Business of Design

“We are on the cusp of a design revolution in Business. As a result, today's business people do not need to understand designers better...they need to become designers” - Roger Martin (Dean, Rotman School of Management, Toronto)

Design and Business Design is the professional practice of creating products, systems, or services oriented towards the user’s comfort (needs), and improve their use-environment (working/living). Business extend these services to the user. Design and Business Management bring together inter-disciplinary knowledge, concepts, and methods to produce innovative and user-centric solutions. Innovation and design are important ingredients in business strategy. ‘Business Design’ is the professional practice of applying the design process to business value creation through design thinking.

Business Design attempts to inculcate this learning into future business managers and leaders by integrating ‘design thinking’ and ‘innovation processes’ into mainstream management concepts. This follows a hands-on pedagogy to drive theoretical concepts through live projects. The approach facilitates experimentation with ideas and concepts, and provides a holistic perspective to solution development in an organization. Future leaders need to be a unique blend of business competencies and design thinking. Tools for Innovation

Event | The Operations Club - Round Table Design Thinking & Agile Culture

Operations Round Table Theme on Design Thinking & Agile Culture

Design Thinking & Agile culture and its relevance has steadily increased in India with companies open to innovation and change and ready to move on from traditional forms of system and process to use of new unconventional ways. The operations vertical of WeSchool organized a round table on this theme of ‘Design Thinking and Agile’ held on August 26, 2016 at campus. The aim was to help educate the audience on the future role of Design Thinking & Agile culture in the manufacturing sector. The senior batch students of class 2015-17 showcased their learnings on Design Thinking strategy as adopted for their Global Citizen Leaders project on E-Auto service in Electronic City Phase 1. The second inspiring example showcased was that of a corn seller – who was unable to fan the corns for 4-5 hours daily due to his frail health. He , applied innovative techniques to solve this operations problem by developing a portable fan made of materials that were easy to procure and safe to use. The example highlighted use of Design Thinking as applied to our daily routine chores. The panel comprised of senior industry professionals from leading companies such as Mr. R.A.Suresh, DGM-MS-IED-MR &MS, Bharat Electronic Ltd, Mr. V.Dinesh, Head of Manufacturing, Volvo CE. Mr. P. Venugopal,Supplier quality Lead Engineer, GE Health Care, Mr. Ramesh Krishnamurthy, Head of Agile Biz and Dev Ops, KPMG, Mr. Sadiq Basha M, Group Manager, Titan, Ms. Sangeereni GA, Executive, Titan, Mr. Asho Kumar Mysore, Head – APAC MIG Business Excellence, CGI, Mr. Ashish Kansal, Senior DM, Corporate Communication, Bharat Electronics Ltd. Mr. S.K.L.N.Prasanna, Guhring, Ms. Harsha, CGI, Mr. Anil Kalose, CGI. According to Mr. Ramesh Krishnamurthy, agility kills innovation and he cited the example of Amazon where the company had to ‘Time’ the market demand and hence could not leverage on some of their innovations. Innovation requires time and sometimes does not favour the company’s business demands. Continuing the discussion, Mr. R.A.Suresh, mentioned that experimentation, investment and time for innovation is a lengthy process in defence industry. He informed the audience that when a product is developed in defense industry, it is used for a period of 15 to 20 years. However the product undergoes design changes and innovation over a period of time and that enhances the products value. Mr. Sadiq Basha said, Innovation and agility are culture at his workplace. He spoke of innovative pipeline at Titan Ltd. – ‘Proof of Concept’ & ‘Agile to Market’. He cited the example of Smart Watch which is a product of innovation & culture, without comprising on agility.

