A Message from Julie Dahlen Director of Library & Recreation Services This fall, ‘tis the season to be creative courtesy of Library and Recreation Services! Whether it be wreath making, painting, crafting or cooking, our Recreation Division has a class line-up sure to inspire your inner artist. Local journalist, Skye Ravy, is very much in tune with her inner artist, producing our elegant Activity Guide cover and teaching her popular acrylic painting classes at Centennial Park this fall.

Creative opportunities abound at the City Library as well, with a focus on multicultural arts and crafts projects ranging from Dias de los Muertos shrines to tabletop Christmas trees. This is also the season for curling up with a good book, and the Library offers plenty of those, too! We invite you to harvest all the beauty of the season, with a little help from your friends in Library and Recreation Services. Happy Holidays!

GRADUATE & REVIEW PROGRAMS

Kinder Swim Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely. Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Reusable swim diaper may be required. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace. Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination. Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards

JACQUE EGGER Jacque Egger is a self-taught artist who has expressed her creative side since early childhood through a variety of media. Her formative years were rich with influences from nature. Egger states, “My photographs are my inspiration and impetus for my art. Sometimes realistic and occasionally abstract. My inner joy comes from enhancing what I see, and the process of creating itself. I look forward to a long and exciting future of exploring my potential through my art.” Egger’s art has been showcased in three North West, and two Central Coast galleries as the featured artist.

Patti Everett is a native Californian and local artist who works in classic non-manipulated photography. She draws on her curiosity, wonder, and training in art and science (including marine biology and oceanography) to share the mystery and beauty of the natural world. Everett spent many childhood summers at the shore, playing in the ocean, but also observing, identifying and protecting sea life, which continues to be an important focus in her life. For fun, she paints in watercolor, plays the ukulele, and body boards.

Melinda T. Martin was born and raised in Los Angeles and has lived in Paso Robles since 1984. She first learned photography in high school but began a more serious effort in her late 30’s. She has never studied art, but has a natural talent for composition and enjoys trying new concepts in digital photography. Recent efforts include work in digital art, which allows her to combine her photographs with her imagination. Martin views her photographs as successful if the viewer can experience her feelings and those of the environment at the moment the image was captured. She states, “When viewing my digital artwork, I like when each viewer creates their own story based on the image. “ She is a member of the Paso Robles Art Association and credits her involvement with their Photography Guild in helping her expand her vision and improve her technical skill. She is also enthusiastically encouraged by her husband, who participates in her travels to capture new images and carries her equipment up the trails.

CATHERINE BURGARD Catherine Burgard is a seventhgeneration Californian. Her family has lived on the Central Coast since the 1840’s. An avid amateur photographer her entire life, she has recently started placing her photographs on wrapped canvases. The closeness she feels with nature will come through in her display of five canvases focusing on irises.

ADULT PROGRAMS LIBRARY Thursday, September 22 7:00-8:00 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St.

Thursday, October 6 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St.

What exactly is a drum circle? A Drum Circle is any group of people playing hand drums and other percussion instruments in a circle — bring your own instrument or use one of ours! Our leader for the evening will be Marian Kaser. Marian is a Music Therapist with degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy and an advanced degree in Creative Arts Therapy. She has worked as a Music Therapist and Piano Instructor for all ages, and has lead Drum Circles using the Arthur Hull model. Marian believes in active involvement when creating music and finds drumming to be “invaluable as a means to selfexpression; group connection; and emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being.”

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration in which family and friends gather to remember those who have died and to help support their spiritual journey by creating altars that include photos of loved ones, possessions that belonged to them, and some of their favorite foods, along with symbolic sugar skulls and marigolds. We will create our own miniature Day of the Dead shrines to honor our loved ones. Our shrines will feature a “sugar” skull drawing (or bring a picture of your loved one if you prefer), beads and sequins to represent flowers, and a heart (el Corazón) to symbolize your love for the deceased. You are welcome to bring any other small items meaningful to you (no bigger than 1” high) to include as you remember your loved ones.

Sign up for this free Drum Circle program at the Paso Robles Library Circulation Desk beginning Tuesday, September 6.

