ear Praga Journal readers, Praga brand fans, and lovers of fast cars, in your hands is the next issue of our quarterly magazine, dedicated to this year’s particularly significant anniversary. It’s been 105 years since the Praga brand saw the light of day, and in that time it has had a rich history, full of both great successes and difficult periods. Its present and future we are only just creating, and we realize that our successes are owed to the fans of the brand. As a thank you, enjoy the third issue of Praga Journal in which you will discover, among other things, how we celebrated Praga’s birthday and how we performed at important races. We hope that you continue to enjoy our magazine, and do not miss the next issue!

raga has a long partnership with race driver Jan Charouz from the ADR-Delta team, who in the Oreca 03 (Nissan) race car, fought alongside his colleagues J. Martin and T. Graves at the prestigious 24h of Le Mans race. After 24 hours and 4715.63 kilometers, the ADR-Delta team achieved success in the form of fastest lap in the LMP2 category, and Charouz himself drove the fastest lap time in this category at the race. Now, he answers some questions for us about the race, his early days in racing, and his future with the Praga brand.

Your team was able, after 24h:04m:44s, to maintain an average speed of 195.8 km/h. What must drivers undergo in order to undertake such a demanding physical performance? How did the drivers prepare? It is really hard work, the most difficult is to maintain concentration during a long stint and not make a mistake. To find the right balance between speed and not too much cost or risk to overtake slower cars. Preparation consists of endurance training, running, cycling, etc. Also, we practice a lot of core strengthening for total body, and also the neck, which takes on a lot during the race.

Je to velká dřina. Nejtěžší je udržet koncentraci během dlouhého stintu a neudělat chybu. Najít správný balanc mezi rychlostí a ne příliš velkým riskem při předjíždění pomalejších aut. Příprava spočívá v tréninku vytrvalosti, běh, kolo atd.. Také hodně cvičíme “core” na celkové zpevnění těla a pak krk, který při závodech dostává hodně zabrat.

Your racing career started in karting, what is the most important thing you learned from karting for future racing? Perhaps the most important is the operation of the car, and ideally cornering. Also in the race strategy and overtaking maneuvers, etc. Although each car or formula goes a little differently, ultimately they all have a steering wheel, brake, and gas. What do you, as a young driver, think about the Praga brand nowadays? Do you have any plans to work with Praga in the future? I like all motors, whether it’s cars, tanks or aircraft, so I’m very close to the company. First of all I would like to thank Praga for supporting me. You probably know that Praga has a driver program and also Praga Racing, which manufactures cars and racing karts. At the moment I would like to, for preparation, train with Praga, and in the future I would like to maintain a positive relationship with the company. •

Co všechno musí jezdci podstoupit, aby tak náročný fyzický výkon podali? Jak probíhá příprava jezdců?

Svou závodní kariérou jste začínal na motokárách, jaká je nejdůležitější věc kterou jste se pro Vaše budoucí závodění v kartingu naučil? Asi nejdůležitější je fungování auta a ideální průjezd zatáčkami. Také strategie při závodě, předjížděcí manévry atd. Sice se s každým autem nebo formulí musí jet trošku jinak, ale nakonec to všechno má volant, brzdu a plyn. Co Vám, jako mladému závodníkovi říká v dnešní době značka Praga? Máte s Pragovkou další společné plány? Mám rád všechno motorové, ať už jde o auta, tanky nebo letadla, takže je mi firma hodně blízká. V prvé řadě bych chtěl moc poděkovat, že mě Praga podporuje. Asi víte, že má Praga i zavodní program Praga Racing, ve kterém vyrábí zavodní auta a motokáry. Momentálně bych chtěl v rámci přípravy trénovat s Pragou a do budoucna bych rád udržel s touto společností pozitivní vztah. •

THE ROTAX MICRO MAX FESTIVAL EL ROTAX MICRO MAX FESTIVAL

orridas, Praga’s official distributor in Portugal and Spain, will be hosting the ROTAX Micro Max Festival, to take place 28th November through 1st December in Portimao, Portugal. The race will be organized together with the ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE Grand Finals, and will be the first time ever that a Grand Final will host such a large event catering specifically to young drivers. Due to federation rules it is a national race, open only to Spanish and Portuguese drivers, but it will be prepared with same image and concept of ROTAX Grand Finals. The idea for this race came to be after Korridas organized a successful Micromax/Mini Max festival in Portugal last year. They believe this will be a great opportunity to present the Praga brand on an international level, as well as to promote the brand within the young ROTAX categories in Portugal and Spain. At three months out, the event already has 34 places filled, with at least 10 more drivers on the waiting list. Drivers only need to arrive with their helmet, and Praga and Korridas will supply them with the Praga Piccolo chassis, engines, racing suits, and tires. Praga staff will also be on hand to help the drivers at the event. Praga achieves many benefits from participating and sponsoring such an event. Thanks to Praga, Korridas has offered a very good deal to the drivers, and most of them have decided to purchase the chassis after the race, meaning more pilots will be driving Pra-

