raga fans and racing enthusiasts, Here at Praga, we’re gearing up for what’s sure to be an exciting season.

With several new projects being launched, and even more in the pipeline, the Praga family is ever expanding and growing. Our feature in this issue is about just that: Praga has embarked on a new venture, a partnership with Lotus on an LMP2 car for the FIA World Endurance Championship, the result of which you can see on the cover. In the news section, the Praga R1 goes head to head with Audi in a track test with interesting results. The karting side is all about ROTAX, where our teams and drivers are conquering podiums around the globe, and Praga was chosen as one of the official partners for the highly anticipated Grand Finals event in New Orleans. There’s an interview with one of the factory team’s newest (and youngest) drivers, Marino Sato, and we introduce you to our distributor from “down under”, IPKarting Australia and New Zealand. We also take a look at the new IAME engines for 2013, and go behind the scenes to learn how Praga is cooperating with GoPro to take racing videos to the next level. ážení fanoušci Pragy a závodění, S několika novými projekty se zde v Pragovce připravujeme na jistě velmi zajímavou sezonu. Rosteme, a rozšiřujeme své pole působnosti. Toto číslo je věnováno především spojení s Lotusem na projektu LMP2 autapro FIA World Endurance Šampionát, a výsledek můžete vidět na naší titulce. V nové sekci se Praga R1 setká na testování s Audi s velmi zajímavými výsledky. Co se kartingu týče, je toto číslo věnováno Rotaxům, kde naše týmy a závodníci sklízejí pódiové úspěchy kolem celého světa. Zároveň byla právě Praga vybrána jako oficiální partner pro „Grand Finals“ v New Orleans. Co se závodění týče, Praga se spojila s Lotusem na projektu LMP2 auto, které se zúčastní FIA Světového Endurance Šampionátu.

Dále se Praga R1 utkala s Audi na testovaní, a výsledky byly více než zajímavé.

he German magazine Auto Bild recently held a testing of the new Praga R1 vs. the Audi R8 V10, and the results were, needless to say, impressive. The testing took place at the Slovakiaring track in Dunejska Streda, 40 km outside of Bratislava. The track, at 5922 meters long, is one of the longest and most varied circuits in Europe. But that didn’t stop the Praga R1, which outperformed the Audi in all sectors of the track, including sector 3, where power is especially important. The Audi’s best lap time was 2:25,79 min, while the R1 came in at 2:13,02 min., almost 12 seconds faster. To learn more about how you can test the Praga R1, visit www.pragaracing.eu. •

ěmecký magazín Auto Bild nedávno zorganizoval testování nové Pragy R1 versus Audi R8 V10, a výsledky byly více než zajímavé. Testování proběhlo na okruhu Slovakiaringu v Dunajské Strede, která se nachází 40km od Bratislavy. Dráha, která měří 5922 metrů, je jednou z nejdelších a nejrozmanitějších v Evropě. Tento fakt, nicméně nezastavil Pragu R1, která převálcovala Audi ve všech sektorech okruhu, včet-

I

n a fantastic finish to the Florida Winter Tour, the Praga/Goodwood Kartways team brought in 3 podiums over two race days. Praga Technical Manager Alessandro Manetti, racing DD2 Masters, took 1st place in the Saturday final, while Goodwood DD2 pilot/team manager Marco Di Leo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively at the weekend.

Going into the weekend, Di Leo was P4 and P3 in the qualifyings, while Manetti was P2 and P1. In Saturday’s pre-finals, Manetti took P2 and Di Leo took P4, but both pulled out the stops for the final, with Manetti bringing in a victory and Di Leo an impressive 2nd place. Sunday’s races took place under wet conditions, which forced Manetti to retire in the final due to technical problems. Di Leo was luckier, with a P1 finish in the pre-final and 3rd in the final, during a torrential downpour. Goodwood also had Praga driver Austin Riley competing in his first race in the

Rotax Junior class. With a goal to make it to both finals, that goal was met and Austin drove an impressive run in his first outing in this very competitive class.