Many of our members joined to read books they might otherwise have never picked up. Our selections for fall are: Shelter by Jung Yun (September), Between the World and Me by TaNehisi Coates (October), and The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith. Please join us for a lively discussion beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Conference Room on the following dates: September 15, October 20, or November 17. We do not meet in December. Call Karen at 237-3870 for more information or to see what title we will be reading next. We love to have new members, and hope you will join us at our next meeting.

October Book: Between the World and Me

BY TA-NEHISI COATES October’s non-fiction work offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current racial crisis. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to

answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

particularly the relationship between Kyung Cho, whose debts and bad decisions are catching up with him, and his parents, Jin and Mae, who gave Kyung every possible advantage— private tutors and expensive hobbies—but never showed him kindness. When an act of violence leaves Jin and Mae unable to live on their own, the dynamic suddenly changes, and, for the first time in years, the Chos find themselves living under the same roof. Tensions quickly mount as Kyung’s proximity to his parents forces old feelings of guilt and anger to the surface, along with a terrible and persistent question: how can he ever be a good husband, father, and son when he never knew affection as a child? As Shelter veers swiftly toward its startling conclusion, Jung Yun leads us through dark and violent territory, where, unexpectedly, the Chos discover hope. Shelter is a masterfully crafted debut novel that asks what it means to provide for one’s family and, in answer, delivers a story as riveting as it is profound.

November Book: The Last Painting of Sara de Vos

BY DOMINIC SMITH In November, we will enjoy the profound pleasure of being swept into vivid new worlds, worlds peopled by characters so intriguing and real that we can’t shake them, even long after the reading’s done. In The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, Dominic Smith deftly bridges the historical and the contemporary, tracking a collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the golden age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, Continued on next page>

ADULT PROGRAMS LIBRARY and a celebrated art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth. In 1631, Sara de Vos is admitted as a master painter to the Guild of St. Luke’s in Holland, the first woman to be so recognized. Three hundred years later, only one work attributed to de Vos is known to remain—,“At the Edge of a Wood”—a haunting winter scene that hangs over the bed of a wealthy descendant of the original owner. Ellie Shipley, an Australian grad student struggling to stay afloat in New York, agrees to paint a forgery of the landscape, a decision that will haunt her when half a century later, she curates an exhibit of female Dutch painters and both versions threaten to arrive. As the three threads intersect, The Last Painting of Sara de Vos mesmerizes while it grapples with the demands of the artistic life, showing how the deceits of the past can forge the present.

CCCV: CENTRAL COAST COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

SCHOLARSHIPS Available through City of Paso Robles

Senior Volunteer Services has launched a brand new volunteer program as a companion to RSVP. The new program is CCCV: Central Coast Community Volunteers. Formerly, our RSVP of the Central Coast embraced all nonprofits or government agencies seeking our assistance in recruiting and placing senior volunteers. Because the federally funded RSVP program decided to focus more on core programs such as food, transportation, housing, and companionship, our Board felt it wise to establish the CCCV program as a companion to RSVP. This allows us to continue serving as many nonprofits as request our services, regardless of focus. The new program will also enable us to recruit a slightly younger age group (50+). We believe that with both of these programs we will be even more valuable to our partner agencies, able to attract more volunteers and meet the ever increasing needs of the community we serve. The new program must be selfsustaining as there is no federal funding available for it. We must rely on businesses, individuals and local government to act as sponsors. Please check out our new website www.seniorvolunteers.org to learn more about all of our programs and the many volunteer opportunities available to you. Thank you for helping us spread the word. Call us at 544-8740 to find your perfect volunteer match.

The City of Paso Robles, Department of Library and Recreation Services, has a Senior Scholarship Fund to provide monetary assistance for seniors who wish to participate in recreation programs but may not be able to afford the registration fees. The Department accepts contributions from local businesses, service clubs, individuals, and organizations to assist in providing senior scholarships. Scholarships may be used for City of Paso Robles, Department of Library and Recreation Services programs or activities only.

PROJECT LIFESAVER Project Lifesaver (providing a safety net for those with c o g n i t i v e disabilities) relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search and rescue team of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department. Applicants who are enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program wear the personalized wristband that emits a unique tracking signal. When a caregiver or parent calls 911 and states that the applicant is a member of the Project Lifesaver program and that the applicant is missing, a search and rescue team responds to the wandering individual’s last known area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. Find out more at
