Acknowledgment The first semester at the National Institute of Design has been six months full of learning, and for the same I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible and has helped me along the way. I am grateful to my faculty, Mr. Jagdish, Mrs. Mona Prabhu, Mr. Trun Deep Girdhar, and Dr. Tridha Gajjar for guiding us through various courses and providing us immense support and guidance through the semester, you’ll have constantly helped us improve our work and have pushed to improve on our skills and talents, you’ll have always been available to guide us for both our course as well as extra curricular work thank you, I would like to express my gratitude towards Mr Bharat Suthar who was supremely patient with all of us, and took us through the entire production process with immense detail. Our foundation would have been incomplete with out the guidance of Vijay Punya, Mahan Dutta, Rajesh Thakare, Bela Rawal, Parthiv Shah, and Mr Pradeep Chowksi, who inducted me into the world of design and layed the foundation to start my design journey. I would also like to thank Mr. Vijai Katiyar, Amar Gargesh, and Anupam Jain. I would also like to thank my batch mates who have helped me learn with their invaualbe inputs, and constant support. 3

Semester 1 Semester 1 has been an exciting journey in design learning and I would like to express my gratitude to the National institute of design and my faculty for the same. This semester has changed not only what I have learnt but also the way I have learnt it. The approach of NID to learn while you do is not only unique but also effective, all courses lead to another and all learning adds up to help in the following module. While I have grown even without consciously knowing, here I have made an attempt to document a few of the learnings I have had over the semester that I am aware of and have enjoyed imbibing into my work ethic. Introduction to design taught me that design is subjective and yet functional, it has been done in multiple ways, and with different means and tools but what matters at the end is that it works and solves the problem effectively. Fundamentals of visual design taught me that with practice comes perfection, it may be drawing painting or composition, for as long as you keep trying you will keep improving. Typography taught me that type is functional, its not just a choice in a drop down menu but has a reason for its form and a place to be used. Design process taught me that problem solving is not based on assumption and stereotypes, knowing the problem will in itself reveal an effective solution. Image making taught me the difference between integration and superimposition, and how one visual form can convey meaning. Production process taught me what goes into making a print ready file and how reproduction and print works.

Poster about design Influences in our life:

Ekinox3 is a distribution board, designed and marketed by Legrand for the Indian audience. The asian market has a high demand for the Indoor distribution board contrarry to the western markets wherin most houses have an out door power distribuion unit. This product is a redesign of the previous distribution board launched in 2006, and therefore happens to solve many issues which were not possible earlier, due to technical and other contraints. Improvements include: • Change in form and material to improve quality of the product. • Improvement in safety and easy of use. • The earthing system has been integrated into the door, thus reducing the scope for human error.

The product has changed the form and material used to create the product, it has employed new techniques to help mold a single sheet of metal into the door of the distribution board, eliminating the need of adding additional rubber guards for sharp joints of the product, the product also integrated the earthing system into the door, improving the aesthetic and minimizing scope for human error due to which there could be potential loss of life and property. Color texture and shape of the product was changed to make it easier to maintain the product. The product was effectively designed to reduce installation time, and also increase the wiring space and wring management system within the product while reducing the projection on the wall by more than half. (21mm to 9mm).

• Internal components were repositioned to create more wiring space. • Total wall projection has been reduced by more than half. • The product has identified the necessary changes while keeping all users in mind

Assignment

IF

by Rudyard Kipling

This poem describes the characteristics of a righteous man. And in this piece I attempt to analyse the poem in light of the sublime theory as propagated by Emanuel Kant, and Edmund Burk.

To choose any one theory and assess any work of art on the basis of that theory

The Sublime theory suggests that some things that move us are beautiful and others are sublime, but the sublime moves us more profoundly by providing an overwhelming experience. The sublime names experiences like violent storms or huge buildings which seem to overwhelm us. Kant notes, one would expect the feeling of being overwhelmed to also be accompanied by a feeling of fear or at least discomfort. Whereas, the sublime can be a pleasurable experience, the sheer magnitude and size seem to humiliate us at a level, but paradoxically provide us with a delightful experience. Time and again the poem picks up examples of situations people face in everyday life and describes the noble reaction we should have to it.

The theory chosen by me was the theory of sublime by Emanuel Kant, I went about the assignment by reading about the theory and also doing some online research, and understanding the progression of the theory through time. Post which I analyzed the work of Rudyard Kipling in his poem “IF” through the lens of the sublime theory.

