Monforts has installed and commissioned a new Montex finishing range at the Baltic Works of Halley StevensonsinDundee,Scotland, tofurtherboosttheweatherproofingspecialist'shighlyflexibleoperations.
Scottish weatherproofing specialist Halley Stevensons has considerably expanded its options with the new Monforts line.
The range, with a working width of two metres, was built at the Montex assembly plant in Austria and consists of a Montex®Coat coating unit in knife execution for paste and foam coating and a Montex 85006Fstenter.
Uniqueknow-how Founded in 1864, Halley Stevensons has amassed unique technical know-how and manufacturing experience in the art of waxed cotton for weatherproofed fabrics and is able to provide international orders in custom colours and finishes to very low minimum quantities where required. The company exports worldwide and its premium brand customers include Belstaff, Barbours, Filson and J.Crew.
“Our team of skilled technicians is constantly striving to develop and refine new and existing products in terms of colour, handle and performance and we regularlydesignandbuildourownbespokemachinery to give us optimum manufacturing capabilities,” says ManagingDirectorJamesCampbell.
The new range draws on all of the latest advances and technical expertise of Monforts gained from countless installations around the world, allowing Halley Stevensons to pigment dye, direct coat and pad apply finishesandofferingmorescopeforR&D.
Lifeblood “R&Disthelifebloodofourbusiness,”saysCampbell. “Thepreciseprocesscontrolfunctionsofthelinegive our technicians confidence to make new products as well as finely tuning the energy requirements of existing products. We love the fact that we can record the energy used on each production batch and use this forcontinualimprovementsandefficiencysavings. The touchscreensoftwareisvisualandeasytouse, moving from one screen to another to check the various parametersofprocessing.”
The range has replaced one of the company’s older stenter/coating lines and has already enabled Halley Stevensons to recreate various products with lower coating applications at higher speeds than was previouslypossible.
“Many refinements have been made to the Montex ® Coat in the past few years, resulting in higher coating accuracy and the resulting quality of the treated fabrics,” says Monforts engineer for textile technologies Alexander Fitz, who has been working withHalleyStevensonsoncommissioningoftherange and new product trials. “Monforts is the only manufacturer to offer completely integrated coating lines from a single source and the coating machine is tailoredtothesubsequentMontexdryingtechnology–withallthebenefitsresultingfromfullyintegratedplc control.”

“Sincewelastpurchasedastenter, theadvancementof thetechnologyontheMontexhasbeenvast, especially in burner and air extraction,” adds Campbell. “The machine is also very robust – especially the chains, whichneedverylittlelubricationandwilllastusalong time. We have been pleasantly surprised how quickly we can move from say, a 100gsm fabric to a 600gsm fabric, withnorequirementtoadjusttensions.”
Sailclothheritage
Waxedcottonwasoriginallydevelopedbysailorsinthe early 15th century when Scottish North Sea herring fleets began treating flax sailcloth with fish oils and greaseinanattempttowaterprooftheirsails.Remnants of these sails were used by the sailors as capes to withstandthehighwindsandseaspray.
By the mid 1850s, sailcloth was being treated with linseedoil, butwhileinitiallyhighlyeffective, itwould yellow and stiffen through weathering over time and eventuallyloseitswaterproofingqualities.
In the years that followed, various treatments were applied to cottons in an attempt to find the most effective weatherproofing solution, and the combination of densely-woven cotton impregnated withaparaffinwaxedcoatingprovedmostsuccessful. For over 150 years, Halley Stevensons created many different variations of both woven constructions and finishing treatments and now supplies thousands of metres of waxed cotton every year, with each roll producedtocustomspecifications.
Durability
“The beauty of waxed cotton is its durability and longevity,”saysCampbell.“Thefabricsarebreathable,
with the wax adjusting to ambient temperatures to be softerandmorebreathableinwarmweatherandstiffer andmorewindproofincoldconditions.”
While traditional waxes are petroleum or paraffin based,HalleyStevensonshasalwaysbeencomfortable aboutusingawasteproductfromindustryandreusingit tomakeproductsthatlastalifetime.

