Auction 33RD ANNUAL FINEFine ARTArt AUCTION
Introduction
“Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” — NEIL ARMSTRONG
Welcome to the future, friends! As we join together in support of Pratt Fine Arts Center tonight, we reflect back on a time when we believed that anything was possible; we recall a mid-century moment in time when curiosity sparked creativity and imagination boosted innovation. A rocket-fueled race to space infused popular culture with a shared sense of wonder and somehow we knew that we could do things no one had ever done before. That same spirit is alive and well at Pratt every day. Discoveries are made and connections are formed as students—ages 8 to 80—explore new frontiers. Artists push themselves into the great unknown as their work travels to new dimensions. We may not be racing into space, but we are opening minds through art and traversing new territories each and every day. We are fostering the great explorers of our time. Tonight we raise our paddles high and bid boldly to ensure that this exploration remains accessible to thousands of students and artists in the coming year. Together we make a vital investment in art and artists that will pay off to infinity and beyond. It takes a full crew to pilot this ship and each member is critical to our launch and trajectory. And so we offer our immense gratitude to the staff, board, and committee volunteers for making this evening possible. You are truly out of this world! And to our intrepid passengers, thank you for joining us on this journey tonight! We are honored to see so many loyal supporters and new friends on board, moon boots and all. Together we will advance our mission to make art accessible to everyone. We love you to the moon and back! Cheers,
Sabrina Knowles Auction Chair

In Memoriam Nancy Delaney Alvord, 1922 – 2017 Nancy Delaney Alvord, whose creative mind, generous spirit, and joyous love of beauty motivated a lifetime of philanthropy, passed away on December 22, 2017. Together with her husband Buster, she led a life of wisdom, compassion, and generosity devoted to interests in education, arts, and public service. Nancy’s service in the local arts community was truly transformational. When she was elected President of the Seattle Repertory Theatre Board of Trustees, a change in the bylaws was required—the founders having not foreseen a woman occupying the leadership position. At the time she observed prophetically, “I’m glad this modern world came about and I can be myself and have my own name.” Nancy’s interest in advancing arts and culture also benefitted Seattle Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery, Meany Hall, KUOW, and countless others, including Pratt Fine Arts Center. Nancy’s spirit lives on through her family as well as the many organizations and individuals she inspired along the way.

Pratt Fine Arts Center
About Pratt Fine Arts Center Pratt Fine Arts Center began in 1976 as a tiny art facility with a big vision to build a community of artists and an educational center providing the tools and the training to support the creation of art. Today, Pratt makes art accessible to everyone, offering a place for spirited exchange, self-expression and personal transformation through creativity. A unique multidisciplinary visual arts resource, Pratt provides education and instruction, community programs and professionally equipped art making facilities.
Your artist is inside. Pratt Fine Arts Center is proud to serve as a lasting tribute to Edwin T. Pratt, a civil rights leader who devoted his life to improving the quality of life for all people. Mr. Pratt served as Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League from 1961 to 1969. His assassination in that year by unknown assailants was deeply felt by many Seattleites who depended on Pratt’s calm leadership during a period of social upheaval. For almost four decades, Pratt has been providing the Northwest community with the opportunity to experience art. Pratt’s classes teach more than 3,800 students and its studios serve more than 300 working artists each year. Its classes, lectures and programs reach more than 20,000 people annually. Affordable studio space with an unparalleled array of equipment provides artists of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to learn, to experiment and to create.

Screen Printed Lamé Soft Sculpture, 18 x 10 x 3, 2017
ITEM
Although traditionally Sarah Bryant has worked in two dimensional media, she loves working in glass because of the deceptive aspects of stiffness and stability. In this piece, Sarah is fascinated how a solid, fused pattern arrangement in a rectangle can be completely changed by reheating and rolling it into a closed container, then blown and twisted into a vessel.
Fire Sauce Soft Sculpture Trio | $180
1011
Originally created in August 2017 as part of Mary Anne Carter’s installation Women in the Style of Taco Bell, this collection of Fire Sauce soft sculptures features excerpts of poems that relate to femininity by Sommer Browning, Monica McClure, and Melissa Crawford. Equal parts playful and uncanny, the installation featured a kaleidoscopic display of costumes, performances, and visual art intended to glitter bomb the patriarchy with humor and flamboyance.

