Kids Today. Amirite? As one born to the last generation of analog youth, it’s difficult for me to imagine what it must be like to grow up in today’s Wi-Fi world. I had an Etch-a-Sketch, Slinkys and a big tree to climb for fun. There was an antenna on the TV and an extra-long cord on the kitchen telephone. Sure, I had floppy disks, Atari and the Oregon Trail, but I wasn’t connected to the bottomless abyss of digital stimulation that abounds for kids today. For the most part, meaningful engagement for me required two things: imagination and human interaction. That’s not to say that kids today don’t have those things, only that it must be easier to forego them when presented with an endless list of virtual alternatives. I see parents struggling to fight the digital tide every day, encouraging their children to put down the devices and engage with the world that is right in front of them. In my (very biased) opinion, there is no better way to do this than to give them access to the arts. So let’s give kids today something worth snapchatting and hashtagging about. Let’s give them art!

Cheers,

Steve Galatro, Executive Director PS – Pratt’s summer youth and teen programs are online now! ;) #MyPrattExperience #MakeArt

Everyone was a Teen Once A Conversation with Myra Kaha and Brandon Bowman Myra Kaha is the Youth and Teen Manager at Pratt, and Brandon Bowman teaches the metalworking courses for adults, youth and teens in blacksmithing and welding. MYRA: I’ve been at Pratt for six and a half

importantly it teaches them problem solving.

BRANDON: I’ve been at Pratt since 2002, so 16 years.

BRANDON: It’s important for teens to learn the basics and to gain skills, but there are also processes that they don’t even realize that they are learning that are important to know, like how to measure, using rudimentary math. If you are making a shield, you need to draw it, measure it, and figure out how to make it fit on your arm. That requires a lot of skills and planning. It’s like having a story problem in math that you actually want to solve. No one cares how fast a train gets to the station or how many apples Billy has in his basket, but if you want to make a shield, you care about what it takes to make it. The funny part is when they take the class, I subject them to some chemistry and physics. When I did my apprenticeship with Scott Szloch, who is a blacksmith and an instructor here, I was taking chemistry and physics. I would ask, “Why is there so much moisture building up in my shop?” And my chemistry teacher told me that it was methane, and when methane burns you get two water groups. So I could be suffocating in a steam room if I keep all the doors closed. It’s important to know these things. With teens, it’s learning in a direct application, which they usually like.

years.

MYRA: What do you like about Pratt? BRANDON: I like that it’s a place where people can dive in. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, and every student gets the breadth of where they can take their skills, and can start working on those skills right away. MYRA: I like Pratt because of the range of classes and studios where you can learn about different types of materials and processes. More importantly it gives teens the opportunity to explore and be creative.

Brandon, why do you think having teens at Pratt is important? BRANDON: Teens at Pratt is a novel concept, because in the regular world we don’t trust them to do anything. In my class, I tell them, “These tools are dangerous, you need to be careful.” I then show them how to use the same tools the adults use, and then trust them to use the tools properly and safely. I think that trust gives them enough capacity to explore where they want to go with their art, while doing it safely and taking it as far as they can. MYRA: I think having teens at Pratt is

important because it teaches them skills and how to use tools, but most

MYRA: So art classes give students an opportunity to learn applicable sciences in addition to making artistic decisions.

“They have been trapped in the box we call “school” all day, so when they get here and they can smash things and bend things and weld things, play with fire and have a burst of energy and they can run as fast and hard as they can. It helps them progress physically and emotionally.” –BRANDON BOWMAN Brandon Bowman (Photo by Myra Kaha)

BRANDON: Yes, it’s happening organically, so they may not realize they are learning it, but when they go to recall those skills, they are there. They will know what to do. MYRA: At that point, it’s no longer just theory; they know how to apply it. BRANDON: Yes. That’s how I learned and I try to pass those things on to the teens. I blame this all on Jennifer Stenhouse, a Pratt instructor. MYRA: Why are the arts important for teens? BRANDON: I think teens are already going through so much: hormone changes, going from middle school to high school, I think they all have things they want to express emotionally, and in the metalworking classes there is a lot of frustration and energy. They have been trapped in the box we call “school” all day, so when they get here and they can smash things and bend things and weld things, play with fire and have a burst of energy and they can run as fast and hard as they can. It helps them progress physically and emotionally. By the fifth class they have a fully-formed concept of what they have gone through,

whether in school or at Pratt. They learn how to express themselves well, and in a healthy manner. MYRA: I think art provides teens with an opportunity to put things together and to make something creative with fewer rules than most classroom settings or homework situations. We do have rules at Pratt: no weapons. But you don’t always have to do A, B and C to get to D here. You have options. You can do C, B and A. Or take B out of the equation. BRANDON: The order of operations is not as important as the final operation. MYRA: I don’t think that young people get enough opportunities to make things that are purely creative, or to pull from their imaginations to make things. That’s why arts are important for youth and teens. What surprises you about the teens in your classes? BRANDON: What consistently surprises me is how much information and responsibility you can dump on them! They are not only interested, they are thrilled to be trusted with this level of responsibility and this large factor of letting them do things and going for it. As long as you are willing to repeat

yourself enough to convey the details, they will take it as far as they can. They don’t know that can’t do something, so they don’t have that fear of not knowing what to do. MYRA: What surprises me is the amount of objects that they end up with, and their ability to just gobble up information. I have heard from many instructors that teens learn faster and are more eager for information than adults. They are used to being students and have less fear of being wrong. I am always surprised that at the beginning of a week-long class some students are shy, and by the end of the week they own the studio, they own Pratt, they bring their parents in and show them all the tools they got to use. It’s always really impressive when you think back to that first day when they were shy or uncomfortable to see how far they progress. It’s empowering. BRANDON: The thing that always throws me off is that in the beginning,

the students are afraid the assignments will always be the same. But by mid-week, I tell them they should have an idea, and they start going off in their own tangents. Instead of being a competitive environment, it becomes a collaborative environment. Students help each other when they can go in their own directions. By the last day, they work together to help each other finish. They pair up to help each other get their projects done. That level of collaboration is always surprising. MYRA: I think the community that is built here is very important too. I think that if every teen could find their community as a teen, we would be much happier adults. BRANDON: They get a sense of stability

here. MYRA: It’s very valuable to find like-minded individuals, and we cultivate that here at Pratt. There are lots of people with the similar goals of making art and exploring creativity.

Tuition Assistance 27

2018 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

pratt.org/tuitionassistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

The next Tuition Assistance deadlines are: Application period:

For classes that start between:

Apr 16 - Apr 26 Jun 4 - Jun 14

June 1 - July 17 July 18 - Aug 31

Applications may be dropped off at Pratt’s front desk, emailed to info@pratt.org or mailed to: 1902 South Main Street, Seattle, WA 98144 Attn: Tuition Assistance.