ga chassis in Spain and Portugal next season. This is also a very important step for Praga to become one of the future chassis suppliers of the ROTAX Grand Finals. •

está abierta solamente a pilotos de Portugal y de España, pero está preparada según el mismo concepto e imagen de la Rotax Grand Finals. La idea de este evento ocurrió después de Korridas organizar el pasado año en Portugal el Micro Max/Mini Max Festival y que fue un suceso. Ellos creen que este evento será seguramente una gran oportunidad para presentar y desarrollar la marca Praga a nivel internacional, pero también promover la marca en las categorías Rotax de niños en Portugal y España. Cuando aún quedan tres meses para celebrarse la carrera este evento ya tiene las 34 plazas llenas y con más 10 pilotos de reserva. Para este evento los pilotos solo necesitan llegar con su casco y Praga y Korridas suministraran el chasis Praga Picolo, motor, neumáticos y mono. El «staff» de Praga estará también en la pista para ayudar los pilotos en el evento. Con su participación y apoyo en este evento, Praga tendrá seguramente importantes ventajas y, además, permitió que Korridas pueda ofrecer un buen negocio para todos los pilotos, pues muchos de ellos han decidido quedarse con el chasis al final del evento y, consecuentemente, tener muchos chasis Praga en las pistas portuguesas y españolas en la próxima temporada. In the footsteps of Praga Po stopách Pragovky With Emil and Robert Prihoda S Emilem a Robertem Příhodovými

he Praga Auto Museum, which gives the public access to a unique collection of the brand’s vehicles spanning a history of 105 years, has itself had a long tradition. It was founded in 1957 by Emil Prihoda, in order to map the history of the Czech Republic’s largest carmaker, and thus the history of the Czech automotive industry, which at that time was among the top in Europe. Currently, Mr. Prihoda runs the museum jointly with his son Robert and their family. We spoke with both about the museum’s history, what their work entails, and in this interview, Mr. Emil Prihoda also shares the fascinating story about their passion for the Praga brand. We thank the Prihoda family, not only for the interview, but also that through the museum’s exhibits, a new generation will be able to learn about the ancestry that produced these sophisticated products, which were widely used throughout Europe in their time.

Založil ho v roce 1957 Emil Příhoda za účelem zmapování historie naší největší automobilky a tím i historie českého automobilového průmyslu, který ve své době patřil k evropské špičce. V současnosti muzeum pan Příhoda vede společně se svým synem Robertem Příhodou a jeho rodinou. S oběma jsme si povídali o historii muzea, o tom, co obnáší jejich práce a mnohém dalším. Pou-

Rodině Příhodových velmi děkujeme nejen za rozhovor, ale také za to, že díky exponátům soustředěným v Automuzeu Praga budou i nové generace mít možnost přesvědčit se, že naši předkové dokázali vyrábět na jejich dobu velmi sofistikované produkty, které nacházely uplatnění v celé tehdejší Evropě!

FEATURE How did the idea to establish the Praga Auto Museum come about? And why did you choose that brand?

The idea to establish the museum emerged from the comparison of automobiles in our country and the world. At that time, the Praga manufacturer was clearly a world leader, and it was one of the main reasons why we chose this brand. The level of quality of Praga cars, and the operation and common use of other car brands was confirmed by us. We had personal experience and made comparisons. Our young family was overjoyed when they were able to get several interesting Praga cars that were already serving in normal operation at the time. It was a time when those now-rare exhibits could disappear forever. As we gathered exhibits, we received a number of documents on the longterm management of the highly modern car production. The feeling of regret and a desire to preserve the glorious history led us to the decision to establish the museum.