In the end, Di Leo was second in the championship, earning him Goodwood’s first, but hopefully not last, ticket to the ROTAX Grand Finals in NOLA this year. •

antastický konec Floridského „Winter Tour“ Praga/ Goodwood Kartways tým získal 3 pódiové vítězství v průběhu 2 závodních dnů. Technický manažer Pragy Alessandro Manetti, který se zúčastnil DD2

Mistrů, obsadil první pozici v sobotním finále, zatímco manažer týmu Marco Di Leo, Goodwood DD2 pilot/ zakončil na druhé a třetí pozici v průběhu víkendu. Podíváme-li se na průběh víkendu, Di Leo byl čtvrtý a třetí v kvalifikaci, a Manetti byl druhý a třetí.

V sobotním před finále se Manetti umístil na

druhé pozici, zatímco Di Leo na čtvrté, ale oba udělali vše, co bylo v jejich silách a Manetti se tak stal vítězem a Di Leo dojel jako druhý. Nedělní závod probíhal za mokrých podmínek, což kvůli technickým potížím donutilo Manettiho předčasně ukončit finále.

Di Leo měl větší štěstí a v před finále obsadil první místo, a celkově tak dojel jako třetí.

Další závodník Goodwoodu, Austin Riley startoval v Rotax Junior třídě s cílem dojet obě finále. Toto se podařilo a Austin si vedl velmi obstojně v této těžké třídě. Celkově si Di Leo vysloužil druhé místo v šampionátu, čímž si pro tento rok zajistil svůj první lístek do Rotax Grand Finals v NOLA. Di Leo říká „Jsem nesmírně šťasten, že jsem si vysloužil lístek do Grand Finals.

Byl to můj první šampionát v DD2 a zajet ho úspěšně a kvalifikovat se tak do Grand Finals, je hodně uspokojující“. •

n the first race of the Praga Czech Championship, now sponsored by Praga, the Praga drivers were out in full force, taking some very important podiums and placements in the national series. In the KF2 class, Jakub Lojan and Vojtěch Strnadel , both racing for the Praga Czech Racing team, took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. In KF3, Filip Klier, Praga driver for Klier Karel KMT, took the top podium

place (1st) in the highly competitive class.

Even Praga owner, Petr Ptacek, who competed in the KZ2 Master class, took away a 2nd place victory in the weekend’s racing.

The next race for the Praga Czech Championship will take place in Vysoke Myto, Czech Republic, from 11-12 May. •

Praga and Lotus have partnered up to participate in the entire 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship, including the legendary Le Mans race.

hey enter the series with two Lotus/ Praga T128 LMP2 powered by Praga engines and three drivers with Formula 1 experience were already confirmed: Vitantonio Liuzzi, James Rossiter, and Jan Charouz, along with Kevin Weeda, Dominik Kraihamer, and Thomas Holzer. Charouz has already started six times at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, and raced until the chequered flag in all six attempts. In 2009, he was the winner of the Le Mans Series Championship.

The main technological brain to develop the Lotus T128 Praga was Romulus Kolles, and the men behind the idea of the project are Patrick Louis (Lotus F1 Team Chief Executive), Antonín Charouz (Charouz Gravity Racing manager) and Petr Ptáček (Praga owner). In terms of race car development it

is a joint venture partnership. This year, the Lotus T128 will run with the Praga engine.

The LMP2 project is not the end of this cooperation. Praga also have plans for 2014 when they want to achieve the homologation for the royal LMP1 class car.

OTAX is without a doubt one of the largest racing series in the world, with ROTAX MAX Challenge races taking place on almost every continent. And while the Praga brand is most famously known for its factory

team that competes throughout Europe, they are hitting the track with ROTAX in a big way. Former World Champion Alessandro Manetti jumped back into the kart this year to compete in DD2 Masters, Praga was chosen as the official chassis for the DD2 Masters class at this year’s ROTAX Grand Finals in New Orleans, and DD2 driver, the Canadian Marco Di Leo, has already earned a coveted ticket to the worlds.

Add to that the impact Praga is having around the globe at national and international ROTAX races, and you can definitely see that Praga is diving head first into the challenge that is ROTAX.

