Activity Guide June - August 2015
A Message from Julie Dahlen
Director of Library & Recreation Services It’s summertime and music is in the air . . . on Thursdays!
Y
es, the Paso Robles REC Foundation’s ever-popular Concerts in the Park series is moving to Thursdays. Still scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 and still located in our lovely downtown City Park, the concerts’ shift to Thursday
is a neighborly decision to accommodate merchants’ requests for more plentiful Friday evening parking near their establishments. As the key fundraising event of the REC Foundation, Concerts in the Park proceeds have supported many recreational enhancements in our community, most recently, assisting with the upcoming renovation of the City Park playground. We are confident that Concerts will continue to be a great success, even on
Thursdays! And, if our prediction misses the mark, we’ll reevaluate for next year. Sounds like a win-win to me! So, adjust your calendar, pack up the family and join us for another harmonious summer under the trees, courtesy of the City of Paso Robles and the Paso Robles REC Foundation. See you there!

Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely. Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Reusable swim diaper may be required. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace. Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination. Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards maintenance classes will be issued. Graduates may sign up for Fundays. $45 registration fee is payable to the instructor. Registration fee waived for siblings.
Infants, six to twelve months, learn to roll over from a face down position in the water onto their backs to relax, breathe. Babies will learn to roll and float fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Learning these skills takes approximately 12 to 20 lessons. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Parent participation may be required. Reusable swim diaper if appropriate. $45 registration fee is payable to the instructor. Registration fee waived for siblings.

For GIRLS and BOYS. Join us as we explore the fundamentals of electricity--and its counterpart: magnetism. You’ll be able to convert electricity into heat, motion, light and magnetic force. Go home each day with real scientific materials and teach your family and friends about the electromagnetic concepts you’ve learned. Class size is limited to only TWENTY children, so register a.s.a.p. This is the ESSENCE of hands-on science. Your teacher is Mr. Baker, life-long scientist and active science educator. Nutritious snacks provided. Befriend girls and boys who are from private schools, public schools, and homeschools. We will all work together to explore science, and gain positive memories we’ll have forever. Questions? Call Tim, 559-779-4821. $35 materials fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.
Girls and boys join us as we create and play with simple machines, energy and forces! Create a Rube Goldberg contraption you get to keep. Convert your energy into a mousetrap, and then see what kind of forces you can convert that into. Be able to lift something three times your mass. Use your energy to create sound-producing doohickeys. Go home every day with artifacts you get to keep—and teach your families the concepts you learned in camp. Healthy snacks will be provided. Best of all, new friends will be gained as you team up with girls and boys from different parts of your community— including youngsters who are homeschooled, or kids who attend either public or private schools. We all have fun exploring science together! So put on your “science hat,” along with clothes you don’t mind ruining, and join Mr. Baker, scientist and active, certified science-educator. Questions? “Think Paso,” the title of June’s exhibit, was created to honor and appreciate the natural landscape that we call home. Using photographs she has taken of her favorite places in town, local artist/graphic designer Alli Michele created digital paintings that depict beauty, abundance, and an appreciation that the best things in life are free. Alli Michele states, “We live in paradise, let’s indulge!” July Artist of the Month:

Body mechanics and selfacupressure techniques are taught
Try something new that is really old! Qigong (chi gung) is the parent of Tai Chi and much easier to learn. The slow gentle movements help re-set the nervous system, improve breathing and align the body for maximum efficiency. Along with the principles of Qigong, acupressure and body mechanics are used to release stress and enhance overall health and vitality. Simple exercises are practiced to synchronize breathing with movement and proper body alignment – so with practice, Qigong improves breathing, relaxation and posture and is especially pertinent to those with injuries and/or health conditions. The class is fun with functional methods which can be applied to your daily life – at work, home and any exercise program. Come visit to try it out. Questions? Pickleball is a racquet sport that has been heralded as “the fastest growing sport in the country.” It is like tennis—but different. Like racquet ball—but different. The ball is like a whiffle ball—but different. The court is like tennis—but smaller. We use a paddle—but this is not paddle tennis. The net is 2” shorter than a tennis net. Pickleball is fun, very social, and you get an excellent workout with less stress on the joints than the game of tennis. Equipment is available for you to use so you can try the sport—so drop in anytime. Activity Enrollment A minimum number of participants is required to hold programs. The Department of Library and Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel a program that does not meet this minimum and participants will receive a full refund or credit. It is highly recommended that you pre-register as early as possible to avoid programs being cancelled due to lack of enrollment.
Activity Refund & Cancellation For ongoing classes, participants may drop the class after they attend the first meeting and receive a partial refund, but they must file for a refund before the second class. No refunds will be issued after the second class. For Summer Swim Program or classes only meeting once, you must file for a refund at least five business days before the class starts. If the participant cancels, he/she must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office, and will be subject to a minimum $7 service charge. Refunds for cash registrations will be mailed from the City Finance Department approximately two weeks after the request is received. Refunds on checks will be issued after the check has cleared the bank, which is generally within 30 days of receipt. In order to avoid the $7 fee, a participant may choose to keep the money on account to be used for another class.

CONTAMINATION can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