In 1998, you published a book on the history of Praga for its 90th anniversary, and also created a DVD about the history of the Praga brand and museum. Do you have any similar projects lined up? Based on the newly launched cooperation with Praga Export - which has, to our great joy, a special interest in preserving the brand’s history - we are preparing a book about the brand from 1998 through 2012. In May, you celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Praga Auto Museum, and this year also commemorates the 105th anniversary of the Praga brand itself. Do you see this as a very significant year? The interplay of these important dates, along with the newly launched coopera-

tion with Praga Export, make this a very enjoyable and successful year for us. To celebrate the museum’s anniversary, you expanded the exhibit to include the new Praga racing kart and Praga R4S car. How do you like it, and what you think about the Praga brand returning? In May this year, we held a gathering for all friends and supporters of the Auto Museum, as thanks for their long-term cooperation and support. The event was attended by 200 prominent guests, including the Mayor of Prague, CEO of Czech Technical Museum, President of the Czech Republic Automobile Club, and members of the press and television. It was a great pleasure that, on this occasion, we received from Praga Export the last-made Praga motorcycle, the Praga racing kart, and the Praga R4S car, one of the first new models produced by the Praga brand. We believe that the continuation of modern manufacturing under the world-famous

FEATURE V rámci oslav výročí založení muzea jste rozšířili expozici i o nové Pragovky – závodní motokáru a vůz Praga R4S. Jak se vám líbí a co si myslíte o návratu značky Praga?

Jak vznikl nápad založit Automuzeum Praga? A proč jste zvolil právě tuto značku? Nápad založit Automuzeum Praga vzešel ze srovnání autovýrobců v naší zemi a ve světě. Automobilka Praga patřila ve své době jednoznačně ke světové špičce a to patřilo k těm hlavním důvodům, proč jsme se rozhodli právě pro tuto značku. Kvalitu a úroveň vozů Praga nám potvrdilo i provozování a běžné používání vozů jiných značek. Měli jsme osobní zkušenost a mohli srovnávat. Naše mladá rodina měla obrovskou radost, když se nám podařilo získat několik ve své době velice zajímavých vozů Praga, které již v běžném provozu dosluhovaly. Bylo to období, kdy tyto dnes vzácné exponáty nenávratně mizely. S tím, jak jsme shromažďovali exponáty, se k nám dostávala celá řada dokladů o dlouhodobém vedení velice moderní výroby automobilky. Pocit lítosti a touha tak slavnou historii uchovat nás přivedly k rozhodnutí založit Automuzeum Praga. Na jaké exponáty jste nejvíce hrdí?

V roce 1998 jste vydali knižní formou historii automobilky Praga k jejímu devadesátiletému výročí. Vzniklo také DVD o historii značky Praga a muzea. Chystáte v současné době nějaký další podobný projekt? Na základě nově zahájené spolupráce se společností Praga - Export, která má k naší velké radosti mimořádný zájem o zachování historie naší slavné značky, chceme společně připravit pokračování knihy o historii automobilky z let 1998 – 2012.

V květnu letošního roku jsme jako poděkování za dlouholetou spolupráci a podporu pozvali na setkání všechny přátele a příznivce Automuzea Praga. Akce se zúčastnilo 200 významných hostů včetně primátora Prahy, generálního ředitele technického muzea, prezidenta Autoklubu ČR a zástupců tisku a televize. Při této příležitosti jsme s velkou radostí převzali od společnosti Praga -Export poslední vyrobený motocykl, motokáru a závodní automobil Praga R4S, který je jedním z prvních kusů obnovené výroby pod slavnou značkou Praga. Věříme, že pokračování moderní výroby pod světově známou značkou se bude rozvíjet a najde si své příznivce. My k tomu nabízíme důkazy o tradici a historii slavné automobilky a věříme, že vzájemná spolupráce obou stran přinese úspěchy. •

V květnu jste oslavili 55. výročí založení Automuzea Praga. Současně na tento rok připadá 105. výročí vzniku samotné značky Praga a Vy navíc letos slavíte významné životní jubileum. Vnímáte tedy tento rok pro Vás jako velmi významný? Souhra těchto významných dat a také nově zahájená spolupráce se společností Praga – Export činí z tohoto roku rok pro nás velmi radostný a úspěšný.

