Site Brief

The site is located in the old city of Ahmedabad on the banks of the River Sabarmati.This part of the old city which is a UNESCO World Heritage city consists of various communities like the marginalised Muslim Community to the north and the Bhadra community to the south of the study area.

The exclusive nature of the Bhadra community has its roots in the social life and norms during the Maratha Period. The community was divided into various groups based on their professions. As the Lal Darwaza market started prospering, more and more people started coming to the Lal Darwaza area in search of jobs found a home in the Bhadra Community. Though initially the older generations found the new social structure difficult to accept, different interactions made them warm up to the idea of change in the community.

Chand chali is a small community along the eastern bank of River Sabarmati. The community’s strength reduced a decade ago due to the riverfront development. Sardar baagh which is in the closer vicinity to the community, was a hustling hotspot for elderly people to sit and relax; for kids to play and quite a hide spot for couples.