Rotax je bezpochyby jednou z největších závodních sérií na světě, vezmeme-li v potaz, že ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE se jezdí téměř na každém kontinentě. Zatím, co je Praga známá především v Evropě, nyní se zapojila do ROTAXU ve velkém. Bývalý mistr světa Alessandro Manetti totiž naskočil do Praga motokáry, a začal závodit v DD2 Master. lessandro Manetti is a multiple world champion driver, and the Technical Manager for the Praga Kart Racing team. So when he decided he wanted to get back on the track, the choice was obvious. But why did Manetti decide to race ROTAX, in the DD2 Masters class? “After 4 years of not driving, I felt it was time to get back into a kart. Marco Di Leo (Praga’s North American importer and also DD2 driver for the Goodwood team) asked if I would come to the US to race with them at the Florida Winter Tour. We decided on the DD2 Masters class since Di Leo was already competing in DD2, and we wanted to represent Praga across all classes.” So far, Manetti has competed in the last two rounds of the Florida Winter Tour.

He took the podium 3 times in 4 races, including a first place finish in race 5 at Ocala Gran Prix. And he plans to continue racing in other ROTAX series throughout the season. So what does the champion driver think about racing ROTAX? “I’m really enjoying racing the ROTAX class. It was quite a change from what I was used to, but I took to it quickly and really found myself to be a strong driver.” Beyond racing, Manetti is using this time to work on improving the chassis for the ROTAX categories. An important aspect, given that it’s one of the biggest categories, and a strong market for the factory. “ROTAX takes place all around the world and has the most drivers of any category,” says Manetti. “Because of this, everyone is investing a lot in ROTAX, and Praga is no different.”

Ale proč právě závodit v DD2 třídě Rotaxu? „Po čtyř leté pauze od závodění jsem cítil, že je čas vrátit se do motokáry. Marco Di Leo (importér Pragy pro Severní Ameriku a zároveň jezdec kategorie DD2 za Goodwood tým) se mě zeptal, jestli bych nepřijel do Ameriky zazávodit si s ním na Florida Winter Tour. Dohodli jsme se, že pojedeme třídu DD2, ve které Di Leo již závodí, a chtěli jsme reprezentovat Pragu po celém světě.“ Doposud se Manetti postavil na startovní čáru v posledních dvou kolech ve Florida Winter Tour, a získal hned tři pódiové vítězství, včetně prvního místa v pátém závodě v Ocala Gran Prix, a plánuje nadále závodit v ostatních ROTAX sérií v průběhu sezony. Co si tedy šampion myslí o závodění v ROTAXU? „Opravdu si to užívám, je to trochu změna od toho, na co jsem byl zvyklý, ale zapojil jsem se velmi rychle, a zjistil, že jsem silný jezdec v této kategorii“. Mimo závodění, Manetti věnuje svůj čas na zlepšování podvozků pro ROTAX kategorie, což je bezpochyby velmi důležité, neboť je to jedna z největších a nejsilnějších kategorií na trhu. „ROTAX se jezdí po celém světě, a má nejvíce závodníků všech kategorií“, říká Manetti. „Právě kvůli tomu, všichni investují do ROTAXU, a Praga není výjimkou“.

A Big Ticket to the Worlds

raga has earned what could be considered the golden ticket of ROTAX, being chosen as one of the official chassis partners for the 2013 ROTAX Grand Finals, in the DD2 Masters class. Working together with the IPK factory in Italy, Praga’s North American importer, Goodwood Kartways, will be overseeing all the organizational and technical arrangements for the race, which will take place at the NOLA Motorsports Park in Louisiana, USA. Goodwood will not only be at the Grand Finals, but manager Marco Di Leo will be racing as well, having earned the team their first ticket to the worlds at the Florida Winter Tour. At the final round in Florida, a second-place finish in Saturday’s final brought him exactly tied for the second qualifying ticket with European star Xen De Ruwe and the pair then had a head-to-head showdown on Sunday with the Grand Finals spot up as a reward. Said Di Leo, “Despite winning the pre-final and then starting from pole, I was a bit nervous after a sudden © Coopers Photography downfall of rain and having to lead the field out but it was incredibly satisfying, to say the least, to keep Xen behind me and score another podium and the trip to New Orleans.”

