Art Classes & Events September – October 2017
Your artist is inside.
Art is smart. This summer, Americans for the Arts released their fifth economic impact study, Arts & Economic Prosperity 5. The study examines the economic impact of nonprofit arts & cultural organizations and their audiences in 2015. The results are astounding! Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 is the most comprehensive study of its kind ever conducted. It aggregates detailed economic impact data from 14,439 arts organizations and 212,691 audience spending surveys from all 50 states. To relieve you from reading all 542 pages of findings, I’ll give you a few of the key highlights here… In 2015, performing and visual arts organizations, festivals, public art programs, museums and arts centers: •
pumped $63.8 billion into the nation’s economy
•
supported 2.3 million jobs
•
provided $49.4 billion in household income
•
generated $11.9 billion in total tax revenue
Also – when patrons attend an arts event, they may pay for parking, eat dinner at a restaurant, enjoy dessert after the show, and return home to pay the babysitter. The study finds that the typical attendee spends $31.47 per person, per event beyond the cost of admission. What does this all mean? Well, it means that when you engage in arts activities at Pratt, you are also investing in a prosperous local community. You are enjoying all of the personal benefits of making art while at the same contributing to a cascade of positive economic impacts in your surrounding community. Sounds like a smart investment to me! What are you waiting for? ☺ Cheers,
Steve Galatro, Executive Director Source: http://www.americansforthearts.org/

Interview with Rachel David by Heather Olson Rachel David is a sculptor working primarily with forged steel. Her work is concerned with social justice, community, emotional communication and the environment. She has been a visiting artist and teacher around the country including Appalachian Center for Craft (TN), The Crucible (CA), and the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. Her work has been published in books and magazines including Ironwork Today 4, Imago Mundi; Reparations, (T)Here Magazine, and FFJ: Formed And Fabricated Journal. While her studio practice also includes commercial projects for a national client base, her unique furniture and sculpture have been collected by the City of New Orleans, Helis Oil Foundation and numerous private collections around the country. Rachel has always had a consuming creative streak and works diligently to improve her skill as a metalworker and as a citizen of the world. “Remember, all the “tools” are available, everything has been done, and it is up to you to do it better and differently.” When did you start getting into blacksmithing? I first got into it in 2004. I started doing metalwork in 7th grade in shop class, and then I took a long hiatus. I had been welding for a few years and while I was at Evergreen State College my teacher, Bob Woods, told me I could get metal hot and hammer on it. He introduced me to forging to do organic work and my mind was blown. It was really exciting. I took a class at Penland after Evergreen, and then I got a job in New Orleans and I’ve been here since then.
Do you see the blacksmithing community growing, with more women smiths and artists making work now than before? There is so much more interest now! I live in a very different part of the country than the Pacific Northwest, but we’ve seen so much growth all over the country in the last 10 – 15 years. The ease of finding out about classes and events is so great, and the quality of events and workshops has increased too. It’s an honor to be doing this work at this time.
Tell me about the class that you’ll be teaching at Pratt this fall. The class I want to do at Pratt has to do with design and it will be a mix of furniture and sculpture. I will provide students with a suggested reading list—I think they are very important. We will talk about design and making furniture or sculpture, with a focus on repetition and accuracy. Participants will be asked to have some shapes in mind, and we will work on developing those ideas. I like the idea of everyone working on a project together, maybe

for the Pratt auction or for the new Pratt campus. I’ll be giving an hourlong lecture at the Seattle Metals Guild while I am in town as well.
Can you tell me about your current work and your process? I have been making a lot of furniture recently because it feeds my need for precision and I take commissions for it from around the country. You have to pay attention to the details and you have to make things fit and work together. I like facilitating group builds. I did one in Austin last summer that was a bench where residents of a housing community got to work together on the project. People who were formerly homeless live there, and it was all pretty amazing. I am currently working on a two-person highly collaborative sculpture and video installation exhibition that will open for Prospect 4 Satellites on November 18, focusing on the social and environmental causes and repercussions of plastic consumption and waste.

Sideboard (detail), photo by Seth Boonchai
What would your dream project look like and how would you make it? I want to create a public space that involves sound aspects. I’d like to make a roof structure that’s a soundboard, and double aeolian harps that affect that soundboard when it’s windy, with rooms within the structure that are affected by the sounds above. People could play the strings and interact with it. I have some collaborators in mind to help me—one is a rock musician and I think he’d bring some great ideas. I’d like to make it a public space and have furniture there that the public could use as a gathering place. It would be a very big, site-specific project.
Where can we see your work currently? I am in a furniture gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine. I do a few craft shows every year as well. Mostly I do commission work, so people can contact me and ask for specific pieces. If someone sees something they like on my website I will create something similar for them. I feel very fortunate that I have a great client base of very
open-minded people. I’d love to have work in galleries in Seattle and LA and New York. I just want to keep making.
What advice would you give to young people who are interested in forging and fabrication, and thinking about making it a career? I’d say it’s not glamourous. If you’re not interested in working ridiculously hard, don’t waste your time. Get into a place where your overhead is very low, and try to establish a client base that is nearby. Practice, work hard, don’t give in to what is easy. I find it humbling every day. Remember, all the “tools” are available, everything has been done, and it is up to you to do it better and differently. Lots of amazing solutions are floating around in the ether for you to reference. Learn more about Rachel and see her work here: https://redmetal.net/

Tuition Assistance 27
2017–18 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.
For full information and to apply, please go to our website at
pratt.org/tuitionassistance.
Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.
Eligibility Those whose household income falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (shown below) are eligible for Tuition Assistance. If your household income is the same or less than the amount in the following chart, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance at Pratt Fine Arts Center. * Household Size: this number includes the applicant, any other individuals who share financial responsibility for the household, and all dependents ** Household Income: the combined gross income generated each year by all household members, as reported on IRS annual income tax forms
