2017 Fine Art Auction & 40th Anniversary Celebration Catalog
Arts Auction 33RD ANNUAL FINEFine ART AUCTION
Introduction
If I had rubies, riches, and crowns, I’d buy the whole world and change things around. –B OB DYL AN, 1963
Dear Friends, Tonight we celebrate Pratt’s 40th Anniversary with a Ruby Riot. It is quite fitting if you really think about it… A ruby is formed under many years of pressure through a unique combination of elements. It is a natural wonder made more beautiful by its imperfections. It is multi-faceted, awe-inspiring and rare. Sounds a lot like Pratt, right? The riot component is equally fitting as our history has been riot in every sense of the word. At times, it was a raucous celebration. And others, a fight for survival. But it has always been an uprising. It has always been a passion-fueled movement to bring art to everyone. And it always will be. Tonight we bid boldly on incredible work from hundreds of local artists and raise our paddles in support of the continued uprising at Pratt Fine Arts Center. Tonight we make an important investment in art and artists that will kick-start our next forty years. It is said that teamwork makes the dream work and we are certainly proof of that: to our dazzling team of board, staff and volunteers we extend our immense gratitude for your past and ongoing support; we would not be here without you all. And to two of our most precious gems, dynamic duo co-chairs Billy & Piper O’Neill, thank you for making this celebration so special. You brought creativity, passion and spirit to this evening’s event and we are in debt for your vision and generosity! Finally, we are humbled to see so many loyal supporters in the room tonight and so many new friends joining us in support of our efforts to bring art to everyone. We’ve never needed art more! Thank you all for celebrating our past and honoring our future with us tonight! Cheers,
Jenny Pohlman

,
Auction Co-chair s Welcome On behalf of Pratt Fine Arts Center, welcome to Ruby Riot! You’re here tonight because you love Pratt as much as we do (or, you just wanted an excuse to wear all red in public with a bunch of other people also wearing 50 shades of ruby) either way, we love you! Welcome! You look amazing! In these wild and turbulent times we live in, Pratt plays a vital role in our community, perhaps more now than ever. Pratt’s tagline “Your artist is inside” isn’t just wordplay or clever marketing. It’s a clarion call to everyone who cares about the arts, a reminder to bring forth your inner creativity, your passion and your ideas and share them with the world. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Pratt continues to be the place to nurture ideas and learn new skills, but perhaps the most important function Pratt skillfully facilitates isn’t just the sublime act of making. Pratt is a place of community, of inclusiveness; a place to come together to create, collaborate, discuss, build up, melt down, layer and sift through to ultimately nurture the artist spirit we all possess. Thank you for supporting Pratt Fine Arts Center. We hope everyone has a great time tonight!

Pratt Fine Arts Center
About Pratt Fine Arts Center Pratt Fine Arts Center began in 1976 as a tiny art facility with a big vision to build a community of artists and an educational center providing the tools and the training to support the creation of art. Today, Pratt makes art accessible to everyone, offering a place for spirited exchange, self-expression and personal transformation through creativity. A unique multidisciplinary visual arts resource, Pratt provides education and instruction, community programs and professionally equipped art making facilities.
Your artist is inside. Pratt Fine Arts Center is proud to serve as a lasting tribute to Edwin T. Pratt, who devoted his life to improving the quality of life for all people. Mr. Pratt served as Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League from 1961 to 1969. His assassination in that year by unknown assailants was deeply felt by many Seattleites who depended on Pratt’s calm leadership during a period of social upheaval. For almost four decades, Pratt has been providing the Northwest community with the opportunity to experience art. Pratt’s classes teach more than 3,800 students and its studios serve more than 300 working artists each year. Its classes, lectures and programs reach more than 20,000 people annually. Affordable studio space with an unparalleled array of equipment provides artists of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to learn, to experiment and to create.