Around the Globe

n New Zealand, Praga drivers lead all four of the main Rotax ranking categories with Daniel Kinsman (Rotax Max Light), Dylan Drysdale (Junior Max) and Brendon Hart (Rotax Max Heavy) securing ongoing success aboard the distinctive blue chassis.

Similarly in Australia, national champion and number one Rotax racer is hugely experienced technical driver, Troy Woolston (Rotax Heavy). Both Kinsman and Woolston expect to line up once again at the Max Challenge World Finals, returning to build on prior success and experience in the international arena.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Praga’s German and Austrian teams are also leading the way in Rotax. In the German RMC, Luis Glania is currently in 1st place (Rotax Junior) as well as Maikel Splithoff (Rotax Senior). And Christopher Friedrich, one of the best Rotax drivers at the moment in DD2 and Senior Max, will also be driving

DD2 at Supernationals this year. In Austria, Simon Wagner is the current leader in DD2, under Praga, and also holds the new track record. We’re hoping to see some of these drivers at the World Finals as well.

V Německu RMC, Rotaxový junior, jezdec Luis Glania je momentálně na první pozici, stejně jako jeho kolega z Rotax senior Maikel Splithoff. Jeden z nejlepších Rotax závodníku ve třídě DD2 a Senior Max, Christopher Friedrich, se také tento rok zúčastní Supernationals. V Rakousku je hlavním Praga jezdcem v kategorii DD2 Simon Wagner, a stále si drží nový závodní rekord.

Praga is On Track for Success in Australia and New Zealand On the other side of the globe, Praga is taking the track by storm, under the direction of IPKarting Australia and New Zealand. IPKarting Australia and New Zealand is backed by a group of people who are passionate about karting, but who have also worked at the top of the action sports industry for more than 25 years. Their background gives them experience in managing events, athletes, and brands in the skateboarding, motocross racing, wakeboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross realms. However, over the past 10 years their focus has shifted to the sport of kart racing.

Outstanding New Zealand driving talent Daniel Kinsman has achieved four-time National Championship success and is racing between both Australia and New Zealand throughout the year as a Praga global ambassador. 20-year old Daniel is the first driver to be accepted into the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy in 2011 and follows in the footsteps of New Zealand’s top kart export, Josh Hart, who is also aligned with Praga and is forging a success-

ful career with Josh Hart Racing. And the future for Praga is also looking bright, with an abundance of young talent emerging from the Junior ranks, Liam McLellan, Jordan Boys, Zane Morse, and Dylan Drysdale, who are all hungry for long-term race success.

In the last issue we went through important points related to the physical and mental condition of the driver. In this issue we will focus on how to improve the driver’s technical skills.

Technical Education of the Driver

Technické vzdělávání jezdce

A driver’s knowledge in technical areas is another important point in achieving excellent results. If the driver is capable, through technical knowledge about the equipment and how it functions, to inform the mechanic of the kart’s behavior, this creates the ideal situation for successful adjustment.

Znalosti jezdce v oblasti techniky jsou dalším významným bodem k dosažení vynikajících výsledků. Pokud je jezdec schopen díky znalosti techniky a principů jejího fungování, informovat svého mechanika o chování závodní motokáry je to ideální situace pro její úspěšné nastavení.

A driver should have comprehensive technical knowledge, in particular in the following areas: • The functionality of the chassis • The functionality of the engine • The functionality of the tires

Technické vzdělání jezdce by mělo být komplexní a to zejména v následujících bodech: • Technická znalost funkčnosti podvozku • Technická znalost funkčnosti motoru • Technická znalost funkčnosti pneumatik

These individual items are intertwined, and thus ensure a driver can correctly evaluate their driving. Many drivers have a tendency to look for the cause of slow driving in either the wrong equipment function or in the engine power. However, if the driver has technical knowledge of the items below, they can optimize the kart’s settings and concentrate on improving their own driving performance.

Chassis Functionality

If the chassis is set up incorrectly, you may experience a differential on the track of up to 1 second, compared to the optimal setting.