Traditionally, Sarah Bryant has worked in two dimensional media. Her recent shift to glass has allowed her to explore transforming ideas and images into three dimensions. For Vicki Platts-Brown, intaglio is a medium that exacts a price from the artist. Copper, acid, rosin, inks, and room temperature, like nature, are ever changing and challenging. Altering the smooth copper surface often produces surprises, and etching artist learn to incorporate and appreciate these gifts - not fight them. This print was created with two plates with some parts hand drawn and others direct impressions of plants she picked up during her walks.
For Vicki Platts-Brown, the components of Intaglio - copper, acid, rosin, inks, room temp-, like nature, are ever changing and challenging. The requirements and possibilities of copper are what continue to draw her in, and the genetics of nature is what she tries to convey. Two plates were used in this print. She hand rendered some of the objects and with others used dried plants which were pressed into the wax.

The first dimension of space is length, the second is width, the third is height, and the fourth one is duration. Duration can be a time-lapse of an event, so he creates a visual motion through the use of line and color.

Naoko Morisawa
Liberation - State of mind | $700 Handcrafted, oil-stained, wood and paper mosaic, 11.25 x 9.25, 2018 ITEM
Wood is an important component in Naoko’s art. The life of a tree and the energy in each grain of wood are why she uses wood. Her artwork is hand-made of thousands of very small slices of natural and oil-dyed (wood) chips on board. She likes to incorporate the patterns in the wood and enhance them with oil-stain. The variety of wood grain is very beautiful and the pattern is never the same. The combinations of natural and oil-stained grains create interesting shadows and impressions. She is currently developing a new body of work using other materials such as paper and cardboard in addition to wood-mosaic. Upcoming shows: Frederick Holmes Gallery 2018, and Edmond Public Art Installation 2018. Represented by Frederick Holmes Gallery, Seattle.

Buster Simpson
Pair Salmon Can Lid with Rib Cage | $1000 Aircraft grade aluminum, marine plywood, glass, paint, diffraction grating, refractive tapes, steel, monofilament, rubber and limestone counter weight., 8 x 1.2 x 30, 1986

Buster Simpson received his MFA in Sculpture from the University of Michigan in 1969. He has been selected for numerous public commissions over the past four decades. Conceived in 1978, these urban lures have evolved, based on consumers’ response. When properly hung, these wind vanes respond to the wind, oscillating as if swimming or spawning. During windy weather, the longer the line, the more the fish wind vane simulates an ocean-like swim; the shorter the line, the swifter the current and metal fatigue. The lures have often been deployed to bring attention to environmental issues. Simpson’s commissions include Anthropocene Beach, Seattle Seawall, Sound Transit Station, and collectively trying to repurpose the Battery Street Tunnel. bustersimpson.net

By blowing the glass into the bronze they become permanently joined, the glass responding to the See pg. 4–5 rigid form of the bronze. Jackson-Spieker explores the push and pull of opposing forces that cause an unstable existence but ultimately give way to a balanced unified duality. Combining different mediums creates a source of tension and conflict. By incorporating physical tension, positive and negative space, rigid and fluid lines, as well as organic and architectural forms he is able to explore these points of conflict and challenge the traditional characteristics of each medium. Raven Skyriver started blowing glass at the age of sixteen. Raven’s mentor, Lark Dalton, taught him how to build glass blowing equipment and trained him in the traditional Venetian technique. In 2003, Raven was invited to join the Williams Morris team. Raven shows his work nationally and internationally. For Raven, growing up in the Pacific Northwest on a small island translated into ample time on and around the water. Some of his most memorable moments in life are those of having his first salmon on the line, or a humpback whale feeding off the bow of his kayak. These unforgettable experiences dictate the work he makes today. He attempts to capture the essence of the animals that he depicts, and speak to the viewer’s own understanding of these creatures. He also hopes to draw into question the delicate balance of nature that is often taken for granted.

It is fascinating and devastating that our presence as one species has so much impact on the delicate balance of life. Through glass sculpture, Kelly’s work explores themes of Memento Mori, as well as extinction, preservation, and origin. The Ammonite, an intelligent coiled-up cephalopod, became extinct 65 Million years ago, leaving impressions in its habitat to fossilize. We learn from the past to be responsible for the future.