Kathy Ross Pratt community member since 1988
Chronicles of a Small Planet | $250 Linocut involves a 3-D process (carving) so it’s almost a 3-D medium, despite the final 2-D result. For Kathy Ross, it’s definitely relaxing, as it involves hours of sitting in the woods listening to the winds in the cedars. This piece reflects an ongoing concern with the world. She has had shows at Friesen, Stonington, Kingsfoot galleries; and at the SAM gallery, BAM,TAM. The (tin) Bookmobile was purchased for the permanent collection at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Davis lives and works in Seattle and has exhibited across the US including NYC and Washington D.C.

Diane Davis’ work often is inspired by natural forms such as trees. Grove began with a visit to Kubota Garden in Seattle where she fell in love with a grove of trees in the garden. This etching was part of a small works show last summer at the Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington D.C.
Junko Yamamoto Pratt community member since 2002
Silent Auction 1
Etching, 9 x 6, 2016
Consciousness Calls | $250 Junko Yamamoto’s work explores space and memories. Her process combines brush painting, layers of color and shapes, with layers that give printmaking or stamp-like quality. Yamomoto’s recent achievements include Pratt Artist in Residence in 2015, Artist Trust GAP Grant 2015, Public Art Boot Camp and Art Interruptions 2016 from the Office of Arts and Culture. She has a solo show at TASTE at SAM in May 2017.

Colleen Maloney Pratt community member since 2008
Czech Republic, Yellow Fields | $300 Satellite images inform Colleen Maloney’s work, allowing her to capture pictures of natural and man-made forms around the globe. Whether recognizable landforms or mysterious structures appear in Maloney’s work, they afford new ways to abstractly interpret what she sees. Working with rich colors and bold, fluid strokes, shapes and fields of color appear spontaneously. If the viewer feels as though they are transported through color, line and the enthusiasm of her painterly monoprints, then Maloney has succeeded.

Leslie Ulrich has always been attracted to patch work maybe because her mother is a quilter and she grew up surrounded by color and patterns. Patchworked is a series she has been working on for several years now. Leslie works with recycled brown paper because it is a way to recycle the paper and ‘’make something from nothing’’, a theme that has inspired her art making.

Leslie Nan Moon Pratt community member since 2009

Carol Ross works in oil, using encaustic medium to provide layers of depth to bring the paintings to life visually. The concept for this painting developed over the last few years, as Ross observed the movement of refugees from around the world seeking safety. She wanted to represent a family that might be leaving a war-torn country. They look like they could fit in anywhere, but a closer look might imply challenges to finding a safe harbour.

Alaska’s wild expanse and harsh climate mold any person who lasts through their first winter. Through the years, Vicki Platts-Brown has maintained her love of Arctic archaeology and Eskimo culture. Currently she is working on a series of prints depicting Eskimo experience. This print represents Sedna, an important mythological figure. She fell into the sea from her father’s boat. Trying to return, he cut off her fingers. Her fingers became the animals of the sea. (After working so hard on rendering her hands, the artist couldn’t cut off her fingers.)

Cynthia Hibbard prefers to hopscotch through different mediums in search of something she didn’t quite know when she started out. She is compelled by moods, light, play and forms, and juxtapositions. This etching, from Hibbard’s 2016 Shift Gallery show Joshua and Jesus, is part of a series of rock formation studies created at Crown Point Press in San Francisco.
Creation | $425 Abbie Birmingham is a print and book artist who loves combining a variety of printmaking techniques in her work. These pieces can include etching, screenprint, monoprint, collograph and shellac plates as well as collage. Abbie is inspired by organic forms from nature and from the built environment, and the impact of the passage of time on each.

After getting her art degree, she has since settled down to pursue her art career in Los Angeles, later Seattle and finally Hawaii with the big excitement of adopting her daughter.

Airwavves | $700 Cait Willis’ work draws awareness to this syndrome (the Glitch) and fixes it in physical form. The medium is the message, as she combines gold leaf, layers of paint and resin into works that absolutely cannot be flattened into a digital form, cannot even be easily photographed, works that change with the light and the angle one views them, but are objectively lovely. Rather than recolonizing past and future, Willis preserves in amber the fleeting artifacts of the digital age, the nuisances that remind us that nothing is immortal.