Funkčnost podvozku

Pokud je podvozek nesprávně nastaven, může dosahovat rozdíl na trati oproti optimálnímu nastavení až 1 sekundu.

Engine Functionality

If the engine is in good technical condition and has a properly adjusted carburetor, the differences between a peak and average engine are about 2-4 tenths of a second.

Funkčnost motoru

Pokud je motor v dobrém technickém stavu a má správně nastaven karburátor, jsou rozdíly mezi špičkovým a průměrným motorem několik desetin sekundy 2-4.

Tire Functionality

If the tires are improperly inflated, the difference on the track can amount to several tenths of a second (2-4).

Funkčnost pneumatik Pokud jsou pneumatiky nesprávně nahuštěné, může rozdíl na trati činit až několik desetin sekundy 2-4.

These figures are approximate and are intended only as a guide for novice drivers for where to look for reserves. If there are greater differences in times, then the driver should look to improve their driving techniques. They are also intended to enable drivers to know which reserves they can use, in order to understand how to best take advantage of their technique during the race.

Tyto údaje jsou orientační a mají sloužit pouze pro představu začínajícím jezdcům, kde je třeba hledat rezervy. Pokud jsou rozdíly v dosažených časech ještě větší, tak se jedná vždy jednoznačně o jezdecké chyby. Také mají sloužit k tomu, aby si jezdci uvědomili, jaké rezervy můžou tím, že budou rozumět technice při závodech využít.

The New IAME Engines

Reedster 3

he Reedster3 derives straight from the experience achieved with the Reedster2. The third homologation receives (in its KF configuration) important improvements in the exhaust valve, the most sensible component related to performance.

The other main features of the Reedster3 reprise all the winning characteristics developed through the past three years of experience with its successful predecessor, the Reedster2.

The new valve is a “double slide� type with progressive opening, it improves performance at both low and mid revs.

The crankcase has been improved with a new reed valve block, still in horizontal position, but inserted in a specific support that can be removed from the crankcase. This new feature allows an easier introduction of new solutions of the reed valve block position and therefore an easier development process.

A new specific oil seal (double lip) has been introduced on the water pump shaft to improve sealing among the gears chamber, that contains oil, and the cooling circuit. The new oil seal paired with the pump shaft treated with a ceramic coating, ensures a long lasting and stable sealing. The totally renewed Bendix lodgement is now completely removable, allowing easier and faster access and avoiding the complete removal of other starting components. This new solution allows the removal of the Bendix, even with the engine mounted on the chassis.

The main bearings and the water pump side countershaft bearing are now rollers type, yet from the production (except a different need) and ensure far more load capacity and long life compared to the balls type. Furthermore, as the main bearings are actively involved in the alignment of the crankshaft, with the rollers type introduction, a much better fluency is also guaranteed. •

Parilla Screamer he Parilla Screamer is the new benchmark for KZ categories. It contains all the reliability, precise machining, and durability established by its predecessor, with new improvements in the cylinder that enhance the performance.

The gearbox preserves maximum fluency with neutral gears running on roller cages, and compared to the previous model, has introduced two different gears. The primary pair is built with straight rectified toothing to reduce at lowest the loss of power due to friction, and the dry clutch keeps the cone spring to improve the smoothness of engagement.

The cylinder and cylinder head have been totally revised. The cylinder is now coated with a nickel-silicium lining and has improved exhaust and transfer ducts, derived directly from the experience achieved in the past sporting season.

The cylinder head is now detachable, comprising the head cover and combustion chamber; this solution allows an improved resistance to detonation and an easier development of this component.

The crankshaft has been totally re-engineered and features new characteristics of balancing and inertia aimed to magnify the new features of the cylinder. Due to its design, the new crankshaft properties can be easily modified with the insertion of different material and dimension tabs. Furthermore, the new design of the crankshaft considerably improves stiffness, with the result of increased fluency.

The new inlet conveyor group allows a closer positioning of the carburettor to the cylinder, with benefits in quickness and response at high revs.

The new exhaust plant completes the innovations of the Screamer, allowing for considerable step forward achieved in maximum power and wideness of output. •
