaction time is about 0.7 seconds, but a top driver’s reaction time can be as quick as 0.15 seconds.

Fyzická kondice Bezvadná fyzická kondice má významný vliv na výkon jezdce při závodech. Jezdec musí být schopen po celou dobu závodů podávat vyrovnané a maximální výkony. Jednotlivé jízdy trvají cca 15 až 25 minut. Což je velmi dlouhá doba na podání maximálního fyzického výkonu. Taková časově dlouhá fyzická zátěž vyžaduje dlouhodobou přípravu. Jezdec musí mít sílu a vytrvalost. Jízda v závodní motokáře zatěžuje celé jezdcovo tělo velkým přetížením. Nestačí mít jen sílu v rukou. Ideální přípravou pro jezdce je atletická abeceda. Běhání, posilovna, reflexní cviky, výborným cvičením je veslařský trenažér. Standardním cvikem jsou také“ kliky a dřepy“. 100 kliků a 50 dřepů musí jezdec udělat v naprosté pohodě. Reflexní cviky na postřeh a koordinaci pohybů jsou důležitou částí tréninku. Reakční doba běžného člověka je cca 0,7 sekundy. Špičkový jezdec má reakční dobu 0,15 sekundy.

Mental Condition

Psychická kondice Každý jezdec je vystaven značné psychické zátěži. Vždy je ale důležité umět rozpoznat příčinu nervozity jezdce. Na každého jezdce působí také jiné vlivy. Zásadním předpokladem dobré psychické kondice je jistota ve výkonu jezdce. Pokud jezdec zvládá bez potíží závodění, tak je jeho psychika v pořádku. Jezdec potřebuje zvládat závod s jistotou fyzicky i technicky. Každý nedostatek se okamžitě projevuje v jeho výkonu a je potom nesmírně důležité umět vyhodnotit správnou příčinu a s jezdcem tuto příčinu dostatečně probrat a najít její řešení. Pozitivním a motivačním způsobem nasměrovat jezdce do další práce. Přehnané očekávání a následné zklamání se může na jezdcově psychice dlouhodobě negativně podepsat. Je tedy nutné při výchově jezdce očekávat reálné výkony s ohledem na jeho aktuální dosažené jezdecké a fyzické schopnosti. Skokan do výšky také neskočí 2.30cm za 6 měsíců tréninku. Stejné je to i v motosportu.

A driver’s diet should consist of long-term commitment to a proper, nutritious food and drink regimen. Again, it is not only enough to do this during races, but it should be maintained constantly.

Životospráva jezdce spočívá v dlouhodobém dodržování vhodného stravování a pitného režimu. Opět nestačí dodržovat vhodné stravování jen v průběhu závodů.

Every driver is subjected to a significant amount of mental stress. It is always important to be able to recognize the cause of anxiety in drivers. There are many effects that influence every driver. A fundamental prerequisite for good mental condition is certainty in the driver’s performance. If a driver manages racing without difficulty, then they are in the proper mental condition. The driver needs to handle the race with confidence, both physically and technically. Any deficiency is immediately seen in the performance, and then it’s extremely important to be able to assess the exact causes and discuss this with the driver to find a proper solution. It is necessary to find a positive and motivating way to direct drivers to the next task. Exaggerated expectations and subsequent disappointments can have a long-term negative effect on a driver’s psyche. It is therefore necessary to manage a driver’s expectations of their performance based on their current driving abilities and achievements. A jumper does not jump to a height of 2.30 cm after only six months of training, and the same is true in motorsports.