Hrdí jsme na každý nový model vozu, který ve sbírce přibude. A nejen na vozy, ale i na každý dokument a materiál doplňující kompletnost celé kolekce. Mění se nějak výrazně v průběhu let zájem veřejnosti o návštěvu vašeho muzea? Od založení muzea uplynulo více než půl století intenzivní a cílevědomé práce. Celá sbírka se rok od roku díky své stále vyšší kompletnosti stávala stále zajímavější a zajímavější pro širokou veřejnost. Celebrating the 105th Anniversary of Praga Oslava 105. výročí vzniku značky Praga

n the 19th of May in Prague, Czech Republic, Opetalova Street was bursting at the seams. The 105th anniversary of Praga was held in front of the Automobile Club for the Czech Republic Autoclub’s 6th meeting of historical cars. The event was organized by the Association of Veteran Car Clubs of Czech Republic and the Veteran Praga Car Club, which presented visitors with a diverse program. In addition to tours of historic vehicles from Praga and other brands, visitors also enjoyed the performances of majorettes and contemporary police and gendarmerie. And of course, the new Praga made an appearance as well. Beautiful hostesses in the brand’s colors introduced visitors to the Praga Dragon racing kart, Praga R4S racing car, and Praga’s future star – the new racing car model Praga R1. Brand enthusiasts were captivated by the new Praga, especially in combination with the surrounding people dressed in period attire and the complementing atmosphere of contemporary live music. •

Na akci pořádané Asociací Veteran Car Clubů Autoklubu České republiky a Veteran Car Clubem Praga v AČR čekal návštěvníky bohatý program. Kromě prohlídky celé řady historických vozidel značky Praga i dalších si mohli užít také vystoupení mažoretek či dobovou ukázku činnosti policie a četnictva. V neposlední řadě pak na srazu nechyběly nové Pragovky. Krásné hostesky v barvách značky představily návštěvníkům současný závodní vůz Praga R4S a motokáry Praga a také zářnou budoucnost značky - model nového závodního vozu Praga R1. Nové Pragovky vyvolaly mezi příznivci značky opravdové pozdvižení, zvláště v kombinaci s kolem se hemžícími příznivci historických vozů v prvorepublikovém oblečení a atmosférou dotvářející dobovou živou hudbou. •

FEATURE Visitors were treated to the wonderful sounds of live music, locals dressed in period attire, and performances by the majorettes. Návštěvníci si mohli užít skvělou živou muziku, atmosféru umocněnou lidmi oblečenými do prvorepublikového oblečení a vidět vystoupení mažoretek.

The race featured drivers from both the factory team (Praga Kart) and junior team (Praga Sumako), and even a special appearance from factory team technical manager Alessandro Manetti! In KZ2, Praga covered the podium, with Adam Janous (1st), Martin Doubek (2nd), and Alessandro Manetti

(3rd) taking the top 3 places. KF2 saw Polish driver Karol Dabski with a 3rd place finish, while Czech driver Marek Machulda took 1st in the Cadet category. Praga also dominated the KF3 category, with its drivers taking the top 5 places! Here’s a look at some amazing photos from the weekend. •

Style meets style, as Czech top model and former Miss World Tana Kucharova does an exclusive photo campaign for the Praga brand.

n the last issue we brought you a special poster with Miss World Tana Kucharova, but what does it take to make a photo shoot? We’ve got a behind-the-scenes look at just that, as the

top model posed with the stars of the Praga brand: the Praga Dragon kart chassis, the Praga R4S, and Praga Aviation’s executive plane. As the new face of the Praga brand, Kucharova is very delighted: “I am very pleased to cooperate with the Praga brand. This is a brand with a deep tradition, which is now newly entering into public awareness in relation to motorsports, and becomes a brand of which our country can be proud.” Shooting for new campaign took place at the Vodochody Airport in Prague, Czech Republic, and was styled by a top team of professionals led by Matus Toth and Ivana Tokarska. •

Praga France The company Acti-Kart has reprised the role of Praga chassis importer in France in February 2012. Since then, it has put into place a solid network of dealers, with no less than 11 throughout the French territory. SARL LKS was born in 1994, under the direction of its boss Jerome Laville, himself a karting pilot from 1984 to 1998, competing in both national and international championships. “Today, we are excited to work with Praga, who have proven their seriousness and competitiveness in all areas” says Jerome Laville. •

Praga France Race Kid Academy La Praga France Race Kid Academy Praga France decided to create a training center for young pilots from ages 6 to 13. It is under the responsibility of Wilfrid Cazot who is the team manager. He has put in place a structure which integrates driver training, understanding trajectories, security, breaking, and comprehending the rules and techniques of the courses. The Race Kid academy benefits from a track with perfect design adapted to the minikart and cadet karts. The structure is situated between Nimes and Ales a St Chaptes, and already hosted the French Minikart Championship in 2011, and had one of its pilots on the podium in 2012. •

