Atelier PRO office, Den Haag

Atelier PRO has been located at the Kerkhoflaan in The Hague since 1976. What star ted as a small group of enthusiastic professionals has grown over the years into an architectural office of fif ty ambitious professionals.

Due to the organic growth of the office, its accommodation has expanded over the years. At every extension, we were inspired by the strength of the location with respect for the dune environment. This idea of ‘genus loci’ lies at the basis of all design solutions of our architects. Our own office is a prime example of this.

We are atelier PRO

We believe in the connecting power of architecture. With each other, with the past, present, and the future. Timeless. In this vision lies both our strength and our promise. A promise that we create a connection between technology and aesthetics, between dreams and possibilities. From chair to city and from sketch to building. With our team, we focus on living, working, caring, and learning. We design environments that contribute to the quality of our lives.

We see our work as successful when it connects people, buildings, and surroundings. A relationship that is worth nurturing and passing on to the next user So that it lives on; generation af ter generation. Because, let’s be honest, timeless is the purest form of sustainability

Expertise

Where does our strength, our credibility in the industr y lie?

Healthcare

In addition to being ingrained in our personality, we bring broad professional experience in healthcare. With numerous projects; from the Zorgpark Zon en Schild and the Meander Centrum for oncological care in Amersfoort, to the Children’s hospital Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Diverse in form, connecting at the core.

Education

We are happy to contribute to a new flourishing generation. A future where the individual can thrive within the larger whole. Our contribution comes in the form of unique educational buildings.

Residential & Office Construction

How do we share life, living, and working? How do we ensure that people find and help each other instead of avoiding and alienating? Our vision of architecture can be summed up in one word: connection. From the idea to the execution, from local to a large scale.

Buurschap Roosenhorst, Voorschoten

In the valuable area De Duivenvoorde Corridor, a special residential area has emerge: Roosenhorst. The smallscale location forms a natural connection between the dune landscape on the coast and the inland Green Heart behind the canal the Vliet.

Living in an open landscape, between monumental farms and tree-lined avenues around the rising forest of the Buitenplaats Duivenvoorde. The 41 dwellings are divided into four rooms, each with its own house typology and character. The scale of the ensemble harmoniously blends in with the historical landscape.

13
Birds eye & Het Lint De Bosrand & De Boomgaard

The “modern” translation of the countr y house type can be seen in several aspects. In this symmetrical residential building, all the windows are the same so that, typical of a countr y house, it is not possible to tell which function is behind them. This repetition is interrupted by the raised entrance.

Appartements Gouda

Atelier PRO designed a residential complex with 67 apartments in Gouda for housing corporations Mozaïek Wonen and Woonpartners Midden-Holland - 67 social housing units, which are in great demand.

On all fronts, we opted for quality: the design is carefully detailed, the complex is situated on a prominent location, the houses are spacious, each apar tment has its own winter garden, and biodiversity was an active factor in the design; in doing so, we managed to create social housing with the quality of an owner-occupied dwelling.

The new building is clearly seen as an improvement for the neighbourhood, and as such was embraced by residents.

Bastiaanpoort Delft

2021 saw the completion of housing and retail complex Bastiaanpoort in Delf t. The building occupies an important location on the edge of the historic city centre, previously home to depar tment store V&D. Af ter the bankruptcy of this retail chain, property developers MN and Proactief Vastgoed opted to redevelop the site on behalf of Pension Fund Metaal & Techniek. The result is a building block with rental housing and shops in the plinth, adding to the housing stock in Delf t and the liveliness of the neighbourhood.

The complex is designed as a recognisable, uniform building block, executed in warm-hued brick Standing at a height of four floors, it provides a transition between the higher new constructions around the Bastiaansplein and the lower buildings of the historical city centre.

Renovation and expansion

Zon & Schild GGZ

Centraal, Amersfoort

For decades the GGZ has housed on the Zon & Schild site in Amersfoort, located along the historic Wegh der Weghen, now the Utrechtse weg.

Now that the healthcare sector is going through a transition, it is time to dispose of par t of the site for housing and to renovate par t of the buildings or provide replacement new construction.

This was our assignment. In collaboration with Van Hoogevest Architects, Atelier PRO won the 2019 architectural selection to repurpose the monumental Hebron for client-oriented facilities and offices (Van Hoogevest) and provide new construction of 80 studios for long-term psychiatric care.

Scheldehof Residential Care Centre, Vlissingen

The monumental Zware Plaatwerkerij shipyard building in the hear t of Vlissingen, and the adjacent site, is transformed into a residential care complex with residences and public functions.

The closed facades is open up through the extensive use of glass. Internally, three levels of residences were suspended like a standalone piece of furniture in the vast space. The new building beside the factory fits well in scale and appearance with the surroundings, built from yellow masonr y with a small scale corresponding to the side street. The residences are organised around a winter garden. The structure and infrastructure are especially designed to enable the dwellings to adapt to changing functions in the future.

Office building EDGE Stadium, Amsterdam

Making an existing building from 2001, which at the time was already sustainable, more sustainable and transforming it into a contemporary office - that was the assignment atelier PRO received from developer EDGE.

In the fall of 2020, Loyens & Loef f moved out of the Forum office complex, which was designed by atelier PRO twenty years ago. The distinctive building, already ahead of its time in terms of sustainability, has now been transformed into the EDGE Stadium collective building. The transformation has created a modern and inspiring working environment for various companies and businesses; a deliberate mix, which promotes mutual interaction and innovation.

The new Veurs schoolbuilding is a compact volume with a clear shape. The masonr y façade corresponds to the surrounding buildings.

The shape and appearance of the building are determined by various elements. Not only the urban development preconditions, the plot shape and Image Quality Plan of the area have been of influence, but also the desire to realize an optimal walking lines inside the building. Choosing this building shape resulted in another very important achievement. It led to an optimum ratio between the building volume and the sur face of the outer shell, according to the most energy efficient requirements.

The British School of Amsterdam

The British School of Amsterdam (BSA) of fers a British international education to 900 children aged from three to 18. The BSA chose to transform a historic penitentiary to house its three scattered schools (Early years, Juniors and Seniors) along with community facilities.

The architectural assignment was a challenge. The closed and introverted nature of the prison had to be reconciled with the world-oriented spirit of education. In addition to the 6,762 m² renovation of the municipal monument, 7,361 m² new construction has been added in a harmonious manner The logistics and routing within the old prison was used as a basis and the new program components were attached to it. Each building section, or wing of the prison, is a specific school. The central hall is the meeting point for everyone, the halls in the wings are used by the dif ferent schools.

Lumion, Amsterdam

Lumion is a secondar y school for general, higher and pre-university education. The school is housed at Vlaardingenlaan 25 in Amsterdam. Use is made of par ts of the monumental school building on the site. It is one of the youngest monuments in New West, and was built in 1973 to a design by architect J.B. Press. The brutalist building is characterized by the use of concrete, glass and large cantilevers.

The senior grade has been realized in the renovated monument, the junior grade has been given a completely new building component that is connected to the monument through a transparent central hall. A new sports hall has also been realized on site.

Lumion is the first par tner of Kunskapsskolan Netherland.

Rudolf Steiner College and School, Haarlem

The new building of the Rudolf Steiner College, together with the adjacent transformed primar y school and af terschool care facilities, form a new entity in the Schalkwijk district. A transparent connecting section makes it possible for both schools to share functions, which is a basic principle of the Waldorf philosophy.

Because the new college had to find a place in the limited space between the existing school and the street, a compact layout was designed in three layers. In the centre of the building there are two large spaces: the main hall and the gymnasium above it. The rest of the programme folds itself around these spaces.
