Atelier PRO and Healthcare It’s in our genes to place a strong emphasis on the human experience of spaces, how they are interconnected and how they relate to the environment. The senses play a major role in our personal development and wellbeing. We believe that nature and sustainability are an important and inseparable part of this. For example, the concept of Healing Environment is not limited to the internal approach to healthcare buildings. The relationship with the environment, translated into the themes of light, tranquility, space, visibility, view, warmth and security, characterizes all our designs. This approach influences material and color choices. Naturally they meet the technical, medical and functional requirements, but they also aim to have a positive effect on our senses: light, tactility, association and the patina that forms over time. Within the total design we strive for tranquility, balance and functionality, as well as inspiring spaciousness that can amaze, stimulate and even make you smile. Together with the client, we are eager to peel the assignment down to the core, thereby exposing the essence behind the question, in view of the maximum quality for client and user. Thinking along, cooperating, flexible and with a fresh perspective, not locked in clichés, simultaneously taking a step back on time to continue making the choices that we have drawn up with the client at the beginning. Partly because of this very attitude, we have made successful designs for care institutions, such as general practitioner practices, care centers and care homes for various target groups since our foundation. from comfortable sheltered homes to housing for demented elderly and disabled people. In 2006 we won the assignment for the realization of the Meander Medical Center in Amersfoort. This shows the confidence in our fresh view of healthcare and our ability to relate to residents and their loved ones, but also in shaping a pleasant and adequate daily working environment for staff. The Meander Medical Center was delivered in October 2013. We have gained a wealth of experience with this project, but have not lost our original approach. We approach every new assignment with an open attitude and tailor this to the unique situation and the target group. This, combined with our specialist experience with both care homes and care institutions, has proven to be the right formula to develop highquality care buildings.

Meander Centre for oncological care, Amersfoort a comfortable interior Period 2020-2021 Client Meander Medisch Centrum Project architect Dorte Kristensen and Thijs Klinkhamer Address Maatweg 3, Amersfoort Gross floor area 1.200 m²
In 2021, Meander Medical Centre Amersfoort was given its own centre for oncological care, a special clinic for all oncological conditions. This brought the philosophy behind the original design of the hospital, ‘people first’, a step closer. Where previously these specialisms were scattered around the hospital, forcing patients to go to different departments, they are now housed in one clinic. The new Centre for oncological care is located on the quiet park side, on the 1st floor of the former psychiatry building from 2013. It consists of a living room with access to the hospital park, mammography diagnostics and consultation and examination rooms.

Research Diagnostics Center Amsterdam UMC sustainable and flexible Atelier PRO made the design for the new building of the Research Diagnostics Center that is part of the Amsterdam UMC (University Medical Centre). The building with offices and laboratories on the Van der Boechorststraat, is approximately 28,100 m² and is part of a larger, future expansion on the south side of the existing VUmc complex on the Boelelaan in Amsterdam. The building is flexible in design as a future-proof housing for the so-called ‘Adore’ project. ADORE stands for Amsterdam Oncology and Neuroscience Research and encompasses a new way of medical-scientific research in which the use of the synergies between oncological and neuroscientific research is central. In atelier PRO‘s design, the combination of a healing environment, sustainability and flexibility has strongly been emphasised. The building contains two atriums that function as ‘green lungs’: these are tempered outdoor climate zones with indoor gardens, surrounded by clusters of workplaces.

Greenery and an abundance of daylight characterise the design. These essentials add to an optimal stay and to a wellfunctioning transparent building for patients, visitors and personnel. The revitalisation was financed through crowd funding.

Meander Medical Centre, Amersfoort
a hospital where it’s easy to find your way
With a gross floor area (GFA) of 112,000 m², the Meander Medical Centre is a large-scale care institution. When the human scale and smallest needs are ignored, such a building can quite easily end up becoming a medical machine. Within the scope of recovery and peace, atelier PRO has designed a medical centre, in which a humane surrounding has been created that keeps close contact to the ecological values of the surrounding green Eemscheg environment.

Healing Sofa designed by atelier PRO architekten manufactured by Keijsers Sleeping in a hospital is not the same as sleeping at home. Especially after surgery or long term illness. To have someone around you whom you can trust is comforting to the patient. For this purpose atelier PRO designed a multifunctional Healing Sofa. This roomingin piece of furniture is unique in the Netherlands and has been developed in collaboration with the Meander Medical Centre. It is one of the first multi-functional pieces of furniture for professional care institutions. The Healing Sofa has combined functions of a writing desk, guest bed, sofa and table. The manufacturer of the Healing Sofa is Keijsers Lundiform.