Wave Ring | $175 “Wave Ring” was made using the process developed by Janos Gabor Varga for his ‘’magnetic fieldwork’’ jewelry. Wave Ring began as a straight piece of flat bronze that was forged into an undulating curve before parallel lines were chiseled into it. The curve yielded carved waves when the base metal was straightened again. The completed piece was inspired by a vision of vastly oversized jewelry removed from the possibility of use as adornment.

A naturally occurring phenomenon on Navajo tribal lands, ant hill garnets are a perfect metaphor.

Rickie Wolfe’s wall mounted sculptures reference calligraphy, hives, and unearthed treasures. After welding the forged circles and curvilinear pieces of metal from her palette of forms, she looks for compositional interest, line width, and a certain emotional response from the raw metal. She knows the metal skeleton is fully realized when she can recognize a balance between buoyancy and weight. Only then does she incorporate fragile papers, wire, enamel, and stitching. Wolfe is drawn to the tension between the raw metal and the delicate elements; fragile yet strong. Using enamel on copper and paper is significant to her work as it call upon her roots as a printmaker.

Ricardo Duque Pratt community member since 2014
Motion | $2600
13
ITEM
Ricardo Romero Cortez Duque makes paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed media artworks. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, he creates intense personal moments masterfully generated by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. His paintings don’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By applying abstraction, he investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. His works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. Ricardo currently lives and works in Seattle.

Gerber grew up in rural Pennsylvania tending to farm animals and riding horses, studied art and bronze casting at Bucknell University, then came west for her MFA at the U.W. Inspired, but not confined. her work pushes shapes beyond realistic – sometimes for a whimsical effect, sometimes purely for the rhythm of the lines and her sense of aesthetics. She feels that her most successful work could be stripped of its figurative elements and the underlying form would remain beautiful. Her work inspires narration, especially as a part of her public installations. Gerber engages the viewer’s imagination by presenting a moment in an incomplete story. Gerber suggests a theme and evokes a feeling, and the viewers find themselves providing details.

Linking Tourney | $3000
18
ITEM
This renowned Northwest sculptor began her artistic career making jewelry and taking classes at Pratt. Speidel often works at the intersection between figuration and abstraction, suggesting the human form through combinations of elegantly simple shapes. At times, her sculptures appear to diverge from the figure altogether, but they often preserve the basic components of bodies: circles and ovals evocative of heads, vertical forms echoing limbs. On the other hand, they seem inextricably linked to the natural world, their forms equally influenced by boulders and trees. It’s a dichotomy that, at its core, taps directly into the intimate connection ancient people felt with the earth. This piece is from her private collection, shown at Robert Lee Morris’ Artwear NYC. Linking Tourney is a silver plated adjustable belt, up to 35’’ long.

Encaustic, 36 x 36 x 2, 2015
Stephanie Hargrave Pratt community member since 2005
Rabbet | $3800
22
Live Auction
ITEM
Hargrave’s encaustic work combines biology and botany with imagery that feels familiar. Her paintings incorporate abstract organic forms and emphasize a direct correlation between subject matter and materials, as pure bee’s wax, resin, and pigments are heated, layered, and fused with a torch. By applying hundreds of thin layers, she can attain the transparency and luminosity that is possible with wax. She carves the pieces with pottery tools and dental instruments, exploring varying line weights in the process. Each painting grows naturally through the process of layering, eliminating, receding, assessing, and at some point, knowing when to walk away. “I find beeswax to be inherently lovely, and work with it always mindful of how its natural beauty and transparency can coexist with my ideas and imagery.”

Jean-Pierre Canlis ‘’Miniature Wheat’’ | $4500

ITEM
Simplicity and completion are the most important elements of Jean-Pierre Canlis’ work. Anyone can make something simple seem complex; it is taking the complex and translating it into the simplest form that inspires him. He wants the viewer to walk away settled, feeling the art has a sense of completion. Art has always been JP’s greatest passion. He attended Alfred University’s School of Art and Design program in New York, where he majored in Fine Art with an emphasis on glass. JP worked with Dale Chihuly before pursuing his own business, Canlis Glass, which pushes the boundaries of glass art as we know it. JP’s passion for glassmaking, combining his technical ability with very personal concepts and curiosity, evolve with each glass creation. From large-scale installations gracing hotel lobbies to individual works on collectors’ yachts, JP’s artwork is making an impact worldwide.