The company has also recently launched a new 100% plant-based wax – Ever Wax Olive –consisting of a blend of olive oil, rape seed and castor bean with comparable waterrepellence to petroleum and a far betterratingthanothernaturalwaxeswhichhavecome beforeit.
Benchmark
“The high tradition of skills and fabric innovation imposed by our original guildsmen is still our benchmark standard of honest workmanship today,” Campbell concludes “We use responsibly sourced cotton fabrics and processes that are gentle to the productandlowimpacttotheenvironment.Ourdyeing methodsuseverylowlevelsofwaterandourwaxesare simply heated up for application and cooled down to store when not in use, meaning no waste discharges. Recent years have seen an acceleration in trade relationsbetweenSwitzerlandandIndonesia, whichin 2008wasclassedasoneofeightprioritycountriesfor economic development cooperation by SECO, the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs, with a joint economic and trade commission established the followingyear.
Collaboration was heightened further in 2018 with a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) for Indonesia with Switzerland and the other EFTA countries. This more extensive form of free trade agreement was accepted after a popular referendum, and ultimately came into force in November2021.
Trading between the two countries is supported by SERV, the Swiss export risk insurance organisation. This insures export goods against political and commercialrisksandfacilitatescredit.
The Swiss Textile Machinery Association is the representative body for Switzerland’s producers of textileequipment,systems,andservices.Currently43 companies are affiliated, offering solutions covering the entire textile value chain, from spinning to weaving, knitting, finishing, embroidery, and quality control. The Association is an industry sector of Swissmem, the national representative body for technologycompanies.

Last month, when gas wholesale prices reached the recordlevelof340€/MWh1–triggeringalsosky-high electricity prices – the European textiles industry called on the European Union to adopt a wholesale price cap for gas, the revision of the merit-order principle in the electricity market, support for SMEs and a single European strategy. On 14 September 2022,ontheoccasionoftheStateoftheUnionaddress by President Von der Leyen, the Commission announced initiatives aimed at tackling the dramatic energycrisisthattheEuropeisfacing.
We,theEuropeanassociationsrepresentingthewhole textiles’ ecosystem, welcome these proposals by the Commission to change the TTF benchmark parametersanddecoupletheTTFfromtheelectricity marketandtherevisionofthemerit-orderprinciplefor the electricity market, which is no longer serving the purposeitwasdesignedfor.
Wealsowelcometheproposaltoamendthestate-aid frameworkthat, inourview, shouldincludethetextiles finishing, the textiles services and the nonwoven sectors as well as a simplification of the application requirements. Furthermore, we call for a uniform implementationacrosstheEU.
However, we acknowledge that the Commission proposallacksinambitionand–ifconfirmed–itwill comeatthecostoflosingEuropeanindustrialcapacity and European jobs. Ultimately, Europe will remain withoutitsintegratedtextilesecosystem, asweknowit today, and no mean to translate into reality the EU textiles strategy, for more sustainable and circular textilesproducts.