Claude Joseph Vernet’s Shipwrek (1759)

The poem is constructed in a manner wherein Kipling constantly questions the actions of the reader. The poem showcases a mirror to the reader, humiliating, and humbling them in the process, as every person shies away from greatness or deals in lies, or breaks when they see their work denounced. And yet leaves the reader with a hope at the end to achieve greatness and to become more than what he already is. At the very end of the poem Kipling promises “The Earth and everything that’s in it” to the reader who subscribes to all the virtues the poet has described and then he goes on to pitch the idea of a righteous character as more valuable than all the world has to offer. The poem in the true nature of romanticism challenges the social constructs, and general human behaviour which is filled with lies and judgement, and shows the better world, and places noble characteristics at the epitome of all that man has to achieve. While doing so Kipling shows how insignificant today’s man is in front of the righteous, and noble, and places the ultimate on a pedestal which seems unachievable in real life, but yet inspires man and shows the way to the righteous, which in itself is an overwhelming experience.

Pranav Rao M.Des, Graphic Design

Introduction to aesthetics, opened up a realm of new concepts for me, such as the difference in how the western and Indian aesthetics evolved, about the various theories and concepts that have been developed over the years such as Rasa theory from Natyashastra, The theory of Sublime by Immanuel Kant, Plato’s allegory, Aristotle’s view on art, Indian style of visual storytelling, and the western style of visual aesthetic.

Fundamentals of Visual Design Introduction to aesthetic through art was a theory course that helped educate us on how art has been viewed in the past in different time periods and in different parts of the world. Duration: 6 week Anchor Faculty: Kaushik Chakraborty

13

Fundamentals of design was a course to strengthen our foundation skills, the batch was divided into 3 parts, of which I was with visual communication, which included students form animation, film and video communication, and graphic desgin. We were taught basic courses such as drawing, painting, use of unique mediums and composition etc. It was an enriching experience and allowed me to get over my fear of drawing or sketching, and allowed us to learn form visiting faculties as well as our own peers. It layed the much needed foundation for us, as even when computers have taken over the graphic design world hand skills and the acumen built by putting pencil to paper is irreplaceable.

14

The course was divided into 4 parts Analytical drawing, which included perspective and object study, we were taught 1 point, and 2 point perspective. Human figure, which included basic human proportions and also individual facial features such as eyes, lips, nose ears and also hands and also live drawing Nature study here in we had to draw a tree, a branch, and natural textures

15

Drawing Faculty: Vijay Puniya, Mahan, Rajesh

This course helped me enhance my basic visual sensibility such as line weight and movement, natural forms and artificial structures, and also taught me necessary live observation skills. While also teaching me how to use different tools such as a brush, pencil, charcoal etc. which have been very helpful and a great experience as I was introduced to some of the tools for the first time.

16

Colour Faculty: Bela Rawal, Parthiv Shah The course on colour had us indulging in various assignments to understand colour theory, how colour works and how is it perceived, we even made a colour wheel to further understanding colour theory and mixing. We had the opportunity to learn from an industry veteran Mr. Parthiv shah who taught us how colour has been used over the years in various posters and movies, and how a colours can evoke feelings and how our past associations with the particular shade of colour affects our perception of it in a different settings. We were also introduced to a range of distinct art styles such as constructivism, Artdeco, Indian poster art.

17

18

Composition helped us understanding the basics of visual aesthetic, it made us aware of the invisible guides that are prevalent in all good designs, such as balance, harmony rhythm, proportion, unity and contrast. We depicted the various laws of design through the use of points lines and shaped We even learnt about gestalt psychology and its 10 principles, and made a presentation by identifying the various principles of gestalt in our environment by clicking pictures and documenting them.

Design Process

Design Process Design process was an important course that helped us understand problem solving better. It taught us how to analyze a problem without jumping to a solution and also how to research and get to the root of a problem without letting our bias cloud our judgment. Product Research Choose any product in our daily life and critically analyze the same. Product: 3 pin socket

Three Point Socket

Gradually wall sockets were developed to supplement those that screwed into lampholders. The 3-pin configuration first appeared inSocket a 1911 book dealing with electrical Three Point

products of A.P. Lundberg & Sons of London described as “TRIPIN earthed plug available in 2.5 amp & 5 amp models. Earthed plugs were invented by Philip F. Labre, for which the patent was issued to him in 1928.

Three Point Socket

Design Process

Having worked in advertising, I was used to being handed the findings from the research to come up with solutions. But this time I got the opportunity to go experience the research hands on, and formulate a brief accordingly.

22

6

1

While studying the 3 pin socket we divided the group into different sub groups and concentrated on different aspects of the research, I focused on the market user study and the new and emerging technology in the market. We then compiled all the work and looked for patterns in the problems shared by the people and the cause.

Design Process

Systems Research While conducting our research we found a completely different scenario than what we had expected. We had earlier assumed people of the city wouldn’t be content with the concrete structure blocking their access to the river body, but the on ground was quite the opposite. While compiling all our research we used the techniques taught to us such as the double diamond approach and also applied some methods we learnt from our fellow members, in order to streamline the research we made clusters of similar problems and then chose a single issue to deal with. From a list of various problems such as lack of drinking water, drug menace and the riverfront being a dead made of concrete and lack of shelter, we finally narrowed in on the problem of shelter and conducted an ideation session to come up with solutions

23

System: Sabarmati riverfront To choose a system and analyze the same for any problems if any exist, and present 3 solutions for the same, one that would be easy to implement, one that would be innovative and the last one that is futuristic.