Event | The Operations Club - Round Table The panel also discussed whether the design thinking has gained momentum in manufacturing and service sector in India. Mr.V Dinesh , while expressing his outlook said companies have realized that to survive they need to adopt and implement Design Thinking. He shared with audience the example of Volvo – where the products to be marketed in India were designed by their global teams in Europe and hence had missed on taking into consideration the Indian customer’s needs and the Indian market environment. This disconnect led to slower sales in the country. Now a change is reflected in the company’s strategy with adoption of Design Thinking. He further said that – the first step in Design Thinking is to empathize with customers and to become sensitive to the culture existing in the country. At Volvo, the company has now adopted the ‘Fish to Bowl’ concept model as followed by Japanese companies – which enables to understand the requirements and then design the product. In Design Thinking approach, both internal and external stake holders play a vital role. The panel further discussed on ‘Whether Design Thinking promotes diversity amongst workforce in an organization? Ms. Sangeereni G.A,, cited the example of workforce prevalent at Titan Ltd; which is diverse in the age group from 22-55 years. The diversity in age groups unleashes new thinking and innovative ideas and the products that enter the markets are a reflection of design thinking culture. While sharing views on future role of design thinking Mr. R A Suresh, cited the example of Ordnance Factory, which would procure its defense material from Russia or France. Any change in product material would require regulatory approval, despite the easy availability of superior materials in India to re-design the product. However, a new change is reflected in the institution. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has established Army Design that brings collaboration between Government and Private Players in defense industry. This has led to increase in innovation, agile thinking gaining momentum in government run institutions. Another example cited was of innovation in automotive industry – ‘Ola Cabs’ which is a disruptive innovation and consumer friendly. The panel also discussed that crisis also entails a company to bring and instill Design Thinking approach and leaders play a vital role. Currently the Design Thinking is rolled out on a larger scale in software industry in India and yet to percolate in manufacturing sector in a big way. On a lighter note the closing remarks were that of use of Design Thinking tools in one’s personal life especially with one’s spouse and everyone agreed on the same. The roundtable session was followed by question and answer sessions with students. Prof. Dr. Murali Mohan – Senior Associate Dean, Operation, WeSchool, Bangalore expressed his gratitude to the distinguished panel for their participation and for sharing their views on the Design Thinking concepts as adopted by industry. WE CAFÉ – DRIVE YOUR DREAMS MR. K.G.MOHAN KUMAR JOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR – TOYOTA KIRLOSKAR AUTO PARTS PVT. LTD. Enthusiasm and passion is an important trait if you have to ‘Drive Your Dreams’ – the theme for WeCafe with Mr. K. G. Mohan Kumar, Joint Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Pvt. Ltd. The students at the campus were excited to have an opportunity to interact with a business leader who is truly an unassuming person; calm and serene and known for his humble attitude. The interactive session began with Mr. Kumar, sharing his outlook on ‘Sustainable Business Practices and Innovation’ implemented at Toyota across the world. The WeCafé was anchored by Ms. Ajitha Prabhu, PGDM Class 2015-17.

WeCafé Session at WeSchool, Bangalore

According to Mr. Kumar, business dynamics in today’s world are volatile and his company which laid its foundation in the year 1900 has succeeded because of ‘Sustainable Business Practices’. He narrated to the audience the humble journey of the founder – Mr. Sakichi Toyoda, who would watch his young mother working tirelessly for long hours on a loom. It made the young man to develop & devise an automated loom and thus laid the foundation of the company – Toyoda Automatic Looms Works Ltd. Thus began the fascination for invention and best practices in manufacturing and in the year 1980s the company entered the automobile industry.

Today, Toyota is a world renowned brand to reckon within automobile industry and the company manufactures 10 million cars each year and has wide product range; with annual sales of 300 billion USD and is headquartered in Japan. The vision of the company is not to manufacture cars but to enrich the lives of the people in the mobility space and Innovation is one of the driving principles in Toyota said Mr. Kumar. He further informed the audience that the company is committed to quality and also in engaging talent and passion of people, because the company firmly believes in ‘People Power’ to succeed. He also spoke on ‘Strategy’ which is similar to playing a ‘Chess’ game wherein you size up your opponent before you decide your initial move and plan the attack. While speaking on product strategy – he spoke about Toyota’s global plans on rolling out new hybrid cars and the deep focus on H2O cars which will be the futuristic product as customers are becoming conscious of climate change and are keen to have cars that are low on emission. WE CAFÉ – DRIVE YOUR DREAMS

Mr. K.G.Mohan Kumar, Joint Managing Director – Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Pvt. Ltd. and Anchor Ajitha Prabhu at WeCafé