Live Auction
ITEM
For more than half a century Tony Angell has responded to and interpreted nature in the Northwest through sculpture, line and the written word. A graduate of the University of Washington, he is an elected member of the Department of Communication’s Hall of Fame. Angell’s artwork and books have won numerous regional and national awards. His public commissions may be found throughout the Northwest and along with his regular showing of work at the Foster/White Gallery, he participates in regional and national exhibitions each year. Some years ago, when Angell’s artist friend John Busby and his wife Joan were visiting from Scotland, they were standing opposite a peregrine falcon’s cliff-side nest. As they gathered ideas for drawings and sculpture, the female falcon, carrying prey, flew into a stand of madrones and cedars above us. She called across the bay that separated her from a nest containing a single hungry youngster, as yet unfed. Seeing the meal she bore, the nestling responded with begging calls from the narrow ledge. Despite its hunger, however, the young peregrine hesitated to fly out across the 300-foot expanse of water that separated it from the parent. Its intent in gathering resolve before flight inspired this drawing.

From their earliest collaborative efforts, Jenny Pohlman and Sabrina Knowles have explored the feminine fluidity, curvature, strength and plasticity inherent in glass. Their work begins with a concept, a philosophy or a desire to bring a visual quality to our experiences with each other and with people from around the globe. Pohlman and Knowles design and create glass forms, design and fabricate steel mounts and armatures and adorn work with world beads. Their inspiration comes from personal life experiences, travels and studies of both ancient and contemporary cultures with an emphasis on women. The intent is to create sculptural forms and assemblages that evoke the sensuous curves of the feminine, provide a narrative that embraces our common humanity, and engage our viewers in a moment of reflection.

Carol Milne Pratt community member since 1990
You Can Leave Your Hat On | $3500 ITEM
In 2017, over 100,000 people downloaded the pattern to make a knitted ‘’Pussyhat.’’ In addition to knitting hats for family and friends, artist Carol Milne rendered the design in glass using her knitted-glass technique. The goal of the Pussyhat movement is to create a platform for people to support women’s rights, and each other, around the world. The January 21 protest resulted in the largest single-day demonstration in U.S. history. This work is Carol’s tribute to that iconic event. Milne has been working in glass since 2000. Her work blurs the boundary between textiles and glass. It has become a metaphor for social structure. Individual strands are weak and brittle on their own, but deceptively strong when bound together. Just like our social fabric, the connections bring strength and integrity to the whole and keep it intact.

Wood has always been a part of Jed’s adult life, first as a framer and currently as a retiree with a wood shop and a lathe. Jed’s ideal vessel is a simple yet elegant form with a small opening and the thinnest walls possible, finished to best express the beauty of the wood. Not all attempts result in beautiful vessels. There are many disappointments as the wood cracks or splits, or otherwise fights the process. Yet the successes make the effort worthwhile, and the challenge is always there to create a more elegant piece. The wood in ‘Confluence’ was once part of a Chestnut tree that spent its life on the east side of Lake Union. The tree met its demise when condos were built there, and some of the wood made it to Jed’s shop to find new life as art. This particular vessel is special in that it expresses the merging of the burl with the straight grain of the tree. It is truly a burly piece of Seattle history!

Thank You Ar t is t s Pratt Fine Arts Center is truly blessed with a dynamic community of artists who support the organization’s mission in a myriad of ways, year after year. Ruby Riot features an especially impressive display of art contributed by a most incredible and generous group of artists. Artists, we stand in absolute awe of your creative contributions to the field and we are truly grateful for your gifts this year. We are forever grateful, thank you! Collectors, we encourage you to bid boldly this evening in support of our cause and in support of these artists who been so giving. But we also encourage you to extend your support of these artists by visiting their studios and galleries and continuing to invest in their work throughout the year.