on the wholesale price of natural gas is absolutely necessary.Europeisrunningoutoftimetosaveits ownindustry.Itisnowtimetoactswiftly, decisively in unity and solidarity at European level. We understand a very high price cap has been so far discussedamongMinistriesandthatisnotreassuring for companies across Europe: if any cap is, as expected, above 100/MWh, these businesses will collapse.
AlreadyinMarch2022,withEUgaswholesaleprices at 200€/MWh, the business case for keeping textiles production was no longer there. To date, natural gas wholesale prices have reached the level of 340€/MWh2,morethan15timeshighercomparedto 20213 ! Currently, many businesses have suspended theirproductionprocessestoavoidthelossoftensof thousands of euros every day. We hope this will not becomethenewnormaland–toreducethelikelihood ofsuchascenario–wecallontheCommission, the EU Council and the Parliament to swiftly adopt decisive, impactful and concrete actions to tackle the energy crisis and ensure the survival of the Europeanindustry.
Given the dire internationalcompetitionin which the EUtextilesindustryoperates, itisnotpossibletojust pass on the increased costs to consumers. Yet, with thesesky-highprices,ourcompaniescannotaffordto absorb those costs. The EU textiles companies are mainlySMEsthatdonothavethefinancialstructureto absorb such a shock. In contrast with such reality in Europe, thewholesalepriceofgasintheUSandChina is 10€/MWh, whereas in Turkey the price is 25€/MWh. If the EU does not act, our international competitors will easily replace us in the market, resulting in the de industrialisation of Europe and a worsened reliance on foreign imports of essential products.
Specific segments of the textile industry are particularlyvulnerable:
•Theman-madefibres(MMF)industryforinstanceis an energy intensive sector and a major consumer of natural gas and electricity in the manufacturing of its fibres. Not only is it being affected by higher energy process, it is also experiencing shortages and sharply risingcostsofitsrawmaterials.
•Forthenonwovenssegment, productionprocesses–whichusebothfibresandfilamentsextrudedinsitu–are also highly dependent on gas and electricity. Polymersmeltingandextrusion, fibrescarding, webforming, web-bonding and drying are energyintensive techniques. Nonwoven materials can be found in many applications crucial to citizens like in healthcare(facemasks)orautomotive(batteries).
•Italsoistobenotedthatforsomesegmentstheuseof gas has no technological substitute: for example, the dyeing and finishing production units make very intense use of gas. These production units are mainly composed by boilers and driers, which only work on gasandthereisnoalternativetechnology.
• The textiles services sector is also struggling: with the critical nature of the service they provide, they require a considerable amount of energy to keep services, particularlyhospitalsandcarehomesstocked with lifesaving material as well as clothing and bed linens for the patients themselves. Losing these businesses would cause a lack of clothing for healthcareprofessionals, includingprotectivesanitary gowns for surgeons, nurses and doctors, uniforms including other forms of personal protective equipment.

RHEON LABS has now completed an extensive 6 monthtrialwithFET,aworldleaderinlaboratoryand
pilot meltspinning equipment. Backed by a £173,000 grant from Innovate UK for feasibility studies, RHEON LABS has further developed its RHEON™ technology, a reactive polymer that dynamically stiffens when subjected to force. The technology can control energy of any amplitude or frequency, from small vibrations to forces at ballistic-speeds and thereforehasawiderangeofapplications.
ThisInnovateUKSmartGrant-backedprojectaimsto develop a hyper viscoelastic fibre from RHEON™ which displays high strain-rate sensitive properties. Creating a fibre with unique strain-rate sensitive properties will be a world first. It will enable the creation of a “breakthrough-generation” of stretch textiles that can actively absorb, dampen and control energyduringmovement, ratherthansimplyactingas aspring.
Forclose-fittingactivewearandsportsbras,theability to actively control muscle mass or soft tissue movement during exercise will be a game-changing advancement. It will allow brands to engineer garments that relax during everyday use but actively stiffen during exercise for improved support and
performance.
The Innovate UK grant was awarded under the category of Hyper-Viscoelastic Fibre Extrusion for Textile Manufacture. Fibre Extrusion Technology Limited (FET) enabled the customer trials at its bespokeFibreDevelopmentCentreinLeeds,England using its in-house FET-103 Monofilament meltspinning facilities, in harness with RHEON and FET technical operatives. The next phase will be to upscale the trials of preferred materials on RHEON’s own new FET-103 meltspinning line, with FET’s continuedsupportandexpertiseonhand.
Creating a fibre with unique strain-rate sensitive characteristics could be as radical a change in the market as the initial introduction of stretch fibre with the launch of Lycra™. The textiles would have a multitude of beneficial properties and would provide significantly less compression in the garment than conventional materials, substantially improving user comfort, supportandperformance.