Medical City in the Middle East state of the art campus
Atelier PRO has been asked to design a state of the art medical university campus in the Middle East. The facility will enable medical students to acquire information and experience from the medical hospital. The design covers a mixture of a medical faculty, a hospital, a gym and a mosque where several end users can meet, work and enjoy the qualities of the properties. Healthcare icon in the region The strategic location of the Medical City is located between two important cultural and historical cities. This features the importance of designing both an icon, while preserving its Arabic identity. Instead of providing a western perspective, the architectural agenda was to rediscover a regional Arabian identity in contrast to the non-contextual modern interventions of nowadays.

Alternating daylight and patios with trees add liveliness to the Plaza and the Passage
Zaans Medical Center, Zaandam competition design
The spearhead in designing the medical centre Zaans Medisch Centrum (ZMC) was the creation of a Healing Environment for patients, situated in the Burgemeester in ‘t Veldpark. In doing so, the building volume as a whole functions as a noise barrier. A second important theme is finding your way. The outpatient clinics are arranged around the Plaza and the main entrances of the nursing wards are situated on the Passage. All the transport of beds and goods has been separated from the flow of visitors. Alternating daylight and patios with trees lend liveliness to the Plaza and the Passage. The sun penetrating deeply into the room, or the slate grey clouds hanging threateningly above the Zaanstreek: in these urban interiors it is always possible to experience day or night, sun or rain.

The installations are hidden in the paneling of the corridors and can therefore be reached without disturbing the residents.
Living room parcour instead of hallways, with memory walls next to the entrance doors. Here, personal attributes from earlier periodes can be hung. This makes one feel at home and helps when memory is lost. This room is intended to receive guests, to play games and for other sociability

First floor Plaatwerkerij and new build
Adjacent to the winter garden are living units for demented elderly people. The doors of the units are open as much as possible, allowing the elderly to walk freely through the winter garden and visit each other. This contrasts with the image of literally a ‘closed ward’
In terms of appearance and scale, the new building fits well with the yellow brick and smaller dimensions in the area

Solund Copenhagen competition design
Courtyards and gardens surrounded by the auxiliary functions
Housing project for the elderly in the very heart of Copenhagen. Solund consists of 384 houses, subdivided into 8 clusters on a plinth course providing auxiliary facilities such as a restaurant and a wellness centre, as well as a childcare centre. In the middle of the allotment runs a recreation route right through a winter garden, which is open to the general public. The ground floor area offers a range of gardens that are situated dividedly alongside an internal main street, which bends at various points. The entrance leads people to a multifunctional square with raising points to the residence groups situated above. In addition, the complex contains a number of experimental houses in which healthcare methodologies are tested. This also provides accommodation for researchers who want to carry out research on location. To improve any possible synergy, Solund is closely connected to the adjacent hospital and research centre. Achtmaal Seniors’ Residences countryside so attractive and liveable
Achtmaal is a small rural area in North Brabant with more than 1,600 inhabitants. The municipality wanted to ensure that the core of the village remains attractive and viable for young and old. Good facilities play an important role, and therefore, a church, a supermarket, a café and a multifunctional accommodation, shortly MFA, have been added to the village. In addition to the MFA, five small homes have been realized. These homes have a gross area of 150 square meters and are primarily intended for seniors. Therefore, both the living area and the master bedroom with the attached bathroom are located on the ground floor. The bathroom is also accessible from the attic to make the house more flexible. Moreover, the property is also interesting for other target groups.

Urban villa’s Westeraam, Elst nursing houses in a sunny setting
The Westeraam neighbourhood in Elst has been enriched with two urban villas. The sculptural building volumes provide ageing in place houses, which meet high comfort and accessibility demands. The two villas are situated near the water, so that the inhabitants can optimally enjoy the view and sunlight. Additionally, the house plans have been organized in a similar way. The size of the window openings follows the orientation: a lot of glass on the south side and narrow windows on the north side; which is favourable for the energy performance of the houses.

De Statie Seniors’ Residences housing for elderly as part of a multipurpose community building Senior complex with 23 apartments in Sas van Gent is part of the Multifunctional Community School De Statie. A sand-colored volume with white cutouts, white window frames and green tinted tempered glass balconies. The balconies are to the south and not in line to provide privacy. The gallery is wider to create a place where the residents can meet. The multipurpose community building is a valuable neighbour for the residents of the seniors’ apartments. The programming of the building addresses this target group with facilities and activities including a cafe, library, bridge club, gym and volunteering opportunities with the various clubs. This helps establish a framework to prevent social isolation, whereby the residents can still remain active and be a vital part of the community. Senior housing