We had theory sessions that educated us about the different processes involved in printing and how different techniques employ different processes, through the course we learnt about the history of printing and how each technique evolved. We went on to learn the mechanism involved in the working of the printer from conventional type of printers to new age unconventional printing techniques.

We even learnt about the necessary tools and care we need to take of our originals in order to achieve the best reproduction, also we were taught in depth about halftone screening and its use and development. We even learnt about colour and how it works and about the various colour gamut, along with colour we moved onto paper and how paper is measured and needs to be used when thinking of a print job.

26

Production Process

Site Visit We visited Art O Print a printing press in Sarkejh Ahmadabad, to better understand different processes in a printing press and also experience printing techniques, we could not have exposure to in house. we got to experience a range of printing techniques and also experienced the life cycle of a print job hands on.

Printing techniques:- Four colour offset, Four + Two colour offset, Flexography, Perfecting offset, Dye Cut, Folding

PIGMENTS //

The natural colouring matter of animal or plant tissue.

//

Colour (something) with or as if with pigment.

A distinction is usually made between a pigment, which is insoluble in its vehicle, and a dye, which either is itself a liquid or is soluble in its vehicle. A colorant can act as either a pigment or a dye depending on the vehicle involved. In some cases, a pigment can be manufactured from a dye by precipitating a soluble dye with a metallic salt. The resulting pigment is called a lake pigment. The term biological pigment is used for all colored substances independent of their solubility.

We created a poster using colours from pantone, and viewed the change in colour on from the colour guide, to the screen, and eventually in print.

Making and Breaking the Grid In order to understand the working of grids, we were asked to compose text in a manner that it follows a structure but must not follow a conventional grid. Typeface: Futura

Rise & fall of the grid Paul Rand, the pioneer of modern design in America in the early 1940’s, had been instrumental in convincing business that design was good for them; his clients and those of other designers had gradually become familiar with the idea of systems to help organize their public images. In his 1965 design manuals for Westinghouse, Rand developed complex grids to ensure continuity in such diverse media as packaging, print advertising, and television. By the late 1970’s, formatting corporate communications in a grid was an expected approach to achieving visual continuity. Corporate identity firms like Anspach Grossman Portugal in New York City typified this approach with its 1976 identity program for Citibank and similar corporate clients. The international Style had come to be an accepted part of what graphic design was about.

German designer Otl Aicher implemented a program of even greater precision for Lufthansa, the German airline. Collaborating with Tomás Gonda, Fritz Quereng, and Nick Roericht, Aicher anticipated Lufthansa’s every potential need, standardizing formats and rigorously enforcing the grid to unify communications of different scale, materials, and production constraints. Detailed manuals and measurement ensured visual uniformity.

Designers also started using the grid as an end in itself, and they exploited the visual potential of the form for its own sake.

Radical experimentation based on grid structures during the 1980’s eventually led to examination of other kinds of organisational methods; designers and design educators like April Greiman and Katherine McCoy spearheaded explorations outside the realm of rational structure. This kind of deconstruction was also eventually assimilated into common practice alongside strictly grid-based work and other entirely anti-structural ideas.

Image Making

Image Making Image making is a fundamental skill for any graphic designer and we got to experiment with a lot of ideas in this course Duration: 2 week Anchor Faculty: Tridha Gajjar

41

Through the course we learnt multiple skills such as the difference between Integration of forms and superimposition, we even learnt integration of basic and complex forms and balancing aesthetics with functionality. we even learnt reduction of images and the importance of retention of details and elimination of others, and a crucial realisation was the importance of hand done explorations.

Integration:-

Fusing two or more forms, such that they appear to be a single unit.

Superimposition:-

To place or lay over another typically so that both are evident.

42

Image Making

43

Letter Integration

Our first assignment was based on integration of 2 forms in a manner that both are legible while the amalgamated form retains the quality of a composite unit. For the same we explored using the initials of our names, we even kept in mind the meaning we intended to communicate with the form we had created. Understanding the difference between integration and super imposition was critical, and through the explorations we were able to arrive at a composite unit.

44

Image Making

Form Integration

When we had managed to integrate 2 letter forms we moved on to a more complex Integration where in we had to unite a letter form and an object, and through the integration signify a quality in our personality, The process was more complex as we not only had to integrate 2 forms but also simplify an object to a level where in it could be integrated effectively. Through the process we not only learnt how to merge 2 forms but also how to convey meaning trough visuals.