Praga France a décidé de créer son centre de formation pour les jeunes pilotes de 6 à 13 ans. C’est sous la responsabilité de Wilfrid Cazot qui est le manager du team. Il a été mise en place une structure qui intègre, formation au pilotage, compréhension des trajectoires, sécurité, freinages, connaissance du règlement et techniques de courses. La Race Kid academy bénéficie d’une piste avec tracé parfaitement adapté aux karts de type minikart et minimes/cadets. Ask for training on an empty track or during minimally-used times. Novice drivers can learn how to properly control the kart without the worry of interfering with other drivers.

• Under the supervision of an experienced professional, either a driver or mechanic • Introductory training should take place in a calm atmosphere with plenty of time, so the driver is able to process new ideas

Trainer should explain the following skills: Kart control, acceleration, braking, cornering, proper positioning in seat. It is also important to learn the rules and theory: signaling equipment and flags, starting formation, etc. , and driving techniques for the entire track and its individual parts.

On the track

Trainers should assist drivers with above skills, as well as watching how they take corners, showing them the ideal positioning based on style of track and pointing out where they should have braked. Repeat training at least 3 times, reviewing what was covered in previous sessions to gradually improve techniques. Final trainings should include other drivers on the track, because karting is a contact sport and orientation among other drivers is an important skill.

• Nejlépe pod dohledem zkušené osoby – jezdce nebo mechanika. • Celý seznamovací trénink by měl probíhat v klidné atmosféře a s dostatkem času, aby měl začínající jezdec možnost zpracovat všechny pro něho nové podněty.

Vedoucí tréninku by měl poskytnout vysvětlení následujících činností: Ovládání motokáry, akceleraci, brzdění, zatáčení, správný posed jezdce v motokáře. Důležité je také absolvovat vysvětlení pravidel a teorie, signalizačního zařízení a vlajek, startovního procesu apod., jezdeckých technik pro celou dráhu a její jednotlivé části.

Na dráze

Trenéři by měli jezdcům poskytnout asistenci na dráze, sledovat je při průjezdech zatáčkami a ukázat jim ideální stopu a styl průjezdu, stejně jako místa, kde by měli brzdit. Trénink opakovat alespoň třikrát a vždy probrat, co bylo na pořadu těch předchozích, aby tak docházelo k postupnému zlepšování techniky. Finální tréninky by měly proběhnout i za účasti jiných jezdců na trati, protože karting je kontaktní sport a orientace v jezdeckém poli patří mezi důležité dovednosti jezdce.

World Champion Bas Lammers shares one of his earliest karting experiences

hen I got my first go-kart, I had just started driving karts and so I was terribly unprepared. I didn’t have any proper equipment, so I used a motor cross helmet, motor cross shoes, and motor cross gloves. Eventually, I got a better racing suit and gloves especially for karting, but I still didn’t have proper racing shoes, so I had to use my motor cross shoes. One Saturday afternoon at a track near my hometown, one of my father’s best friends made a deal with us while we were sitting at the bar. He said, “If by tomorrow Bas can complete one lap under 40.00 seconds, I will give him a pair of racing shoes.” So my father said to him, “We have a deal!” I drove all day on Sunday, from 7 o’clock in the morning until 8 o’clock in the evening. Believe me, I did so many laps that day, at night when I was sleeping I dreamt I was still driving on the track! And at exactly at 7:58 in the evening, I did my best time ever on this track, 39.97 seconds. The man who promised to give me the shoes said to me, “Well done Bas, you have earned these new racing shoes.” I was so happy; that was the moment my karting career started, and now I am where I am now. I’m very proud of that day, and it is something that I will remember always. •

Věřte mi, že jsem ujel tolik kol, že v noci, když jsem spal, se mi zdálo, že pořád kroužím po okruhu. A přesně v 19:58 jsem dosáhl svého nejlepšího času na tomto okruhu - 39.97 vteřin. Otcův přítel, který mi slíbil boty, mi řekl: „Dobrá práce, Basi, zasloužil sis tyhle nové závodní boty.“ Byl jsem tak šťastný. Tohle byl ten moment, kdy začala má kartingová kariéra a teď jsem tam, kde jsem. Jsem na ten den hrozně hrdý a je to něco, na co nikdy nezapomenu.” •