He spoke at length about Toyota’s business values such as continuous improvement to overcome business and process challenges and how the company strives to raise the quality and adhere to ‘Kaizen’ principles. In Japan the Culture is imperative and respect for people, time, discipline and compliance is valued and imbibed by all employeesfrom top to the bottom of the pyramid. The company lays strong emphasis on team work to achieve better results. While speaking on ‘Leadership’ philosophy at Toyota he mentioned that the company believes in internalizing and developing the leadership within the organization. He cited his own example that he joined the company as a Senior Manager and was appointed as a Joint Managing Director after working for the company for two decades. He explained that every leader at Toyota has to imbibe the company’s – DNA – Live the Vision and Values! Mr. Kumar also shared about the ‘Risk Management’ committee and spoke on the importance of ‘Agility and Customer satisfaction’ which is imperative to succeed. While sharing his thoughts on competition he spoke about‘Apple’s plans to enter the car segment, Google’s- self-drive cars and Tesla’s foray into Electrical cars. However, he was sceptical about the growth of electrical cars due to its inefficiency and wastage of battery power. It was interesting to learn that at ‘Toyota’ all employees have long term incentives which are linked to targets to be achieved and the structured appraisals linked to performance is mandatory to succeed to reach the coveted position in the company. The young students had a chance to learn and observe his humble behaviour. He was candid in his admission that despite Toyota being in India for two decades, his company has relatively low market share of 5% in the passenger car segment. He spoke about ‘Toyota – Etios’ which was developed for the emerging markets and his company had conducted market research in India to study the middle class aspiration, lifestyle and expectation However, the marketing and product strategy was a huge failure for Etios and the brand/product is labelled as a ‘TAXI’ in India. It is rare moment to witness a leader expressing the failure of a product in a humble and courageous manner. He shared that Innova and Qualis, have been hugely successful in global markets including India. In fact, today Innova is known for its durability and it can be driven easily on tough and rugged roads. It is the preferred vehicle in conflict zones to reach the desired destination.

27

WE CAFÉ – DRIVE YOUR DREAMS Speaking about customer analysis, he cited the example of Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman & Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., who has been following & reading weather reports on ‘High Density of Rainfall’ which gives him a deep perspective on developing and understanding the demand requirements for ‘Tractors’ by farming community in those regions. Hence, it is important to be connected to the grass root level and have a customer centric approach to drive business. He also touched upon ‘Gembha’ (means ‘Real Place’ in Japanese) In a factory the shop floor where workers and managers meet and discuss the challenges and wherein the flurry of activity, commotion and excitement resides, could be called so. He again reiterated the significance of team work and consensus approach to achieve a goal. While speaking on Indian economy; he applauded the Goods & Service Tax initiative by the Government of India, as it will give a boost to the automobile industry. While driving a car understanding the gear and accelerator and clutch is a necessity to have smooth dream drive. Hence, the talk shifted from business life to family and friends who play a deep role in celebrating success. Personal traits are revealed by friends and Mr. Pashuram, who knew him for the last 15 years described him as a ‘logical, intellectual, committed, unassuming, and having a spiritual personality’. His colleagues admired him for his logical thinking and punctuality. When questioned whether the upheavals at workplace affects his family life? Mr. Kumar gently expressed that ‘I never carry work home’. He firmly believes that by transferring the ups and downs at workplace will cloud the atmosphere at home and will upset the emotional quotient of his family members. Despite leading a hectic work life, where business calendar is blocked to accommodate domestic and global travels – family has been the crux for leading a balanced life. It was a beautiful moment for the audience who empathized with the loving and gentle father who was touched beyond the words when a letter written by his young son- Appu who is pursuing his MBA from IIM Kolkata was shown on the screen. In the letter: the son spoke of his admiration for his father, who despite his hectic work schedule, ensures quality time is spent with the family. Despite his dad’s meteoric rise in his career, he is deeply entrenched in family values and he considers him as a mentor. One of the interesting segments to look forward in WeCafe is – Rapid Fire around – where in guest has to respond with an answer in a minute. When questioned about his favourite destination –Mr. Kumar, replied promptly it is ‘Kerala’ –God’s Own Country and the ideal evening how would he spend – ‘dinner with family’ and when questioned the word ‘Appu’ signifies to him – the gentle father responded saying ‘Love’. The session was followed by a performance by WeSchool students who performed a mix of modern and classical music for the guest who too loves music and he was charmed by the performance.
